Cannot manage files or folders both ways on network

I have recently added a intel iMac to my network and I am having trouble managing files in both directions. From my of mac mini I can delete move add etc files on the intel iMac but I cannot do it the other way around. I have identical settings on both units can anyone suggest what is wrong. When I try and delete a file on the mac mini I am told i do not have sufficient privileges but as I am the administrator do not know what else I need.
Thanks
Peter

Sorry, I kind of glossed over these possible strategies, but it was somewhat intentional - AFP problems are gaining notoriety for being tough to troubleshoot and where the problem is poorly defined, a lot of time can be spent pursuing dead ends so I thought I would just mention them, while cutting to the chase and saying that reinstallation has eliminated the problem for many users. By being careful to choose the appropriate options, user's files need not be affected (provided nothing goes wrong). Unfortunately, while reinstalling may work, it does nothing to shed light on the underlying problem so that it can be properly isolated, reported, and ultimately fixed. But it isn't clear whether the problems Intel users are experiencing are due to something misconfigured, or if there is actually something wrong with the installation.
But anyway, re: creating new users, I was thinking in terms of creating a new user (via "System Preferences" > "Accounts") on the Intel Mac. Trying "admin" vs "non-admin" might also make a difference.
Resetting the "NetInfo" database might be considered an "advanced" method. On a fresh machine, there should be very little impact although user accounts will have to be recreated (their data should not be affected). On an established machine, various customizations (groups, sharepoints, users installed by applications, etc.) may be lost. When recreating users, make sure to use the same short name that they originally had. If they can be created in the same order that they were originally, even better. There are instructions here for resetting "NetInfo", but it doesn't cover recreating users:

The so called "combo" updaters are more complete installer packages that replace or update more files than an incremental / "delta" updater, and allow minor intermediate updates to be skipped - eg. you could go directly from 10.4.4 listed in your profile, to the most recent 10.4.8 using the 10.4.8 "Combo" updater. If there is a reason why you need to stick with 10.4.4, the 10.4.4 "Combo" updater could be applied. Since the "combo" updaters are more thorough, they often end up replacing bad files that might be missed by an incremental update. They can be downloaded from Apple - be sure to choose an appropriate version (OS X version, client vs server, Intel vs PPC)

  • Cannot move files into folders on desktop

Hi, I cannot move files into folders on desktop.  They won't go in when I grab them and drag them to a folder.

Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or restarting the computer. Try that first, if you haven't already done it. Otherwise, continue.
Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folder  or something else, such as Anything.
If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
Back up all data before continuing.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign ($). Quit Terminal.
    Relaunch the Finder.
If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, continue.
Quit iPhoto if it's running. Launch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop folder.)

  • Cannot see file and folders copied from other windows 8

    Hi everyone,
    The problem is the next:
I have new PC for that i was asked to setup and install software, i perform on it clean windows 8 install, it have single HDD 1TB that was partitioned by regular windows setup option to system drive C: 100GB and all left space was partitioned as drive D:
After setup finish i only boot to system to check that everything is OK and without to make ANY change to windows shut it down.
I physically disconnect HDD from new PC and connect it via standard USB 3 docking device to my own PC that also run windows 8 i can see the new connected HDD with all partitions without any problem! Than i create on second partition on new drive folder and
copy there some files, after copy finished i disconnect the drive in safe way by performing "eject" option in windows.
i connect new drive back to new pc, boot to windows and access the second partition and it ... empty, no folder or files on drive, it also show like no space was used !!!
MOST IMPORTANT ! - Why it don't looks like security or permission or even hardware problem - NO any major security changes was performed on my own (old) PC, but most important fact when i connect other hdd to same dock station and create folder and copy some
files and then connect it to NEW PC - problem does not exist !!! i can see and access without any problem the folder and files on both PC's !
    I also tried:
to reinstall windows on new pc
to create or delete partition after setup in both PC's
to check folder and drive permissions and adding "everyone" with "full control"
to turn on "show hidden files and folders" and "system files" too
to copy or create new different type files
Interesting - if i create a folder in NEW PC i can see this folder on OLD PC and copy files to it, but whet i connect drive back to NEW PC it sometimes show the folder have those files and even use the appropriate space and programs even try to open those files
without any security warnings but it cannot be open properly because files looks corrupted !
    Thanks for any help !

    Hi,
According to your description, I don't think this is system problem. More like HDD or its interface problem.
Have you tried to reconnect your new HDD to your own computer again after you copy some file to it but couldn't find anything on new computer. If there is problem in new PC, how about your own PC?
Please have a try, If there was any progress, feel free let us know.

  • Snow Leopard cannot read Files or Folders with Accents written by Windows 7

I upgraded to snow leopard on launch date in the process of ripping all my music to ALAC in OSX.
I brought it over to windows to encode it in the batch encoder in DV poweramp using Windows 7 RC1.
When I tried to copy the files back to OSX it could not read any files or folders with an accent in their name if they were written by windows. It thought the folders were aliases and kept trying to figure out what was wrong and mp3s it just continually tried to load.
It cannot read them on both FAT32 and NTFS partitions however plugging the FAT32 drive in a Vista computer it was perfectly able to read the files. Any ideas why this might be? I may try writing a file with an accent in the name via Vista later.

