Canopus adv-110 as A/V output with Final Cut X

Hi everyone
I have started to use Final Cut X for a small project and previously with earlier versions of Final Cut I could use my Canopus 110 as way to preview playback on my monitor from the Mac Pro. The Canopus was connected to the Mac via firewire and I could select this as an output device and monitor on my external TV/Monitor.
I have been unable to get this to work on Final Cut X and in looking at the on-line help under A/V output I saw the following statement
'A/V output is available only with OS X Lion v10.7.2 or later and requires compatible third-party video interface hardware and software. FireWire DV devices are not supported'
I assume the I cannot use my Canopus ADV-110 to playback the time line to my external monitor since it is a firwire connected device. If this is so, what type of hardware is supported? Is is thunderbolt or USB etc. Just seems strange that firewire not supported. Maybe I am misunderstanding?
I have the latest OD X Lion on my machine.
If this is true, can anyone recommend an affordable prosumer hardware interface that will allow me to playback final cut X time-line to an external monitor?
Thanks in advance
Allan

You cannot use the Canopus ADV-110 to view output from FCP x.  AJA, Black Magic and Matrox are as far as I know, the only manufacturers of suitable output hardware.  Of these the BM Intensity Pto is probably the least expensive.  However, note that all drivers, Apple and third party, are presently Beta software and therefore not entirely bomb proof.  I have used both the Matrox MX02 Mini and Black Magic Intensity Pro with moderate success, but both can exhibit play back jerkiness and the occassional hang up.  Usually, the jerkiness can be overcome by stopping playback then either forward or reverse frame by frame  using the forward or reverse keyboard arrows until the video monitor catches up, then go into play.
Hope that helps.
Geoff.

Non riesco a attivare A/V Output con Final Cut Pro 10.1.1 e Mavericch 10.9.2

First, Mavericks is an OS X version, not an iOS version.  iOS is for mobile devices, OS X is for Macs.
Second, what is the specific input/output device your Mac is using for A/V Output to access?
Have you gone into the Preferences, into the Playback section, and in the "A/V Ouput" menu, what device A/V Output is suppoed to use?  Then, go to the Window menu and turn on A/V Output.
If none of that works, you have a compatability issue.  Verify with the manufacturer you have the latest drivers, and that it is compatible with OS X Mavericks 10.2.9 and FCPX 10.1.1.

  • Capture devices that work with Final Cut Express

Would any one out there be able to recomend a reasonably priced video capture device that works with FCE other than a video camera? I want to input video and audio from VHS and DVD. I also want to input Audio from cassette and CD.
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I am in a similar situation. All I can say is that the ADS Pyro AV Link works well with iMovie but not with Final Cut Express or Pro so I returned it.
I am waiting for a DataVideo DAC 100, Their web site gives specific instructions as how to use the DAC with FCP so I am hopefull that it will work with FCE.

The Canopus ADVC 110 has also been recommended on this forum.

  • How to get crisp jpeg images for slideshow on a Mac with Final Cut?

Hi, I imported a large number of jpegs into Final Cut Pro and when I export to Quicktime Movie (not modifying the sequence size or settings I notice the quality of the jpeg images looks rather washed out and a bit fuzzy. The image dimensions of the jpegs are actually 2848 x 4272 and I was originally using a sequence setting of 720 by 480 (which scaled the images to about 12%). I experimented with doubling the sequence setting to 1440 by 960 and scaled the images to about 25.5% - still a bit washed out look.
Basically this will be a presentation on a computer and output via projection. Looking for best possible and clearest photos. I experimented with iPhoto and when you play a slideshow it looks very crisp - this is what I am aiming for. When I export using the Slideshow export at the largest size 640 by 480 in iPhoto to quicktime - the quality seriously deteriorates.
What would be the best way to maintain the crispness of the photos in Final Cut for an export to Quicktime that would be show on a Mac via a projector? Thank you

Hi Nick, I do see information on creating a slideshow with Quicktime at: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/slideshow.html
however it appears Quicktime X removed that capability. There is no 'open image sequence' option from the File menu in Quicktime X.
If I do end up sticking with Final Cut - would you recommend any codec and/or dimension size that would result in the best quality or the most crisp image? I also need a few fade in's and out's on various parts - I don't believe I would have the control without Final Cut.
Would resizing the image files in Photoshop to 1920 pixels by 1280 before importing them into Final Cut result in crisper images? Thanks.

  • Creating 1080p Blu-Ray with Final Cut Pro 10.0.7?

The latest version of Final Cut Pro (Vers 10.0.7) seems to share to Blu-Ray disk only at 720p resolution (1280X720) - not 1080P (1920X1200).  I know you can always use Compressor to create a 1080p Blu-Ray, but is there any way to create a 1080p Blu-Ray disk directly with Final Cut Pro?  It seems to me I was able to do this with earlier versions of Final Cut Pro X.

