Cannot view pdf in safari

Since I installed Adobe Reader X, I cannot view pdf files in safari. If I click on a .pdf file on my hard drive, it will open up with Preview and I can view it. But before I used to be able to see pdf files in the safari browser. But now the browser is black and the url references a pdf file.

Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Cannot view PDFs in Safari (5.1.10)

    Hi there,
For some reason I can't view PDFs in Safari. I just updated my Adobe Reader to version 11 because I went to look at a file on a website and got this screen (below) instead of the actual file. I've already searched their forums and these ones and tried moving and trashing the PDF plug-ins in the "/Library/Internet Plug-ins" folder and there's nothing that says PDF in my "~/Library/Internet Plug-ins" folder.
I'm operating on OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and using Safari 5.1.10.

I would go to Macintosh HD - Library - Internet Plugins and look for any PDF plug-in (like Adobe) and disable it by moving it to a subdirectory like Disabled Plugins. Safari is able to render PDF's by itself. You need to empty the cache of Safari and restart it. Perhaps this will help. You can always put the plugins back, so it will not harm.

  • Fix the: Cannot view PDFs in Safari Window after installing CS3

    All,
To fix the problem of displaying PDF files in Safari after installing CS3.
Open Adobe Acrobat 8 and then go to the preference menu, on the left hand side look for internet, select this option and then UNCHECK the options to use to open PDFs.
Apply and quit Adobe Acrobat 8. Quit Safari if still running and then reopen. What Safari does now is use the default settings and will open the PDFs as before.

If it's not essential that the Adobe plugin handles PDF files then try turning off the plugin support via Adobe Reader preferences -> Internet -> Unselect the option to handle PDF files (sorry, I'm not on a Mac to quote the exact text but it's words to that effect).
If no other plugins handle PDFs, Safari should pick up the slack and handle them natively.

  • I cannot view pdf files on Safari, instead they download and open in viewer. How do I change this?

Does anyone have a solution for this???
"I cannot view pdf files on Safari, instead they download and open in viewer. How do I change this?"

Back up all data. Please read this whole message before doing anything, so you'll know what to expect.
Open Safari's preferences dialog and make notes of everything you would need to recreate the basic settings, such as your home page. That includes the settings of Safari extensions, if any are installed.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste (command-V) into the box that opens and press return. A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open.
Launch Safari. Its settings will have reverted to what they were they first time you launched it. Your bookmarks, history, and AutoFill data will be preserved.
Test. If Safari now works as expected, recreate its settings and delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put the file you moved back where it was, overwriting the newer one created in its place. Post your results.

  • Cannot View PDF's in Safari

Whenever I try to open a pdf through Safari, there is a grey screen. How do I fix this so I can view the pdf files. Preview is my default pdf reader and I just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion.

I'm not trying to convince you! I accept that Adobe's products have value for certain professionals, and given that Acrobat and the pdf format is one of their specialities, I'd be surprised if despite all the development and investment they put into it their product had no advantages over Apple's give-away reader.
Adobe Reader is free as well - as are the plugins that come with it. I just opened a medical study PDF in Preview - none of the actions worked.
I just don't see how a sales pitch for Adobe is relevant to the OPs problem. You don't need an Adobe plug-in to view pdfs in Safari. I've been getting by without it for years (I just checked and 2010 was the last date I had and Adobe plug-in installed). More to the point, the OPs problem is almost certainly caused by an old Adobe plug-in that needs to be removed.
It's not a sales pitch - it's the correct answer to the OPs problem. If he/she wants to view PDF files inline using Safari, they will need to install Adobe Reader, which also installs the "AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin". If he/she doesn't want the content displayed correctly, then they can leave the plugin alone.
    It's that simple.

  • Cannot view PDFs with Reader (11.0.06) on Safari

    Hi there,
For some reason I can't view PDFs in Safari. I just updated my Adobe Reader to version 11 because I went to look at a file on a website and got this screen (below) instead of the actual file. I've already tried moving and trashing the plug-ins in my "/Library/Internet Plug-ins" folder and there's nothing that says PDF in my "~/Library/Internet Plug-ins" folder.
Any advice for fixing this is much appreciated.
I'm operating on a Macbook Pro, OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and using Safari 5.1.10.

