Cannon HF100

I'm looking to buy a Cannon HF100 camera. I use imovie 09. Would anyone recommend this model, or is there a better camera for a decent price?

Help, major user error! I am trying to import video clips from my Canon HF100 HD To iMovie 6. I am using a SCHC card reader for a class 4 16GB memory card. I used File>Import and at the dialogue box I could see several sub-directories including "CLIPINFO" and "STREAM". Both directories had files that looked like the clips I had taken. STREAM files had .MTS extensions and CLIPINFO had .CPI extentions. However the Import dialogue box grayed out those files and I could not Import them. I recieved a Quicktime error that I don't remember.
Which is wierd because when I went back to get the exact file extenstions and error messages I got a completely different outcome, although still not what I wanted. At the Import dialoge box there was only the root directory, (am I an old DOS user or what?) "Private". It allowed me to open it and it imported a still photo of the first clip thumbnail. I checked Finder and saw the old directory structure and files were still in place. I am able to view my clips on the camera's playback.
Long story, is there a short answer?

Ok.. the preview look good in the log and transfer menu, but when I transfer them and click on them in the browser they play super blured, pixeled, funky.. What am I not doing?? Thanks for any help!!

Recording using Stereo Mics in Final Cut Express

Hey guys, I'm a complete newbee to recording video and was wondering if anyone could offer some help. Basically, I'm trying to record a music videos to upload on to you tube. I have a Macbook Pro, a Cannon HF100, 2 x CS1000 mics, FCE and an Mbox audio card.
I want capture the video through my camera, and the stereo audio through my external microphones, and edit it all within FCE.
What would be the best way of doing this? At the moment, I'm comletely stuck.

Hello, and welcome to the FCE forum!
The only good way to do this is connect the mics to your camcorder when you do your filming. You can do this with a Y-cable (2x XLR-> 1/8" mini stereo) or a mixer. The video & audio will be recorded together, perfectly sync'd, and when you Log & Transfer from your HF100 into FCE they will remain sync'd in your clips.
You can't simultaneously capture (log & transfer) video and audio from independent sources.
It is possible to record video and audio separately, and import them separately into FCE, but then you have the problem of sync'ing them in FCE.

Avchd quality

I have a cannon HF100 vid camera when I have imported and edited footage on Imovies the quality when it is burned onto dvd is bad. If I buy Final Cut Pro X and edit and burn a disk as AVCHD files to play on my PS3 would the quality be just like playing through the camera onto my tv ? Can anybody help ??

I also have the HF100 in the US NTSC model. I have burned very good quality DVD masters from the HD files I edited from the HF100, but I will say it took some experimenting to get the best settings for DVD. One key thing is to go directly from the HD files in your editor to the DVD through compressor or other product. Don't try to render to a lower quality format then send that format to compressor. You lose quality each additional rendering step along the way in most cases. IMHO, two of the most important factors in your DVD final product will be the bit rate you set for your rendering/compression, and your use of the right aspect ratio for a DVD. For quality DVD video, the bit rate should be between 5Mbps and 10Mbps. As a rule, the higher the bit rate, the higher the video quality. Pick the proper aspect ratio for DVD ... it's standard. How you set your editor to convert the HD 16:9 frames to DVD format frames will also make a huge difference. You should not "distort" the HD images to fit the DVD format, but rather crop if possible to "conform" them. That way, the actual video that makes it to the display has not been contorted. Of course, interlace and field order are also important. This is general informatin only. Sorry I could not give you actual steps since I do not do DVD work anymore. Some of the other guys might have more pointed info for you. Best wishes.

Canon 1DX support was added to ACR in version 6.7, 7.1. An updated CS6 should be at level ACR 8.6. If your ACR is not at level 8.6 try using CS6 menu Help>Updates. If that does not install ACR 8.6 try downloading the ACR and DNG 8.6 converter and see if ACR 8.6 will install into your CS6.

