Cannot prevent display from dimming after period of inactivity

once again, another weird unexplainable problem that has been discussed on here but never quite solved. this has nothing to do with the ambient light sensor or the "pass your hand over the speaker grill" situation.
the problem is that my screen dims after about 2 minutes of inactivity. I've got the "reduce screen brightness before sleep" UNchecked, and the "adjust brightness as ambient light changes" is also UNchecked. I've made these settings for both the power adapter and the battery. I don't see any reason why the screen should dim unless I've checked the option to make it do so.
any ideas?

I found this:
http://www.technodaddy.com/wp/2005/07/24/mac-tip-how-to-stop-tiger-from-half-dim ming-your-screen/
which I tried, and it worked. however, when I listed the current state (according to the directions) it was already at 0 (zero) but I did the command as directed and it doesn't dim any more.
cheers!

  • Display keeps dimming after 30 seconds, randomly!

After 30 seconds or so, the brightness will dim. I know this can be turned off (at least I think), but I can't figure out what is causing it. It also seems to be random, but that may just be my imagination.
How can I keep my display from dimming after 30 seconds? Thanks.

You might try to reset the SMC and/or PRAM.

  • How do you prevent screen from dimming while on power adapter?

I don't want the screen to dim while I'm connected to the power adapter. In the Energy Saver module, it is optimized for better performance, which sets the following parameters:
-set to sleep when inactive (never)
-put the display to sleep when computer inactive for 30 minutes
Nevertheless, after periods of inactivity, the screen will dim (not sleep). I can't seem to stop it from doing so. Any suggestions?

There are two things that will dim the screen - the Energy Saver and the Ambient Light Sensor.
In the Enerygy Saver panel select "Options" and then there is a check box that you need to uncheck. Since it is one the Options screen you may have missed it.
With respect to the Ambient Light Sensor, I think it should remember your settings once you set a brightness.

  • Prevent it from Dimming.

I like to watch TV shows off the internet on my Mac computer. How do i keep it from dimming after being inactive, not using keys or the mouse, for a few minutes?

You should change your Energy Saving Settings. To Do this go to:
    System Preferences>Energy Saver
There you should see two tabs, Sleep and Options.
In the Sleep tab, you can change the time of when you want your computer/display to sleep.
If you click the Options tab, under the section "Other Options" you should see a check box that say "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before sleep".
You can set your computer to sleep the display later, and uncheck the box as stated above, and it should give you more time.
Try it and tell me how it works.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down after periods of inactivity

I had a 6-year old MacBook Pro.  Besides just being a bit old and tired it would attempt to shut down after periods of inactivity.  I tried setting it to never sleep.  I tried the whole reset thing where you take the battery out and hold the power button for 5 seconds.  I bought new memory for it.  Eventually I used it as an excuse to buy a new machine.
Of course I copied my image over to the new MacBook.  Now I know its not a hardware issue because it still happens!
I also have other quirky issues (probably not related, but who knows).
I just cannot get my remote (or any apple remote to work).
I have an empty folder that I can't delete–it crashes the system.
Aperature hangs up all the time
VMware hangs up all the time
Firefox and Chrome both hang up
Sometimes I have to force quit Mail
Is this a good time to do a clean install?

Resetting the SMC doesn't seem to have done anything. The progress bar hasn't reached the end to shut down yet, but so far, it's displaying the same behavior.

  • I keep losing my wireless connection after periods of inactivity - any solution? I recently installed a new wireless router with improved range.

I recently installed a Netgear Wireless router for improved reception, but now my macbook loses connection through Airport after periods of inactivity.  We have another older Macbook in the house, and it never loses connection.  I never had this problem with the previous Linksys router, just limited range.  Any ideas what is causing this?  It's frustrating to have to frequently shout down and re-boot.  That so far is the only way I can re-connect.

Adjust the Wireless Settings on your linksys router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -

  • How to prevent screen from dimming/sleeping/etc when playing video?

When playing a video, how do you keep your monitor from dimming or sleeping, or turning the screen saver on in the middle of your video?
In Linux, using mplayer on X11, whenever a video would play, it would "disable DPMS" and the screen would stay on until the video was finished playing, just as if someone was in the middle of typing.
Is there a setting for this with the MacBook? I suppose it would have to be something global, meaning for QuickTime player, embedded WMV browser players, etc.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I only want to make changes for sleep and screen saver activation times for when I'm playing videos. I mean, if I'm watching an hour long video, I want to watch it without the screen changing 10 minutes into it.
However, I don't want to set my screen saver at 1 hour globally, as when I walk away from my text editor, it should sleep after 10 minutes or so.
Isn't there a way to set something so that the sleep/screen saver settings are disabled just when a video is being played?

  • How to keep my display from dimming

I use my imac as a tv, but the display dims after about 5 min of no activity. How can I make it so it never dims?

    Hello,
    Thanks for the tips everyone
    You're welcome
I found the check boxes in energy saver. . .I had the
"automatically reduce the brightness before sleep"
Box unchecked, but it still continues to dim after a
few minues of sitting there. I know this sholdn't be
as complicated as it has been. Is it pissible there
is a "glitch" in my system?
A little bit of research indicates that this is a bug in OS 10.4.x.
You might find this discussion interesting or helpful:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-213542.html
And, then there's a Terminal trick mentioned here:
    http://forums.macnn.com/58/imac-emac-and-mac-mini/308169/dimming-confusion/
Terminal is basically the Command Line interface to OS X's underlying Unix shell. You can find it in the Applications --> Utilities folder.
You can enter the command they mention directly at the prompt.
If you are up to tinkering, you could probably put together an Automator routine / workflow that you could activate more conveniently to run this command.
Or, a similar thing could be done with AppleScript.
Another idea you might try is disabling all power management settings (like sleep, etc.). And, see what happens. Perhaps that would lock it in. You could then sleep by pressing the power button one time quickly.
    I hope this helps.

  • Display automatically dims after a minute or so

    Hi,
My display dims after a couple of minutes of inactivity which can be quite annoying if you are viewing a movie etc, I cant find the setting which controls this, any clues people

Try System Preferences > Energy Saver.
If 'System Preferences' is not in your Dock you should find it in /Applications.

The facebook link is now working for the client...unfortunately the Paypal link does not.
After testing it on other Windows machines with no problems, I am starting to speculate that it is something unique to her setup. I'll have to keep testing I guess and see if any other errors come up.

  • Windows 7 installs its generic driver for the soundcard - cannot prevent it from doing so.

    Ave Maria!
Just bought a SB0886 and I cannot get Windows 7 not to install the generic HD audio drivers. I've tried chaning the system properties under the hardware device installation settings ,i.e., No let me choose what to do - didn't make any difference. As soon as I scan for hardware changes it automatically installs the windows drivers and there seems to be no way to prevent this from happening.
I need this sound card installed really urgently - please help.

No, that should not be cause of generic drivers. Which drivers are you trying to install? From CD or latest drivers from HP? If that doesn't work i guess you need to manual install the driver first. Therefore extract the package, go to device manager, open audio device, select to install new driver, 2nd choice to manally install them, then it depends you can try to let it search for the driver in the extracted folder or you really need to manually force it.

  • Cannot restore backup from iCloud after rolling back from iOS 8

So, after trying iOS 8 on my iPhone 4s I decided there was too much lag to apps opening, etc.
I downloaded the iOS 7.1.2 firmware and got it back, after backing up to iCloud.
Now all I get - after trying probably 250 times over the past day - is 'Cannot restore backup' from any of the backups from the past three days.
Is it being blocked because iCloud recognises it as not being the latest iOS?
    Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any help

I have the same problem with an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1.1, I'm trying to restore my iPhone with a backup made with iCloud (when I made the backup 2 weeks ago I had the same iOS version, 5.1.1).
The error message is: "Cannot restore backup" which is NOT listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4036
I need some help with this, thanks.

  • Author       "javax.sound.midi.InvalidMidiDataException: cannot get soundbank from stream" after java update

Not sure where to post this issue.
I am noticing this error since I did the Mac update. The Mac update included the java update. Right now the java version is 1.6.0_31. My Mac OS X version is 10.7.3. I am seeing the problem for all the soundfont files that I am trying to load. The error i get is.
javax.sound.midi.InvalidMidiDataException: cannot get soundbank from stream
         at javax.sound.midi.MidiSystem.getSoundbank(MidiSystem.java:565)

Below is a small program I built that shows the code.
    package myPackage;

                synth.loadAllInstruments(soundbank);
            } catch (Exception e)

I am not sure what the previous build of java I was on, but i know that it was a 1.6 version. Any ideas of what could have caused this?
    thanks

    No satisfactory progress!
I submitted a bug for this using the Apple bug reporter on 9th April (#11208868) and despite asking for an update, it has been completely ignored (even now). I'm not impressed.
I then issued a (paid for) Developer Technical Support issue which was credited back to my account a few days later with no explanation. When I asked why, I eventually got: "At this time DTS does not provide code-level support for Java"!
So, Apple are assuming to responsibility for this problem. I realise that Oracle is mostly responsible for Java but Apple took this crippled version (how much testing did they do?) and updated our customers' machines with it. This has effectively disabled a key feature of our product and has cost us damage to our company's reputation. Still Apple don't care and they rely on the fact that we are too small to sue them. You can see I'm not happy! I naively thought Apple would make some attempt to assist their developers.

  • Applications closing after period of inactivity

My applications are closing after a period of inactivity. I would appreciate any help. I'm on a 27inch iMac late 2013 running 10.10.1.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like multiple programs close on their own. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Set auto shut down for iPod touch after period of inactivity

I keep falling asleep with my iPod on. My old MP3 player had a setting where it automatically shutdown after a specified period of inactivity. Is there a download or setting of some sort that will make the ipod touch do the same?

I can't try it out for you now and don't know if it's on 2.x, but read p. 32 of the IPT manual under Sleep Timer. The option is under the Clock -> Timer on the Home menu. If the feature is still there...
