Cannot Change Photo Caption in Lightroom 2.3

I am not able to get Lightroom 2.3 to change the caption of photos taken with a Sony A100.  The caption reads "Sony DSC."  All of my efforts to change this caption to something else have failed, including use of the "Save Metadata to File" command.  While the program initially reflects a change or deletion in the caption at first, when I navigate away from the photo and then return, it always reverts to "Sony DSC."  If someone can suggest a different approach or a workaround it would be much appreciated.  Note that this does not seem to be a problem with Photoshop Elements 6.  I have not yet tried to see if I can make this change in Bridge yet. Thanks.

I have given up trying to find a solution in LR.  It stubbornly overwrites "Sony DSC" on every photo I import and wipes out all changes I try to make in the caption field. I have not found a direct fix in LR, causing me nothing but frustration. But I have found a workaround which sounds complicated but is really quite simple.  The key is to import via the import utility in PS Bridge rather than with the LR import dialogue.  You wipe out the description field which contains "Sony DSC" in Bridge.  Then you synchronize the folder in LR.  Problem solved.  Here are the steps for Windows users.
Step 1:  Create a Custom Template in Bridge.  (a) Go to Tools - Create Metadata Template; (b) In the "Create Metadata Template" dialogue box: (1) under the "IPTC (IIM, legacy)" tab, place a check in the box next to "Description" and leave the field to the right blank (make sure no other boxes are checked); (2) under the "IPTC Core" tab, place a check in the box next to "Description" and leave the field to the right blank; (c) In the "Template Name" field replace "Untitled" with "Clear Sony DSC" (or whatever you want to call your template).
Step 2: Import your photos with the import tool in Bridge (the key is not to import with LR).
Step 3: (a) navigate to the newly imported file of images; (b) in Metadata view click on the top image in the folder and shift click on the last image in the folder to select all; (c) right click on one of the selected images and click on "File info . . .; (d) In the dialogue box that appears, click on the down arrow next to the "Import" button; (e) one of the options should be "Clear Sony DSC" (or whatever you named your template), click on that: (f) an "Import Options" dialogue box will appear, with three choices.  Choose the first of the three "Clear existing properties and replace with template properties."  (Note this will only overwrite "Sony DSC" in the description fields of the metadata and leave those fields blank and will not overwrite any other metadata.); (g) That will return you to the File Information dialogue box. Click the "OK" button at the bottom.  Bridge will now take some time overwriting the description fields in the metadata attached to your images.
Step 4:  Go to LR.  In the Develop module navigate to the folder in which this new folder of images was placed by Bridge.  In the top menu go to Library - Synchronize Folders. Lightroom will now capture this folder of images in your LR catalogue and the attached metadata but thankfully not the troublesome "Sony DSC", so you should be free to edit the caption field in LR.  Do not use "Import Photos from Disk at this seems to recreate the problem and results in duplicate images.
Let me know if this works for you.

Just upgraded to the latest iTunes and iPhoto and now cannot change photos on my iPad, can anyone help please?

Try one or more of the following:
    > Restart Your Computer
    > Uninstall and Reinstall iTunes
    > Reset iPod (nothing will get deleted)
    > Look in My Computer (Windows 98, XP) OR Computer (Windows Vista or 7) and see if your iPod is in there.
In some cases (and this happened to me before) plug your iPod in and out your computer a few times. It should get it going. If not, then I strongly recommend starting your computer.

  • Still cannot change radio caption color by script

    Hello,
I've been trying to follow advice seen in other threads when developers wanted to inactivate radio button choices by script, and also turn the caption grey. What I'm finding is I can deactivate the choice but I just cannot turn the caption grey.
If the exclusion group is named "MyRadioChoice" and the choices are (say) "Choice1", "Choice2", "Choice3" and due to other user input Choice3 becomes inapplicable, then the wisdom is this should work:
    MyRadioChoice.Choice3.access = "readOnly";
    MyRadioChoice.Choice3.caption.font.fill.color = "192,192,192";
The first statement works, the choice can no longer be clicked. But the second does not work, I just can't change the caption color. THe script does not throw any errors, it just plain doesn't work. Can anybody help?