My ipad 4 will not sync my photos i took with my cannon digital camera, it worked 1 week ago and now will not??If in put it under video on the ipad i can not share or email.

Had an Ipad 2 from Christmas 2011, used a digital camera to record video, a cannon ELPH series, I put the video in my Iphoto on my mac book pro and WAS able to sync them to my photo on my IPAD. The little photo with the camera icon on it was great no problems.!!! Then I was not able to do this any more, I had to drop the video into the video icon on the ipad from my itunes accunt, however you can not send the video to any one from the ipad like you can under the photo Icon, the buffering was also bad. I got a new Ipad 4 for Christmas and again I was able to sync video when i connected it to my ipad and video i recorded with the cannon camera from halloween showed up GREAT!!! This was stored on my Ipad under the Photo Icon and I can send an email, imessage, etc with the vieo. Fast forward another week put my Christmas videos on my mac book pro and when i plugged my ipad to my mac book to sync in it again did not work, it would not sync the video to my photos, though I JUST did it a week earlier and it worked (those videos are still on the IPAD 4 and work fine). Why can I not do it now, I can drop the video into the video Icon on the IPAD and watch, but you can not send it anywhere as if u had it stored under the photo icon.???

What is the file name of the video(s) you want to sync?
Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Does the printer actually support BlueTooth? If the printer is wireless, then most likely it uses Wi-Fi. Did you read the user guide that came with it? Or contact Canon tech support at their website.

I just bought a brand new Cannon GL2 camcorder and I am trying to import...

I just bought a brand new Cannon GL2 camcorder and I am trying to import some video footage into Final Cut Pro version 5.01. Whenever I put up the Log and Capture screen and turn my camcorder on the computer starts to think(the spinning color wheel) and not let me do anything else not even press play unless I completely turn the camcorder off again which defeats the whole purpose of me even importing footage. I don't understand why the Log and Capture screen won't let me import any video my old Sony Digital Hi8 was importing just fine a day ago, but now that I bumped up to the GL2 for some reason the Log and Capture screen isn't doing it's job so well by the computer starting to think(the spinning color wheel) instead of working. I have used the Cannon GL1 in the past and it worked like a charm. So I don't understand why the GL2 wouldn't be any easier? It is just giving me this problem and I don't know wether it's the firewire bus or what? Can someone please help me with my dilemma?

Ha...ha..very funny...but ah yeah from reading other posts on the "Canon" GL2 I figured out that you can't have multiple devices plugged into the firewire bus at the same time while you're importing video into Final Cut Pro. That's a HUGE bummer...thanks guys for your help you where fast and reliant. But now I have another problem my internal hard drive only has 4 GB out of 75 GB and my applications take up at least 40 GB of space. How am I going to connect my 600 GB external hard drive to the computer and import footage at the same time? Can you guys help me with this now?

Use of the tools is pretty much the same in all versions of the program.
"Edit" is a menu item in Photoshop Elements Editor. Don't you see this?

Airport extreme: my macbook, cannon wireless printer, ipad and iphone cannot connect to internet when Apple Tv and/or PS3 is connected

Please help! I have an Airport Extreme (model A1143) as my router, and I have several devices connected to it wirelessly and wired. I have my Macbook, Macbook Pro, iPad 1, iPhone 4S, HTC Thunderbolt, Cannon wireless printer, and Apple TV (gen 1) connected wirelessly. I have my PS3, an external hard drive and DirecTV connected via ethernet cable (but sometimes my PS3 is also connected wirelessly).
I began to notice a few months back that my wireless printer had connection errors and could not print. And I noticed soon after that, from time to time, the internet connection on my Macbook and iPad was extremely slow, to the point that I could not surf the web. I tried several different printers before realizing that this problem was happening only when I had my PS3 turned on. I tried both PS3 wirelessly and wired, but the problem persisted. I figured it was a problem with the PS3, so I just made sure that PS3 is off when I need to use the wireless in the house. But I recently bought an ATV (gen 1) and also noticed the same problem when it was connected to the Airport Extreme (wirelessly) - i.e., Ican't print, and my internet is super super slow on macbook, ipad, etc.
So, it must be that my Airport Extreme is the problem, not the PS3 or the ATV. Is there anything I can do to fix this (i.e., some setting that has to be changed)? Or do you think that my Extreme is just dying out on me and it's time for a replacement (I bought it about 5 years ago)?