    Hi Mike,
As I said above, I've already tried moving and deleting both of those files. I had a proper install and I'm aware of the correct Library folder, but some posts related to this problem said to check your user library folder, too, so I did. The user library folder had nothing related in it, but the correct Library folder had both plug-in files.
    To be clearer,
First, I tried moving one and both of them to a new sub folder (as one post suggested) in Library called "Internet Plug-ins Disabled" which did not work,
Next, I tried deleting one and keeping the other and vice versa,
And finally, I tried moving both to the trash and completely deleting both plug-ins but that hasn't worked and I keep getting the same screen as I posted before.

  • Cannot Open PDF in Safari

    Can someone please help.
    I cannot open PDF files through Safari. I've read some of the other comments on the same/similar issue and I have tried those steps and have been unsuccessful. I still cannot view PDF files through Safari, in fact, the Preview doesn't even open. When it worked the preview icon would pop up in the tool bar at the bottom of my Mac Book, but it no longer does that. Here is what I've tried;
Upgrading my Adobe, even though I know you don't need it for Mac.
Removed Adobe from applications and deleted.
Went to Library and internet plug ins and there is nothing in that folder.
Went to internet preferences and un clicked enable plug ins.
Not quite sure what else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced.

    Hi Roxana ..
Which Mac OS X do you have installed and which version of Safari ??
Upgrading my Adobe, even though I know you don't need it for Mac.
You do if you want to use Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF files.
Went to Library and internet plug ins and there is nothing in that folder.
There are two libraries. One is root  /Library
The other denotes your Home folder   ~/Library  (the Tilde character represents your Home folder)
    Go to  /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
If you see the Adobe PDF browser plugin or just PDF Browser plugin, move that to the Trash. Quit then relaunch Safari. Try a PDF file.

  • Cannot view pdf files in browser

brand new imac cannot view PDF files in browser but the PDF's can be viewed if downloaded. All the data in the PDF online have question marks instead, maybe a missing font issue?

Have Adobe Reader installed? If so, disable the AdobePDFViewer.plugin resident in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins., restart, and try again. For font-associated issues, peruse Font Management in OS X

    Weird HUH? any suggestions?

the application is safari. - in this case is it safari thats displaying the PDF or a plug in. at this point i dont have any 3rd party PDF plug ins.
the link is on a website, i have not downloaded the PDF. When I click on the link, another safai window opens and it displays the PDF. I close the window, and click on the same link. When that happens, the gibberish appears.
....at this point...im maybe thinking that its a problem with the web server? This doesnt happen all the time.
Thanks so much for you interest in my problem. =)

Have to use Windows 7 at work. Fortunately, I can at least use Safari as my browser. Unfortunately, I can't view pdfs in Safari for Windows but I can with FireFox and IE. Any way to resolve?

What happens when you try to view a pdf file on Safari? In my experience Safari has never worked well in Windows. Use a browser you know works.
Did you check for a PDF reader plugin for Safari?

When you say that you have the same problem, do you mean that you are:
    1. Not able to download Adobe Reader;
    2. cannot view a PDF file;
    3. or what?
Please be a little more descriptive of your particular problem or, better yet, start your own thread and clearly indicate which problem(s) you're having and what you have done, thus far, to correct the problem(s).

  • I cannot view pdf files with free download from Adobe. Simple

I cannot view pdf documents, since recent download of Adobe Reader. Click pdf doc, Adobe opens, but bleeps if I click anywhere on the screen, then closes.
Recently I tried to look at my Amex Statement online, but Adobe wouldn't show the file.
I downloaded the Statement, but every attempt to view, is futile!!!!!!
Today, I downloaded, Assistant and signed in. Also Adobe Air. But still the Statement cannot be viewed.
If this is a free download, why change the setup so the damn thing doesn't work, when downloaded. I don't want to view the "World", just 1 document. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (Words of some intellect, I would say) (Please take note)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Use the Adobe Cleaner to completely uninstall Reader. http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then, download the full offline installer here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ and run it to reinstall a good working copy of Reader.
