Cannot open Word documents from CD

Pages will not open read-only files from CD. While it is possible to copy the files from CD to the hard drive and open them from there, this work-around is not optimal. I use several resource CDs that contain Word files as well as other file types.
Instead of copying files from a CD in order to be able to open them, it makes much more sense to allow Pages to open them directly from the CD in read-only mode.
Is there a secret way to enable this behavior? If not, Apple, will you add this functionality to Pages?

Hello
It seems that Pages is coded to save an imported file (which is the case for a .doc one) in the folder from which it was imported.
When the folder belongs to a CD, this can't be done and Pages refuses to import the doc.
I's not a bug, it's a feature.
Delberate or not is an other question.
If this feature is annoying from your point of you, described the problem to the official channel because here we are users trying to help other users.
We are not members of the Pages team.
So, *go to "Provide Numbers Feedback" in the "Pages" menu* and describe what you wish.

  • Cannot Open Word Documents on Desktop

    I cannot open word docs from desktop. We use Folder Redirection for the desktop and documents folders, but I don't have issues with excel or pdf files, and I'm able to open word documents from start menu.
     here is the error I'm getting servername\RedirectedFolders\"username"\Desktop\file.
    cannot be found. Check your spelling, or try a different path.

    Hi,
    Did this issue occur on all directed Word documents or some? Could you open the local Word document?
    Please make sure this file is indeed exists in that path.
    If it is, stop folder redirection, directly access the folder use UNC path for test.
    If it works fine, please redirect again to confirm the issue.

  • I can't open word documents from Finder

    I can't open word documents from Finder

    If you mean "I can't double click a *doc file and make word open" then you highlight the file and do a command-I (or get info).  When the window comes up, change the "open with" parameter.  You can also right click and select "other"

  • Cannot open Word document attachment in mail before sending.

    Cannot open Word document attachment in mail before sending.
    In Snow Leopard Mail 4, (Version 4.0 (1075/1075.2)) if I attach a word document to a message and, BEFORE sending the message, I double click the attached document to open it, to make sure it is the right one, I get the error "Mail was unable to save the attachment “Test.doc” to disk. Verify that your downloads folder exists and is writable."
    The attachment is mailed correctly and arrives at the destination, but the ability to verify an attached document before sending it is essential. This has worked fine in all previous editions of OS X.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks - Lawrence

    I have same problem. I've done the following testing to pinpoint where the problem lies and there are clues (see below):
    1. My machine had SnowLeopard installed "fresh" (i.e. disk reformat and installed cleanly)
    2. I have a comparison machine running Leopard (10.5.6) - essentially a mirror but with different OS
    3. Problem is triggered when creating new email, with a MS Word .doc attachment added. If you attempt to open the attached file in the mail (not yet sent) it produces the error message "unable to save file XXX.doc to disk. Verify that your downloads folder exists and is writeable"
    4.However, once the mail is sent, the recipient can open the attachment without problems.
    5. I have run Disk Utility and all permissions are correct. My downloads folder exists.
    6. The problem is not present in Leopard (mirror machine other than OS)
    7. I have uninstalled and reinstalled MS Office. Problem still present
    8. I have deleted and recreated the preference files for both MS Office and for Mail. Problem still present.
    And finally...
    9.The problem is confined to .doc files.It works fine for .pdf, .ods AND even for Microsoft .xls files.
    So it may be a MS Word problem triggered by Snow Leopard?
    Apple: if you can confirm this is a Microsoft problem it may be able to be reported to them as a compatibility issue?
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot open Word document files in a Portfolio

    I have set up a portfolio with multiple file types. I can open Excel and Power Point files within the portfolio without a problem. When I try to open Word documents it tells me that "Acrobat cannot open this file attachment because your pdf file attachment settings do not allow for this file type to be opened. I went into preferances and checked to see if the box was checked in "trust manager" to allow files other than pdf to opened. It is checked but I am still unable to open word documents in the portfolio for some reason.

    Acrobat cannot open Word files. Have you tried opening the files from within Word? If so, most probably you have a file association problem.

