Can you partition the Time Capsule hard drive?

I would like to back up through AirportExtreme 2 different Macs with Time Machine
but obviously I would first need to partition the Time Capsule HD !
Is it possible and how would I go about this? I can't find no infos in the manual...
Thanks for your help.

First you do not have to partition the drive to backup multiple computers. Each computer creates a separate file for the backup.
Second there is no way (currently) to partition the drive without taking the TC apart, removing the hard drive, putting it in an external drive enclosure, and partitioning it.

  • How can I access the time capsule hard drive via ethernet?

I recently bought a new laptop, as my old one was sadly stolen. I'm trying to connect to my backed up time capsule hard drive via ethernet to retrieve my files, but it doesn't seem to work. Oddly enough I have no issues over wifi. When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network. I have a MacBook Air with an ethernet adapter if that makes any difference. I'm also running the latest OS X and firmware. Wifi is simply too slow for this restoration process, so any suggestions?
Could I possibly connect via USB? What kind of cable would that require? Is the ethernet issue a problem with my settings?
    Help greatly appreciated

In the Network panel of System Preferences do you have an Ethernet connection item on the left? If not, authenticate if necessary by clicking on the lock, then click the plus sign at the bottom of that column and add an Ethernet item.

How are you doing that switching? When you switch to Ethernet do you have connectivity to the Internet? If not, do you see a tiny green light on the Time Capsule next to the Ethernet socket you're using?

    No.

  • Can i upgrade the time capsule hard drive to 4 TB?

OK, so the Hard Drive that came with the Time Capsule is apparently failing.  I never really worked right, but now it is definitely close to its impending doom.  I have a 4th generation Time Capsule and wanted to know if it is possible to install a 4TB and what brand will work best without a lot of hoops to jump through.

Yes a 4TB will work.. You want a Green drive ie a low consumption one.. the speed of the drive is irrelevant as they are processor bound so any cheap green from any company should work.
Do a google search if you want a specific one. I have not used a 4TB but I have used lots of different 3TB and all work fine.. some may have spin down issues and it is hard to predict. ie one firmware revision might work and another not on the same brand.
Since Apple are not yet using 4TB drives.. there is no preferred one.
Some people are installing 4TB in their new Gen5.

  • Can i partition the time capsule so i can use it as a server as well?

can i partition the time capsule so i can use it as a server as well?

In order to partition the Time Capsule, you would have to open up the Time Capsule case, pull the hard drive, install it in a separate enclosure, connect the enclosure directly to your Mac, and then use Disk Utility for the partitioning operation.
Then, you have to reverse the entire process to install the drive back in the Time Capsule.
In addition to being a lot of work, something like this will void the warranty on the Time Capsule.
Niel's suggestion of creaing a disk image on the Time Capsule drive to reserve a given amount of space would be by far the easiest way to accomplish things.

  • I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason.  At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups.  At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose.

  • Can you use the Time Capsule as a wireless drive to share music on multiple computers

Does anyone know whether you can use the time capsule almost as a nextwork drive of sorts (i.e. to share Music etc amongst a few computers)?

The TC is a dumb hard drive inside an apple extreme router.. with a couple of knobs on.
It has no media servers.. and very little flexibility.. indeed it serves files.. AFP or SMB.. and that my friend is that.
So if you want a media server in the network..then a mini is a better proposition. At some point, with sales of ssd laptops soaring and space on these devices at a premium, Apple is long overdue on a revamp of the TC.. it is really either time to drop it or to create something a lot more powerful.. the mini might be a cheap computer but it is not really a file server.. having so little internal disk space and lacking external connectors unless you are rich enough to buy thunderbolt.

  • Can you access the Time Capsule just like a normal HD?

I'm wondering if the Time Capsule can only be used for backup or can you partition it and use it like regular external hard drive?

I don't use TM on my TC. I use TC as my net server. I use the Finder to drag and drop files to the TC. I also use TC to share files long distance with my children who are away.
I since removed the 500 gig hd and placed a 250 gig in the TC.
I've swapped a one terabyte hard drive into the TC also which was very quick and simple.
You are not going to partition a TC hard drive unless you pull it and partition the hard drive say in a firewire or usb enclosure or internal in a MacPro.

  • Can not connect to Time Capsule hard drive when I am not on its network.

If you can help me, I will be forever grateful!
I had a airport extreme with a hard drive that I used to back up my computer and to access my files when I am on the road. (Everything worked perfectly)
I switched to the Time Capsule.
I am now unable to connect to my Time Capsule drive when I am on the road.
I get this message: The server "time capsule name"may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
    Some notes:
-I am using the same exact modem at home I have been using this whole time
-I am connecting using the same connection I did when I connected with my airport extreme
    -I can connect to mobileme
-My mobileme name and password are in the advanced options in the Capsule
    -My firewall is OFF
-My back to my Mac option is ON in Mobileme preferences
-I have the most up to date OS package
-I have the most up to date capsule version
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hey,
I have excaly the same problem.
In my case, i can connect remotely to my mac mini at home, but not the time capsule.
    Anybody have any suggestions ?

  • Can you partition a Time Capsule?

