Cannot cancel send and other concerns

I use Mac Mail with IMAP gmail, usually it works well. Today I was composing a message, and having learned my lesson previously I waited until the last minute to apply the attachment I intended to send. Unfortunately I mis-clicked and attached the 50MB wav file insted of the 5MB mp3. It immediately started uploading the 50MB file to my drafts folder. I have repeatedly clicked on the cancel send button in the lower left without luck. In fact, the cancel send button has never worked for me when uploading a draft.
Now I'm waiting for gmail to choke on the file which is five times larger than the server will accept since the last time I force-quit mail in the middle of an operation it totally munged my inbox.
I have two questions: What's the deal with the cancel send button? And is there an option somewhere which will prevent the mail application from uploading attachments over a certain (hopefully configurable) size to the drafts folder?
I like the fact that it uploads drafts to the server, but I don't want it to monopolize my upstream bandwidth. Especially if I change my mind about an attachment or mis-click.

Your questions have been answered haven't they?
You answered the first yourself...
What's the deal with the cancel send button?
The cancel button is the little circle with an x next to the status bar while uploading, usually you don't see it for very long unless you're sending a pretty big file or on a slow connection. It's in the "Mail Activity" pane which doesn't appear by default.
And the second Mulder answered quite well...
And is there an option somewhere which will prevent the mail application from uploading attachments over a certain (hopefully configurable) size to the drafts folder?
No, there's no such option
You could also take the account offline in Mail until you've got it right and chosen the correct attachment, or you could turn off the internet connection to stop Mail communicating with the server. You could also install a different email client, like Eudora for example, that does have an attachment size limit AFAIK.

    Since a number of weeks I cannot not send and receive e-mails.

  • Thunderbird works fine, Apple Mail can't send (and other problems)

    I have both Thunderbird and Mail setup exactly alike. Thunderbird can send mail just fine, every time, from any location. Mail was able to send messages a few times but for the last few days refuses to send anything.
    Here's the setup:
    Four smtp servers
    mail.bellsouth.net
    mailer.louisiana.edu
    smtp.coxmail.com
    smtp.central.cox.net
    each is setup with password SSL authentication. Each works just fine on any other computer and even on this one with Thunderbird. Apple Mail is the only problem. (and yes - ALL SETTINGS ARE EXACTLY CORRECT)
    NO - port 25 is NOT the issue - it works fine with other software on this computer and others - it is ONLY Apple Mail which can't manage to connect to the servers.
    I use an AirPort extreme and have reset it repeatedly. (I can usually connect to an smtp after doing so but only until Mail attempts to send) I have tried a direct ethernet connection as well. Same results.
    Mail refuses to connect to any smtp server. (it connects to the POP servers just fine) Occasionally, if I retype in the smtp password, or even delete it and turn off SSL, it will connect for a short time. (until I try to send a message)
    What's the deal?
    I see others have similar problems, but all seem to be ISP related. In this case, I've controlled for everything I can think except Apple Mail.
    A few other problems, maybe related or not:
    Mail has NEVER saved any messages I have sent out in any type of 'sent' folder. Sometimes the folder appears, sometimes it doesn't, but it is always empty. And yes, the setting to 'delete messages in the sent folder' is set to NEVER. So they should all be there.
    Additionally, the very FIRST note I created was saved in my Inbox as it should have been. NOT ONE single subsequent note has saved - I lost every one of them. (I also can't seem to find any means to manually save the note - how ridiculous)
    Finally, though it isn't that important at the moment, when Mail can't manage to connect to an smtp server, it just sits there and tries to send forever. Sometimes it will tell me it failed and suggest another server, sometimes not. In all cases, there does not seem to be a "STOP" button or command to tell Mail to quit transmitting/receiving.
    I'd really like to use this program since it integrates with iCal and Addressbook, but this is getting absurd.
    Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Who is your isp?
    If it is Cox they say on their site that you have to use only their smtp server.
    Other than the mailer server (of which I have no info), I question the ssl setting.
    Cox specifically say to not use ssl when setting up the outgoing server.
    Bellsouth do not appear to require authentication and do not use ssl either.

