Can you share iCloud drive storage with family members?

Seems like this would be a common question but Apple Support search came up empty. So, can you share iCloud drive storage with family members?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can share they space if they all use the same Apple ID, but that's not really a good idea, because you'll then share contacts, calendars, photos etc etc.

  • Can I share icloud drive storage between family members?

I am looking for easy offsite storage that can be easily accessed.  I have been reading a bit about the icloud drive, and it seems simple to add and open files. Can I share the storage with my husband and his computer or not?  We currently use carbonite as a backup program. Would icloud drive replace that?
    Thank you.
    Katie

iCloud Drive is tied one AppleID.  If you want to share it, all family members would have to use the same Apple ID.
The only Family Sharing Apple Supports for family members with different AppleIDs is sharing your purchases: iTunes items, iBooks, AppStore Purchases,  see:   http://www.apple.com/icloud/family-sharing/
But iCloud Drive cannot be shared between different AppleIDs, and it is also not meant to be a cloud backup. It is used to store your current working copies of your most important documents, that you need on all devices, and keep the documents updated on all devices.

can I share my contacts list with family members in the same way as sharing tunes and photos? If so how do I go about setting this up?

Perhaps you should read these Apple documents about what is stored by iCloud.  The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: iCloud storage and backup overview:
Your iCloud account includes 5 GB of free storage for iCloud Mail, Documents in the Cloud, and your iOS device backups. Your purchased music, apps, books, and TV shows, as well as your photo stream, don’t count against the 5 GB of free storage ........
    Here’s what iCloud backs up:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and booksPurchased music isn’t backed up in all countries. Purchased movies and TV shows are backed up only in the U.S. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore. Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. A movie’s product details page in the iTunes Store shows if the movie is unavailable.

  • HT4539 Can you share books through IBooks with family on different IPads?

I bought a book on my IPad and my daughter wants to read it on her IPad 2. Is there a way to share the book?

All content is tied to your account id, but if she has access to your account then she can have the book on her iPad - if she syncs via a different computer and has her own iTunes account then you could copy the book onto a flash drive from your computer and copy it onto her's, authorise your iTunes account on her computer, and then do File > Add To Library to add it to her iTunes library

No.  It can only be used in your own account, and cannot be used to buy gift cards.

  • Can't share iCloud drive with family?

What I saw as the most useful aspect of iCloud drive was to use it like dropbox as a network drive amongst all of our computers and devices. Otherwise, no matter how much syncing is going on, we're are always emailing files back and forth and finding a file is a nightmare. Is it on my laptop or my iMac? Her laptop or iMac?
Isn't that the primary feature of dropbox? Sharing files amongst many computers?
I am beta testing yosemite and tried it out and found there is no sharing, even though family sharing is on.
If you could use a separate account for iCloud drive from the one you use with photos, iTunes, keychain syncing etc, then it could work.
My question is, iCloud drive is REPLACING iCloud, right? So syncing requires our separate Apple IDs, and sharing would require the same ID, so this is an impossible task (to share iCloud drive and still sync our own stuff), right?
I'm thinking I will have to stick with dropbox unfortunately.
    Thoughts?

My thoughts are, that Yosemite hasn't been launched yet and that's why we should wait a little bit until iCloud Drive is officially available for both iOS + OS X. Until then, nothing detains us from using Dropbox parallel.

  • HT204150 can you share icloud contacts between 2 icloud accounts?

Can you share your address book/contacts between 2 icloud accounts? My wife and i have seperate icloud accounts but want to be able to update and access all the same contacts. How can we do it?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
The way to achieve that would be for one of you to login to the older ones account in settings> mail, contacts, calendars on their device. They could then enable contact synchronisation in that secondary account and disable contact synchronisation in their own primary account at settings> iCloud.

  • HT4847 can you share icloud storage space with a family member?

I used to have MobileMe family, and my wife and I are now both receiving alerts that we are running out of icloud space. Can you buy a shared icloud plan?
    Thanks

If you are both using the same Apple ID, then you can share the iCloud storage that you have. However sharing an Apple ID for iCloud is not really recommended, it results in confusion over contacts, calendar, notes etc etc.

  • Can you share iCalander/Address Book with other users and restrict them from seeing certain entries?

