Cannon Rebel XS EOS CR2 files won't open in CS6

My photoshop is completely up to date, my RAW plug-in is up to date, and I even attempted to download the DNG converter all to no avail. No matter what I try my CR2 images won't open in anything. My camera is listed as one of the supported cameras. I've tried everything I could find on the forums and on other searches but still cannot get my files to open in Photoshop. The worst part is that they were opening last week prior to my updating. Are there any suggestions as to what I can do to get this solved?

If you have CS2 the latest version should be ACR 3.7.
ACR 4.x is only for CS3. If you download the 3.7 ACR and install it correctly ( be sure to follow the instructions precisely!) you should be OK.

  • .CR2 files won't open in Photoshop CS4

I recently got CS4 Extended version of Photoshop and need to work on my RAW files, but they won't open. I can see the thumbnails in Bridge and when I try to open them Photoshop says they're "not the right type of document"...so...not sure what to do. I've done a ton of research and cannot figure out why these files are unable to open. I need help!

I've had the same problem recently and worked on the solution this morning.  I havn't read the full info stream here, but can tell you what finally worked for me today.
I also have CS4, and recently bought a Canon 7D.  My .CR2 files would not open, due to proprietay issues with the new camera.
I first had to buy a download of WinZip, since I wasn't able to open any download from Adobe.  The WinZip was about $30.  Next, I went back to Adobe/downloads/updates and used Find Product Updates menu.  I found the compatable update of RAW plug in was 5.7 for our CS4 version.  I clicked the link to this download, and began the process by clicking Save.  I then went to the Download folder and found the file from Adobe in the WinZip folder.  At this point I went back to the Adobe download site and printed out the download instructions concerning where to find the old plug in, what to do with it, and how to install the newer downloaded plug in.
After all this, I opened CS4, Bridge, located my first .CR2 file, and it worked just fine.  I was also able to convert these .CR2 files, once opened, to DNG files.
    Hope this helps.

  • Recovered CR2 files won't open with CS3

Hey, I need help with this!
I worked in a photoshoot with a Canon EOS Rebel XSi and SD memory; then I had troubles trying to download them because the memory wouldn't let me do it, so I used the 'PC Inspector Smart Recovery' and I recovered all my CR2 files indeed. BUT! some of them won't open with Photoshop CS3, most of them do, but there's just some others that won't open and I really need to get this job done
My camera files always worked perfectly with photoshop CS3, plugins are installed, I really don't know what went wrong.

I am having a similar problem.  I downloaded CR2 files from my camera to my computer and CS3 Bridge will not recognize the files, allow me to open in Camera Raw or open in CS3 Photoshop.  I also stuck the same memory card in a Lexar mem card reader and attempted to download to my Mac in CS4 Bridge and that version of Photoshop and Bridge won't recognize the files either, however the CR2 files do appear, where I can view the thumbnails, in iPhoto.  All original files are still on the memory cards (4 cards worth of wedding photos!).  I've downloaded Camera Raw updates for both cs3 and cs4 on my windows pc and my mac and still no luck.  I'm at my witts end! Help!

  • CR2 files won't open in Photoshop CS2

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT and my Photoshop CS2 software won't open these images. CR2 is listed in the Raw file format but selecting Raw doesn't open them. I have downloaded the latest Raw update. I am using windows. Can anyone help me??? Many thanks, Patricia

  • .CR2 files won't open with Elements 9 plug in

I get the following error message when I try to open .CR2 files:  "Unable to use the Camera Raw plug-in.  It is not compatible with this version of Photoshop Elements".
I'm using PSE 9.0.3 with Camera Raw 6.5 plug-in installed on Win7 32bit PC. The photos were taken with a Canon Rebel T3i which is on the compatibility list.  The camera was just purchased in January and this is the first time I've tried to open RAW.  I used the update inside Elements to make sure I had the most recent version of Elements and the plug-in.  Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?
    Kaye

The 6.4.1 installer download seems to be the correct one.  I was asking about the 6.5 installer, since that is the one that seems to be in place when you get the error message, whether it was the PS version and somehow PSE knows.
After your 6.4.1 install fails you might run the Adobe Support Analyzer to see if it finds any troubles:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/loganalyzer/
You can try to search your entire hard-drive for Camera Raw.8bi and find all such files to see if they are all the same size and date or if some are older or newer, and post what you find, where.
Some of these files may be under hidden folders so you may need to go into your Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View tab  and enable Show hidden files folder a drives.