You were right. That problem was driving me crazy. Thank you for the solution.

  • Changing photo caption fonts

I am using the template elegance with photos. I want to change the font of the image captions from italics to regular and change the color to black so the lettering shows up better. Can this be done globally, or do I have to change the captions one at a time?
    Thank you.

oh jim! you are a perfectionist!
here is a quote from sboben who makes templates at http://11mystics.com ! she says:
Jean that's one of the things you can't change yet using the iWeb interface. There are a few of those elements on various pages like that. They can be changed in the template XML, but that's a very technical process that requires messing with core application files.
so, if she finds it difficult jim, then is suggest you make text-boxes yourself! you could also try this link and fiddle with .css files:

  • Script to change photo caption in iWeb to iPhoto comment text

    Hi,
Does any body know, how I could automatic replace the caption of the photos I have imported from iPhoto with the Media Browser to iWeb with the comment text I have in iPhoto for every photo?
It should be just a script, which gets told the album and the looks for the file name which is in the caption, reads the comment for the photo in iPhoto and then puts replaces the caption with it in iWeb, then the next photo ...
    I'm not good in scripting.;-(
    Thanks and Regards,
    JO

Ok, here my script, what I'm using now to copy the comment to the title in iPhoto before importing the photos to iWeb:
    try
    tell application "iPhoto"
    activate
    copy (my selected_images()) to these_images
if these_images is false then ¬
    error "Please select the images."
display dialog "Copy comment to title for the selected photos?"
set the image_count to the count of these_images
display dialog "Processing " & (the image_count as string) & " photos." & return & return & "This will take a moment..." buttons {"•"} default button 1 giving up after 2
repeat with i from 1 to the image_count
    set this_photo to item i of these_images
    tell this_photo
set the title to the comment of this_photo
    end tell
    end repeat
    end tell
    on error error_message number error_number
    tell application "iPhoto"
    activate
if the error_number is not -128 then
display dialog error_message buttons {"OK"} default button 1
    end if
    end tell
    end try
    on selected_images()
    tell application "iPhoto"
    try
    -- get selection
    set these_items to the selection
-- check for single album selected
if the class of item 1 of these_items is album then error
-- return the list of selected photos
    return these_items
    on error
    return false
    end try
    end tell
    end selected_images

  • IMovie11 - I Cannot Change Photo Duration

    This is so frustrating !
I load my photos in iMovie for a slideshow video, and it sets my photos for 8 second duration and won't let me change it. I have tried double clicking on the individual photos and changing it to 3 sseconds, and it accepts it, but when I go back and check, the photo is still 8 seconds.
I have also tried setting it so that all photos have the same duration of 3 seconds, but it doesn't work either. I also went into file > themes and set the default to all at 3 seconds, which it still shows in the setting, but the photos are all still around 8 seconds.
Has anyone else found iMovie to be very unfriendly, unstable, uncontrollable?
Can someone help me figure out why it doesn't respond to commands?

I am not sure what is causing this for you, but in general, I avoid checking anything in transitions or duration that says "Apply To All".
If you go to FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES you can set the default action for when you add a photo. You can set the length and Ken Burns Effect, Crop or Fit. But do not check apply to current. You want it where you can adjust each one individually.
Another thing to be aware of is iMovie/Preferences. Two things here. You want to make sure the Advanced Tools are enabled. And for DISPLAY TIME AS: you have a choice. You can display time as hh:mm:ss:tenths or hh:mm:ss:frames.   If you select frames, you can edit to a finer level of precision. If you are doing all photos and no video, then editing to the nearest tenth is probably OK.
Also, when using transitions, you can select EDIT/TRANSITION OVERLAP/ALL-Maintain Clip Range.
The transition takes frames from the clip before AND THE CLIP AFTER.  You usually want to use ALL whe using video clips. The other option is EDIT/TRANSITION OVERLAP/HALF - Maintain Project Duration. This is OK to use if your project is all photos and no video. You can use it with video, too, but you have to be careful. Let's say you carefully edited out the section of the video clip where your aunt is picking her nose. If you select this option, iMovie has to find frames for the transition, so those frames that you carefully edited out may show up in the transition if they are adjacent to the frames you used.
One more thing... I would try your project with a tranition duration of 1/2 second and see if it performs OK. Then adjust from there.

