Cannot open iTunes after moving to new Mac

I just replaced my original MacBook with one of the new ones, the aluminum 2.0 GHz one with the RAM upgraded to 4 GB. I had everything on the hard drive of my old computer transferred to the new computer by the staff at the Apple store.
However, now when I try to open iTunes, I get a message saying, "The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes," and no iTunes window. Every iTunes menu option is grayed over except for "Hide iTunes" and "Hide others", so I can't check for updates. When I click OK to the message saying "The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes," iTunes closes.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Update you iTunes by running Software Update (Apple Menu-> Software Update) or going to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.

  • Cannot open iTunes after upgrade due to missing .dll file

I cannot open iTunes after a recent upgrade.
The error is "Applepushservice.dll is missing.  Please reinstall iTunes."  Which I have now done 8 times.
I have uninstalled everything, clear the cache and rebooted.
Now what?  Can I download the file from somewhere else and if so, where do I install it?
    Many thanks.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:

We cannot open iTunes after installing it. When we click on the icon the licensing agreement comes up and we click Agree but then nothing happens.  Each time we click the icon the agreement comes up.  We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but we have the exact same problem.

  • Cannot open iTunes after upgrading to 7.3.1

Just traded my mini for a nano and upgraded from iTunes 6. I was able to install 7.3.1 (Windows XP) and sync the ipod so all of my music is on it, no problems. But after I closed iTunes after the syncing I can't re-open iTunes at all-- I get the message:
'The iTunes Library.itl file cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the iTunes folder in the “My Music” folder'
    Please help!! Thanks.

+HOWEVER, once my library finished loading into iTunes, another error message came up:+
+The iTunes library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1302).+
Okay. It's sounding like there was some problem with the original library file (that you had for the previous version) that has been preventing the library update from going through properly. That would fit with the non-appearance of the new .itl file with the upgrade, and the problems with generating a new library file from the old version of the library file.
So it might be worth trying a library recreation at this point in time. For instructions on that, the following document should be of some assistance.
How to recreate your iTunes Library
After the library recreation, does itunes launch properly? (without the 1302 we got from the attempt to revitalise the old library file?)

  • "There was a problem connecting to the server" in iTunes after migrating to new mac

I have a problem that is driving me crazy with my brand new iMac. I see many other people posting similar issues, but none of the other solutions seem to work for me.
I had a MacPro and bought a new iMac, on which I used Migration Assistant to set up. So the new iMac is virtually the same as my old machine in terms of appearance and installed applications. Both machines have Mountain Lion 10.8.2. All software on both machines has been through Software Update and is fully up to date, as are the connected devices (iPhone and iPad).
The problem is with iTunes. Every time I start iTunes (I think at the moment it checks my two connected devices) I get a pop up dialogue saying:
There was a problem connecting to the server "MacPro".
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
This dialogue continues to pop up constantly as long as iTunes is open, interrupting my work and frustrating me no end. The old machine is of course turned off and indeed is not available -- but I can't find what on the new iMac is so desperate to connect to it.
So far I have tried completing erasing my iTunes library, deleting all the preferences, reinstalling iTunes from a fresh download of the dmg, safe rebooting several times with no peripherals connected at all, and deleteing other preferences like the Login Items, iPhone config and iPhoto. I have also cleared Recent Items from the apple menu and opened "Connect to Server" in the finder and cleared all servers from the dropdown menu.
Last night I also completely restored my iPhone from scratch to see if that would clear away the issue and I have connected both iPhone and iPad to go through any apps that have permission to write content to my computer and deleted all of them completely from the devices.
Nothing has changed at all after all that, and I have run out of ideas. Clearly there is something somewhere that has my old machine's name hard coded in it but I can't see any way to search for it. I would grep my Library folder but I think a lot of the files are binary so I'm not sure that would unearth anything. I've seen many posts saying that Apple phone support (which I would qualify for) can't help with this issue and so I have put off phoning them to simply run through all the things I've already tried.
Any advice that anyone could offer would be extremely helpful. I can't use iTunes at all like this as it disrupts everything I try to do on the new machine.
    many thanks!!

Nothing at all? Can't anyone help with this issue at all? I would be grateful for any suggstions as it is driving me crazy. It happens every time I open iTunes and also every time I open Mail.

