Cannot mount internal HD

iMac G3 running 9.2.2
Worked fine for months and then turned it on and now we just get a folder with the question mark at start up. Used a retail OS 9 disk with disk first aid. It indicates a b-tree issue and two other issues during verifying stage. I keep using the repair button but there seem s to be no resolution.
Also, while the OS 9 start up disk was in we checked the "start up disk" control panel and it showed the inserted disk but not the internal HD. Apple store locally said they don't support these any more.
Trying to help my son in DC with this and I am in Ohio. Hard to trouble shoot.
Can anyone help?

Don't worry about whether their is a System Folder or
whether it has any particular files in it. You've got
to either repair the format b-tree of the hard drive
or initialize it. If you don't want to spend the
money for TechTool Pro or other heavy-duty disk
repair software, (which may or may not solve the
problems) you can fix the problem by initializing the
hard drive. That will erase everything on it and,
unless the drive is physically failing (unlikely), it
will be ready to install OS 9.
If you want to bite the bullit and initialize, boot
to the OS 9 install CD (or the iMac Install CD) and
open Drive Setup from the Utilities folder. Drive
Setup will show the hard drive but may say "not
initialized" which means it has an unreadable format.
Next, click on the line that describes the hard drive
and then click on the "Initialize" button. You will
get a warning that it will erase all data on the
drive. Take a big gulp and click again on initialize.
In less than 5 seconds, you will see the hard drive
icon on the desktop. Quit Drive Setup and open Mac OS
Install.
You have another option just after initializing and,
since this option can only be used during
initializing, now is the time to consider it. You can
make two partitions of the hard drive if it is big
enough to make it worth while. That will give you a
second-chance drive volume (another name for
partition) which can be mighty handy. I keep my
documents on a different partition from my operating
system. It is most often the startup disk partition
that gets the serious errors and fails to mount.
Often, you can erase that volume while booted to the
install CD and reinstall. Usually the errors will be
gone and your documents will remain. But this option
is NOT REALLY NECESSARY (like it is with some Windows
systems) AND NOT RECOMMENDED BY APPLE COMPUTER.
That's what you will be told by Apple so I have just
gotten it over with and told you myself. It's a darn
good option, nonetheless. To do this, just click on
the Custom Setup button that appears after your first
click on the Initialize button. Make the uppermost
partition 1-2 GB for OS 9 only, 4-7.9GB for OS X and
OS 9. Others will recommend more but I don't see the
real need so long as you have another partition with
space for your documents and as many applications as
OS X will allow you to move there. Often you can make
aliases of applications on the other partition and
put the aliases in the Applications folder to keep OS
X happy. Software Updates for iTunes and other Apple
stuff will get confused about this and sometimes ask
you to download stuff you have on the other partition
but it's no more iritating that wet socks. Don't
exceed 7.9GB for reasons that may or may not matter
for your particular iMac and your particular OS X
installation. You can either type in the size or move
the "windowshade" up and down until it shows what you
want. Just below the lower windowshade will be a slit
called "unallocated space" or some such name. Move
the windowshade down until that space is minimized.
You'll almost surely never use it.
If you want to install OS X also, you will need 4-6
GB for the startup volume. Others will recommend more
but I don't see the real need so long as you have
another partition with space for your documents and
as many applications as OS X will allow you to move
there. Often you can make aliases of applications on
the other partition and put the aliases in the
Applications folder to keep OS X happy. Software
Updates for iTunes and other Apple stuff will get
confused about this and sometimes ask you to download
stuff you have on the other partition but it's no
more iritating that wet socks.
Do you know if the app TechTool Deluxe 2.5.7 that comes with the Applecare disk would do the trick?

Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.
Problem started when I used Tech Tool Pro 6 to "de-fragment volume". Had to cancel that process before it finished because I ran out of time. Thereafter, when I startup my machine normally, I get the gray Apple logo at first, but it changes to a prohibited symbol (circle with a slash thru it) and hangs.

When I startup from Tech Tool Pro 6 and run the "computer check" diagnostics, everything passes but the Volume Structure, which fails at "Volume Extents (B-tree)." When I use TTP's "Tools" option to run "volume repair" it will show my internal drive and allow me to click the GO button, but nothing happens and nothing changes.
I have a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive, but for as long as the internal drive doesn't mount, I can't use the backup to restore.

