Cannot access airport express with airport utility...

I've been using my old Airport Express, since it has a modem, to access my dialup service , I need to change the access number but Airport Utility reports that it can't access the AE with this version...(It sees it fine)...what do I need to do to change the number?  I've tried several different older versions of AU and get the same result....

Try the direct link.
http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1482/en_US/AirPortUtility56.dmg
I have been having some issues with the apple support and discussions area with my ISP.. something seems to be not compatible.
There is a free method .. since you need to pay for Pacifist.. there is a simpler free utility but it does the job .. unpkg
This is my version of Tesserax's which is of course just fine as well.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
2. Download and install unpkg.
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
For screen shots see this post.

  • I have just changed my network provided and now i can't find my 1st gen airport express with airport utilities

Hi, can anyone help. I've just updated my network with a new hub and now i cant find my 1st gen Airport express with the curreent Aiport utilities.

From your description, it sounds like the AirPort Express was configured to connect to your "old" router or hub...and, to do that,  the Express remembered the specific ID of that device as part of the connection credentials.
The Express is likely still looking for the "old" device for which it still has the settings to connect.
Since you changed to a new hub or router, the Express has no idea how to connect to this new device.
If this is the case......then the solution will be to reset the Express back to factory default settings....and then configure it again to connect to your "new" hub.

  • Setting up airport express with airport extreme 802.11n with Airport Utilit

    Hi,
I'm having trouble setting up my airport express(AX). Having recently bought the new Airport Extreme (AE) basestation, I can't figger out how to set it up to recognize the AX and allow me to stream airtunes. Previously I had the AX setup fine, but once I installed the AE, it no longer was recognized.
After resetting the AX, the airport Utility recognizes the AE and the AX as basestations, but I don't want to have to switch back and forth from wireless networks everytime I want to listen to music in another room. Airport Admin seemed to have been wiped out when I installed the AE, so any documents I've found on the Apple site refer to AA and not Airport Utility.
HAs anyone set up their AX on the new AE basestation?
    thanks!
    Rene

I am currently experiencing the same issue, except that I cannot for the life of me get the AX to:
    1) Stop flashing yellow - numerous resets -soft to default.
    2) The airport utility will not recognize it.
The airport utility sees the AE no problem, I got that up and running after a few restarts and am now able to log on to the network with my laptop.
I am new to Mac's and this is the 1st time I have tried to set up a network with one, I was excited about being able to use the AX to play my iTunes through the stereo in the other room and to hopefully use it to connect my X-Box to the internet. But I am starting to think that this is either above my skills or a fruitless endeavor. Any help would be most appreciated!
    Thanks

  • Cannot See Airport Express in Airport Utility

I've been browsing the other topics, but don't see one with my exact problems.
I got an Airport Express for Christmas and was able to get it to work on my parents network; but now that I'm at home, I can't get it to even show in the Airport Utility. I've reset the AX by holding down the button for over a second. I've set my Airport Extreme to be extendable and to be n/g compatible.
I've seen advice like making the name and pass match the base station, but I can't even get to a point where I can see it...
    Advice?
    Thanks,
    Chris

I had similar problems and was able to resolve my issue like Simon. I think you need to hard reset your Airport Extreme base station first, then open Airport Utility and reconfigure it using WAP2 encryption. Then hard reset your Airport Express (by the way, you need to unplug it, push the reset button using a paper clip and keep holding it down while plugging it back and wait until it flashes green 4 times, then release) then you should be able to see your airport express in Airport Utility, and reconfigure it to use WAP2 (I used the same password for both base stations) and, at least in my case, voila! all lights turned green and worked. Good Luck,
    Ron

  • Trying to set up Airport Express with Ethernet Powerline adapters

    Hello,
Having some problems trying to set up my Airport Express with Netgear ethernet powerline adapters.
I want to set up as follows:
Wireless Belkin router --- powerline <---> powerline --- airport express --- home stereo system
The problem I have is that I can connect the airport x in client mode & wirelessly play music using airtunes (until the sound breaks up) but itunes does not find the airport x when connected via the powerlines.
I have airport admin utility configured as follows:
    Airport tab:
Wireless mode: create a wireless network
Wireless network name: same as my wireless router SSID
Allow this network to be extended: unticked
    radio mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
    Channel: automatic
Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 personal (as per my router)
Wireless Password: as per my router
Verify Password: as per my router
    Internet tab:
    Connect using: ethernet
    Connection sharing: off (bridge mode)
    Music tab:
    Enable Air Tunes ticket
    no password set
In iTunes, I have home sharing on & share entire library selected with no password set.
    Using OS 10.6.5 & Airport Express 7.5.2
I can ping the IP address of the airport express when connected via the powerlines but cannot select the speakers in iTunes (they are greyed out).
    Any assistance would be appreciated....
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Thanks for the quick response...
As suggested, I connected up the Airport X to the Belkin and plugged in a pair of headphones. It didn't work, still could not select the Airport X as speakers.
Dug out my old Netgear DG834G and connected that up in place of the Belkin - it worked. Next connected in the Netgear powerlines and it still worked.
So, the problem is the relatively new Belkin F7D4401 router.
Looks like I will have to find an alternative 802.11n...
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards
    Simon

