Cannot connect to certain buddy

ERROR: FAILED TO START VIDEO CHAT BECAUSE “I” DID NOT RESPOND
Hi I am in New Zealand and am unable to connect via iChat AV with my sister (in USA). I can connect to someone in Australia, USA and UK. I am incredibly frustrated as I bought the iSight so I could see my brand new nephew who I have never met.
My system specs are as follows:
* Mac iBook, G3, 900MHz Power PC, 640 MBSD ram
* OSX 10.4.6
* Connecting via WiFi to Linksys Router BEFW11S4 802.11b, Firmware v 1.52.02, it obtains the IP automatically
* Modem connecting via PPPoA
* The D-Link modem tells me that I am running connecting to the internet at 350Kbps (attenuation 31dB) download and 160Kbps (63dB)
I have tried the following approaches to no avail:
Quicktime prefs
Change the connection speed in the quicktime preferences.
a. Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab
b. Set the drop down to your Connection speed download speed or to a max of 1.5 meg
Port change in iChat prefs
Make the port change for iChat to log on to AIM in iChat > Preferences
a. Accounts > Server Settings tab
b. Change it to 443 (FROM 5190) (you have to be logged out of AIM to do it)
c. Go to iChat preferences
d. Click Server Settings.
e. Unlog from iChat.
f. Change port to 5060 (FROM 5190)
g. Log in to iChat and start audio / video chat with your friends.
Update the firmware on your router and modem
Turn on UPNP on your router
a. If you happen to have the Linksys WRK54G turn on UPnP (browser)
b. Copy: 192.168.1.1 and paste it into your browser, like a URL
c. user: admin
d. password: admin
e. click the administration tab and enable UPnP
f. Exit your browser.
Open ports in internal firewall
UDP: 5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
TCP: 5190
Take down internal firewall
Set up port forwarding on Router
Set up port forwarding on the following ports:
a. iChat1, 5060 – 5060, UDP, 192.168.1.100
b. iChat2, 5190 – 5190, both, 192.168.1.100
c. iChat3, 5297 – 5298, both, 192.168.1.100
d. iChat4, 4099 – 4099, both, 192.168.1.100
e. iChat5, 5193 – 5193, both, 192.168.1.100
f. iChat6, 16384-16403, both, 192.168.1.100
g. ichat7. 5678 - 5678, both, 192.168.1.100
h. ichat8. 5353 - 5353, both, 192.168.1.100
DMZ
a. Set up DMZ on Linksys router, 192.168.1.100
b. Set up DMZ on D-Link modem, 10.1.1.3
From what I have read, it sounds like our two routers are having trouble communicating and so I will try and get my sister to do the same as me with regard to port forwarding (I think she has airport extreme or express).
Apart from that I just can’t think of anything else I can do? Can someone offer me any advice?

Hi Supertommonz,
Ok iChat like a LAN with only one DHCP server.
It may be possible to put the Modem in Bridge mode.
see my message about my confusion!
It may be possible to put the Linksys in Access Point
mode (same thing but different point on LAN).
Alternatively you can set the modem to allow Static
addresses and then set the Linksys to have a Static
address to the modem.
From the Linksys to the computers can be DHCP or
Static.
As the Linksys has UPnP use it as ichat also only
likes one event of NAT (Port Forwarding or Port
Triggering or DMZ)
So I should disable my port forwarding?
With the modem in Staic addressing to the Linksys you
could do Port Forwarding or DMZ if you wanted to
catch every port.
If the D-Link can also do UPnP I would use that.
I can't seem to find an option for turning on UPnP on the D-Link modem. On the Linksis router I have just noticed that it has UPnP on/off under Administration, but also UPnP Forwarding under Gaming. Are these two different things or do you need to use both (i.e. is the on/off like a master switch)?