It's a false report and should be ignored.
I would not rely on TT as I've already said earlier even before Grant posted similar advice.
I really think the Rigid Disk Block may be corrupted. This holds the partition map and could prevent a volume from being unmounted. Unfortunately, there is no way to fix that without repartitioning the drive which will remove everything. So, before going down this road I hope you have backups or can make a backup.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.
    5. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • [SOLVED!] Cannot select internal/external mounts .......

    Greetings,
After being away doing some distro-hopping, I drifted back over to arch. Now I managed to work through many problems such as getting keyboard and mouse support without disabling hotplugging, and all of that, and am enjoying using ext4.
However there are two issues that I can't seem to overcome, and would greatly appreciate any help I can get in overcoming them...
1.) I cannot select internal mounts or usb cards or cd's, etc..
Basically I was trying to be able to mount/access my NTFS partition. At first I was getting that pesky "you can't do this, policy says no" error so I dug through wiki articles and forum posts. After following them (including doing computer restarts) I could not select either my ntfs partition or my mounted dvd disk. Basically what would happen is I would try to select it but my selection would bounce back to my home folder. No errors or nothing. It's like there is an invisible rubber force field preventing me from even thinking about touching those drives.
Now I have tried everything I can think of. I have removed everything I have done when following the wiki to get to a pre-trying to mount ntfs stage. Problem remains. I have dug through the wiki and countless forum posts trying out everything that looks feasible to my problem. Problem remains. I am now on day two, several advil later, and tired of hearing my computer laugh at me.... I really don't want to go through the whole reinstall trip...  I already spent a lot of work before trying to mount my ntfs drive getting my computer just how I want it. So any help in fixing this without a reinstall would be most appreciative. I will admit that I am tired of digging through the wiki, so if you must point me back to it, please kindly clarify what I may have missed instead of saying "read this" because 9 out of 10, I have read it and it hasn't helped.
2.) How do I get wicd to auto start?
Ok so I have installed wicd as my network manager. I followed the wiki to the T and it works great. However every time I restart (which I did a lot of trying to fix problem #1) I would end up having to restart the hal and wicd deamons then start up wicd again... So how do I get wicd to autostart?
Thanks in advance for any and all help on these two issues. If I posted in the wrong area, please forgive me. However I feel that these are newbie questions...

    Greetings,
I am using KDEMod current (i.e. KDE 4.2.1). I installed the Arch way, not the chakra tribe method, though I did test tribe earlier, it's neat.. just not as hands on...
I tried accessing with dophin. I would have tried with konqueror but as I recall konqueror now uses dolphin as kpart for file management so the results should be the same...
    Anyways,
    Here's my fstab...
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system>        <dir>         <type>    <options>          <dump> <pass>

    UUID=eabea9d9-d15d-48e0-993e-212d162823d9 swap swap defaults 0 0
You should notice that I didn't add my ntfs partion to fstab as I read somewhere that with hot plugging you weren't supposed to...
    Here's  my rc.conf - daemons
    # DAEMONS
    # Daemons to start at boot-up (in this order)
    #   - prefix a daemon with a ! to disable it
    #   - prefix a daemon with a @ to start it up in the background
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !network wicd netfs crond alsa hal kdm)
If you need the rest of my rc.conf, let me know. However I believe that only the daemons should matter with wicd...
And btw- thanks for your reply.

  • After boot can't mount SDS file systems on 3300 mount: cannot mount /dev/md

    Hi
I have a SUNW,Netra-440 with two SE 3300 SCSI each with two controllers. The server was working fine but after a boot, it can not see the metadevices stored in the 3300.
I have tried restarting the SE3300 and a boot -r from ok prompt but I still can see those disks or partitions.

i can see the devices in /dev/md/appvol but i can't mount them.
Any ideas what this could be? using metaset shows nothing, metastat -s dbvol hangs.
Am I missing some patch or am I missing something here? is the SE3300 damaged? or is it a problem with SDS (solstice). I have solaris 9.
The system was working fine until we had to boot and power off to perform power tests in the rack.
    thanks

    Hi,
    thanks for your answer.
Yes format displays the physical devices, but metadb -i only shows the internal disks of the netra 440, not the ones in the 3320. metadb -s dbvol -i doesnt show anything.
metaset which is supposed to show me the metadevices, says the program is not registered.
cat /etc/lvm/md.tab has the configuration but since the scsi can be seen, the devices aren't mounted.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers
    Oscar

I have a Gen 2 connected right now, it most definitely uses UMS. I have a Gen 4 at home that also uses UMS. I've got to assume your Gen 3 would as well.
Does it go to the "USB Drive Mode" screen when you plug it in?
Edit: Do remember having an issue one time where it would not go into USB mode. Rebooting the Kindle fixed it. On my Gen 2, you would go to the Home screen, then hit menu and settings, hit menu again and there's an option for "Restart".