If you do a 1080 project @24fps or 29.97fps, FCPX will output 1080 frame size using the Blu-Ray settings. If you use Share >BD for either 720 or 1080 @ 60fps, it will choose the 720 resolution.
I have no idea whether this was always the case.

  • Are microsoft movie maker files compatible with final cut pro files?

I would like to know if microsoft movie maker files are compatible with Final Cut Pro?
    Thanks,
    elemir

depends on how you're outputting. .wmv I don't think so.That's pretty much a dead end format.  mp4 might be, but i'm not sure if movie maker outputs them. .avi might be, depends on the codec used.
Avoid .wmv, apple products don't play well with that format (never have) and aim for some other output type. Then on your mac, if you don't already have it, if you don't already have it, get the free converter mpegstreamclip and see if it can convert your movie maker output into something final cut will input. DV files are good, as are .mov files.

  • Problems with Final Cut Pro HD 4.5

    Hi gang
I posted something similar a few weeks ago about this problem, and since then, my problem has only gotten worse. Here's the basics: I'm using FCP HD 4.5 on a MacBook (apparently that's trouble right there.) I did the thing where you change something in the properties to get around the required video card. So the program works, right? Sure.
I shot some video on a Cannon XL-2 (which I thought was Hi-Def, but apparently it's not.) The camera was rented, so I obviously don't have it anymore. I have been trying to import the video on to my laptop, via an external hard drive (like 30GB) using a Sony Handycam (borrowed from my office.)
The first problem was that there was no audio on the tapes shot on the XL. I'm going to go ahead and say that some how....that was my fault. Not sure how, but I'll take the blame. Now, I'm trying to import this silent footage, and I keep running into a problem, and that problem is this: the important stops after a few seconds, and there's a message about how there is some kind of error on the tape. This is super frustrating, and I think when I was working on this the other night, the tape eventually just stopped showing video, even though something is obviously there.
Now, here's a few questions. Is it because I'm using a somewhat small external hard drive that may not have enough space on it to keep processing the video? Is it because I'm using a different camera to try and get this video? Should I try using another Cannon, or should I go as far as to track down another XL-2 to rent? Is it something wrong with Final Cut? Some setting or something?
If someone could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

The XL-2 does not shoot 'High Def". It records DV in either 4:3 or 16:9 anamorphic formats.
Here's my standard "so you are using a Canon camcorder to capture and it isn't working" routine:
Not all Canon cameras have connection issues, but hanging around this site I've come to recognize their ability to connect in FCP is the most problematic of all the camera brands. If you have a Canon camcorder, and can not get it to connect up with FCP, the following is a way to sort through the issues and get it to work. Some are elegant - some are ugly.
    Before we go any farther
-you should be using 'Firewire Basic' as the control protocol. If you aren't, go change it and try again.
-Also, verify that you have a solid installation of Quicktime. You may want to reinstall it using the 'delete receipts' method. Do a quick search here on the site - it is mentioned daily if not hourly.
With some confidence that the software installation and camera settings are correct and it still won't capture correctly, you are most likely a victim of the dread 'Canon firewire bus incompatibility problem'. Simply stated: Canon cameras do not play well with other devices on the same firewire bus. And, since all the firewire ports on a Mac connect to one bus - well - you get the picture.
The most direct solution is to purchase another, non-Canon device to use as your capturing machine. The Sony DSR-11 is highly recommended for DV work. A deck will save wear and tear on the camera's lightweight drive mechanism and will allow you to permanently connect a NTSC/PAL monitor for proper viewing. (If you are working with HDV, you will have other issues ...)
Beyond replacing your tape playback device, the path you take depends on the model of computer you own.
    1. If you have a G5 tower or a MacPro, capture to a second internal drive with only the camera attached. If you need to move material to firewire drive, disconnect the camera. A second internal drive is quite inexpensive these days if you do not already have one.
    2. If you have a G5 tower (PCI) MacPro (PCI), G4 powerbook (PCMCIA) or MacBookPro (Expresscard 34) with an available slot, purchase the appropriate firewire card for the slot. Connect your camera to the card and you should be good to go. The new card creates a unique bus and will avoid collisions with the external drives.
    3. If you do not have a slot or a second internal drive and you are stuck with the camera, welcome to the camera/drive shuffle.
    - shut down and remove the external hard drive(s) from the system
    - connect the camera directly to the firewire port of the computer
    - start the camera then the computer
    - capture to your internal (system) hard drive
    - shut down the camera and computer
    - disconnect the camera and reconnect the external hard drive(s)
    - start hard drive(s) and computer
    - move captured files to external hard drive(s)
    - edit
If you output back to tape or wish to view your work on an external Video (NTSC or PAL) monitor, you need to set up the camera to use the firewire out as the A/DV converter or VTR - which means reversing the steps:
    - copy the file back to the internal drive
    - shut everything down
    - disconnect the external drive(s)
    - connect the camera to the firewire port (and the TV to the camera if needed)
    - start the camera then the computer
    - play the file.
One caveat here - You may have difficulty getting the file back to tape without dropping frames. Playing files off of the system drive is very demanding and they may have a hard time keeping up.
All in all, if you do not have the option for second bus (i.e. iMacs, eMacs, iBooks, MacBooks) you may want to think about a computer with expandable options next time.
There is the option of capturing using iMovie, but that brings on it's own set of problems and is not recommended.
    Good luck.

