Canon XF 305 media into FCP problem

Hello
I used two XF 305s on a shoot yesterday and then ingested the files with Log and Transfer into FCP. Worked fine with the 3 cards from one camera but Log and Transfer didn't see any of the 3 cards recorded on the second camera. I tried to add them manually but got an error message saying the folder contained unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. The cards are viewable in Canon XF Utility and seemed to have the same properties as the 3 cards that worked.  I tried making a backup and transferring that in FCP but same error message. The only way i can get them into FCP is to export to MXF and bring them in with XDCam transfer which doesn't seem to support anything bigger than 2 gb and the audio is out of sync. Frustrating day!!! I'd be SO grateful for any answers or guidance!
Thanks
Deborah

Hi Deborah,
I don't mean shutter speed, I mean framerate, two different things. If you shot 50 frames per second (50p) as opposed to 25 frames per second which is 50i, Log and transfer won't recognise the clips.

  • Can't import Media into FCP X

In the last week or two when I try to import media into FCP X I end up with a very dark and locked import screen.  The only way I can recover is to force quit FCP X.  It doesn't always happen but it is getting more and more frequent.
I have not updated to Marverik and I'm running the latest version of FCP X on the same iMac I have used since installation.
Any suggestions beacuse it really is starting to beome very, very frustrating.
    Thanks

They system is hanging up, waiting on some command to finish, which is not able to.  So let's look at ways to fix this.  Becasue you never want to do an upgrade to fix problems.  Only upgrade a proerly working system.  Otherwise, you may just be hauling old problems into a new envoronment, and making things worse.  I've seen it a lot over the years.
First, verify that all of your drives have at least 15% of their total capacity as free space.  Not enough free space on any dirve can cause similar odd behaviors.
Second, you need to do some housee cleaning.  Start by downloading and running the free application "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (dot com).  Use it to trash the FCPX preference files.  It is easy and safe to you.  None of your media or projects will be touched.  After that, run Disk Utility to "Repair" all of your drives (ignore "Verify", total waste of time).
If none of that helps, I'd recommand you download the free application "FCS Remover" from Digital Rebellion.  Use it to uninstall FCPX.  Some folks say to just move the app from the Applications folder to the Trash.  That leaves a bunch of other files hanging around that could be bad.  Use this app.  Once you've uninstalled FCPX, launch the App Store, go to the Purchases section, and FCPX will have an "Install" button.  Reinstall a fresh copy, see if that helps.

  • Importing Avid Media into FCP

I am taking media from an Avid Adrenaline system and want to bring it into FCP to cut. However, the disk w/Avid QTs won't appear on my desktop. It plays fine on the Windows-based Avid (XP, I believe), but my Mac won't see it. I've tried downloading Avid codecs and putting them in my Quicktime Library as recommended by the Avid website, but that doesn't seem to work. I've been told I should try exporting out of Avid using Sorenson or H.264 codecs. Anyone with experience on this so I quit wasting time?
    Thanks
    IMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) FCP 5.0.1

Actually, my experience was that it was QT 7.1.6 that broke the version of the Avid codec I had been using before, not a particular FCP update. I have not tried the codec linked to earlier in this thread.
I have noticed a unique color shift in both luma and chroma when importing Avid codec clips. It takes two color correction filters to correct for this, but I have saved this pair as favorites, and can apply them at the end of the edit.
I would much rather import the clips than recapture, as we're talking about days of recapturing, as opposed to a couple hours of importing. If I can get the codec supported, and I know how to correct for the color shift, I have no qualms about using the Avid media. My question has more to do with whether I will be able to see individual clips in the finder to attempt to import, or whether the media files will be in some format QT and FCP will not recognize, and if so, whether there is anything I can do about it. I don't expect any of the Avid logging info to come along, and I know that even if I were to have Avid editor export a batch list, a reconnect would likely be impossible, and I'd be looking at recapture.
If it were a question of simply creating new QT wrappers on the files, we'll be up against another shortcoming of FCP - the Batch Export process does nont allow the creation of reference movies...
Anyone know about what the Avid media folders look like in the finder?
    Thanks much -
    Max

  • Mixed format media into FCP X and out to DVD

    Hello FCP users,
Could someone please advise me on the following.
I want to combine and edit two movies (one of which is only showing a clip on the second screenshot)) with different formats (as shown below) in Final Cut Pro X and after that export the result to DVD, to be watched on a HD TV. (PAL)
I've used MPEG Streamclip to convert both to ProRes 422, 720x576 for import into FCP X, but is that the best option for getting the best results?
    Thank you.

