Cannot browse shared folders via Guest Account

I have enabled the Guest Sharing Only Account, File Sharing and established shares on several folders in Leopard.
However, when I connect across my LAN I can only see the Public Folder on each computer with sharing enabled when connecting as Guest.
I have read through all of the material and it all states that you can share ANY folder to EVERYONE and this will allow Guest folder sharing.
It does not seem to work.

MaccyLeopard wrote:
The fact is that PUBLIC is a standard shared folder in any install of Mac OS but this doesn't make your home folder and the USERS folder readable too...
So your case is technically flawed...
Sorry, but your case is the one that's flawed. The Users directory and any newly created user's home directory are read only for everyone by default. As is Sites. All other default directories in a user's home directory (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, Movies, Music, and Pictures) are "no access" for everyone. To share a directory or file in Documents, you have to work up the hierarchy (one step...Documents). In Public, you don't.
Where does Apple's marketing literature say that it "allows for sharing of ANY folders without the express setting of permissions back up the folder hierarchy?" I'd be curious, because it simply doesn't (and isn't supposed to) work that way. It wouldn't be the first time that Marketing and Software Engineering departments had different views of something. If their marketing does say that, then yes, they're wrong.
It would appear that OS X doesn't work the way you want it to. That's fine, but the fact is that it works according to well-established standards for the underlying OS...Unix.

    Hi All,
I have got a an issue with the permissions i.e. I can log in to http://hostname:7001/analytics and open a report that is stored in "Shared Folders" but if I log in to http//hostname:7001/xmlpserver with same user I cannot see Shared Folders.
How to fix this issue? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your quick response Kishore.
The user is the Admin user. This user is part of XMLP_ADMIN group as well.
I can create a file from http://hostname:7001/xmlpserver in the shared folders but cannot see. I can see the same file from http://hostname:7001/analytics. any idea?

  • [SOLVED] Samba: Can browse shared folders, but can't open files

Hi all, I've been using Samba to share some folders from my Arch box over the local network, and have not had any issues until just now. As the title says, I am able to browse (via Samba, both on a different device and from the Arch box itself) the folders being shared as well as see their contents, but trying to open a file fails, as does attempting to create a file in one of the shared folders. Accessing the files from the computer itself directly (not via Samba) works fine.
The error given by Thunar when trying to create a file is simply:
Failed to create empty file "test file".
    Invalid argument.
Trying to read a file results in the same "invalid argument" error being given by the app that should open the file.
I've removed Samba and reinstalled, following the steps on the wiki to get it set up. Still have the issue.
Further, I only seem to be able to add shares via the smb.conf file - previously I was able to share folders via Thunar or the net usershare command, but now those also give an error:
    $ net usershare add tmp /tmp "tmp" everyone:F guest_ok=y
net usershare add: cannot convert name "everyone" to a SID. Undetermined error.
Any ideas on what could be causing the problems would be greatly appreciated!
    edit: my smb.conf file:
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

It seems your Samba is denying access to these files & dirs. My best guess would be that either the Samba user is not allowed to write (and read) those (in which case you'd have to modify the permissions accordingly) or Samba sets, when the share is mounted, the permissions such that your user is not allowed to read and write (you may in this case try to just set permissions for you to allow you what you want to do; or use "create mask" or "directory mask" or "writable" in your samba config. ).
Also, what do the logs say about this? According to your samba conf they are in /var/log/samba/%m.log where %m is the hostname or IP.

  • Cannot access shared folders anymore....

    Hi,
We have a naughty problem at the office for accessing shared folders .
We use G5 Xserve + Xraid serving home access to 12 macs.
Our problem started when we updated all machines to 10.5.2 (nor did we have a problem with 10.5.1 or with 10.5.0).
All machines login correctly, fetch their folders with their home accesses located in the Xserve, as allways did, BUT :
·Almost all the machines running Leopard (except two) CANNOT access shared items. They get Error -5002
·The old machines running Tiger (G3 Imac's) acess shared items without problem.
So after many weeks doing multiple tests, we got the following conclusions:
    ·Problem is not server related.
·Problem si related to Leopard clients , although not in all
·Problem is not related to the machine, but with the account (accounts that can access shared items do it on any machine, and accounts that can't, don't do it on any machine)
·It seems that the trouble is related somewhat with Kerberos authentication, but it's not related to tickets (renewing them is no use)
·If we create new account with new name, it can access shared items
·If we create new account with same name that of the faulty one (renaming the later), it CANNOT access shared items.
We have got a problem in the office, and no clue of solving it.... Have read all over apple discussions over the internet, and although some people have similar issues, they are not as close as ours....
And none of the solutions proposed have solved the problem.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, cause we are starting to get desperate
    Thanks everyone.

    new update:
we are able to connect to remote shared folders with a different remote server (dual G4) from every machine
machines who can connect to local server are INTELs, the one who can't are PPCs
    makes any sense to anyone?¿

  • With the latest OS X, released today (12 October) are you finding that 1, you cannot get rid of your guest account, and 2, the computer has slowed down?

I feel that since updating to 10.7.2, my MBP 15" feels a little slower, especially in the login screen, and I have this "Guest User" on my login screen, and I dont want it there!!! How can I get rid of it, and is anyone else having the same problems? Thanks!

Hi thanks for the answer... Apple have told me that the guest account can be deactivated, but not removed from the login screen and the lagged Bootup/Shutdown is due to the iCloud services coming online and the computer synching with iCloud!
Just wanted to share this with you if it helps.

  • Accessing windows server shared folders via IOS devices.

FileExplorer did it! Thanks a bunch.