  • Does the DCR-SR62 30GB Sony Handycam work with Final Cut Express hd 3.5?

    Hi,
I am a new mac user and I want to get a good camera that will work with Final Cut Express hd, I am currently looking at the DCR-SR62 30GB and the HDR-UX1 dvd both by sony and I would like to know if these to cameras or one of them will work with Final Cut Express Hd. Thanks.

Niether one of these cams are the best choice for FCE. FC can not directly work with either DVD or HD (as in Hard drive) camcorders. You will have to convert and/or rip the output of either camera, giving you an extra work step and perhaps diminishing the quality of your footage
FCE is designed to work with DV/HDV material ... from a tape, throught a Firewire connection
There is software like MPEG Streamclip which will allow you to convert those cam's output to work with FC but if you haven't bought them yet, I would hold off and look at a good quality tape based cam

  • M-AUDIO Fast Track Ultra with Final Cut 7

I have been using an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra device with Final Cut 6 and could listen to Quicktime 5.1 audio files in the timeline in full surround. Since I installed the Studio 3 upgrade with Final Cut 7 (same OSX version), this is not working anymore. I just have stereo output. When I start my backup version of Final Cut 6, it still work fine.
Any clue how to fix this in Final Cut 7 ?

    Hi,
The 5.1 audio preset was already selected in the setting and each of the 6 audio tracks is assign to the proper speaker. It was the same set-up in the v6 but it was working which is not the case in the v7. There might be a new setting somewhere.
    Thanks for trying.

  • Is my issue with Final Cut Pro or my Macbook pro?

I'm going to try to be as thorough as possible in explaining my situation because I can't figure this problem out and it's exhausting me. I have an early 2011 macbook pro with the 2.2 ghz processor. I upgraded to 16gb of ram almost a year ago. I've been using Final Cut Pro 7 on this computer for several years now without issue and have made no setting changes that would prompt my problems. A few months ago my battery decided to stop holding a charge and now just registers 0%. Around the same time, while editing a short video my computer began behaving like it was overheating. It would crash, restart, crash and then restart again. After I did a disk and permissions repair it began to work normally again and I haven't had any more crashing issues. Around this period of time I began noticing that when my computer turns on it doesn't register the correct time and date. Given a few moments it corrects itself, but for some strange reason it was doing that every time.
Anyway, around that time I tried to upgrade to Mavericks and experienced an issue during installation because my hard drive was apparently damaged in some way and the installation couldn't be completed. I restored my previous OS and tried to carry on as I was with the damaged hard drive for as long as I could. I was still able to do everything I needed on the computer. I could still edit videos with Final Cut. I could still browse the internet. I could still stream Netflix.
About a month ago Final Cut stopped working. I could open the program, start a new project and import media files, but when I dragged them into the timeline, they just stuttered (audio would play but video would lag and then jump several frames then lag and jump frames). At the time I assumed this was because my hard drive finally gave up, but I was still able to do other functions like browse the internet and stream basketball games with nba league pass (granted they weren't crisp hd - on a side note, netflix was also behaving oddly. when I would browse through my list, it wouldn't stop scrolling when I moved the mouse away.) so I assumed the hard drive was my issue.
I just replaced my hard drive with an ssd (crucial m500) and upgraded to mavericks (10.9.1) and now I am having the same issues. Netflix behaves fine. Basketball games stream fine. My battery is still dead (obviously that wasn't going to change). I get the wrong date and time for a minute, but I'm thinking that's battery related now. But Final Cut still lags to the point where I can't use it. Video clips also won't render. I thought this might be an issue with the Final Cut program so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but it still did the same thing. Assuming I hadn't correctly/completely uninstalled it, I downloaded HitFilm 2 (an editing program that had a free download promotion at the time), figuring using a different program, if i could edit video with it, then my issue is with Final Cut and not my computer. Unfortunaely, I'm having the same lagging issues with HitFilm as I was with Final Cut.
I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. Sorry if this was a rambling post, but I wanted to get as much of the background out there as possible, should it provides anyone with a clue as to what is the issue here. Does anyone have any idea what could be at fault here? I'm stumped.

You should convert the media to QuickTime. Without knowing any specifics most likely the simplest way is to use MPEG Streamclip.
