Cannot install iTunes 10.5 on 10.7.2: need to close Xcode?!?!?!?!

When I try to install iTunes 10.5, either from a package download or Software Update, part way thorough the process I get an alert:
    Installation Alert
In order to continue installation, please close the following applications:
           Xcode
I cannot imagine any dependency of iTunes on Xcode, but, OK, I'll be glad to quit Xcode... but it is NOT running.   Not visible in the dock, and not in the All Processes display of Activity Monitor -- nor do I see anything obviously connected to Xcode running there.
I quit iTunes before trying to install 10.5, and I don't see it or anything obviously connected (like "iTunes Helper") running in Activity Monitor, either.
Launching and quitting Xcode has no effect.   The only option offered by the Alert is "Quit Installer", so I presume the process behind it is actively monitoring the task list.
My best guess is that the installer is saying "close Xcode" but somehow means some other app.  Next time I restart I guess I could try to install with almost no apps running -- after undoing 10.7's cool restore mechanism.
I've tried to install multiple times since 10.5 first became available ... same outcome each time.
Any ideas ?

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

It will work with Windows 7 32 bit.  On a 64 bit you will have to install Windows XP Mode.  You can download it from the Microsoft Website.  The XP Mode will run Windows XP in 32 bit.  Microsoft has easy instructions on the download.  One download at a time.  Install the first download then the second download.  You will have to copy your icon from all program and paste to the desktop if you are going to use it often.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • I cannot install iTunes updates as of today.  Does anyone have any idea what changed with iTunes?

The question apparently needs to be typed in twice...  good work.  Here it is again:
I cannot install iTunes updates as of today.  Does anyone have any idea what changed with iTunes?

Is this a distinct issue from the 42404?
If so, are you getting an error message when you try to install iTunes? If so, what does it say? (Precise text, please.)

  • I cannot install itunes on windows 8.1

I cannot install itunes on my Toshiba Laptop with windows 8.1. I kept getting error 7. So i removed all of the itunes files from my computer, and did everything the install troubleshooting page suggested, but it still will not install, but now instead of error 7, I am getting error 2.

If the above steps haven't helped try installing:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for a 32-bit core program, similar to previous 64-bit releases of iTunes.
    Or roll back to:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)
    as appropriate.

  • I cannot install iTunes on my computer, Winows 7. Error code -45075

I cannot install iTunes on my computer. Error code -45075

I used to have the same problem, and found a solution. It is very simple, ,just follow these steps below
Open the 'computer' file, found on start or might be on your desktop.
Click the C: drive, found on the left where theres a list of things such as favorites, desktop, etc
    Locate 'Users' and open it.
    Click your username
Go to AppData. (if its not there: on top, where theres 'File | Home | Share | View', click view, and then on the Show/Hide column, place a check by Hidden Items)
    Click 'Local'
    Locate Temp, and click it.
Highlight all the files and delete them. There might be some that you cant delete, but thats fine, just click 'skip'
Restart your computer, and it will be fixed!
    Hope I helped

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