Both are codecs FCP X will recognize.  Just import them.  If your Mac is slow with them, Optimize them with FCP X.  When you create your Project, click the Custom button and chose the PAL settings you'd like.  Edit away.  No reason to make everything the same, but it will releave strain on your iMac.  And no reason to use anything but FCP X to Optimize them.

  • Canon XF 305 Media

It appears that support has been cut off from the Canon XF series cameras. In FCP 7 its no problem to Log and Transfer footage from the CF Cards they use in NATIVE format, so I dont have to worry about transcoding..just have to copy my files over. Now, FCP X wont even recognize the CF card as anything valid.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Am I missing something. And, no, hooking up the camera directly and transferring from there isnt any better.

    Thanks,
I appreciate the answer, but I actually work in live events where were pumping out DVDs for sale of the event within 90 min of it occurring..and transcoding is not an option for the footage..one of the main reasons we got the camera was the superfast workflow with FCP (7) and Native support from apple/canon so we just had to import the files form the card, and edit them natively, add our chapter markers, export/compress, and send to DVD SP (which reads our markers from editing for the absolute necessity of a CHAPTER MENU).
Apple really jumped the gun on this release..it should have been a public beta for user feedback at best..

  • Field dominance upon import into fcp problem

having changed the project setttings in livetype to comply to pal video with lower field dominance so that i can use it in my dv-based projects, i've tried both to open the livetype project directly into final cut pro and also to render the movie in livetype and import that into final cut pro.
in both cases, fcp sets field dominace to upper field.
on the cinema display lcd screen that doesn't seem to make any difference, but surprises lurke when outputting to dvd ....
in an attempt to bypass the problem i've changed project settings to 'none' and rendered the movie again.
in this case too, fcp insists the imported movie is upper field dominant...
is this an annomality in fcp's import routines and does it assume that all pal video that is not dv is upperfield dominant or is there a setting in eithere program that can fix this problem?
    livetype 2.02
    fcp 5.0.x
    thanks

Is your drive formatted macosextended?  Can you edit bars and tone into a new sequence?  What happens if you duplicate an existing sequence, select all and delete?  Can you then edit into this sequence?
Have you tried deleting your fcp preferences?  Get preference manager from www.digitalrebellion.com to do this.
Have you installed or updated any new software or hardware on your system recently?

  • Hi8 capture into FCP problem...

FCP is not recognizing the camcorder I have connected to the computer in order capture Hi8 tapes. I believe that this setup should work, but perhaps someone knows more about it.
I have a digital 8mm camcorder that plays hi8 tapes and has a firewire connection. It is the smallest one, the 4pin, so I bought a 4pin to 9pin adapter to put it through the firewire 800 port on my MacPro.
I set the Capture Preset to DV NTSC Basic, and I clicked non-controllable device in the Capture window. Actually, once it saw it and captured an audio file with nothing on it I have tried all those old tricks like shutting down the computer and starting up again with the camera on. I've tried two different ports; the back and front.
I guess the problem could be the adaptor; but I want to check all the settings/presets against those that people have used successfully. If anyone has experience with this, please tell me how you did it!
    Thanks!

No, but I can use Google.
Don't use DV NTSC Basic. Use regular DV NTSC, unless your audio is 32k, in which you'll have to make a 32k DV NTSC preset. There might be a problem with the FW800 connector. Quite a few people are reporting problems with these cables. Definitely use the rear FireWire port. Do you have any other devices connected?

  • Cannot import video files into FCP

Every time I try to import a file (.mov , .mpg , .m4v) FCP gives me an error message reading "File Error: File Unknown" If I try and import through the drop down menu, the error reads "File Error: 1 file(s) Recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown"
The only file that seems to work is a .avi
This started happening when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    Please Help