    "each is setup with password SSL authentication. Each works just fine on any other computer"
    Are any of the other computers mac's?
    You say that "it works fine with other software on this computer" - what is this other software that is using ssl and port 25 to connect to the smtp servers?
    Port 25 is not used for ssl, use either 587 (standard) or in some cases 465 (non-standard).

  • Cannot restore ipod and other issues.

    If someone can solve my ipod issues, you will totally make my birthday. Here's the deal. Sometimes when I connect my Ipod to my computer, it sees it as a just a removable disk drive. When that happens, Itunes tells me that my ipod is corrupt. When it tells me I should restore, it then tells me error 1418. I followed the steps on the post on here about that error code and it doesn't work. However, sometimes my computer recognizes my ipod, a message will pop up from memory card manager saying failed ot locate supported file types or there are no photos found on this device. Then my ipod will sync in itunes and start copying files. It says it's copying (which in actuality it's not copying anything or i might get a song or two to copy to my ipod) but then it stops and a message pops up saying, The ipod "Mike's ipod" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found. I just don't know what to even try anymore. I've looked at so many posts and still nothing works. Please if anyone can help me I'd appreciate it so much!!!

    Hi,
    Ok, there seems to be a problem... I've now been running Disk First Aid Erase on my iPod for an hour and a half. So far the blue bar showing progress seems to be stuck on about 5mm in...
    Btw... there's been 2 people w probs posting here (I couldn't find the link to make a new post and joined this as it had similar probs)- the original guy has sorted his problem. Mine revolves around an iPod that showed up corrupted when I plugged into my Mac after not using the iPod for a couple of months.
    iTunes can't restore it - error sign... As it also now shows up unrecognizable when I plug it into my Mac but with a "you can intialize" possibility I'm trying that as suggested. That takes me to Disk First Aid where pod erase seems to be stuck....
    Hope somebody out there can help... thanks!

  • G5 locks up when logging out and other concern

    This has become a problem over the past year. I know that it is an old single processor, first of the Power Macs, legacy machine and OS. I have gone through all various check system/disk evolutions with Apple and TechTool Utilities.
    Also, when I have a software glitch, I can never get the Send To Apple report to "send". I get a message that reads something along the line of 'not being able to connect to Apple'. Why, the legacy problem again? If so, I am suprized that I get iTunes and Safari updates.

    I don't think it has anything to do with it being a "legacy" Mac.  I have a Power Mac G5, running Leopard, and it runs quite well.
    Locking up when logging out is usually caused by a process that is running and the OS is not able to quit it.  It may be related to an app, or it may be a background process.  If you restart (or log out and log in) and then immediately log out, does it lock up?
    As a test, you can try creating a new user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.  Log out of your usual account and log in to the new account.  Do some things you normally do, then try logging out.  Does it lock up?

  • Slow MBP after Yosemite install and other concerns

    Hi
    There are a few discussions on this topic, they did not help due to the fact that I have no clue what to do or if I even have a problem.
    The problem:
    My MBP is slower after I installed Yosemite, sometimes the wheel of death pops up and freezes what I am busy with in Safari. Apps take longer to open than usual.
    I have added EtreCheck results from this morning.
    Please give advice on:
    How to improve the speed.
    Whether there is there something in the results that I should be concerned about.
    Hardware that should be updated.
    Should I get an app to delete or prevent unnecessary files (from apps?) from being saved without my knowledge.
    Thanks

    Hi epwebb,
    The good news is that you have a good MBP. It seems to be hugged by that google crapware that you have on your Mac. They spy on you, use the bandwidth that you pay for and hugging your Mac obviously at your cost.