  • .CR2 files won't open in CS3 on  a new WIN7 'puter

I just got a new 'puter with WIN7 installed. I installed CS3 and updated ACR to 4.6, (removed the old .8bi, (or whatever it was), file first). I am shooting a Canon 40D BTW...
I still can't open .CR2 files - I ge something like: "could not complete your request as it is not the right kind of document". They will not open in Bridge or CS3.
My discussion with tech support left me with "Bridge can't open .CR2 files..."
My next step, unless someone here can offer something easier/better, is to uninstall CS3 and reinstall.
    Thanx,
    Ron

Do you see Camera Raw listed correctly in Photoshop > Help > About Plug-in?
Don't re-install until you've tried resetting all three sets of preferences and purged the Bridge cache.

  • CR2 files won't open

I have CS3 on Windows 7, and a canon 6d. I cannot open my CR2 files.  Every time I try it says that it can't open because it's not the right type of document.  Please help. I fear that I will need to buy a newer version of photoshop, but it would shock me if I couldn't just update it somehow. Thanks.

    Hi,
Unfortunatly photoshop cs3 can't use the camera raw plugin required for the canon 6D camera raw files.
(requires camera raw 7.3 and photoshop cs3 only can go to camera raw 4.6)
Besides upgrading to photoshop cs6 you could use the 7.3 DNG Converter to convert your 6d files to dng copies which photoshop cs3 should open
or consider lightroom, which is cheaper than photoshop cs6.

  • Cr2 files will not open in cs6

I am running os10.6.8 and recently upgraged to cs6 from cs5. I have checked for software updates and my version is current. when I (attempt) to view in bridge or try and open cr2 files in the latest photoshop it will not allow. I can only see the cr2 icon but no image. HOWEVER -  I can view/open the files in my previous photoshop version (5) with no problem. I have seen reference to 'patches' without explanation as to how/when those are needed or is this the same as a latest software update? if so, patches sounds alot like a jankey duct tape and twine solution - just friken use the word SOFTWARE UPDATE - I think that is pretty clear.
Secondary question - I did a 30 minute search on this discussion board and found nothing. I don't understand how that can be, as I am sure this is a common problem.

FYI, Camera Raw versions and supported camera makes/models are listed here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
The Canon 5D MkIII was first supported in Camera Raw 4.1 *.

  • CR2 Files Won't Open In Photoshop CS5 - Camera RAW Updates Won't Install...

I've had to take some photo editing work home from the office and I need to open some CR2 (RAW) files on Photoshop CS5. When I drag the files into the program I get a notice that my Camera RAW does not support the files.
I've tried downloading updates for Camera RAW, all the way back to 6.3 (I'm currently using 6.0), but when I go to install I keep getting the message "Some Updates Failed to Install" "Update is Not Applicapable".
The photos were shot on a Canon 5D Mark II, not that it should make much of a difference. I'm wondering what's going wrong? I'm running OS 10.5.8 at home and I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

If you have CS2 the latest version should be ACR 3.7.

  • CC files won't open on CS6

My students say they can't open files they worked on under CC at home when the try to work on them here at the college under our CS6 (non-Creative Cloud) apps.

In another thread, I learned that "CS7.0" is an abandoned naming scheme for Creative Cloud. The error message is, itself, in error. Adobe's versioning nomenclature is very confusing.

  • Canon CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop CS4

I'm using a Canon EOS 600D (aka EOS Kiss X5), Photoshop CS4 (ver 11.0.1) with Camera Raw 5.7.0.213.
CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop, though the thumbnails are clearly visible and open in Windows Explorer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Yes, absolutely all of the quality and dynamic range is retained in the DNG, because it is still raw data.
Outside of upgrading to Photoshop CS5, which can open your files directly with Camera Raw 6.4.1, your only choice is the extra step of converting the .CR2 files to .DNG with the free DNG converter.
While you'll get all the quality your Camera Raw 5.x converter can deliver, you should keep in mind the Camera Raw 6.x converter has an entirely new, additional "2010 process" for converting raw images, which (depending on your settings) can actually deliver a higher quality conversion than the one you're getting with Photoshop CS4.  I think it's worth the cost of the Photoshop upgrade, personally.

  • 7d CR2 files won't show in Bridge CS4

I've run updates through Photoshop and Bridge trying to get my 7D photos to show as thumbnails in Bridge. They simply won't show and I can't find a way to make them show. When I try and open a CR2 file, the image opens in ACR 5.7, which i know isn't the latest version, but when I try to run updates again, it tells me there are no updates to install. Help!

You should be running ACR 5.7, not 5.6.
All updates to ACR contain unannounced, unpublished bug fixes and improvements, not just support for new cameras.  You should always run the latest version of ACR your version of Photoshop supports.