  • Disk Utility can't mount internal disk but tells me use First Aid?

I have a Western Digital internal 500 GB hard drive that has failed. At first, Disk Utility did tell me it was damaged but still was able to mount it - giving me partial use. I also ran Disk Warrior and was able to salvage some files.
My good news is that Western Digital is replacing it, no problem. However, I have to send this one back and I want to erase the contents. But now Disk Utility cannot mount it at all and give me this cryptic message: "The Disk, WD500, could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."
My question is, how can I run First Aid when Disk Utility cannot mount it. (I tried booting from my Install disk and running it from there.) S.M.A.R.T status says, failing. All the usual options such as erase, partition, repair are not available, though the drive shows up, in bright red.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.
Anyone know of a way for me to simply erase this drive before having to return it to WD.

    Hello Noodle-head;
Disk Utility cannot mount it at all and give me this cryptic message: ...
So you're having a HD mounting problem, Hmm.
I have tried selecting both. Neither gives me any options.
If the HD shows up in the Disk Utility App then there's a way to toast it.
Whoa! ... Now if I can just find out what a magnetron magnet is...
Don't bother because the only magnets powerful enough to scrub data from a drive platter are laboratory degaussers or those used by government agencies to wipe bits off media. That's the reason why the Disk Utility App has a '35 Zero-Pass Security Erase' option.
So you have two choices ...
Your first choice is to just send it back and don't worry about it. I doubt that WD will try to access your data unless you want them to. It's very expensive to retrieve data on a dead/dying HD. All they will probably do is verify that the HD is dead/dying & send you a replacement.
Your second choice depends upon your knowledge of Unix, if you have more than one Mac, plus if you have a Windows PC.
Let me know if you want to 'toast it' or not.
    Later ...

  • SunBlade 100 - cannot mount/boot from CD-Rom

    Dear Forum,
Please excuse what are very basic questions - I'm very new to Sun and Unix and still feeling my way around :o) I would be very grateful if someone has the time to help me with this.
I installed Solaris 10 on my inherited Blade 100 and all works fine except for I cannot mount the cdrom (I get the message Mount point cannot be determined) Under advisement from a distant friend of a friend, I tried stopping vold and then mounting the drive but it still doesn't work. Another friend suggested I replace Solaris 10 with Debian Linux... but the poor ole blade couldn't find the CDROOM from the OK prompt either.
At a guess - I'm thinking that the drive has actually just died. The machine was sat around for 3 years doing nothing. But its equally likely that I screwed up the OS from being a complete airhead, so any tips on how to trouble shoot this would be most welcome.
If I need to replace the drive, I have a couple of old Ultras that I can cannibalize for a replacement drive - plus a few pcs. I would be grateful for any tips on doing this too.
    many thanks in advance,
    Kate

A couple or 'corrections' if I may.
There is no such command as probe-ide-all.
IDE devices can only be internal ones and the -all syntax is an OBP syntax to look at external devices.
It shouldn't work. It should not provide usable information.
If you need to review how to work within the OpenBoot environment,
then here is the OBP 4.x Command Reference Manual from Docs.Sun.Com
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs?q=816-1177
Next, your report that "boot cdrom" was returned when you probed the IDE bus ...
    ... just doesn't make sense.
A command does not produce another command as its output report.
The result of an OBP probe of whatever bus you're examining (not IDE, not SCSI)
should not return another command as its result.
Replace the optical drive in that SunBlade 100.
They were prone to spontaneous failure.
    Just replace the drive.