Looking for suggestions on what route I should go in order to establish connections from IOS devices w/ VPN to windows server 2008 shared folders. Mostly just for employees to upload  files to, downloading isn't a big deal. I'm sure there's apps out there that'll achieve this goal so if I'm correct I'm looking for recommendations! Or if there's a better way entirely.

  • Cannot browse phone or synchronise

    Hi
I was wondering if somebody could help me. I have Nokia N70 and my set up is as follows:
    - Windows XP SP2
    - PC Suite 6.70.22
    - Connected via USB cable connection
My phone used to connect to my PC and synchronise with PC Suite and Microsoft Outlook fine. However, recently it just stopped. I have looked all over the discussion forums and tried everything - uninstalling and reinstalling PC Suite, uninstalling and reinstalling the USB device drivers, deleting all calendar entries etc. The error message I get when I try to synchronise is "PC Sync has encountered a problem and has terminated the synchronisation." Also, I cannot browse the phone via Windows Explorer - when I click on Nokia Phone Browser\Nokia N70 an error dialog appears that just says "Operation could not be completed." The phone USB device drivers appear to have installed correctly in the Device Manager (on some installs they didn't but I ran the Nokia PC Suite Cleaner and afterwards they installed fine).
Any help would be appreciated. I'm beginning to think my PC is fine but my phone isn't.
    Thanks
    Mik

It helps if you can provide all relevant data, otherwise I will just end up suggesting nonsense.
It seems the new profile thing has something to do with this, but I cannot suggest anything.
    About the browsing problem:
I am sure you have read the "32dll" - fix suggestion from this forum (I let you dig it up though :-) for the operation could not be completed. It is normally for XP SP´1, but if you do a lot of editing in your PC on your own, that might help.
If not, unistall again and run PC Suite Cleaner from www.nokia.com/pcsuite -> support and install PC Suite 6.70.22 again.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot open files created in shared folders by Windows 7

    Hi.
I've been having issues with my shared folders.
My scenario is that I primarily work on my Windows 7 machine and save a copy on my MacBook so I can work on the same file when I'm out and about. I have no issue saving the files, or even browsing the shared folders on my MacBook. I can create, edit, save and delete files in the shared folder from my Windows machine without problem. The issue is that I'm unable to open any of the files created by Windows on my MacBook; it shows a prompt saying "You do not have permission to open document (filename)." I can't even see the thumbnails of image files created by Windows.
On the MacBook there is only one Standard user account which I use to login, and one Sharing Only account which I use to connect from the Windows machine with Read/Write permissions granted on my shared folders. The WINS workgroup has also been set to the same value as on the Windows machine.
I am able to move the files to Trash, but that's all I can do to them, which defeats the entire purpose of me having a portable computer. My shared folders were setup when I was still on Snow Leopard and had no issues before.
It's a hassle to have to bring a USB drive around to my meetings, and I'm completely clueless on what actions I must take to rectify this issue. Anyone out there ever have this issue? Any and all help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

CR 8.5 is not supported on 64 bit OS's or ANY Terminal Servers.
The location for 32 bit applications on a 64 bit OS is \windows\syswow64.
    Good luck

  • Folders marked for privacy in spotlight viewable in guest account

Say I select the Spotlight preference pane and add a couple of folders that I want to be excluded from searches. Now I log out and then log in again as a guest account user. I launch System Preferences and select Spotlight, and there I see all the folders that I had marked for privacy in my own account.
I attempt to remove them from the list, and I'm able to do so! Fortunately though, when I now attempt to search for these folders and their contents, I'm unsuccessful. But the thing is, when I log out and log back into my own account, the folders I previously marked private have indeed been removed from the list, evidently via the guest account.
This certainly has to be a bug, isn't it?

Well, I've set the permissions of these folders and their enclosed contents to Drop Box for Staff and No Access for Everyone. And as I've said, I added them to the privacy list in Spotlight, to exclude them from search results. Yes, they are persistent. When I log out and back in, they're still on the list and unsearchable.
My point is that I don't expect to see these folders listed in the Spotlight privacy list in any other user account, least of all the temporary guest account that Leopard has introduced, nor that I can actually remove them from the list while I'm in the guest account.

  • Cannot browse/choose Aperture photos via Finder

I am constantly frustrated by trying to choose photos for various online apps (Google , Flickr, etc.) via Finder.  How can I choose photos easily via Finder from my Aperture projects?  Why oh why does Apple make this so difficult?
To recap: when using a program or an online service to upload/choose photos, you cannot "browse" the Aperture library via FInder.  It just sits there, apparently "locked" away.
This is one area where PCs are far and away superior to Macs.  Help me!
    Frank

Perhaps you need to study up on what Aperture actually is. It's not a file browser, it's a database. Like any database you simply need to use the tools provided to access the data.
That's the first - and most simple - part of the learning curve you need to grasp. The second is that if you use Aperture (or simiar apps, like iPhoto, or Lightroom) they become your "go-to" app for anything you need to do with your photos. They replace the Finder for accessing this data. So, anything you need to do, you do with or via Aperture.
This is one area where PCs are far and away superior to Macs.
Not really. On your PC you used folders and files to manage your Pics. You can do exactly the same on your Mac, but if you want to do that, why are you using Aperture?
The first one is the one you want:
There are many, many ways to access use your files in Aperture:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the Aperture Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the Aperture Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the Aperture Window to the desktop, there export will make a full-sized copy your Preview of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the Aperture Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.

I cannot add a Wi-Fi guest network. Gone to Utilities>Airport Utilities and all I get is an image/browser of my Airport Extreme. Looking for the browser window which has the title Wireless but cannot find anywhere. What am I doing wrong?

Open AirPort Utility. The first screen looks something like this:
Click on the AirPort Extreme and another screen will appear. Click Edit, then the window with the Wireless tab will appear.
If you do not see these screens, you will need to start over and configure your AirPort again.