  • HOW TO OPEN WORD DOCUMENT FROM JAVA???

    hi everyone! Can you please help me to come with this problem? Let me to set my main target I want to achieve:
    1) In my program user should first press a button;
    2) Then already created Word Document should be opened (I DO NOT NEED to open that Word Document in Java or something like JField). Just simply it should be opened as a Microsoft Word Document.
    I DO NEED YOUR HELP! PLEASE HELP ME....!

    Running cmd using the exec is also a windows only solution, there is no "more" or "less" it that solution compared to the rundll.
    Since word is a windows format its pretty obvious that the application is ran under windows platform.
    If you are running on a different platform (maybe using open office you can open word documents, i'm not sure) you might want to use the JDIC library (https://jdic.dev.java.net/) which enables you to open/edit/browse such files using the default viewer/editor/browser of the system you are working on.
    Look at the org.jdesktop.jdic.desktop.Desktop object for these methods.
    You can also find the Desktop object in J2SE6 but its still in beta.

  • Cannot open word document anymore since last update.

    I have a Macbook Air, bought in july 2013. I've done all the updates as suggested. But since the last one I suddenly cannot open certain files that were mailed to me. On my Iphone I can still read them. Every time I try to open a word document in my mail, it's not opening, and I get the suggestion to buy I Works.
    I am not very good at understanding why this suddenly happens, and what I can do to be able to open the file.
    It's not a problem if I do need to buy this new software I works, but which one should I buy then?
    I hope someone can explain to me what I need to do, hopefully in an understandeble way, thanks!!
    Mrtj

    I believe I understand now. You "upgraded" from OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard to OS X 10.9x Mavericks when you bought the MBA, didn't you? And now your copy of MS Office 2004, which I suspect was copied over from your previous computer, no longer works. Look in the /Applications folder and see if there is a folder for Microsoft Office and see if there is a year in the name.
    You have three choices.
    1. You can purchase the most recent version of MS Office. This will ensure full document compatibility across platforms.
    2. You can purchase Pages from the Mac App Store, which will allow you to open edit and save Word files. Although it is not a seamless process and documents with complex formatting and/or tables might not preserve their attributes when opened in Pages.
    3. You can download and install an open source office replacement such as Libre Office or Open Office. Although the same caveats apply as with Pages.

  • I cannot open a document from an earlier version of pages.

    Hope someone has a helpful solution for me.  I am trying to access my resume that I did in an earlier version of Pages.  I tried to open it today and saw an error saying that the document could not be opened.  I have tried researching this and basically have no solution.  I need my resume and don't know what to do. Has anyone else figured out a solution other than blowing up their computer?
    Sharon

    Copy/paste from TextEdit works. The use of Pages v5 has created more problems than user solutions. Make certain you export to Word format as a backup. Pages v5.5.1 will make a huge 500Kb Word document. You will need to open and save it out from either MS Word, or the free LibreOffice to reduce it down to small double-digits in size.
    Sharon, there is a Yosemite community under the general category of MacOS & System Software. Post your Yosemite questions there, and you should get competent answers to your questions. Responders to your question(s) will want to know the year and make of your Mac, how much memory is installed, and if you upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks, or an older OS X installation. The Apple > About this Mac can provide useful info. Be as concise as you can while still conveying the issue you want resolved. If you are running anti-virus software, state that as it is a known performance and stability decrement for OS X.
    Yosemite is now one revision beyond the base release. Each new iteration of updates to Yosemite will fix bugs, attend to some usability issues, and improve performance. I am running Yosemite on a 2014 MacBook Air with 4GB of memory. It has been flawless — if not overly art-deco for my taste.

  • Need to open word document from flash projector on Windows and Mac

    Hello,
    I'm creating a flash program that will be put on a dvd. And the dvd should function well on both windows and mac.
    I'm trying to open a word document on click of a button. I used geturl but it works only on windows but on mac it only opens a blank browser.
    This is urgent and would be really grateful if I get any help to resolve this problem
    Thanks,
    Sunira

    I kind of doubt you could get Safari to open MS Office files. Short of actually getting MS Office for the Mac, the most workable option might be to get NeoOffice/J (a Mac-friendly version of OpenOffice from http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/index.php. It won't display some Office files 100% correctly (depending on how complex they are) but it can open and save them.