  • Can't Connect To Certain Sites iPod Touch 2nd Gen

    Hello.
I have an iPod Touch 2nd Generation, and I use an Arris modem to connect to the Internet. I do not have a router.
I've recently moved to a new location. I had to switch to a different ISP and modem. The internet has been working completely fine on all of my devices connected to the modem wirelessly except for my iPod Touch.
The best way I can describe the problem is: I cannot connect to certain sites. Due to Apple's complete abandonment of the older iPod Touch generations, I don't use it for anything but Facebook for when I am home and don't want to be sitting at the computer. That being said, there are only 3 sites I can report not working. Google, YouTube and Facebook all don't work for me. However, I have on rare occasion actually been able to connect to Google even though I haven't changed any settings. I can confirm that Reddit and Yahoo do work. I haven't tried other sites. The message I get when I try to connect to these sites is, "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."
The steps I have taken so far (that I can remember) in hopes of fixing this problem are listed below:
Restored my iPod via iTunes to factory settings.
Restored my iPod to previously backed up data.
Reset network settings in iPod settings.
Disconnected and reconnected to modem wireless signal.
Turned off iPod and held down Home and Power button for 10 seconds or so.
Downloaded Facebook Messenger app to attempt to log in that way (did not work).
    Reset modem.
    Probably some other things too.
I would appreciate any help you fine folks over here could provide as I have no other options to turn to.
    Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately, I have no other available networks to test it on. I can say that it was working before I moved. I can connect to the sites completely fine on all other devices connected to the same network. Unless there is some setting on the modem that specifically stops only my iPod Touch I figured it was something on the iPod causing the problem.

  • Two Issues: Cannot connect to wireless networks; Cannot load certain sites

    Hey everybody,
    I have a MacBook Pro 15".
In just the past week, I've stumbled upon two sudden problems with my network/internet connectivity.
First, I can no longer connect to wireless networks, be it an infrastructure point or computer-to-computer ad-hoc networks. I'm not really sure why. I installed the latest AirPort Update (4.2.3, according to System Profiler). I also recently installed both iStumbler and KisMac v.21. When I started having issues, I thought that maybe one of these two programs might be the culprit, so I uninstalled both of them but I still have the same problem.
Second, I've had issues with not being able to connect to certain websites. I use both Safari and BonEcho as my browsers. The specific sites seem random:
    www.weffriddles.com
    www.macrumors.com
    images.google.com
    sports.yahoo.com
    finance.yahoo.com
    to list a few.
If you need any diagnostic information, please let me know.
Thanks in advance for any advice/help you can provide!
    Tommy H.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   browsers: Safari, BonEcho/ Airport Driver Version: 4.2.3

If you are trying to connect to a third-party router using WPA or WEP, there is a good chance that your Airport card was broken by Apple's 2007-02 Airport Update. There is no fix, and for many of us, our Macbooks and Macbook Pros are useless for wireless connections until Apple fixes the issue. At this point, Apple seems to be denying that there even is an issue, so we may all be in for a long wait indeed.

  • Cannot connect with buddy

I've had no issues with ichatting lately until i tried a new buddy today. when i double click on the green video icon on buddy list ichat tells me that it is waiting for a connection with my buddy but then a message appears that says "Failed to start video chat because:ryan cavanagh did not respond" - why would this happen as I am ryan cavanagh and I was the one trying to ichat? Even when my buddy sends me an invitation and i accept it it tells her that she did not respond??????
    can anyone help?
    Cheers
    ryan
    G5

    Hi Ryan and Tyler,
iChat has two main messages "Insufficient Bandwidth" and "User Did not Respond"
The one you have can come up if the connection seems to take too long.
As it is a new Buddy it could be that they have not got their end set up properly.
Do you know if they are using their MAc firewall and have the iChat ports set up in it ?
Or if they have set the ports in their modem ?