  • Airport Express with printer & hard drive with Time Machine

I have a MacBook that I'd like to backup its data. Concerned about the following (in level of concern from highest to lowest): theft, crash, fire.
I currently have an Airport Express with a Brother printer attached to it that my PC and MacBook print to.
I am really in a dilemma as to what to do. I was looking into Carbonite to get an offsite backup location of my data. (I figured offsite would cover all concerns of losing data due to theft, fire, or just a crash) However, Carbonite does not hold onto data you delete (ie, my photos and videos will fill up my hard drive eventually and I'd like to just archive them in one central spot when I am done accessing them on a regular basis-- ie delete them off my MacBook hard drive). That is like $55/year to do Carbonite... but, the only thing that will help me with over a hard drive in my house is a fire (and theft if a burglar were to find where my backup drive was in the house).-- Of course, I'd probably want a different location for my hard drive for that reason -- so, I'd have to buy another airport or just a time machine that has the wifi built in.
I've read lots of issues with the Western Digital trying to download programs onto your computer... I have one for my PC that I backed up photos manually and it did try to install programs when I attached it to my PC... not so much my Mac when I took some photos off it. I looked into getting another portable hard drive at Costco for my Mac, but realized that it would require reformatting to use on my Mac (as it was built for a PC).... something I wasn't sure if I was computer-savvy enough to do or if I did do it, would I end up with issues later on?
Anyhow... in the end, what do you all do to backup your data, especially photos and videos? Do you have smaller hard drives that you back up to and then when full move them to an offsite location? Can you have more than one "hard drive" backing up..... I was thinking it would be nice to have one larger hard drive that would potentially hold all my photos and videos so I can access anytime, but then have smaller drives of the same data that I can take to a safe deposit box and use as my super secure backup (no fire, no theft, no crash).
btw, When doing time machine, does it keep all the metadata with each photo?
Burning CD's is time consuming.... and, I have heard there are different qualities of disks out there... archival v. not... how long do the archival last v. the non-archival... or is that more of an issue for future generations not being able to access our photos?

You need to remember that the Time Capsule is both a wireless router and a hard drive all in one enclosure. If you don't need a wireless router, around $150 of the $300 for a Time Capsule is going to be in the router portion of the device.
The nice thing about the Time Capsule is that it is a network drive. All Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard will be able to back up automatically to a single device. The first generation of Time Capsules about two years ago had some power supply problems that affected some users. Apple announced a program for these users to replace their Time Capsules.
So, it depends on your requirements. If you are looking for a new, dual band wireless router and want to backup your Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard automatically using ethernet or wireless, the Time Capsule is a logical choice.
If you don't need a new router, then you'll need to look at a separate hard drive that will be attached directly to the computer using the USB or FireWire port. If you have two Macs, you'll have to get two hard drives if you want to do Time Machine backups correctly.
Most hard drives can be reformatted to work with Mac if you don't mind a few extra steps and Disk Utility (Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) does not look too complicated for you.

  • Can't configure airport express with laptop after 10.5.6 update

I can't configure airport express with laptop after 10.5.6 update
the airport express is seen but can't access configuration screen, I get the spinning wheel forever.

  • Can't see Airport Express from Airport Utility anymore

I unplugged my airport express when I went out of town for a week. Now that I'm back, I plug in the airport express and it just blinks amber. In Airport Utility I cannot see any networks. Other notes:
    - I'm running XP, using the Airport Express with Airtunes to run my stereo
    - when I 'View Wireless Networks' I see both the airport express and my neighbor's Apple base station (so it's odd that they don't show up in Airport Utility
    - I have tried resetting Airport Express several times, along with my wireless router, cable modem, and computer
    - I have checked to make sure software is up-to-date, and even re-installed the Airport Utility.
    - I recently purchased an iPhone, and before I left town it worked (with the Remote app and updated iTunes) with the stereo via the Airport Express
    - Both the computer and iPhone see my home network just fine, but Airport Utility sees nothing, despite rescanning
    - It is possible that either iTunes and/or Windows may have updated since this last worked a week ago.
    - I started debugging this three days ago with no progress (it is not intermittent)
    Any advice?