  • Cannot mount certain partitions: /dev/ entries do not exist

Hello all. Strange problem here. First I will describe my disk layout. I triple boot Gentoo, Arch, and FreeBSD. My partitions look like this:
    /dev/hda = MAXTOR 6L040J2, ATA DISK drive 40GB
    hda1 = shared '/boot' partition
    hda2 = gentoo '/' partition
    hda3 = gentoo '/usr/' partition
    hda4 = gentoo '/home' partition
    /dev/hdb = SAMSUNG SP0802N, ATA DISK drive 80GB
hdb1 = shared music partition mounted as /home/music on both Gentoo and Arch
    hdb2 = shared swap partition
    hdb3 = FreeBSD partition
    hdb4 = logical Partition
    hdb5 = archlinux '/' partition
hdb6 = shared video partition mounted as /home/music/video on both Gentoo and Arch
Now both gentoo and arch use devfs. From gentoo I can see all partitions in the /dev directory and mount accordingly, however, from Arch I cannot mount my gentoo partitions on /dev/hda, and in fact they do not even exist in the /dev directory. Only /dev/hda1 is visible (the shared boot partition which holds all my kernels regardless of distro).
Running fdisk -l /dev/hda from arch gives me this puzzling output:
    Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40027029504 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4866 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/hda1 * 1 4111 33021576 55 EZ-Drive
So it would seem that fdisk thinks that /dev/hda1 takes up the entire drive, and is labeled as 'EZ-Drive'?!?!?!?!?!? I can assure you that running the same command from gentoo gives me the correct partitions and disklabels ie: id 83  Linux
Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on here? This isn't really a big deal at this point, just an interesting annoyance that I would like to discover the cause of.
    TIA

I don't know how it could be that the kernels interpret the partition table differently, and I'm certainly not sure that this is what's going on. That's why I suggested loading Arch with the Gentoo kernel. I wouldn't expect the system to be its true self, but merely satesfy the curiosity by checking whether it would see the right partitions (a.k.a. trouble-shooting).
It shouldn't be a problem to test this, unless your Arch root uses a file system that is not built into your Gentoo kernel. If for instance hdb5 is reiserfs and your 2.4 kernel has that as a module, you're probably out of luck regarding my suggestion. If this is the case, you could also try the Arch 2.4 kernel. It can coexist with your current kernel because the kernel packages for the two trees have different names.
    pacman -S kernel
    Hope this helps,
    -bogo

  • Cannot mount any firewire/USB external drive after software update 10.5.4

After the last software update on 10.5.4 it did not complete the installation, and get stuck at the last step of running installation script for hours. So I have to restart the computer, and it restarted fine. Then I use Disk Utility to check my hard disk, and discovered some file system inconsistency error, so I repaired it (in target disk mode by another Mac). After it is repaired, the file system passed with no error.
But ever since then, I cannot mount any external firewire drive or USB drive. I cannot use Time Machine to backup my disk. I think my firewire and USB ports are fine because I can restart my iMac in target mode and connect to my MacBook via firewire, so the hardwire ports are functional, except that it seems 10.5.4 cannot detect or mount any external drive after the failed software update.
Does anyone encounter similar problem? How can I fix it? I have my disk backed up by TimeMachine but I cannot restore it if it won't let me mount my TimeMachine disk. Is there any other way other than completely reinstall 10.5 from scratch?

first, you should try reinstalling 10.5.4. download the [combo update|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1054com boupdate.html] and run it. If that doesn't fix the issue, you can use full system restore from TM to go back to a time before the troubles started. to do that boot from the leopard install dvd, once past the language screen go to the Utilities menu at the top and choose "restore from backup".

  • Cannot Mount Any ISO in Windows 8.1 Pro

I cannot mount any ISO images on my Windows 8.1 Pro machine.  I have tried the "Mount" under right-click as well as Powershell with the same results. From the UI, I get a simple message "Sorry there was a problem mounting the file."
while from Powershell I get an HResult that from searching seems to be rather generic.
I have followed the idea about upper filter and lower filter.  I have made sure that the ISO is not "sparse".  I made sure that ISO's are associated with Windows Explorer. I have tried a number of ISO's all from either TechNet or MSDN
with the same results.  ProcMon doesn't really offer anything useful as the number of entries is overwhelming to try to limit to just mounting an image.
I read several posts where drive letters were an issue, but no guidance was given regarding what drive letter the virtual drive preferred.
I can mount the same ISO files on another Windows 8.1 Pro machine, so it isn't the ISO itself.
Any ideas? I have spent the entire day working on this problem and I really need some help.
    Thanks,
    Glen

I was struggling with this too. I found that the problem is a 'sparse' attribute that gets added by the Akamai downloader (known bug).  To fix just copy the ISO (and the VHD) files to another folder this removes the (P).  I found the answer at:
    http://serverfault.com/questions/424794/fail-to-mount-image-files-in-windows-server-2012
    Rusty
    Rusty Brown
I have used mounting ISO images, sparce files and so on. No issues.
this suggests its time for a fresh install of windows, backup twice in case of the unthinkable

  • Cannot  mount USB disk in SIngle-user mode (solaris 10)

