Cannot get sound to work on my notebook

My HP Pavilion dv6-6c02tu sound icon on the taskbar now has a red cross next to it and I have no sound.
These are the steps I have tried so far to resolve the issue.
- Clicked on the sound icon on taskbar. My computer checked the audio driver and tried to resolve the problem, however was unable to do so.
- Opened device manager and located the sound devices; these are 'Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus' and 'IDT High Definition Audio Codec'. I right clicked on both of these and tried to updated the drivers from web, however no updates were available.
- Tried downloading the driver from the HP website. During installation it came up with the error "The hardware detected is not supported by this IDT software package". The installation was then aborted.
- Tried unistalling the drivers from the Device Manager, then reinstalling the HP driver, however same problem as above.
- Tried uninstalling IDT Audio from Control Panel/Programs, however again, same problem.
- Updated chipset drivers
- Checked I have the most current BIOS, which I do.
- Installed the latest HP Support Assistant, which did not locate any required updates.
Please help!!!

Don't use ESD and PulseAudio, the only thing they make are problems.
Do you have a ~/.asoundrc or a /etc/asound.conf? If yes, try to delete them.

  • New quad G5 - cannot get sound to work

I have a new quad G5 and cannot get the sound to work. Does it require external speakers or is it defective?
The Apple rep didn't tell me I would need to purchase speakers and every other mac tower I have owned has had an internal speaker.
    Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Rebecca
    g5 quad   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yeah, there needs to be an option for 'Internal Speakers' port 'Built-in Output' in order to use the internal speakers.
I can't remember if this is available on my quad [am at work now on an imac ... any way to check what the options are from the command line? ].
If it is not present, you should probably contact apple support.

  • Cannot get sound to work kt3 ultra 2c

Hello- I reformatted and installed windows 98 on a friends comp with an ultra 2c ms 6593-it has ac97 sound.  I installed the latest vid drivers for his card and dx9..and then i tried to install the sound drivers from the cd and for some reason the cd doesn't go through an auto set up. i can't even install the sound drivers manually. I went into the bios and it said ac97 was enabled. But there is nothing in windows that shows any sound.the computers sound worked before he crashed it and i reinstalled..i was running out of time so i couldnt look into it further.. is it possible that installing dx9 before the sound drivers could have screwed something up?.. or was something in the bios changed that i am not aware of. He crashed the comp when he tried to put in a modem that might not have been compatable..and i may have changed something when I went into the bios to try and get into safe mode to retrieve some files..
ac97 says 'enabled' in bios but i can't remember if it was highlighted-(changeable)
anyway- im not that experienced in this stuff..any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
    THARN
this system also hangs on startup-doesnt get past 3 grn lights on the back bracket- it starts though if reset is pushed..that doesnt seem good to me.
the system specs as far as i know are:
    msi kt3 ultra 2c(via 333) athlon 1800
    win98/265 mb  ac97 onboard sound
    nvidiage2-64mb card

    Thanks-Hansh
I'm thinking the same thing but the problem is-it's not my computer and my friend said he doesnt want me to re format and redo everything-but there may be no other choice..deep down i think it has everything to do with installing directx9 before the sound drivers...(my mistake -doh)..im going over there today to try everything short of reformat.. ive been reading this entire site and appreciate evryones input from past posts...helps mediocre' compgeeks like me.
    THARN
btw- win 98 was installed- heres the story. win 98 was installed- sound was working vid was working. I transplanted his old modem from his other comp and the connection was slow-was an old v90 and probably not in good shape anyway. so we ordered a new modem and it had an intel chip-(when the drivers were installed-fatal exception to the 100th degree..)so i reformatted and reinstalled everything for him.got a new modem that said amd copatible-everything works except sound..prolly because of the order i put in drivers..gonna see soon enough.

  • Cannot get Sound to work in Wine

    Hello together,
I am having a problem with my otherwise perfectly well running Arch installation.
Whatever I try, I seem unable to get the sound to work in wine. There is sound in games
and when I click "test sound" in the audio tab in winecfg, but it is crackled and seems to play much to fast.
Also, when clicking "test sound" in the audio tab in winecfg, the following error message appears:
err:ole:CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from multi-threaded to apartment threaded
My winearch is set to 32 bit (but the same problem occurs if set to 64 bit) and I use pulseaudio
as the sound server. The sound in all native applications works just fine. Also, I have pulseaudio-alsa
installed and in winecfg, winealsa is correctly listed as sound driver.
I already tried several sloutions (and checked if I have the right libraries and lib32- installed), like:
    - setting tsched=0 (or to 1, both did change nothing) in /etc/pulse/default.pa
    - set default-sample-rate=48000 or default-fragment-size-msec=5 in /etc/pulse/deamon.conf
These were solutions which helped other users, but sadly did not fix my problem.
Can you think of anything else I could try?
    Thanks in advance!
    hermi

Thank you for your comments, but it was my fault completely...
The default-fragment-size-msec=5 did work in the end, I just did not delete the ";" at the beginning of the line.
    What a stupid mistake...
Well, for other people as a hint: It you change something in /etc/pulse/deamon.conf, always remove die semicolon at the beginning of the line.
How can I mark this topic as solved?
    Best regards,
    hermi

  • Cannot get sound to work on Mac Book Pro.