    Here's a couple solutions ...
I had this problem this week as well. Suddenly I couldn't import any type of media into FCP. After trying a few things like reinstalling FCS 2 and talking to other people, I called up Apple Support. They walked me through a few more efforts to solve the issue or at least get an idea of what causes the problem.
What we discovered is that when I created a new user profile for my iMac and logged into that profile, everything in Final Cut worked fine. I could import media with no problem. THUS, the issue seems to be connected to my computer profile. So I was presented with two options:
Option 1: Create a new user profile and either migrate all my content over to it or simply edit from that profile.
Option 2: The Nuclear Option. Back up all your content you don't want to loose, pop in your OS X disk, restart the computer holding C, and select the option to erase your hard drive and install OS X from scratch.
I figured that after two years of a **** of a lot of editing and other work on this computer, it was time to just go for the Nuclear option and obliterate everything off of it and start fresh. Takes a while to do, but I've just confirmed that I'm able to import media again in FCP.
So, sadly it's not a real simple option like deleting your preference files, like other FCP issues, but there is way to clear up this issue. The important thing to note here is that reinstalling FCP didn't work for me, and doing an Archive Install of OS X which still keeps my user profile essentially intact also keep the problem intact and solves nothing.
Now, if you have to get a project your editing out the door right away, just create a new profile and get busy editing. But once that project is done, or if you have the time right now, I think the best option is the Nuclear Option. Back your stuff up and then clear your hard drive out and start anew.
I hope that helps guys. I know how crazy I was going not finding anything on a forum to help me out.

  • Problem importing footage from Canon XF305 into fcp

I have footage from a card having recorded on a Canon XF305. I literally dragged and dropped card onto my desktop making sure not to change any file names. I am now trying to import this footage from my desktop into fcp. I have downloaded the canon fcp plugin but everytime I try to import the footage using the canon plugin preferences I get an error message which reads... "AA0229" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media. Can anyone help me??

    Hi there,
I've had no joy with this. Have tried everything. Just can't get footage into fcp any way I try. I have downloaded the plugin but I still get the same error message. "AA0229" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
My work flow is as follows.
Open final cut pro. Go to log and transfer. Go to preferences within the log and transfer window and click on Canon XF plugin. Then go to import. Click on file on my desktop which is labeled as CLIPS001. Then error message comes up.
Memory card was dropped directly onto my laptop and onto a back up drive without changing any file names. Was thinking this would be straight forward.
Any help will be hugely appreciated. Am I missing something simple?

  • Can't import mxf-files (Canon XF100) into FCP 10.0.8 after Mavericks

    Hello
It's not possible for me, to import mxf-files into FCP.
I haven't yoused FCP for a couple of days, but today I could not import files from my Canon XF100, so i think the problems came with Mavericks??
Does any of you have same problems?
    What to do?
    Kind regards
    Thomas (Denmark)

    Hi Russ -
I downloaded the utility and driver from here:
    http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/blogs/2012/20120223_xf_utilities_and_pl ugin_updates.shtml
But after looking around realized it isn't updated for Mavericks yet. I was only given two files and both weren't in any sort of directory structure- here is a screenshot.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • What Compressor is needed for files from a Canon T2i on it's way into FCP?

    Hey internet,
I bought a Canon T2i and Final Cut Pro hoping to start off a great little film making project.
I shot a bunch of footage in 1080/720 @60fps. (hoping to get some nice slowed down shots in the future..)
The problem is, now I'm seeing all this talk about Conversion/Compression/Codecs etc. And when I'm looking at my footage (drag and dropped) into FCP it's weird sizes and takes FOREVER to render/export!
All I want is to film, import, edit, export, show to friends/family a great looking video..
What am I missing? Please give me some tips on at least where to start.
    Thanks.

<rant>I would say this is something to figure out way before you start shooting, or maybe even before buying the camera. Post-production with these DSLRs is way more complex than most people think.
Learn your tools and set up workflows before you start projects like this, or you will always end up fooling around in post-production.
One of the issues with FCP, is that you mostly can drag and drop video into the timeline, even though FCP really does not supports it properly.
Shooting everything at 60p is not really a good idea, unless you really know what you are doing. You should have planned on what shots you wanted in slow motion, and shot the rest at 24p or 30p.</rant>
On the bright side, learning from mistakes is always good
Tips 1: What you want to do before bringing DSLR video into FCP is to transcode it to ProRes 422. Try to start by using the preset called *Apple ProRes 422* in Compressor.
Tips 2: Search for DSLR FCP workflow on Google.

  • Convert Media 100 bin into FCP 4.5?