My situation is, I would like to use 1 Harddrive for both a back-up and general files.
I work as a freelancer and when I'm finished with a project I just throw it on a HDD just incase I ever have to go back to it. I don't want to spend too much on a new Harddrive so I thought maybe I could use a large Time Capsule to firstly back my computer up and then perhaps on the partition put my work files on?
    Another question:
Are the transfer speeds solely based on your interenet connection? This could mean you get thunderbolt speed transfers if you have good interenet right?
    Thanks,
    Tim.

    1. The Time Capsule can't be partitioned, but disk images can be stored on it. You should get a regular external drive anyway; the Time Capsule's internal drive will eventually fail.
    2. Data transfer between your computers and the Time Capsule is local traffic and independent of the speed of the Internet connection.

  • Accessing the time capsule hard drive in bridge mode

I've heard that the Time Capsule doesn't "play well with others" but is there any way to map the drive or otherwise access it in a shared wireless network when I"m using the TC in a shared wireless network?  I have the two drives connected via the Ethernet so that shouldn't be a problem and the bridge protocol seems to be working just fine.  The other wireless router is a NetGear 600 with an egocentric problem (i.e. it thinks that it is the center of the universe).

I am a little unclear on your shared wireless network.
    Is it roaming network?
Or is the TC in "Join a wireless network" mode?
    Please spell it out.
You are working on hearsay.. do you actually have a problem?
You can map any network drive in windows.. the issue is more does it stay there.
Do you have the airport utility for windows installed?? That is well worthwhile. Not necessary but helpful.
eg I have recently upgraded my wife's desktop and laptop.. she is a Mac hater so windows for her. Win8 on the desktop .. I loaded the airport utility into it and it works very well with the TC.
The laptop is 8.1 and only just purchased. I wanted to see how well it works without airport utility.. and yes it works fine.. manually type into explorer the URL to the TC.
\\TCname (of course using SMB compatible names.. NOT APPLE NAMES.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
That also works fine. The PC with airport utility is just a bit easier.

  • I can't see my time capsule hard drive anymore

I have a macbook pro connected to time capsule (1tb) and a printer. I can access the internet and can print but my machine has stopped backing up and cannot find the time capsule hardrive anymore. I have tried resetting everything (several times) to no avail. Help!

Open a Finder window and look for your TC in the sidebar, then click on it. It will then display one of the following messages: "Connected as <your user name>" or "Connection failed." If it's the latter, click on the "Connect..." button and enter the TC password. Make sure the checkbox for "Remember this password" is selected before you hit OK.
Once this is done, your backups should work. Your TC should be connected whether or not it's mounted on the Desktop, even after you logout/login or restart or even wake up from sleep.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I backup manually my macbook pro hard drive to the time capsule hard drive?

I am new with Mac and I am trying to move some files from my hard drive to the time capsule manually. I know it does automatically, but there some files I want to keep permanently.

When the drive is available in the Finder, drag the files to it.

  • Can no longer backup Time Capsule hard drive

I just upgraded to Lion and wanted to backup the Time Capsule disk.  I went into Airport Utility, but the option under disks is no longer there.  I backup my Time Capsule to ensure I have a backup of the data on the Time Capsule incase of loss.
    What do I do?

It is available in the 5.6 utility for lion.

Install and use that instead of Apple's toy one.

  • Can you use the same external hard drive for Time Machine backups and as an additional storage drive?

I have an external HD that I've been using exclusively for Time Machine backups. I need to clear space on my hard drive, so I was thinking to move music & photos to an external drive.  Wondering if I can use the same one I have (which I'll aslo keep using for Time Machine) or if I need to get another drive.

    Hi Jossydtaylor,
Time Machine can use either an entire external disk or a partition of that disk:
OS X Mountain Lion: Disks you can use with Time Machine
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11171
You can use Time Machine with a Time Capsule, and with USB, FireWire, and Thunderbolt disks. The backup disk can be directly connected to your computer or be on a network. If the backup disk has been divided into partitions, you can use one of the partitions.
If the disk is partitioned using the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition type, some partitions may not be available for use with Time Machine. The GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition type is recommended.
For more info on partitioning, see this article:

  • Can the time capsule hard drive be changed?

Can the hard drive in a time capsule be swapped out for a larger one?

    SimonTemplar wrote:
What size and type hard drive does the TC use?  A,lso, does it need any special setup prior to installation in the TC?
The TC uses a standard 3.5" SATA drive..
It is usually a green drive.. WD often being used.. standard WD green drive.. but they use SAMSUNG and have used Hitachi, although I haven't seen them lately. Mostly it is WD.
    See the pics.. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
Size is depending on what you buy.. now they are 2TB for reasonable price and 3TB for absolute rip off price.. there is no improvement to the 3TB model. So don't buy it.. unless you have excess money.
The use of solid state drive .. SSD in the TC would be pointless.. it is slow.. even a 7200rpm drive gains very little.. read the review where they tested a ssd in the TC.
It is designed for back of laptops where wireless speeds are the rate determining step.. a slow green drive is more than fast enough and produces less heat, although this is marginal.
When you upgrade the drive.. you can either just put it in the TC, then erase the drive from the airport utility. It will be formatted HFS+ with one large space and a few small partitions for local use. So no drive preparation is necessary.
But you can plug the HDD into the computer using a usb to sata cable.. or whatever other access you have, and partition the drive beforehand.. this is the only way to partition a TC.
Use HFS+ with GUID type drive. The partitioned drive will work fine in the TC.. the small extra partitions needed by the TC will be added when you first boot it.