  • Cannot connect to the app store

    Hi all,
My girlfriend has a macbook air, and wanted to update her computer to Lion. I had no problem doing that on my own macbook pro, but I can't do it on hers. She didn't update her softwares regularly, so at first I found myself having to update a ton softwares so I could finally install the Mac App Store. Once it finished installing though I was never able to actually use it, as when I open the application it just says: "Cannot Connect to the App Store". I looked up online and people had similar problems, and none of the suggested solutions worked:
    - Starting up the computer in "Safe Mode" did not work;
    - Repairing all the permissions in the Disk Utility application did not work;
    - Signing out and in the Mac App Store from the App Store application did not work;
    - The problem is certainly not the internet connection because I was able to update my computer in the same connection, and I can regularly access it on my computer.
Does anyone have a tip to solve this problem?
Thank you very very much in advance!

Thanks cpickrell but no, she is not using any firewall or antivirus program. Any other idea?

  • "Cannot connect to the iTunes Store" when using WiFi and Cisco VPN

    hi
I'm on iPhone software 2.0 and have a connection to the internet via WiFi and VPN (using the integrated Cisco client). Everything works fine (Safari, Mail, mobileme push of contacts and calendars) but the iTunes Store and the App Store won't. While the App Store keeps spinning the iTunes Store says "Cannot connect to the iTunes Store". Has anyone else experienced a similar phenomenon?
    thanks
    Message was edited by: samaki

We're having the same issue. App Store and iTunes do not work when all traffic is tunneled over VPN. Yet, other applications like Safari, New York Times reader, Telnet, etc... work perfectly fine over VPN. If we have the iPhone switch over to using split tunneling VPN mode, then the App Store and iTunes work since they do not appear to be sending traffic over the VPN tunnel. I can say for certain that no outgoing traffic is being blocked on the VPN servers since I administer those servers. I also did a packet capture on the iPhone wireless session and it appears that the App Store sends traffic over the regular HTTP port. So it really doesn't make any sense from a VPN perspective why Safari would work but not the App Store or iTunes when you're tunneling all traffic over VPN. Our iPhones are using the latest firmware (5F136). If anyone has any update, please do share.

  • Cannot connect to home wi-fi. temporarily connects then disconnects ?

My Droid-X cannot connect to my wi-fi home router. using WPA2-PSK. Phone sees network but will not connect ?
At one point is connected for a few seconds only ?

We certainly want you to be connected at home amc129!
Lets take a look at this! Have you been able to connect previously to the WPA2-PSK setting? Can you connect with other WiFi networks like normal? If so, I recommend contacting the router provider, as a software update or settings change may be necessary. Please keep me posted!

  • TS1368 I cannot connect to iTunes store using iTunes. 'Secure link to iTunes store failed'. Please help!

I cannot connect to iTunes store using iTunes. I have version 11.0.2.26 on Win 7 pc. I have had no problems until recently. Can't say exactly the problem began as I don't normally use my computer to access the store but my last successful access according to iTunes diagnostics was 28th Feb 2013 (if thats useful?!)
I've run the Network Connectivity Test in iTunes diagnostics and I got the following results:
    - Network interfaces verified.
    -Internet connection verified.
    -Secure link to iTunes failed.
When I click the help button next to the 'Secure link to iTunes failed' message I get the following:
''iTunes Help is unavailable because your computer isn't connected to the internet.'
My pc is connected to the internet. I've checked firewalls. Windows firewall is off. I'm running AVG internet security 2013. Iv've checked the firewall settings on that and iTunes is not being blocked.
Getting kinda frustrated. Can anybody help please???

I seem to have tracked down the problem. AVG Family Safety software was causing the issue somehow. I have uninstalled it and iTunes now working. I will contact AVG for a solution as I now have no way of blocking certain sites.