OK, this is a long shot but here it goes. I have an old project created on a Media 100. I now work with FCP 4.5. Put simply, I need to bring two media bins created in Media 100 into my FCP system so I can redigitize the media. This would save me a lot of time re-logging. I do not have access to the old Media 100 system. Is there any conversion program or method I can use to convert the bin into an EDL or import it directly into FCP? I have tried importing the bin, but of course it would not read the file.
    Thanks for any help.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I figured it might be a hopeless cause but I thought I'd try anyway. I have tried to open the bins in word/text edit/etc but have come up empty. Actually, text edit opened it so that I could at least decipher some in/out points but it was such a gargled mess that it was useless.
When I was making the transfer to FCP and still had access to my Media 100, I was able to place the raw clips in a timeline and export an edl from Media 100. Then, importing the edl into FCP worked great. It just didn't bring in my tape #'s, but my timecode was good so it was no problem.
Gary, I'll email you the two bins. If you could make them into EDL's, I would owe you one. Thanks.

  • PROBLEM SOLVED "export clips from Color back into FCP & add transition"

If I have two clips that you cannot place a transition in between here is the only thing that worked for me.
I discovered this problem after I exported my movie clips from FCP 6 to Color and imported the color corrected files from Color back into FCP 6. I could no longer add transitions to any of my clips unless I made the following changes.
    1. 1st check to see if the video clip has an audio track underneath it. If they are not linked Select the audio and the video track to be linked, hit Command "L" and you will see an underline under the audio and video name to show that they are now linked. Do the same for the adjoining video and audio track.
    2. Next select all of the clips after the video clip you just selected by typing "tttt" this changes to the "Select All Tracks Forward Tool". Click on the track after the video track you just linked and it will select all of the tracks thereafter. Hit the "A" button to change back to the selection tool and move all of the selected tracks away from the previous video/audio track.
    3. Next type "RR" this will change to the "Ripple" tool. Now click on end of the video track on the previous video clip and type -15 (for negative 15 frames). Then click on the beginning of other video clip to the right that you linked and type +15 (for plus 15 frames).
    4. Type "tttt" to change back to the "Select All Tracks Forward Tool" the hit the "A" button to change back to the selection tool and drag all tracks back together again.
    5. You may then drag and drop your transition in between both video clips.
I hope this helps someone...this is the only thing that worked for me!!!
    Number1talent

I am working with mostly DVCPro ftg, with a few clips in MiniDV.  I did have roughly 10 clips with speed changes, but they exported fine two weeks ago, when I did this the first time.  (Actually, it didn't keep the speed changes, but it did export with media to FCP).
The clips do have reel numbers and seem to be of the right length per clip but there's just no picture and no assoicated media with which to relink the clip.
    I'm on Color 1.5.3
Any possible ideas?  Thank you for your help...

  • I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists iPhoto Library as GRAY, and will not let me access it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.

    Like the title says...
I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists 'iPhoto Library' as GRAY, and will not let me select it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.
I have also tried from the iphoto side, to export the videos or share them to final cut.  I have had no luck.
I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible.  I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'
    Thank You for the Help

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?
All the footage, and all the libraries to all programs, or on a new pegasus 12tb raid 5 setup fyi.

  • Problem with importing a Motion project into FCP if it uses a Boris filter

Had an odd and highly frustrating experience. Was using a Boris Continuum filter (the posterizing one) on the background of a Motion project (was using it to age a background of a brick wall to age it and give it a more 'nighttime' look).
When I imported the file into FCP to use as an intro there, the background disappeared entirely. After an hour of troubleshooting, finally figured out that it was the Boris filter that was causing the problem (it also was probably responsible for the random crashing of FCP I was experiencing), as when I disabled the filter and re-saved the project, it worked beautifully.
Is this a 'normal' problem when using Boris filters? Do I have to export every Motion project into a Quicktime file before importing it to FCP (and possibly DVDSP) if it uses a Boris filter?

Thanks! Now the frustrating thing is that the client doesn't want to use what I created after all...bah humbug
It's not the RAM (which is either 8GB or 16....not sure on that computer). Got an e-mail from Boris Support that implied that this will happen all the time...that you have to export all projects before you use them in FCP or DVDSP or the Continuum filters won't work (loved how the support person suggested that I just use the filter in FCP...which defeats the purpose of creating something in Motion! But I digress...) Told me I had to buy a $500 program called Automatic Duck to get things to import properly...and that Boris filters won't work with the latest upgrade of FCP, btw.