This problem, for reasons unknown to me, has resolved itself on its own. After several attempts finally everything decided to work. How does stuff like this happen? Thank you.

I am unable to print PDF's using either Adobe Reader or Safari. In Adobe Reader, I get an error message from my Cannon printer that says, "/usr.libexec/cups/filter/pstocupsraster failed". In Safari, I can only print the first page of a PDF.

To try to resolve this problem, I have done the following actions.
1 - I have run Disk Warrior.
2 - I have repaired permissions.
3 - I have deleted all plist that are either Cannon or Adobe.
4 - I have downloaded and installed the lastest versions of Adobe Reader and the Cannon printer drivers.
I am still unable to print PDF's.
In Safari, I can print only the first page. In a multipage PDF, Safari only seems to recognize the first page.

Quit Safari.

The lens has an external groove for the ring flash pawls, but filters I've found do not. The external diameter of the filters does not allow the ring flash pawls to reach the lens groove. I either need a filter with an external groove or one with no part larger diameter than the threads. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

Which lens are you using? This adapter will work, so long as the front element doesn't rotate.

How to print from Macbook Pro on a Cannon MP610 printer?

I have recently bought a Macbook Pro, and I have a wireless network set up at home.
I have no problems connecting to the internet or the network. But I can't seem to access the printer. I have a Cannon MP610 Printer. This printer is connected to the PC, which is connected to the modem. The printer is unable to connect directly into the modem which is unfortunate
It's a fairly big network. We have a master pc that is connected to the modem. This master computer also has a usb printer. We have a secondary pc ethernet linked to the master pc, which can connect to the internet and the printer via the ethernet.
The modem is a Thomson TG782T ADSL.
We have 3 windows O/S laptops, and 2 MAC O/S laptops.. No laptop can access the printer. Only the internet.
Can you access a printer from a laptop through the modem through the master computer the the printer?
The printer is turned on, and the PC is always running. The printer and file sharing is turned on.
What would be the least expensive way I could go about fixing this problem?
I have heard about people downloading Gutenprint; so i downloaded it, but couldn't get it to run.
I have tried many different ways, and after adding a new printer and finding it on the network.. is then says it is in the queue list.. but won't print. It just sits there until you cancel it.

Installing printers on Mac's is usually a two step process. The first is to install the driver software if it is not on the Mac already and the second is to add the printer queue. Looking at the IP address listed this is going to be the address of the Thomson router. If all computers were using the same address then this would be a problem but given that you used a web service to tell you the address then this won't be the case.
To see what IP address, subnet mask and gateway address you are have configured, you can use Command Prompt on XP and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter. This will give you a list of all the network settings in the PC. Write these down for later reference.
For the Mac you can open System Preferences > Network and select which port you are using (Ethernet or Airport). Then in the right pane will be the current IP address. To get more information you can press the Advanced button and then select the TCP/IP tab in the next pane.

It's an SMB queue and I suggest that we leave that process for now. Besides you will need to know the IP address of the XP sharing the printer before we can try that process. So let's just try to get the computers appearing in the Windows Add Printer browser and using the Gutenprint driver instead of the Canon.

I have a bunch of old HF100 footage that I want to re-edit. Trouble is, I can't remember which ones are 30p and which are 60i (I want to tag them differently with iMakeFullHD). Other than looking at them, is there some quantitative way of telling which is which -- either from the mts file metadata or from the imported iMovie 09 movie metadata?