Whats odd, accents aren't giving me a problem but a little square unicode character is.
    http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/25a0/index.htm
That is sorta what it looks like, maybe a bit smaller, windows can't open folders with that in it.
Mac chokes on your a accents e and all other varieties.

  • Cannot compress files or folders

On a MB Pro with Leopard 10.5.8 I cannot compress files:
either the command "compress" (or similiar, I don't use a english OS) in the menu is grey or the command does not show up in the context menu. On another MB Pro also with 10.5.8 this works as expected.

In the folder /System/Library/CoreServices do you have a program called "Archive Utility" (or "Archive Utility.app")? That's the program that should handle a "compress" operation.
I looked in three "Contextual Menu Items" folders on my computer and didn't find anything for archive operations, so that particular menu item may be built into the OS.

  • Cannot save files into folders or attach files in folders since installing Maverics

Since installing Mavericks, I have been having trouble saving files (notably, Mail attachments) into the folder I want and also opening files in folders.
What I see, when I try to save a file into a folder that is one of several inside another folder, is a list of the folder names, in an unfamiliar format, with the contents of each folder also shown. (Makes for VERY slow scrolling.)
I cannot select a folder into which to save as the file. (I can, usually, save it into the outer folder and then move it afterwards or save it onto the desktop or into the downloads folder and then move it.)
Also, when I attempt to attach a file to a Mail message, I again run into difficulties. Sometimes I cannot select a file in a folder. (It will let me select the whole folder.) Sometimes it is ok if I move the file to the desktop first. Just now, with the screenshot above, I saved it onto the desktop but could not select it to upload it until I moved it into a folder.
    What's up?
(BTW, so far, this is happening only on my min, not on my MacBook.)

  • BB Desktop manager - sync not working both ways on new Tour

Events from BB will sync with Mac but if I put an event in iCal it will not sync with the BB.
Message: A SYNC ERROR OCCURRED. PLEASE RETRY SYNC during calendar sync
    Contacts will sync both ways
    Computer: MACBOOK PRO
    MAC OS X: VERSION 10.6.4
    BB Smartphone Tour 9630
    v5.0.0.624
Desktop Manager software v1.0.4 (build 10) Currently says I am updated.
Worked the first time, when desktop override smartphone selected and appeared to worked for a couple of days then I started getting this error.  I did initially check out all the syncing, with trial contacts and events and had no problems for those first few days.
I tried to FORGET DEVICE.  Worked the first time, again when desktop override, but then stops working again and get same error message.
Only change was that I added another email account to the phone (mobile me account).
The main reason I went with BB over the other phones from my provider was to sync my calendars and contacts and now it is not working and I have only had the phone a week. So frustrated.
    Thanks,

    Hey raspes,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
When you're stating the BlackBerry Desktop Software is not able to find the calendar, do you mean it is not listed in the list of Calendars in BlackBerry Desktop manager?
Have you tried forgetting the device and then re-attempting the synchronization?
    Go into Device>Forget Device.
Once completed close BlackBerry Desktop Manager and re-open and it will ask you to re-setup the synchronization and all calendars should be listed now.

  • Cannot add files or folders to itunes

Since updating to itunes 8.1.1 I have not been able to add music files or folders to itunes. The files play outside of itunes and are in MP3 format. The same files have been added to itunes in the past with no problems, but now itunes says all of my music folders are empty even though they are not. Please advise.....

germanbl, look at this older thread for Vaio owners.

j.bates, did you upgrade from itunes 6 or 7? iTunes has recently gotten very picky about ID3 headers.
Here is a good web article on it, and a possible fix. Take note, the fix may take your ID3 tags back to version 1.0 so try it on ONE song file before deciding whether it's worth using.