  • Cannot open iTunes after upgrading it because of computer version

I just upgraded iTunes to the latest version last night and now it will not let me open due to the fact that I have a Mac Os X 10.4.6 and need 10.4.7 to open iTunes. Is there a way to upgrade the Mac Os X without paying money? If not, can I down-grade my iTunes then?
    Thanks a bunch!!

Download any of the compatible updaters from this page or run the Software Update pane of System Preferences. Updating from any Mac OS X 10.4 version to any newer Mac OS X 10.4 version is free.

  • I can't open iTunes on my brand new Mac!I am getting the message that I am exceeding my limit of 5 computers! Huh, I only have two desktops and two laptops (not counting my new MacBook Pro). I do have an old (discarded) laptop that had iTunes! Help!!

Hi! I have a new MacBook Pro, but I haven't been able to put iTunes on it even though I have used it for years on my iPhone, iPad, and two Windows desktops and two Windows laptops. I keep getting the message that "I am exceeding my iTunes account limit of 5 computers (not counting my iPhone and iPad, which are explicitly excluded from the count according to the message)". As anyone can see, I only have 4 computers, so I should not have any problems with installing iTunes, but this same message says that I need to deauthorize at least one computer or maybe I have extra authorizations on a computer.
I can't even find a list or map of the computers on my iTunes account! Please, somebody help ASAP!!!!! Thanks!!!!!

  • Cannot Open iTunes After Upgrading to 6.0.4

I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and ever since, I cannot open the program on my computer. I have tried everything they say to do in the on line support manual. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have sent a few hours on this and nothing they tell me to try is solving the problem.

    hi goldylocks!
    Error Number: 0x80040707
Description: DLL function call crashed: QTInstallCode.QuickTimePostInstallProc
that's a known complication of a broken QuickTime. in this context, it usually means the installation configuration information of the QuickTime has been compromised.
    here's what we'll try first.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
next use the QuickTime component of the complete uninstall instructions in the following document as a guide to a manual removal of leftover QuickTime program files and folders.
Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or QuickTime software in Windows
once we've got all the existing QuickTime scraped away, let's try another careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall.
does it go through properly this time? if so, does your itunes launch properly again?

  • ITunes and Apple TV Won't Sync After Moving to New Mac HD

I've had to clone my 10.5.5 system onto a new HD. Now the Apple TV that previously synced doesn't see iTunes 8.0.1. On the Apple TV under Settings>Computer, the link to my iTunes library is greyed out. However from iTunes on the Mac, I can still select the Apple TV for AirTunes and stream to it so they are connecting on some level. I'm fairly certain that I could turn off the sync on the Apple TV side and set up a new one. However that will likely result in the entire 23GB library being erased on the Apple TV and copied again over the network. Is there a way to save many hours and reconnect the libraries without copying everything again?

I haven't seen any reports of it being done with version 2 of the tv software, but under version 1, if you set up a new primary library from the tv which was essentially the same as the library you were replacing, it wouldn't re-write anything which it didn't need to.
As I say, I have no idea if this is the same with version 2 software.

  • Can't find Motion 5 in purchases after moving to new Mac Pro!

Just upgraded from MBP RD to the new MacPro. All souped up. I transfered all my MBP stuff from my time capsule Time Machine back ups directly into the new MC Pro. It worked out but to my surprise, many of the applications didn't make it. Ok. that's fine.. I'll do those manually. FCPX & Compressor did... But Motion 5 didn't! What's worse, is when I go to the App Store and look at the Purchases, it doesn't even show that I've purchased Motion! I don't get it! Why can't I see Motion any more?! Is there only one license for it or am I missing something? I basically have to buy it again? It shows that I have to buy it. Please help!

I'd start by making sure you didn't accidentally hide your purchase.  Open the App Store application.  From the Store menu, select "View my account".  Once you log in you should see your Account information Page.  In the section "iTunes in the Cloud"  click the Manage button.
If you've accidentally hidden it, you can unhide from this section.  Another option, if you have Motion still installed on our old comptur, you can just copy it over to the MP by network drag and drop or AirDrop.  Just copy it to the Applications folder.