MaBook Pro. OS X.  Version: 10.6.8 Sound won't work. I have gone to system preferences and checked "sound"--that seems to be fine.

There may be a resolution through use of the System Management Controller (SMC)
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
If the use of a headphone and the audio jack in the computer does not gain access to
sound output, (indicating other issue, if it does) then the SMC may help reset the Mac
since the issue may be software, hardware, or both to a minor degree.
And if those don't work you may have to contact an Apple authorized service provider
for testing, diagnostic, and/or repair purposes. If you manage to set a Genius appoint-
ment at an Apple Store, they may be able to perform diagnostics on this issue.
•OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM  - works w/ other Mac OS X versions.
Hopefully the reset SMC - or perhaps reset PRAM - may help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I cannot get sound on facetime on my iphone.

I cannot get sound to work on facetime on my iphone 4,. I can hear but people I talk to can't hear me. Can someone tell me how to get it to work?

  • HT201210 my iphone 4 when up graded to ios 6, i cannot get sounds?

just upgraded my iphone 4 to ios 6, great looking, but cannot get sounds to work when paging or using key boards, any ideas

That's how iTunes Match runs on iOS 6. You can no longer delete iTunes Match songs off the device with iTunes Match enable. You can do the following to remove songs.
    1) Turn iTunes Match off and you can then delete song single songs that way.
2 Go to: Settings -> General -> Usage -> Select Music -> and swipe delete to get rid of everything
    3) Turn iTunes Match off and then on again to delete everything
    4) I heard you can delete iTunes music off the device in iTunes but I cannot accomplish that task. Plus it defeats the purpose of "cutting the cord"
    This revised way *****...
Go to http://www.apple.com/feedback and go to the iTunes icon. Leave them feedback and suggest it goes back to the old way.

  • Cannot get sound through my surround sound tv - only pictures - sound works fine through tv speakers - why is this?

Apple TV is working for pictures and sound via my television speakers but I cannot get sound via my surround sound speakers with HDMI or an Optical Lead.
Anyone care to advise me what I may have done wrong in the connections?

If you have connected your TV by HDMI via your receiver and you get sound from your TV but not your receiver then the problem must lie within your receiver or its settings. Check the manual to ensure you have selected the correct settings for it.

Well, it's a laptop, so they're build in. But to be sure I tested in Win8 (it's a dualboot) and there it works.

  • I cannot get sound from the web, you tube, etc, however, my speakers are on, my itunes play sound?

I cannot get sound from the web, you tube, etc, however, my speakers are on and my itunes play sound? What gives?

    Hi,
    Try the following.
First, download the Flash uninstall utility on the link below and save it to your Desktop.
    Flash Player Uninstaller.
When the download has completed, close all browser windows and run the uninstaller.  After this has completed, restart the notebook.
Next, download and install Firefox and then using Firefox, download and install the latest version of Adobe Flash.
Close all browser windows before running the Flash installer.
Launch Firefox and see if Youtube videos etc play Ok - if they do, close Firefox, open IE and click on the same Adobe Flash link above to get a prompt to install the ActiveX component.  When done, restart IE.

  • TS1631 I cannot get sound on downloaded apps?

I cannot get sound on downloaded apps.  I do get sound from music download..

    Hello Michelle,
I would be concerned too if the speaker on my iPhone was not working.  I found an article with some steps to take when you are experiencing issues like this.
I recommend reviewing the full article, but step 2 specifically stood out to me for the issue you are experiencing:
    2. Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is not switched to silent.
iPhone: Can't hear through the receiver or speaker

  • TS1702 I cannot get facebook to work on my ipad, anyone else having this problem?

I cannot get facebook to work on my ipad, anyone else having this problem?

Try a reset ( Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until Apple logo appears). Worked on my phone for other sounds like text and mail being extremely low. Might work for you and is quick and easy and you wont loose any of your data. Good luck!

  • Since installing iOS 8.0 I cannot get Netflix to work, other web browsing is ok

I Cannot get Netflix to work since I installed iOS 8 my wife's iPad not yet upgraded and works ok on same wifi connection

I have what sounds like a very similar issue.
I had my Denon 3312ci working perfectly with Airplay from my 2013 iMac running iTunes. Upgraded to iTunes 11.1.3, and now when I attempt to Airplay direct from iTunes to the 3312, it plays for about half a second and then stops. Displayed on the Amp then says "Assigning Network". The amp starts dropping ping packets at this point. About 15-20 seconds later the pings start coming back, but no Airplay.
I tried different network cables, resetting the microprocessor, a different switch, changing between DHCP and static IP. Was about to make a warranty call to Denon, when I thought maybe I should try Airplaying directly from iphone and ipad. Much to my surprise, it worked from those devices.
I prefer to use my iMac to Airplay rather than ipad/iphone as I found I got next to no audio drop outs using it that way (they are both using wired network), where as ipad/iphone occasionally would get a moment of silence in the middle of a song.
My network set up is fine. I can use internet radio and connect to DLNA services fine on the amp. It is just airplay between iTunes 11.1.3 and the amp where the issue lies.
No fixes as yet, but I have logged a support call with Denon Australia to see what they say.