  • Safari won't connect to certain webpages

    Welp,
on my G5, in the past few weeks, Safari won't connect with only certain internet pages, like ebay, qvc, and my school webpage. Called Apple help and the man said there was a third party thingie in the way. Dumped preferences, then re-installed the harddrive (with archives) and still the same problem. Type the address, wait more than a minute, then the Safari cannot connect page comes up. I've sent about nine of these to report bugs but have heard nothing back. I'm computer illiterate and will appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks
    G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

First off, this is the eMac group. Your system info says "G5". So are you in the correct group (all eMacs are G4 machines).
Have you tried those same pages with other browsers? FireFox and Camino are two that are popular and free downloads. So first thing to do is try those out as well and see how the pages come up. If they come up in Firefox or Camino, then I would agree that your problem is with Safari.
If, however, they don't come up there, then your problem is elsewhere. Likely places to check are Firewall setting in software or in any router you might be using. I have found certain "secure" or other log in type sites sometimes have troubles with certain Firewall settings on my DSL router. You may have the same issue and are looking in the wrong place for your solution.

  • Cannot connect to YouTube on iPad 2

After upgrading to iOS 5, my iPad 2 seemed fine, but the next day I suddenly got "cannot connect to YouTube" when using the YouTube app.
Other iOS devices on the same wifi LAN connected fine. The iPad had been fine for a day after upgrading.
I looked at all the (many) threads with the same problem, I followed all the suggested fixes, nothing worked.
Enabling restrictions, disabling the YouTube app so that the icon vanished allowed Safari on the iPad to connect to the YouTube sites, but most of these require Flash and we all know the story there...
I fixed the problem by backing up the iPad 2, doing a complete restore to factory settings and then a restore from that backup, all from iTunes on the Mac. Problem solved, YouTube app working again.

Are you trying to connect over WiFi? Or cellular? Does this happen on all networks or just certain ones?
And, just for my edification, what is "Twitch"?

  • Cannot connect to internet using apple applications

    Hi,
I cannot connect to the internet using these apple applications: Safari, Software Update, iTunes.
I can connect to the internet using Firefox and iChat.
I have just reinserted my OSX 10.4 discs and reinstalled the software (making an archive and using my old settings choice). But it still doesn't work.
Why won't apple applications connect to the internet?

    Lisa W wrote:
I just updated to 10.4.11 and tried to run my brand new Safari 3. NO GO.
I'm having a much smaller problem (just accessing certain sites) which I think may have begun with 10.4.11. I'd agree that you might want to try launching the disk utility and repairing permissions. Then you may want to run Software Update again and see if it finds other updates that may be required. Sometimes after a revision patch application, especially if you don't apply patches soon after their release, there are other applications and stuff which need to be updated after you've run the initial update. It's not a typical thing, but it does happen on occasion.
The only time I've really had a problem with an update was, I believe, 10.4.9... I think I let Software Update do it's job, but wasn't ready to save and quit an open document or two, so just did something I'd done before, without issue... I "force-quit" Software Update. This was not an advisable move, as it turned out. Indeed, I think that time, after staying up all night trying to suss out the problem, was when I found a couple other people who'd had similar issues with the update because it required a second re-start after patch application. In my sleep-deprivation-induced state of temporary insanity I selected a user name which I now find rather embarrassing... I don't remember picking "MacCrackHead", actually... LOL ... but that's another story.
If you have an external drive that you've backed up your system install to, you may be able to boot off of it and see if things work normally (as I did when I moved from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 and had the issues)... Ultimately I ended up making a second back-up of my external back-up and running the 10.4.9 update offline. It went well, so I cloned my back-up back to my normal start-up. I can't remember now what the issue was then, but it was pretty problematic for me.
My routine, when I see an important update available is now:
    1) Don't update when Software Update finds something;
    2) Save my work and close all applications.
    3) (Recommended): Bring my back-up clone of my start-up drive up-to-date.
    4) Run software update.
    5) Restart when it tells me to (required for many updates, and all system version updates)
    6) Run software update again on re-boot to see if there's anything else that follows... (usually none)
    7) Run disk utility and repair permissions.
Good luck resolving your issue, Lisa.
    Lowell
