Can you play an iPhone through iTunes?

I can see all my music on my iPhone when I plug it into my Mac at work - running iTunes - but I cannot play any of the music it as it's grayed out?
Is there something I need to do to be able to play it - can I do that? -use iTunes to play my iPhone through my Mac on my desk at work?
Both iTunes accounts are authorized to buy and play music with my one apple account name.
Thanks for any input.

Go to the summary tab of your iPod in iTunes. There should be an option to Manually Manage Music and Video, or something to that effect. Make sure that's checked. That may do it.

I can not restore my iphone through iTunes , it gives you can not restore error accured 3194

This often happens with Jailbroken phones.  If that's the case, we can't support you in these forums as it is against the terms of use.  This is Apple's information on error 3194:
This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194." If you receive this alert, update to the latest version of iTunes. Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Also, using an older or modified .ipsw file can cause this issue. Try moving the current .ipsw file, or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

  • App to automatically play song currently playing on iPhone through iTunes?

Hey, is there an app out there that would allow me to walk into my house playing a song on my iPhone through the earbuds, and have that song stop on the iphone and continue to play from that spot through iTunes? I often come home listening to a song, and want some way to continue that song through my home speakers without having to open iTunes, start the song, and drag the playhead to the same spot I'm at...I think this is a viable app idea if it doesn't already exist. It should be part of the iPhone software. "Automatic Proximity Sensing Music Zone Switching"
    Thanks,
    Sam

i have no heard or seen anything like this. what you can do is use the 'remote' app to start playing a song in iTunes, and it should be simple to set this up.
if anything, this would probably be easiest to add to the 'remote' app, if they haven't already thought about it.

  • IPod says "No Content" in music, and suddenly I can only play that content through iTunes on my computer...

    Can anyone help me?
I have been having terrible problems with my i-Pod Touch. I have very slow internet (often only 2 or 3 kb per second) but Apple seems to demand I do countless time-consuming updates. For this reason I haven't been able to update my iPod to iOS5........I have also had the whole run of errors when I connect my iPod to iTunes to update anything. I have had Error 13109, 5826, 1604 and 3194....but all of that hasn't bothered me too much as I manage to transfer music from CDs or computer files (podcasts from non-iTunes sources) and that's all I need.
All of a sudden yesterday, whilst continually giving me the error 13109 message, my iPod said I have no content in the music library. However, when I plug in the iPod to my computer and switch on iTunes I can see those songs are still there, and indeed I can play them. Until this morning I was able to play that content from my iPod through my loudspeakers that have an iPod dock - completely unconnected to my computer.
It just means that I can't play those songs when I am anywhere except connected to my computer - and that's not really the point of having an iPod is it?
Is anyone able to help me?
By the way, I should like to say that I am very new to i-Pods, and I already think it is absurd that a customer should be constantly obliged to update everything, and when things go wrong visit all manner of websites (and Apple Support Communities!) to hunt for solutions, and then spend hours and hours going into the belly of my computer, making changes, downloaded, syncing, re-booting and goodness knows what else to just try to get the product to do what the manufacturer said it would do when I bought it, without telling me anything about all this other hassle. I think it is shocking, or have I just been sold the only lemon in the orchard? I bought it in Mozambique and live in Zimbabwe - and none of these places offer support services.
tks for nay advice or commiseration you may be able to offer.........
    Nick (aged 50, and ignorant).

OK guys...no need to reply....I am resigned to never getting to the bottom of the syncing problem....I just go from 13109 to other error codes, downloading little umbrellas, putting th eipod in DWI mode (or something like that), restoring, getting anew error code, not being able to download updates etc. etc. - so I lost my patience with sitting in front of my computer trying to fix something I paid nearly usd 800 for (in my opinion the manufacturer should make it properly in the first place, or warn you about its faults before you buy)............
I synced my iPod to the computer, lost all my content ans restored only witrh what I had on this computer's iTunes - thus losing the countless CDs and vinyl I had converted to digital on my other ocmputer at home in Mozambique, which my current iTunes says it can't locate.
Am I really the only person who prefers to listen to music instead of spending hours and hours on the computer trying to fix this useless machne?
I wish I had never wasted my money on this thing. I guess it's just inappropriate and too sophisticated for where I live and for my simple needs (wi-fi and music only).
Very big thumbs down from this novice for the iPod Touch and for the iTunes way of doing things in general.......

  • Can you recover purchased music through Itunes?