  • Using Applescript and Automator to manage files and folders

    Hi all.
I need to make a simple action via applescript and-or automator to take the file it's been applied to (via the services) create a folder around it with the same name as the file.
So far, I've searched the web, found some solutions but none are really working.
    Here's the script I found :
    set myFolder to findFolder()
tell application "Finder" to set myFiles to files of myFolder as alias list
    repeat with aFile in myFiles
      set bName to my baseName(aFile)
      tell application "Finder"
set folderExists to exists folder bName of myFolder
      if not folderExists then make new folder at myFolder with properties {name:bName}
move aFile to folder bName of myFolder
      end tell
    end repeat
    ---------------- HANDLERS ----------------
    on baseName(myFile)
tell application "System Events" to set {fileName, fileExt} to {name, name extension} of myFile
return text 1 thru ((get offset of "." & fileExt in fileName) - 1) of fileName
    end baseName
    on findFolder()
      activate application "SystemUIServer"
-- Bug pointed out by Lauri Ranta http://www.openradar.me/9406282
      tell application "Finder"
      activate
      set mySelection to (get selection)
      if mySelection ≠ {} then
set mySelection to first item of (get selection)
if mySelection's class = folder then
      set currentFolder to mySelection
else if mySelection's class = document file then
set currentFolder to parent of mySelection
else if mySelection's class = alias file then
set currentFolder to original item of mySelection
      end if
      else
set currentFolder to target of front Finder window
      end if
      end tell
      return (currentFolder as alias)
    end findFolder
And here's a page where they explain how to use automator and the Services to do what I <allmost> want, with some adaptation.
    But it still doesn't work.
    http://hbase.net/2011/08/17/move-selected-files-into-a-new-folder-using-applescr ipt-and-automator/
So if anybody has an idea n how I could do this ?
It It could either be a folder action (I drag and drop the files into a folder and boom, they get their folder around them)that I would set on a folder on a network drive, or locally, it doesn't matter, or a service (right clic on the file and boom folder around it.
So if anyone could help with this I'd be grateful...

    Hi,
Make an Automator Service (Service receives selected "Files or Folders"  in the "Finder.app").
Use this script in the "Run AppleScript" action:
    on run {input, parameters}
        tell application "Finder"
            repeat with aFile in input
if class of (item aFile) is not folder then
                    set {tName, fileExt} to {name, name extension} of aFile
if fileExt is not missing value and fileExt is not "" then
set tName to text 1 thru -((count fileExt) + 2) of tName
                        tell (get container of aFile)
                            if not (exists folder tName) then make new folder at it with properties {name:tName}
                            move aFile to folder tName
                        end tell
                    end if
                end if
            end repeat
        end tell
    end run
This script work on files with a name extension.

  • Cannot add files or folders to Library

iTunes was working fine, synching, ripping, adding MP3's.
All of a sudden, it stop being able to add MP3's from my harddrive. I can still rip CD's fine.
I've tried reinstalling both iTunes and the iPod software, but no dice.
No errors pop up. Sometimes the Processing box will pop up and show the progress bar and the filenames, but then nothing happens. Most of the time iTunes doesn't even blink.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

Found my own answer. Turns out the MP3's I had were corrupt. Just reformatted/reinstalled windows, and I guess when I burned them they didn't cook right to the DVD-RW and are hooped now.
They have file sizes, but are not valid MP3 files.

  • Managing files and folders with Pegasus R6

Sorry if this seems like a really newbie question, but it has me stumped.  Oh, and hello everyone! This is my first post on here.
I just purchased a new 27" iMac and the new Pegasus R6 (12TB) drive.  So now I am getting prepared to offload my old iMac with all the pictures and videos that have caused it to nearly grind to a Windows speed.
My software is Aperture 2, Adobe CS4 and Final Cut Studio express.
On to my question... Once I had all the software installed, and the Pegasus drive was done setting up (overnight), I dragged the Aperture 2 library over to the Pegasus drive.  It surprised me to see that the orginal library stayed on my iMac and a duplicate was now on the Pegasus drive.  I thought that maybe it was just a nuance in the way Aperture is.  So, I took a couple of photos that were just sitting in the iMac under a newly created folder and dragged and dropped those into the Pegasus drive.  Viola', those copied as well.  Now I have a copy on the iMac and the Pegasus.  I cannot figure out why the items are not moving, but duplicating.
    Any thoughts?

  • Cannot see files and folders on hard drive after reinstall of Tiger

    Hi all!
I just had to reinstall Tiger on my iMac G5 and when I look at my hard drive in Disk Utility it says I have 70000 some odd files and I've used 180GB of my hard drive but I haven't. I wiped it clean with zeroes before the reinstall, or so I thought. I can't see any of these "old" folders or files.
How do I reclaim this space?
    Thanks in advance!
    DW

Yes it was the MacIntosh HD volume.
I ended up recreating the partition booting with the OS X CD and using Disk Utility and then reinstalled Tiger. Now it works, and I have all my hard drive space available.
    Thanks!

  • Managing Files and Folders in Lightroom - Mac

I created a subfolder by mistake. Examination via iMac Finder shows that all files in the subfolders are duplicates of those in the main folder (which contains additional files as well). Catalog view shows many of the files in the main folder are already in the catalog (grayed out).
Please let me know if this is clear enough.
At some time I would like to learn how to remove those duplicate files. Could you point me to some sources giving the procedure.
To begin with, how can I take LR3 out of the "import" mode and just deal with things as they are?

To take Lightroom out of "Import" mode, click 'Cancel' (I assume by "Import mode" you mean that the import dialog box is open - clicking 'Cancel' closes it).
Now just delete the duplicates - i.e. in Library grid view, select them and press 'Delete' on your keyboard (or select them in the thumbnail filmstrip, context-click and select 'Delete Photos' with the mouse).
If you dont know which are duplicates, do tell...
If you accidentally delete too many, you can fish them out of the recycle bin, or your backup folder if you imported with backup option enabled.
    Hope this helps,
    Rob