  • How to open word document from application server?

    hello ,
    I want to open a word document that is placed on the application server.
    the function module 'ws_execute' works fine for displaying documents placed on ur local file system. But if i want to open from application server, what needs to b done?
    i m referring to the following demo program 'SAPRDEMOOFFICEINTEGRATION'
    is this the correct reference or there is some other way to do the same?
    kindly help.
    Regards,
    Roshani

    Hi Roshani,
              The solution is like this.
    1> Execute - this is the solution to your program. The file is generated and put in the Application Server for the data to be sent by some means to the intended Place.
    2> To Display/View - This is for the person (who runs the program) to view if the output generated is correct or not.
             So to accomplish this use the same internal table for both Open Dataset and Gui download.
    Open dataset puts data onto the Application server and Gui_download puts the data onto the Desktop or Presentation server for the user to see the data thats fetched.
    So use them as directed to achieve the desired output.
    Reward Points.
    Thanks,
    Tej..

  • Can't Open Word Documents from my School's Website

    I am in a class that requires me to download & print off worksheets from the school's online "blackboard" website. My teacher also has a Mac, and she uses Microsoft software for Mac. Since I use Pages instead, can I not open these documents? I also can't open PowerPoint presentations on my MacBook, I am sure this for the same reason.
    If anyone could help me out with this, I would really appreciate it.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Two things you may not have done.
    First, use the Mac OS 10.6.2 combo update. This fixes a problem with the Hoefler Text font that is not fixed using the delta update (10.6.1 > 10.6.2).
    Second, make sure your iWork applications are updated. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.2 & Numbers 2.0.2. iWork '09 has since had update 3. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • Open word document from APEX

    Evening folks!
    I am new to APEX and I've struggled thus far so this forum has been a life-saver.
    I'm hoping there is a solution to my new problem ;-)
    I have successfully exported data from APEX to csv (HUGE thanks to the spendolini blog) and I can use that csv file as a data source for a mail-merge word document, but I have a couple of questions:
    1. I'd like the csv file to save to a specified location without prompting the user to open, save etc. Is this possible?
    2. I'd like to open a specified mail-merge word document automatically from within my APEX application. Is this possible?
    To explain, ideally I would like the user to click on the export button and it save the data to a specified csv file automatically and then automatically open a specified mail-merge word document.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Winnie

    Exporting a .csv to a directory instead of prompting user to save the file is done using
    a similar function:
       PROCEDURE export_to_csv (p_directory IN VARCHAR2, p_filename_in VARCHAR2)
       IS
          v_file   UTL_FILE.file_type;
          CURSOR c_emp
          IS
             SELECT empno, ename, job
               FROM emp;
       BEGIN
          v_file := UTL_FILE.fopen (p_directory, p_filename_in, 'W');
          UTL_FILE.put_line (v_file,
                             'EMPNO' || ';' || 'ENAME' || ';' || 'MANAGER'
          FOR c IN c_emp
          LOOP
             UTL_FILE.put_line (v_file,
                                c.empno || ';' || c.ename || ';' || c.job);
          END LOOP;
          UTL_FILE.fclose (v_file);
       END export_to_csv;The cursor is hardcoded here. You could enter your select statement also as a
    parameter and create a "generic" solution, for all purposes.
    I don't know much about mail merge. Others will need to help there.

  • Open Word Document from Powershell script

    I've created a simple Powershell menu script to launch a few applications with but need to open some word docs as well from this script. I've tried several options and can get word to open but have not been able to get it to open a specific document. Just
    need the proper code to launch MS word and open a specific word document located on my network share. Any takers??????? :)

    You can just specify the path to the Word file and it should open it as long as the file associations are correct.
    "\\server\share\path\wordfile.docx"

  • Cannot open word documents without it asking me to purchase Office 2010 buy I do have Microsoft Office.

    I have been using Word Starter 2010 for almost 2 years now but a few days ago I went to open a document and it said "The Microsoft Office product necessary to open this file is not installed on your computer." I click activate and it asks for
    a product key which I don't have because I am just using the copy that was installed into my computer when I bought it almost 2 years ago. If I go to Word Starter 2010 itself I can open these documents however I cannot just click on the icons. Can someone
    help please! Thanks.

    Hi
    There might be file association problem with your Office program, we recommend you right click on the file>Open with and select Office Starter as the default program to open these files.
    We might also do a repair for Office Starter: Control panel>Program and features>Office Starter>Change>Repair