  • Desktop Software 6.0 - Cannot Change Photo or Video Location - Crash

I have been trying to change the locations used to sync photo and videos to another drive than the one that is pointed to by my windows profile.
The "My Documents" directory is relocated to a network drive by our network policies.  However there is not enough space available on the netowrk share to house video and photos.
I therfore need to point the Photo and Video directories to a local drive.  Each time I click "Change folder" on the Media tab, in Device Options I am presented with a file browse dialog, but when I click "OK" to accept the new location on my local hard drive, the program crashes.

    Hi cap60552:
Have you tried changing the folder from the main screens?  (On the BlackBerry Pictures tab, you can change the folder, bypassing the Device Options.)
Anything else strange about the location you’re choosing?  For some reason, the software isn’t reading the location as a valid path and crashes as a result.
Have you tried different locations on your local drive?
If all else fails, these values are stored in the registry here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Media Sync\Settings  as PictureImportPath and VideoImportPath
    Changing them manually should work.
    Hope that helps....
    Cheers

  • Cannot change caption in offline previews

I want to change the caption in several images.
I CAN CHANGE the captions for those images that reside on my disk.
I CAN CHANGE the captions of preview images for images I have on CDs.
I CANNOT CHANGE the captions of preview images for images I have on CDs when the caption was initially generated in PSE 6.
I CAN CHANGE all other fields of preview images for images I have on CDs when the caption was initially generated in PSE 6.
I am on Windows XP.  The images that I am trying to change are jpegs.
I searched through the forums and have found that people are/were having problems changing this field, but none of those problems seem to be exactly the same as the problems I am having.
So, how do I change this field?  I still have 28 days in the trial period to decide if I want to pay for Lightroom or just stick with PSE 6.  There seem to be a lot of bugs in Lightroom.  Is there a list of bugs anywhere?  Is my problem on that list?
    Ray

Frankly, I doubt if it is something people would expect to do.  If you had save metadata to file automatically set what would you expect to happen?
That said, I would also encourage you to not rely on CDs or DVDs, which have been shown to be pretty unreliable.  Disks are extremely cheap now and makes life much easier.  I keep originals and two backups and am trying to figure out where to keep the second backup out of my house but easy to access.  I tried offline via the internet but have concluded this is not a good solution.

  • Lightroom 5.0 on Windows 7 - Photo Caption problem in Book Module

I had the photo captions in the Meta Data, but have subsequently entered the pertinent photo caption via Custom Text from the left control panel, and also directly into the photo caption print box without success. I have changed the photo size, without a successful outcome, but when I did an auto cell fill of the photo the caption appeared within the photo, but disappeared when sizing was reduced back. I have exhausted all help avenues at this stage.

Thanks for your input and efforts to assist. I have resisted removing and replacing, as the 1966 passport photo has a lengthy (approx 60) adjustments showing in the history, as a result of its age. Hence I think that I will just have tolerate these somewhat minor, I suppose, aberrations and just send it off to Blurb as is, as restoring so many old photos to a more presentable print status has taken me 3 months as it is.
I don't understand why this a problem. You are removing a page from the book and adding back again. You are not removing the photo from the catalog, therefore you would not loose you are adjustments. Books are just another way of rendering photos.