    Hi all ,
I need some help please :
I can read/write to my USB disks when i'm in muti-user mode but when to I swith to single-user mode ( init S ), I cannot mount it.
in Single-user mode , i started volume management daemon :
    #/etc/init.d/volgmt start
    #volcheck
but i'm still not able to mount it.
    I tried to mount manually:
    #mount /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /testpoint , i have this error: < mount : not a UFS magic number ( 0x0) , dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 is not of this fstype.
My system recognizes the USB device though in single-user mode:
This is an output of #iostat -En
c2t0d0 Soft Errors: 1 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: BUFFALO Product: ClipDrive Revision: 2.00 Serial No:
    Size:0.07GB <65339392 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 1 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

    Hi ,
thanks for your advice. My problem is resolved.
The USB drive was actually a FAT filesystem.
so I did # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /testpoint and everything went fine
I can read/write to my USB disks when i'm in
muti-user mode but when to I swith to single-user
    mode ( init S ), I cannot mount it.
in Single-user mode , i started volume management
    daemon :
    /etc/init.d/volgmt start
    #volcheck
but i'm still not able to mount it.It probably requires other items to be started
    first.
    I tried to mount manually:
    #mount /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /testpoint , i have
    this
    error: < mount : not a UFS magic number ( 0x0) ,
dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 is not of this fstype.
Looks like it's assuming UFS. If this is a pcfs
filesystem, give it the type on the mount line.
    # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /testpointYeah, this was the right command, I had to specify option < -F pcfs >.
but I read somethere on this forum i had to specify :c as the drive for FAT at the end of c2t0d0p0 , so the full command was:
    # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /testpoint

  • Error message in Command line (cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode)

    Hello Experts
I'm new in Oracle and trying to connect to my database though SQL command line. After I login as SYS I user I get the message that 'connected to idle instance'. Then I use “STARTUP” to connect to database. Now from my understanding it should mount the database and open it as well. But it does'nt happens.Instead I get the message 'cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode' . I'm not sure why it can't mound the database and what should I do to make it working. Please can somebody show me how to make it working again. Here are the details about my problem
    Enter user-name: SYS as SYSDBA
    Enter password:
    Connected to an idle instance.
    SQL> startup
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 595591168 bytes
    Fixed Size 1220748 bytes
    Variable Size 301993844 bytes
    Database Buffers 285212672 bytes
    Redo Buffers 7163904 bytes
ORA-01102: cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Thank you so much for both of you. I've checked everything. All looks fine to me and then i tried to connect though SQL and it worked. Now what I've notice that this time I didn't start Enterprise Manager only I started the listner and then start sql it worked. Does this means that I can't use both SQL and EM at a time together?

  • Portal on Unix cannot mount Windows File server

    Hi Experts,
We had installed a NW 7.0 portal onto HP-UNIX server and integrated it with MS AD server. Now, we are facing an issue that we cannot mount windows files server when we tried to configured it with TREX. Had anyone tried this function or it is the limitation? Is the following statement still correct or do we have workaround solutions?
"If you are using the Microsoft Active Directory Service, you can only integrate documents into a Windows portal. The combination of Microsoft Active Directory Service and a UNIX portal is not supported."
    Best Regards

    Hi Tom,
have a look at this link:
Your issue should work, but the prerequisite is for using the windows permissions:
"If you are using Microsoft Active Directory Service, you have to operate the Windows domain in mixed mode". If it is running in Native mode you cannot use the windows permissions. Nevertheless integrating documents into KM should work. The KM uses its own permissions instead.
    Best regards,
    Denis

  • ORA-01102: cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode

    Hello,
I am working with an Oracle VM Template: Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3 WebCenter (x86 32-bit). In this template exists an Oracle database (version: 10.2.0.3.0), I am trying to do something operation (ie create a new user, query a system template, etc) but I can't because I have ORA-01102 error.
I have DB and listener up :

    I have export environment variables:
    export ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/
    export ORACLE_SID = orcl
    +export PATH = ${ORACLE_HOME}bin:${PATH}+
    Then I connect to DB:
    sqlplus> connect / as sysdba
    +sqlplus> shutdown {abort/immediate}+
    ORA-01507: database not mount+
    ORACLE instance shutdown
    +sqlplus> startup {mount}+
    ORACLE instance startup

So, I have checked listener.ora and tnsnames.ora and they are OK, so I don't know why I can't access to the DB.
    Any idea/suggestion is welcome!
Thank you in advance and regards,
    Mónica.
