Cannot backup Iphone 4 to my iTunes after reimaging laptop.

I own a Dell, unfortunately, and recently got entriely overcome with viruses to the point where no software could help me get rid of them. In order to solve this problem I reimaged my laptop (which consists of only saving my music and documents on an external hard drvie, wiping clean the entire disk to factory settings and then starting over) Once finished, I redownloaded the newest version of iTunes (10.6 I believe) and plugged in my iPhone 4 to backup it up to my now empty laptop. However, when I plug it in iTunes will recognize my iPhone but will not sync it or back it up because it says, "The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library." It then asks if I would like to erase the iPhone in order to sync it to this library. I clearly do not want to erase my iPhone and I no longer have any saved backups because they were all erased in the reimaging of my laptop. What do I have to do in order to backup my iPhone to my laptop? This is a problem because I do not want to lose everything on my phone if it breaks or gets stolen etc. Please help.

That is correct. This is how it works. Iphone will sync with one itunes library at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content and replace with content foprm the new library.
You said you backed up your music/docs/etc. Just put them back on the computer an sync them to the iphone.
Everything on your iphone should be on your computer and you should always maintain a backup copy of your comptuer.
The iphone simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.

If the iPhone is locked to a US carrier, you cannot use the SIM card of another carrier on it to either activate it or use the iPhone.
If you want to use your iPhone with China unicom, you need to get it unlocked by your US carrier. Contact them to see what their unlocking policy is and if you qualify.

What was the full wording of the error message? Usually there is also a number or additional information.
Try placing the iPod in Recovery Mode and then restore
Next try DFU mode and restore.

Cannot backup iPhone 4S to iTunes due to an error

I continue to get an error message without a specific error code when trying to sync and update my iPhone 4S (5.1) to iTunes (10.6.1). This started after an Apple Techincian had me restore the iPhone because I was having WiFi issues, which continued even after the fact. This is a replacement iPhone 4S. My original 4S had battery issues and had to be replaced. Unbeknownst to me, Apple replaces with refurbished iPhones, a practice I do not agree with. I experienced the WiFi dropping from the get-go with the replacement/refurbished iPhone 4S, but hung in there hoping it was just a fluke. It appears this iPhone 4S will need to be replaced.
Back to the issue at hand. I have removed all backups from iTunes. Of course now I have no backups stored on iTunes or iCloud.I have run Disk Utilities to repair permissions. I have reset the iPhone. I tried to restore it, but it will not restore since it cannot backup current data. I have made sure all OS software is updated. I have made sure permissions are unlocked in Backup folder on my HD.
Any other ideas out there would be greatly appreciated.

i can only say about your wi-fi issues. have you tried settings-general-scroll down-reset-reset network settings.
you could also try pressing the wi-fi reset button on your router.

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me find a solution to my problem.
When a backup is attempted, it starts off as if it's working, then stops and the following error message appears: "iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected". But, the iPhone doesn't really disconnect! It must be some type of internal glitch.
The iPhone is a 3GS and I have mostly pictures and contacts, two songs, a total of 33 apps. The iOS is updated (6.1.6). I do not know if this phone was ever jailbroke. I have been able to backup this phone before, but cannot now. The last backup was 9/21/13, it is now 3/2/14.
Sorry if there is too much info, or not the correct info to find a solution!
Also, I must say that although I am not a tekkie, I've seen many different types of various programs and I find that iTunes is not very intuitive...don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, just my humble opinion.

A big THANK YOU!! to you! Your suggestions worked!
Before I changed USB ports (more on that in a sec...), I employed one of your suggestions that you gave to someone else with the same problem...and that was to clean the connector on the bottom of the phone with a soft dry tooth brush. I couldn't believe the amount of lint that came out! Especially what was found in either end...had to do some very careful picking. (Almost enough lint to knit a small sweater!!)
Changing the USB port was the second and final step required for a successful backup. My computer is a laptop, and I did have a USB Bluetooth adapter (for another device) installed. I removed the adapter, plugged the iPhone into that USB port, crossed my fingers...and it worked!!!
Now if I can figure out the rest of this darn program, I might upgrade to a new iPhone!

Hi, I hope someone out there can help with a problem I have with my iPhone 3GS currently running 4.1.
I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.0.1 and iTunes has not worked correctly since.
When I connect my iPhone to PC with a USB I receive the usual pop-up asking what I would like to do with the device, but when I open iTunes, the phone is not located and listed in Devices (devices not even shown on the menu).
I have tried all manner of different things to fix;
Restarted PC
Restarted iPhone
Opened iTunes before connecting phone
Connected phone before starting iTunes
Connected using different USB cables
Used different USB ports
Restarted Apple Mobile Device and iPod Service in Administrative Tools > Services
Uninstalled 10.0.1 and re-installed a previous version of iTunes
After all this, my iPhone is still not being recognised in iTunes.
Can anybody out there help please??

Hopefully someone on here might be able to help me also =)
I can't be 100% certain when but pretty sure it's since I updated to itunes 10 I haven't been able to sync or charge my iphone through my laptop, although it still charges through mains charger. My laptop makes a noise when I plug the iphone in but does not recognise it in windows or itunes. I have tried the above steps but cannot locate the phone anywhere in device manager or when in recovery mode. Have tried different cables and usb drives aswell as restarting etc.
Any advice appreciated

I determined this was due to a faulty USB connection. I was able to sync the phone because "Sync this phone over Wi-Fi" was enabled, but I could not restore over Wi-Fi.
I still have the problem that my apps will not sync from my computer to my iPhone.

IPhone icon disappeared from iTunes after successful iOS 8.1 installation

Just after I just successfully downloaded and installed iOS 8.1 onto my iPhone 5 from iTunes, I got the following message: "iTunes could not connect this phone. The session ID is missing". I have no idea what that message meant, but now there's no longer an iPhone icon showing in iTunes, although there was before I upgraded the iOS. I had successfully bought several "songs" from the iTunes Store and synced them just prior to uploading the new iPhone iOS. I guess now I will have to eject the phone improperly. Any idea what "ID" that message was referring to, and what I should do? I want to also upgrade the iOS of my iPad, but don't want the same thing to happen.
My new computer is a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, 2.8 Ghz processor, 8 GB memory, running OS 10.10 (Yosemite). iTunes has been working fine.

IPhone not appearing on iTunes after IOS 5 update

After installing IOS 5 iTunes update the computer asked to re-start my PC. I beleive that my connected iPhone 3GS was still updating so, when the computer re-started, the update to the phone terminated. After re-booting iTunes has been updated but my iPhone just has the image of the USB cable and the iTunes logo on it. Nothing I now do makes the iPhone appear on the iTunes directory. I have successfully installed the new firmware onto another iPhone 3GS but the original phone is unresponsive. Anyone know how to install the software onto the phone when it doesn't appear on the iTunes directory?

i have the same problem. although my mac didnt ask for restart, installation stopped half way through the updating, and it comes up with unknown error 1 , once ive managed to exit recovery mode( the usb and itunes logo) apple logo appears, and then its loading and THEN ITS TURNING ITSELF OFF and ON - > after that apple apears - loading... and yeah goes in circles.
I've tried to restore previous copy but itunes wont let me do it anymore, it comes up with an error.
I've edited hosts, and it's still not working.

It will only be where you put it.
If for some reason you failed to transfer it to your computer from your iphone before updating, then it is gone, unless you live in one of the countries that allows redownloads:
