Cannot see thumbnails in Organize view in iPhoto 4

When I download new photos or look at one of my saved rolls, the pictures are all there but I cannot see them in the thumbnail view, only one at a time, so I cannot organize them into albums. This has happened since last October--prior to that, the thumbnails were there. Did I mess something up in another folder somewhere?

Hi, crablady, and welcome to Apple Discussions. It's very unlikely that you've caused your problem by meddling with any "other" folder. But if, back in October, you meddled with the contents of the iPhoto Library folder inside your Pictures folder when the iPhoto application wasn't open, that explains your problem.
Hold down the Shift and Option keys while starting iPhoto, and keep holding them down until you're asked whether you want to rebuild the library. Click "Yes", then click "Save".
This will create a new, rebuilt iPhoto Library_1 folder inside your Pictures folder. If it opens up properly in iPhoto, displaying things as you expect it to, you can trash the Original iPhoto Library folder and empty the trash to recover storage space. If the new library isn't right either, trash it instead of the original iPhoto Library folder, and post back here for further advice.
When iPhoto isn't running, it expects you to leave the contents of your iPhoto Library folder strictly alone. Everything in that folder is arranged precisely the way iPhoto needs it to be arranged, and any disturbance in there will throw things out of whack.

Cannot see thumbnails of PEF in bridge

I just installed PSE 8 for Mac on my iMac. When using bridge CS4 that installed with it, I can open my Pentax RAW files, but I cannot see thumbnails prior to that. I just see the PEF icon. Is there an update that didn't install? As it is, it's nearly useless.

Just a heads-up for others who might read this... I recently installed PS CS5, Lightroom 3, and ACR. At first when I opened Bridge or Lightroom I was not seeing thumbnails for my pentax .PEF files. Then I went to adobe updates and got the latest ACR plugin update, and it included my camera, Pentax K-5. That was the missing step and now thumbnails show up in all adobe views of my photos. They still don't show in Windows but that's fine.

Cannot see thumbnails in KM!!

Hi, I'm using EP 7 SP11
In some KM folders, after I've enabled the folder's thumbnail presentation, I can see some thumbnails and I cannot see some others (in this case, instead seeing the thumbnail, I only see the pic with the red cross, you know, that pic when a file is missing).
I checked the KM configuration about the Thumbnail repository, and the plugin, and they seem to be correct to me (The picture's formats are corrects too: jpg and gif).
Beside that, I've uploaded new jpg and gif pictures, but I see the same red cross... Is there any task scheduler to update the thumbnails every time I change one of them??
Could anybody please help me??

well, Maximum file size to generate thumbnail is setted (by default) at 8000 kByte, so I think that is not the problem.
I am doing tests with the thumbnail environment, so I am who is uploading and (hopefully) seeing the thumbnails on the folder. I have super admin role, and the test folder is setted with Everyone group and myself user as Full Control. So I suspect that is not the problem either.
I've explored the thumbnail repository using webfolders looking for the thumbnails, but there are neither images nor files inside it, only some empty subfolders.
Do you have another idea........?
Because I am running out of them!!

I cannot see thumbnails in iPhoto, only see dashes in the shape of the thumbnail

When I open Iphoto I do not see any thumbnails, only dashes surrounding the area where the thumbnails usually are. In Events I only see a dark grey square that appears to be raised, but no thumbnails. If I click on the blank I can see the photo. Have restored from Time Machine two times with the help of Apple Care rep. Still no thumbnails, can you help me?

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. This can take three or four goes to work.

I imported pictures and cannot see them in organizer media view.

The tutorial shows it very simply and I followed the instructions, but the pictures did not show up. I then tried to get the pictures from the finder file and it said they were already in my catalog. How do I see them?

View> Media Types. Make sure they are all checked.

Cannot see thumbnails or open pictures (even though info is listed)

Recently converted to iMac from PC. Generally very happy with Mac. Last pm, was burning CD's of photos. One month/event (2007-09) had more photos than could fit on one CD (even though only 640 MD listed in folder when burning a CD more MB's seem to be "created" and it was over 700 MB). Used iPhoto command to split event/month in two so could burn two separate CD's. Changed the name of each folder (i.e. 2007-09 a and b) then burned the CD's. Then used iPhoto command to merge folders back to one and changed name back to original name: 2007-09). Everything seemed fine until this AM when we opened iPhoto. The 2007-09 folder listed that it had all 272 pictures and 604MB's under information but no pictures could be seen on the event folder or when looking under photos. Each picture listed all the correct info but no image can be seen and when picture is opened it just showed a grey circle with "!"
I was able to restore the photos from the last saved group from last pm using browse backups/time machine. However, I assume that somehow the actual picture files or pathway was corrupted from the steps I used last pm when trying to set things up to burn a CD. In many years of Windows PC picture and PICASA program use, something like this never happened. While the ability to restore using Time Machine was great and cool, it is very concerning that our original pictures could so easily be "lost" and I assume this represents some flaw in the iPhoto program.
Did I do something wrong or is there a flaw in iPhoto that easily leads to file corruption? How do I prevent this from happening again?