I'm doing some research for my boss concerning iCloud. He would like to setup a way to syncronize iCalender and the Address Book between three users but keep his personal information private. For example, he wants to be able to update his calender from his phone about an upcoming meeting/project so that the three computers at work are all updated and see upcoming events. Same goes for the contacts. If he adds a new contact or if I add a new contact, for a client or whoever it may be, he wants it to sync up for everyone. At the same time, if he adds a personal event to iCal such as, "Dinner with the girlfriend" or something irrelevant to work, he doesn't employees to be able to see that. My first idea was to setup an iCloud account but I'm wondering if you can even restrict certain things within an account.
Anyone have any other ideas? They would be greatly appreciated.

iCloud appears to provide no Address Book sharing. You might be able to do this through Google, but it would be likely to be all contacts or none.
iCloud allows you to share calendars privately (editable if you wish) to other iCloud users or publicly (non-editable) to anyone - they would need a CalDAV client to read it, such as iCal or Google Calendars.
You share individual calendars, so private events should be in their own calendar which is not shared.

  • How can you share only specific folders with windows

I took the following steps to share my macbookpro files with my desktop windows XP sp3. I am using a router to connect these two computers.
1)system preferences > sharing > file sharing > options > CHECK BOX "share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" >check box 'on' my one of the 2 accounts on macbookpro> hit ''Done'' > GREEN red dot next to "Windows Sharing: on"
    2) I then added 3 FOLDERS to the "shared folders:" list on 'system preferences > sharing > file sharing'
    3) system preferences > network > Location >"automatic" in the drop down menu > hit edit location and create a new location with the default name "Automatic Copy" Go to Advanced> WINS > change work group to "MSHOME" (this is the name of work group on my desktop windows pc)
    4) system preferences > accounts > other accounts> guest accounts: check the blue box " Allow guests to connect to shared folders"
    5) go to my network places on xp. > click add a network place>Next>choose another network location>Next>Browse>entire network>Microsoft windows nework>Mshome>Macbookpro>clicked on the folder ”my account from my step #1 "
Now ALL files on this account on my macbook are shared with my desktop.
THIS IS INTERESTING AS IN STEP 1, I Had given permission to share ONLY 3 FOLDERS and I do not want to share every single macbook folder from my account with this desktop.
Please help. I have been unable to fix it. I am very new to mac world.

You'll have to open another iCloud account - you can't share access to just part of the email account.
Go to http://appleid.apple.com and create a new ID - you will need a different non-Apple email address to do this.
Sign in with it in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars and enable 'Mail' in the checklist there. You should be asked to create a new @icloud.com address.
This account will then appear alongside your present one in Mail. Your lawyer can access it in the usual way - if he doesn't have a Mac he can set the account up manually using the server settings here:

  • How can you share a iPhoto library with another account user

I have recently seen the light and swapped from Windows to my lovely new iMac. However I am rather confused how I can configure my iPhoto library so my wife can view the same library in her account on the same machine (this was a simple thing within Windows, using shared folders). Am I missing something or do I have to duplicate the same library and place into my wife's account and then update each time we upload some photo's? Please help!

This may not be the "neatest" solution possible, but it's one that works. Just as iPhoto makes it easy to share photos between computers on the same network, you can also share photos between accounts on the same computer; but you'll have to be logged in with iPhoto running.
    1) Configure iPhoto in your account for photo sharing (from iPhoto, select Preferences > Sharing> Share my photos).
    2) Enable fast user switching from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options. This is the key to the process, which will allow you to remain logged in while your wife is also logged in. It's also a very handy feature if you and your wife use the computer a lot from your own accounts.
    3) Enable "Personal File Sharing" and "Remote Apple Events" from System Preferences > Sharing > Services. [I had already done this step, so I'm not sure if it's strictly necessary]
    4) With iPhoto up and running in your account, use Fast User Switching to log into your wife's account (ie, you remain logged-in). [The Fast User Switching menu will be in the upper right of the main menu bar.]
    5) From her iPhoto preferences, select Sharing > "Look for shared photos" if it's not already switched on.
Your photos will magically appear in the left hand column of your wife's iPhoto application using the name you designated in your copy of iPhoto.
Caveats: performance is not very good, you must be logged in and have iPhoto running, HP printers (if you have one) don't work well with fast user switching
Other solutions might be possible by "drilling a hole" into your account by altering the Unix permissions. I've used this technique to make my iTunes library available to other users on my machine. Such a solution would no doubt improve performance.
Finally, there are third-party products that allow you to manage multiple iPhoto libraries. I've never used these, but they might allow you to load the iPhoto library from another account assuming permissions are properly set.
Hope this is of some use; I'm sorry if it's a little more complicated than you might have expected.

  • How to share icloud drive storage plan with my family members?

I have a plan  big enough for me and my family group. It is not about sharing pictures. It is all about sharing space. In such a way, my wife and kids would have full access to the whole thing.

Feedback is the way to go.  Keep in mind iCloudis only a couple years old, and they recently changed the storage/payment arrangements, and Family Sharing is new in its present form.  All of which means there is room for improvement.  Apple is usually pretty good at accepting users' needs and making adjustments.
