Can we use Time Capsule with Windows?

We set up a new Time Capsule today and both our Macs have Internet access through it, but not our Windows laptop. What do we need to do?

Make sure you have the airport utility for windows installed.. it is not much use with the latest AC model airports but does load bonjour for windows.
In the Mac, redo the setup of the TC.
Use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. ie TCgen5 good base station name.
TC24ghz and TC5ghz for wireless.. I strongly recommend you use different names for the two bands.. at least to troubleshoot.
Use no security for a test. If windows cannot connect to 2.4ghz change the channels and try 11, 6, 1 in that order.
Once you have it working add security.. WPA2 Personal with a 10-20 character pure alphanumeric password.

TC is not designed for ipad or iphone or any iOS device.
You should use them with cloud if you want remote access to your data do it via cloud.. you cannot easily get remote access to the TC from iOS device.

  • Can I use time capsule with a ASUS (RT-N16)router?

I will use a router with vpn. Can I use time capsule with it? And if yes, how do I connect them?

There is no vpn built into the native firmware of N16 so I presume you are going to use third party.
Just plug in the TC and bridge it.. ie go to Internet tab of airport utility and select connection sharing off.
wireless then you will need to figure out.. you can setup roaming on 2.4ghz by using identical wireless name = ssid and security but lock both to different channels.. pick out of 1, 6, 11
In a PC network make sure you use the TC with a new name.. no spaces no special characters.. same with wireless. TC also restrict wireless on 2.4ghz to only 20mhz.. if you have the N16 set to 40mhz you will have to be extra careful with channels.. 40mhz will use up two channels and only one remains.. so your household will have filled the 2.4ghz.
Someone suggested you can turn off 2.4ghz in the TC by not naming it.. When I try that it kicks up an error that it has to be named. So perhaps someone else has a suggestion of how to turn off 2.4ghz.
You can turn off 5ghz by unchecking it. Seems mighty strange that you cannot turn off 2.4ghz but you can turn off 5ghz.

Can I use time capsule with a USB cellular modem?

No, since the USB port on the Time Capsule will only support a compatible printer and/or hard drive.

  • Can you use Time Capsule with any wifi extender?

Can you use Time capsule with any wifi extenders?

No, since Apple designed their routers to only work with other Apple routers.
I suppose that it is possible that another brand might work, but since you won't know this until you try, it would be a good idea to have a clear understanding of the store's return policy before you decide to gamble.

  • Can I use Time Capsule with an iPad?

I have music and pictures saved on my iPad, don't use a regular computer.  Can I use Time Capsule to back up those pics and tunes?

    ...(I) don't use a regular computer...
Simple answer: no.  iPad backups are handled through iTunes on a Mac or PC.  The iPad doesn't have any inherent backup capabilities.
In the future, when Apple release iOS5, iCloud and iTunes Match, you may have some capability to backup your songs and pics.  But until that happens, you will need to figure out how to backup those things on your own.  (And even after iClouse and iTunes Match are available, you may still need to find backup procedures for things those services can't backup.

  • Use Time Capsule with Windows-based Computers and PowerLan Devices

    Hi All -
I would like to inquire whether I can:
    1) use a Windows-based conputer to access the internal hard disk of Time Capsule; and
    2) connect the Time Capsule with prower lan devices (e.g. Aztech) to extend the wirless coverage.
    Thank you.
    Gary

Yes.. but.. Long term storage of info is not really wise where you have no backup. TC is not able to back itself up and you will have issues finding anything but manually doing it from windows.
    What windows version?
Have you installed the airport utility? That makes life much easier, as it adds bonjour for windows and a disk access agent.
Simply installing the utility may be enough. If not open windows explorer and type the name or IP directly into the address bar.
Note.. you should use all names on the TC that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (where you obviously change to real name (no spaces of course) or IP)
If you still have issues.. check that you can ping the TC.. and make sure firewalls are not blocking it and your PC is located HOME, not WORK or PUBLIC.