  • Cannot load iWork and other password questions

    hi
    i just got a iMac desktop - OS X 10.4.10. First, my OS disk says Leopard but in the drop down menu for 10.4 it says Tiger. So Im not sure which is correct
    my real problem is i cannot load iWork software. i have been trying for hours. it keeps asking me for a password. when the geeksquad guy came this morning we decided not to set a master password. i did tonight figure out how to set a master password and did so. i restarted and tried to load the disk again and it is still saying invalid password. i am having trouble with my aol mail but the password is the biggest issue. i also have lots of photos and word files that i need to load and dont want to have problems with this (I assume i should load iWorks first). also will the second user have a problem loading her files?

    Hi, and welcome to the forums!
    i just got a iMac desktop - OS X 10.4.10. First, my OS disk says Leopard but in the drop down menu for 10.4 it says Tiger. So Im not sure which is correct.
    By drop down menu, do you mean under the Apple at top left, then "About this Mac"?
    Where do you see Leopard exactly?
    How did you set a Master Password? Was it for a User, or a Keychain, or what?
    Is there a User with Administration rights?

  • I recently purchased a used iMac and cannot load iPhoto and other apps?

    I recently purchased a used iMac.  It was wiped clean and has the newest version of Mac OSX installed.
    When I go to the app store, it shows iPhoto and has an accept prompt next to it, though when i enter my apple id to accept, it says I cannot do that as it was previously accepted, obviously by original owner.  It says i could purchase it, but there is no available prompt to purchase it.
    Questions: Do i have to purchase?  How do i go about doing that?
    Thanks!

    If the machine was originally configured for Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or earlier  you should have gotten the original DVDs, one of which had the iLife apps on it. If it came with Lion already pre-installed you can try Lion Recovery, OS X Lion: About but I doubt it will download the iLife apps for you. In short you probably have to buy them or get the original DVDs from the seller. Another option is to call AppleCare and for a nominal cost they will replace the original media. You can find their number by using the AppleCare Contact Info link.

    These are nowhere to be found, incredibly. I will switch to another program if I can cannot access simple tools.

  • Cannot access hotmail and other sites since upgraded to osx mountain lion

    Since I upgraded air to OS X Mountain Lion, I stoped accessing several websites such as hotmail (I can open first page but not after I login), and same for facebook, some bank accounts and even some sites that do not require passwords. Any tips? Many thanks from Brasil!

    Hi
    if i increase  the memory will the system become faster.
    No.  Installing RAM doesn't make a computer faster.
    Can we get it done this in Apple store
    Sure, but why pay for that when you can do it yourself.
    without upgrading hte memory cna we make this ystem to run faster ?
    Have you checked activity monitor to see if any apps or processes are takin up a large percentage of the CPU?

  • Drop down menu issues - "you are here" indicator disappears, and other concerns

    Hi! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Link to one of my pages (all of which are still work in progress): Organize
    I've been working to make a drop down menu in DW CC for days and have a lot of problems that still need resolution:
    1) I want the pages to clearly indicate "you are here" but can't get the color change or text pop-up to stay put on the secondary pages, nor does the background color work properly. It used to but somewhere along the line I managed to screw it up.
    2) The inline list is backwards! The order of the top-level nav, as is listed in the code, should be: Organize - Preserve - Disseminate - About Me.
    3) The top level navigation links aren't working. I think this has to do with my nesting structure between my local files and remote server, as I had a problem with that for another recent assignment.
    Thanks in advance!

    HTML code for list menu:
    <nav>
        <ul>
            <li><a href="#">Menu Item1 &#9660;</a><ul>
                    <li><a href="#">Sub_menu1a</a></li>
                    <li><a href="#">Sub_menu1b</a></li>
                </ul>
            </li>
            <li><a href="#">Menu Item2 &#9660;</a><ul>
                    <li><a href="#">Sub_menu2a</a></li>
                    <li><a href="#">Sub_menu2b</a></li>
                    <li><a href="#">Sub_menu2c</a></li>
                    <li><a href="#">Sub_menu2d</a></li>
                </ul>
            </li>
            <li><a href="#">Menu Item3</a></li>
        </ul>
    </nav>

    You need to put them in manually: http://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#smilies
    A toolbar was there when we were using phpbb for the forum software.