I still had phone support, and they showed me how to fix this.
The piece that I was missing is that after I reset the AX, I have to connect to it directly through the wireless connection (dropping to connection from my PC to my home wireless network). From this connection, I can see the AX in Airport Utility and change the settings.
One other piece of info, I was using a manual setup on the AX. This was necessary due to the 26 character WEP password (not using WPA2).

  • Airport Express with Extreme

    Grettings,
I have recently purchased an Airport Express with the desire to extend the range of my wireless home network. I have had no problems with the Airport Extreme (other than litmited signal coverage) but I can't seem to setup the Express to save my life. Here's what I've got:
-I plug the Express into the wall, the status light goes from green to amber to flashing amber.
-Airport Admin detects the Express but cannot communicate with it.
-I cannot update the firmware because the updater cannot communicate with the Express.
In my past expereinces with Mac products setup processes have been so simple that I'm a bit confounded by my inability to get this up and running. Is something wrong? What do I need to do?
Thank you, in advance, for your assistance!

  • Only my iMac can't find Airport Express through Airport Utility

I can't get connected to Airport express with my iMac Intel-G5. No problems with my MacBook Pro or iPhone. Even the connection under Windows XP with my iMac is possible! So there shouldn't be a problem with the Airport Express device (connected to my cable modem) itself.
I had similar problems in the last 2 weeks, but mostly deactivating and reactivating the airport express did the job. Now even this doesn't help anymore.
    Any suggestions/help appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
This may seem picky, but your iMac has either an Intel processor or a G5 processor. It can't have both.
Is your problem only with connection in AirPort Utility from your iMac, connection to the Internet, or both?
You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take a minute or so to try.

  • How to setup airport express with time machine

just bought airport express so i can extend my wifi range, can anybody help on how to set up! I have time machine 2gb, my house is wired with cat6 cable in all the bed rooms, but now only half my house get wifi,so i want to extend it.I know i have to go into air utility and change some stuff, but sure what stuff?

I assume that this is a new AirPort Express and you have not tried to configure it previously.
Locate the AirPort Express in the general area where you would like to have more wireless signal coverage.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the back of the AirPort Express
Power up the AirPort Express and let it run a few minutes. The amber light will be blinking slowly at this point.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of your Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically on your Mac, take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything for you. When you see the indication of Setup Complete, click Done.
    You should be all set.

  • Configuring Airport Express with PC

I'm trying to configure an Airport Express using the Airpot Admin Utility for Windows. I performed a hard reset on the Airport Express and the utility sees the Airport as confirmed by the name showing up as "Base Station xxxxxx" with the x's being the last 6 digits of the Airport MAC address. However, when I try to log in, it does not accept what I understand to be the default password after reset - "public". Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

According to Apple a "soft" reset is all you need to reset the base station administration password back to the default of "public." (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
Also, make sure you have the latest firmware for you AEBS. (ref: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremefirmwareupdate57formacosx.h tml)

I am going to wifi in my ipad I press airport express and after a while the answer in a window is that:it is not possible the shaping of my airport express with this software. Please could you help me?

You need to install an older version of AirPort Utility on your Mac. Here is a suggestion:

iOS devices will not be able to configure your older AirPort Express.

  • Is it possible to extend the range of one airport express with a second airport express?

    Hi,
We have a Time Warner router and have it hardwired to an Airport Express. Is it possible to extend the range of that one airport express with a second airport express?

... The new AirPort Express that I have is an 802.11n version, but the second one is an older model and I don't know which version it might be. Also, the system recently updated so I'm using the AirPort Utility 6.1.
If you are using Mountain Lion, AirPort Utility 6.1 is the version installed by default. It will not be able to administer "older" AirPort base stations.
For them, use AirPort Utility 5.6 which contains the features you need. It can administer your older Express as well as current production base stations.
AU 5.6 is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Mountain Lion will not allow you to delete its existing version of AirPort Utility. Just ignore it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist.
Note: For those with Leopard or Snow Leopard systems you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1 (this is confusing - a later AirPort Utility version for an earlier OS X version - but it is correct).
Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1536