  • Use Time Capsule with Windows

  • Can I use Time Capsule with XP SP1

I have my time capsule attached to my PC through ethernet. The PC has on SP1 I did not realize I needed SP2 in order to use the disk sent with the Time Capsule. Anyway, using bonjour that I downloaded off internet I am able to print to the the printer attached to the time capsule and I can also connect to the internet fine. The only problem is seeing the TC drive on my PC? Do I really need to download SP2 in order to get this up and running? Any other options?

Have you enabled File Sharing on the TC? You also need to set the Workgroup name to be the same as your Windows workgroup (XP default is Mshome). Both options are set using Airport Utility > Manual setup > Disks.
TC should now be visible in Explorer/my network places/windows network/workgroup.

  • Using Time Capsule with Windows 7. Won't work when modem connected directly to Time Capsule, must be connected through another router.

Apple Time Capsule working with Windows 7 PC will not work when modem is connected directly to the Time Capsule.  Only when a Cisco Linksystem is connnected inbetween the modem and the Time Capsule.

Sorry but it needs much more specific info than this..
What modem? Is it cable or adsl or some other?? Is it pure modem or broadband router included?
Cable has specific issues different to adsl.
If you used to use the Cisco/linksys router.. and have not reset the cable modem it will not work. Turn off the cable modem.. it must be powered down.. if battery backup drop out the battery. Remove the coax cable.. get it off. Power down everything else in the network.
Plug in the modem to the TC wan port.
Power up the modem.. wait 2min
Power up the TC.. wait 2min
    Power up the clients.
If it has worked you will now be able to open the airport utility on the windows computer and see the TC has a public ip on the WAN port. If not redo the whole thing but leave the modem off.. 15min.. 1 hour.. 1 day.. ring the cable company and ask them to reset. Usually a few minutes is enough.
If you have a modem with combined router.. then bridge the TC. Just google search it.
For other combos.. tell us specifics..

  • Using Time Capsule with Windows XP

Hi, I have just setup a TimeCapsule in my home, where I have Verizion FiOS with an Actiontec Wireless router.  I have set up ther Time Capsule in bridge mode.  Everything is working well.  I can connect to either the Verizon Router wireless network or the Time Capsule wireless network from my Windows laptop and from my Macbook Air and get to the Internet.
Problem: Airport Utility (Version 5.5.3) which I have installed in my Windows XP laptop cannot discover the Time Capsule. I get an error message: "Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport Wireless devices".  I would like to set up backup to Time Capsule from my Windows Laptop.
    What am I doing wrong?
Thank for any help you can provide.

    Plug in via ethernet..
If you still cannot find the TC.. press and hold the reset for 10sec until the front led flashes rapidly.
The TC then has to show up.. but if not, you need to isolate the TC from the rest of the network.. so on the laptop is plugged into a LAN port.. and laptop has no other connection. .Make sure the laptop is set to auto IP and gets 10.0.1.x ip address.
Then you should be able to access the TC.
Give it short SMB names.. both TC and wireless. no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
You should probably also set fixed channels..
For disk access turn on guest account to read and write.. and set workgroup correctly in file sharing area.

  • Can't Use Time Capsule With Lion

    Hi,
So I have one of the original Time Capsules, running firmware 7.3.2
I have never been able to successfully update the firmware.  No matter what version I try to update to
I always get the same problem:  "An Error Occured While Updating the Firmware"
This hasn't bothered me too much in the past because it has worked fine for both Time Machine and as my wireless router.
I upgraded to Lion yesterday, and the first thing I tried was to check my backups and create a new backup.
When I try back up with TIme Machine, I get "Time Machine can't back up because the firmware must be updated"
When I try to open Time Machine to view old backups, I get "The Operation Can't be Completed" (Finder Fault)
    Help!!!

You've got to figure out a way to upgrade the firmware, or access your data from Snow Leopard.
I don't know if the AppleStore can help; if not, try AppleCare.

  • Using Time Capsule with Windows Vista

I updated my TC, and it is working well with the internet as a router. However, I am having problems finding the TC as a hard drive on my computer. I did not have this problem before the update, and please no harassment about using Microsoft.
    Any help here?

Yep, this seems to be a common problem from what I have seen on the forums and from my own personal experience.. it works fine on my mac, but my girlfriend can no longer access the files from her windows PC. I had to downgrade back to 7.3.2.. Hopefully this is fixed soon.