I used to be able to email photos from my Lightroom software 5.7 for MAC quite successfully. I needed to change my password several days ago in my gmail account. Now when I try to email photos I receive a message saying "Failed to establish connection with the outgoing email server. Please make sure you have entered the email account and password correctly."
I have been trying to get help from Adobe for 3 days. I have sent a message through "Get Support", 2 days ago, but no one has contacted me. I have tried by phone, but no one will help me. When I purchased Lightroom in May, 2014, I was able to receive phone help. I am now told that I don't qualify because I am not a Creative Cloud customer.   I have been assigned a case number  186291729.
PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS PROBLEM

I, too, have this problem. I see no one is responding with a solution? Hello? Can someone please advise?
Oh, and, yes, I have manually verified repeatedly that the information I gave to Lightroom is correct, and I still get the same error message when I try to validate.

hello everyone. I have recently installed a Samsung SSD (solid state hard drive) into my destop PC. For some reason Lightroom does not see it ? So i cannot ingest photos from it, or copy photos from a card to it. It is not listed as a drive option. LR sees every other drive. My computer sees it fine, so i was able to create a catalogue there. Im running windows 8.1. Any ideas ? I will also add that this drive became corrupt and was repaired by Samsung. Maybe they didn't do a very good job.. ..

Yes pretty much that, but to clarify sorry
    Opened Lightroom.
    Create new catalogue.
This opened the Windows 8 file explorer window and Windows recognises the drive. So I was able to create a catalogue there and save.
I then inserted my memory card into my card reader which LR recognised. I selected it, chose all the photos within and then navigated to the right side of the Lr import dialogue window to locate this problem drive as on this occasion i want the RAW files on the same drive as the lrcat. However all my other drives are listed but not this Samsung SSD.
In addition this Samsung SSD is not listed a drive to import from in the same dialogue window.

  • Cannot change desktop background picture to my own photos

Hi, in desktop & screen saver I cannot change the desktop background image to any of my own (iphoto) pictures, it shows the list of the images and thumbnails but will only change the pic to the 'Apple' ones (nature, plants, black & white, abstract), if I select any of my photos under 'iphoto albums' the desktop image simply turns light blue.

    Hi.
I'm seeing what seems to be the exact same problem you described. Were you able to figure it out and fix it? I don't see a solution posted.
    Thanks.

  • Globally changing selected parts of photo captions

Is there a way to make batch changes to parts of photo captions? Something like "find and change" in word processing software.
For instance, I accidentally had the time setting wrong on my camera so that AM was PM and vice versa. I would like to change the AM to PM without affecting the actual time associated with images. This will be very tedious if I have to do it manually...

    Hi Dave,
Oh, so you have been appending the batch change entries -that explains it.
The "Title" field can be batch changed like any other field, only you have to find and to select a suitable Metadata Preset that contains the "Title" field.
I have changed my presets so often, that I am no longer sure, if one of the standard presets contains this field, but you can easily define your own preset, containing all fields you want to edit.
In the Metadata tab of the Inspector Panel set the "Metadata View" selector to "Edit",
In the "Metadata Views" panel click the cogwheel to add a new view and name it,
From the right column of the panel add the "Title" tag to the  new View (this tag is located in the IPTC -> Status section of the Metadata Fields.
Then use this new preset in the "Batch Change" dialogue.

  • I cannot change the cover photo on a book I am creating??????

I cannot change the cover photo on a book I am Creating????????

Well I did do it right.... I did drag the photo that I wanted to be the cover photo to the cover and it would not stay there.  Other photos drag where you want them.
What I exactly want to do it change the book cover photo.  The program for making a book sorts the photos where it feels they best fit.  How it decided on a cover photo I do NOT know.  I do not get any ERROR messages. I simply cannot find a way to change the book cover photo.
If you are unable to assist someone then do not nail them for not giving enough information.  I was asking for help not to be treated like an idiot.  Your comments were no help.  Whatsoever!!!  J

  • Cannot email photos from lightroom

I cannot email photos from lightroom 5.4.  Is there a limit to how many photos you can email at one time?

Without knowing more details I suspect your problem may be your e-mail server. Many of them limit the message size you can send so if you're sending full size images rather than downsized images you may be exceeding those limits. As a test try to e-mail just one photo of limited size and see if that works. Otherwise, more details on how the program hangs up when you're trying to email those photos may be helpful.