So how (and where) did you do this?
Each picture listed all the correct info but no image can be seen and when picture is opened it just showed a grey circle with "!"
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. And yes, the most common way to do this is to change the path to the file, or rename some element in the path.
The pics should be safe and sound in the iPhoto Package File.

Cannot see still pictures in iMovie from iPhoto. Please help!!!

I had a few pictures sent to me via e-mail and I was able to download and open them through iPhoto. However, I am unable to view them with my other iPhoto pictures in iMovie. Have you ever heard of this happening and do you know how I can get the photos to appear in iMovie?

I'm not sure about the viewing them but I know if your pictures come out blurry, transfer them by USB. Maybe you could try that with the pictures you sent via e-mail because email kind of messes up the pictures.

If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
In a version 11.0.1.12, the Display duplicates command is now in the View menu (rather than in the File menu as per earlier versions)

Cannot see Collections and Years views in new Yosemite Photos app

Hi there,
I've just upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite to get the new Photos app, and so far it hasn't quite been the experience I was hoping for. My current issue is that nowhere can I see the "Collections" and "Years" views that were so prominent in the marketing material - just "Moments". There doesn't seem to be any way to toggle, even via the Sidebar.
If I look in Activity Monitor, I can see that Photos is using a lot of CPU (and has been for 12+ hours) - is it doing some sort of initial indexing before it can show me those other views?

I cannot see the 'File, Edit, View...Help' options at the top of Firefox. How can I restore these?

I do not know how to get access to the 'File, Edit, Veiw...' etc. otions which I do not have in my version of Firefox. I have tried Firefox support but nothing seems to come up. What should I do?

Cannot see photos after upgrading to iPhoto 9.1.3

I upgraded my iPhoto to 9.1.3 and now I cannot see some of my photos. iPhoto indicates the photos are there, but all I see is blank dotted frames where thumbnails should be. When I click on one of the photos I get a gray out frame with an exclamation in the middle. I tried rebuilding the library/thumbnails, extracting using iPhoto LIbrary Manager, checking disk permissions/repairing in Utilties, etc. I tried every suggestions and recommendations I found on the net, but I still cannot see those files. I regret deleting them off my camera disc. These are the only masters I have. So I can't copy them back into the library. If anyone know how I can retrieve these files, please let me know. I also went back in my Time Machine and the same files are all empty gray frames. All I know is that the files were "visible" before the upgrade and now I can't see them after the upgrade. Any suggestions?

Hi - yes I did that last night and unlike rebuilding via control option route, IPLM did not rebuild those files. It stated they do not exist. I double checked by "Show Package Contents" and the master of those files is no longer there. My next move is to go into Time Machine and see if I can restore the library from when the files were still in there (though unseen by iPhoto) and hope the master are still recoverable. If that doesn't work, then I'm at the point of accepting that perhaps I may have lost 51 photos (1 event) during this upgrade. I'm still open to suggestions though.

Attaching Explorer File Name in Organizer View

In PS5 is there any way to get the explorer file name to appear with each thumbnail in organizer view ?

In Organizer Preferences (General), check Show File Names in Details. Then
in Folder View, check Details and adjust the size of the thumbnails so that
four or less are displayed in one row.

I cannot see my photos in iphoto library - I tried to restore with Time Machine and that doubled the number of photos (copies) but I still cannot see the images - the events are there but no thumbnails although the number of pics per event is correct...

Can someone help me see my pictures again in iphoto? 3 weeks ago while uploading a video from iphoto to Facebook, my events thumbnails all disappeared and were replaced by black squares - the event names and number of pics in each remain but when I click on the event, I only get squares where the pics should be - when I click those squares, I get a square with a triangle and an exclamation mark in middle.
Apple had emailed me about defective disks in iMacs so I took mine to the Apple Store and they replaced my HD then reinstalled from my backup via Time Machine - I still cannot see my pics! I tried to reinstall from an earlier Time Machine date - that copied everything and now my HD has double the amount of data but I still cannot see my pictures!
I would be thankful for any guidance on how to retrieve my pictures...

iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library

IPhoto 7.1.3: Can view and enlarge photos but cannot see them in edit mode

When selecting and attempting to edit photos, the photo does not appear in the "edit" window below the thumbnails. This "edit" window remains blank. Edit functions appear operable but I cannot see what is happening to the photo until the edit has been made and shows up in the thumbnails. Anyone have a similar issue or suggestion?

The procedure for creating and populating a new library:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
If the problem is persisting into a new library - how big is your HD and how much free space on it?
