Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

The procedures below are for "moving" your library but as long as you don't delete it from your internal drive you are basically backing up.

Simple answer: Copy your whole iTunes folder to the external drive. For subsequent backups you might want to learn about cloning and using a tool that only does incremental backups of recently changed items rather than copying all your files each time.

I recently moved my songs over for hard drive space. Really don't want to have to go back through each album, etc... to get that to work.
Last time I tried making a "library" that didn't work either.
On the topic of deleting multiple songs that are the same, is there an easier way then to select each one?

Welcome to the world of digital media. Your can't really transfer it. I don't know what the rules are about transferring to your spouse but I do know that in some cases when you die, your heirs cannot inherit your digital media. This is why there is still an advantage to buying the CD since the usage rights belong to whomever holds the physical media.
A possible workaround is to burn the songs to a music CD with yout account (tracks only without song titles) and then having your wife upload it as a regular music CD onto her account. It's been a while since i've done this so I'm not sure if it would work now.
Please note that I'm not advocating copyright and/or TOS violations. I'm only suggesting ways to copy music for your own personal use which has traditonally been permitted. I only did this because I wanted to convert iTunes songs to mp3 files so I could burn them onto a data CD for use in my car. It would make sense that since married couples are a joint entity, this would be personal use.
Also, I'm not a lawyer so don't take this as legal advice.

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
Click Time Machine
Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

To Operate iTunes from the External Drive...
On Windows, hold Shift, launch iTunes and select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external drive.
And also make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction before Deleting anything off your Internal Hard Drive

Is it possible to save an iTunes media library on an external hard drive that is connected to a wi-fi router?

The external hard drive is connected, through USB, to a wi-fi router. So, can I save my entire iTunes library on that external hard drive and access the files wirelessly and also use that library to sync my iPhone 4S? I have a limited hard disk space on my MacBook Air and don't want any itunes media on my computer, so would it be possible to have it all on the external hard drive while maintainig the ability to sync/play those files saved on the external hard drive without the original files being on the MacBook Air? Hi all....I have spent weeks tidying up my music collection. I moved it all to Itunes media folder. Since I don't like how Itunes manages this folder I manually organised it myself so that albums where together etc. I am wondering if there is a fool proof way to move my media folder to an external hard drive without letting itunes manage and consolidate files as this will reverse all the work I did in organising. Im not sure if Im posting to the right place but fingers crossed:)

Album artwork, Automatically add to iTunes, iTunes media, Mobile apllications, podcasts, previous itunes libraries, voice memos. Then it has files itunes preferences, itunes libary extras, itunes libarry genius, itunes libraary, itunes music library......Is there stuff in there that doesnt need to be there as some are repeated in itunes media folder which contains....automatically add to itunes, books, downloads, home videos, mobile applications, music, podcasts, tones, voice memos and itunes preferences. Any thoughts on deleting some folders??? Thankyou so much for your time on this

I was wondering just in case something happens to my MacBook Pro can I save a copy of all the CS4 applications to an external hard drive to re install off as I do not have access to the discs to re install again.

THANKS! I guess my research wasn't THAT thorough. I booted with the external drive attached and setup immediately gave me the option to setup using Migration Assistant. It was a little slow via USB (2+ hours) but it was nothing compared to the time it would have taken to do it manually. My new 15" MBP looks exactly like my old 13" MBP. AWESOME!!!

Installed new version of itunes and now my toshiba external hard drive won't mount

All of my music and photos reside on this Toshiba hard drive. I successfully had itunes find the hard drive for the library. After I installed updated itunes to mac, the toshiba doesn't mount to any of my computers. (I've tried it on more than one) The light on the drive comes on, but I never see it on my desktop. Thank you for your help.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on anoterh computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Moving iMovie '09 events and projects onto an external hard drive

I have moved my events and projects from my laptop to my external manually by going into the library and dragging them over (not being aware that it's possible to move them within iMovie 09). They appear in the event list, on the external, and behave just like the originals on my laptop. Are they complete files, even though they weren't moved in the approved method?
I tried moving one additional file (not folder) from within iMovie, but it won't let me click and drag it to the external - it only highlights it, along with any other folder that gets in the way. Why is this happening?

The event files you moved are fine. But by moving them outside of iMovie, you'll have broken any links to them from the Project files (which are just lists of references and instructions). You can recreate the projects using the new event files if you want.
iMovie will only move to drives formatted as MacOS. Many drives come formatted as FAT32 by default (because it's a format readable on both Macs and Windows PCs. You can reformat the drive using Disk Utility (use the Mac Os Extended (Journaled) option, but that will erase any data on the drive. However, it will let you move files within iMovie, which is the safe way to do it.
One major reason why iMovie won't let you use FAT32 is that FAT32 has a file size limitation (2GB, I think) - and video files are routinely way bigger than that. And just to preempt another possible question, you can't use NTFS format because Macs can't write to NTFS drives

I am getting a new computer and need to be sure to back things up from the old computer in order to put everything onto the new computer. I know that itunes music I have uploaded from cd's will not sync from ipad to new computer, but what else should I be aware I will lose when I move to sync with the new computer?

IMHO the best solution is to clone your disk. That will give you a copy of everything. You can do that with either SuperDuper or CCC.