I had a skipping issue with my Ipod and finally re-sync-ed it with Itunes but lost about $150 worth of music (that was already on there, all purchased through Itunes but on my dead computer, hence not recoverable)is there any way to recover the music I've lost? Does Itunes store my purchase history? I know how to access the current stuff it's the previously purchased stuff I want. My MIL says I can but did explain how, does anyone know?
      Windows XP

If you had no back up I'm afraid the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • Suddenly can't play video content through iTunes

My Dell laptop is running Windows 7. I've had this laptop for 3+ years and I've always been able to play movies and TV shows on it through iTunes. Today I redeemed a code for the Iron Man 3 digital download and the movie wouldn't play. In fact, no video will play, but music will.
I updated iTunes to 11.1, but it didn't solve the issue. I've read some of the articles about issues with playing HD movies on Windows 7 computers, but 1) I've always been able to watch HD content through iTunes on this laptop, and 2) some of the TV episodes I have are only SD...they won't play now, either.
    Thoughts?

After upgrading to iTunes 11.1 on Windows 7 x64, none of the HD movies I've purchased will play. I've never had any issues with these movies prior to upgrading to iTunes 11.1.

  • I purchased an iphone 4 from a friend, i called the carrier and they have unlocked it for me but the phone still needs to be activated as i have restored it. Can i activate the iphone through itunes by using a different carriers sim card?

    Help Please,
I purchased an iphone 4 from a friend, i somehow cleared it and it's now at the original activation screen, i have spoken to the carrier and they have unlocked it for me. Once the carrier unlock details get sent to apple, will i be able to use any carrier sim card to activate the iphone? currently when i connect to itunes it says the sim is not the original one and i need to insert the original sim... will this happen now that it has been carrier unlocked? i have been told the unlocking can take between 5 and 72 hours, do i just keep trying with itunes or do i have to do something different?
This is a christmas present for my son and i am running out of time, i'm not in an area that i can just go into an apple store and ask, i'm currently overseas in a very poor country and there are not many iphones that i have seen here so your help would really be appreciated.
i think the operating system is 6.0.1
    Thanks,
    Matt.

And have you waited that long? If not, then that's why it's not done yet.

  • Help! Can't access my iPhone through iTunes any more!

My laptop which was synced to my iPhone crashed the other week and I had to reinstall Windows etc. When I downloaded iTunes, however, it wouldn't let me access the music on my iPhone - could see it on the left hand side but the music , videos etc were greyed out...
Tried reinstalling iTunes, deauthorising computer etc but no joy.
Anyone got any clues as to what I can do - can't add any more music to my iPhone as it stands.

    That is correct.
Iphone will sync/manage/access music from ONE computer at a time. You cannot access/manage,etc the music from another computer. If you sync/manage from a different computer, then the iphones content will first be erased, then replace with the itunes content from the new computer.
The iphone is NOT a backup device - the music sync is ONE-WAY.
You can transfer itunes purchases, without syncing:

  • Can you link two iPhones, one on pay monthly the other on pay as you go, to the same iTunes account? As once sync'd the pay as you go looses its service provider??

Can you link two iphones to iTunes account, one is pay as you go the other is pay monthly on different service providers, the pay as you go when sync'd can't find it's service provider ??

The iTunes account has nothing to do with the cellular service provider. So you should be able to have both phones on the same account. What problem do you have with it?

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Ahhh, the mysteries of software updating...glad it is working for you now.  Sometimes you just have to be persistent until iTunes figures out you aren't going to go away.
So, are you now updating the iPhone to iOS 5.0.1?
If you already have 5.0 and a wireless connection you don't need to use iTunes to update to 5.0.1...the wireless update only means a file of about 38 MB, while via iTunes it is the entire iOS and about 730 MB...big time difference.
Hope all goes well for you.

Go into your iTunes preferences and select devices (on a Mac it's iTunes > Preferences > Devices; on PC it's Edit > Preferences > Devices). This will show you any and all iTunes backups you have, including your phone. If you don't see any backups, then you don't have one in iTunes.
With iCloud, if you've got a backup you can view it using an iOS device that's logged in with your iCloud (apple ID) account. You go into Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage and see if your phone is listed there. If it is, then you have a backup for it. You can click on it to see how large the backup is and what is backed up.
Don't be afraid to restore it. The worst that can happen is that you lose data. If you have a backup, then you can get that data back. If not, then you will have to start over, but your phone will still work.
