Cannot connect to wifi unless 5 bars on windows 8.1

Question

     First off, apologies if this is the wrong place for this thread, but I am feeling a bit burnt-out and need advice from people that know what they are doing. I recently purchested a Lenovo Y40 with windows 8.1, and overall have been relatively happy with it up until recently, when my computer unconected from the wifi and wouldn't reconnect. It  registers as a three bar connection, but whenever I attempt to rejoin it gets to checking network requirements before saying "Can't connect to this network".
     I thought it might be just a temperary thing, but its been around a week and I still can't connect unless I am within the room with the router. If I connect to the network near the router and then take it back upstairs, I can access webpages for a little, but it will always disconnect again and won't let me reconnect. I am able to get access anywhere with my old laptop, so it isn't a router thing. I am wondering if there is a setting in windows 8.1 that may cause/fix this, or perhaps something else? Do whatever you need to do to connect to the network. Now go to the control panel and start up the network and sharing center. Click on your connection. In the window that pops up select  Wireless Properties now check the top box and then click apply then OK and reboot your computer.
Test out your connection. That should do the trick.
