I have burnt projects in the past from hd but cant seem to create an sp dvd from an combo hd and sd
project. I am using the setting best quality 120 minutes

Cant Open DVD Studio Pro

Ok so whenh I open the application it tries to open a previous project and it says it cant locate a file and wont open. How do you go about reseting DVD studio pro so it wont open a previous project right when you open it without having to have to project open, since it wont open. make sence?

Mine always opens an untitled project unless you double click a project file to open the application.
What version of DVDSP are you using?
Try deleting the preference file located in <home>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dvdstudiopro.plist

Cannot Burn DVD studio pro project

I have this DVD Studio Pro project. I'm a new Studio Pro user by the way. I simulated the whole project, it works awesome (on screen).
Then I burn it. It doesn't work. More then that, the DVD isn't even read on my MAC or any other DVD readers (for TV's or on other computers, MACs or PCs).
Then I tried building it, it works, all files are there with the folder HVDVD_TS. There isn't any AUDIO_TS though. Then, I formatted that project. Once on DVD nothing worked. It isn't even read just like the other one
Anyone has any experience or insight on this problem?

Ok, so let me elaborate.
It's just like you suggested. I did the "Build" option. And I saw the files were all there in a HVDVD_TS folder. So I went back in DVDSP and I did the "Format" option using that folder as a source. And once burned, it didn't work.
I also tried just simply "Burn" which is "Build & Format". So to answer the last question, yes I tried the "Build & Format" option and it does give the same result. When I insert the DVD in any DVD reading device, it isn't recognized at all. I hope this clarifies a bit.
I was hoping that the DVD brand I was using wasn't good because that would of solved the issue quite easily. Any suggestions as to what the issue is with this new information?

ok I am done, did a practice burn of one of my clips on the same settings. Project burned just fine and played in the DVD player. Earlier I was having problems it was only playing on my Mac.
NOW I get this message - The recording device reported the media error: Unknown device error. (0x0C, 0x00.)
I am done with a project and need it to get out today, PLEASE HELP please please please. I have stayed up all night jumping through hoops and so close to finishing.

As in you're burning from DVD studio? you might wanna build your format as a .img to your hd then using disk utility or toast, burn that to disk.... or it could just be your optical drive :/

This took about 7.5 hours. I exported the audio separately as AC3. Finder plays it sound & pictures. Quicktime plays the video. DVD Studio Pro, when I drag the assets (video, audio) to the timeline editor, so I can play it in the viewer, it plays the audio the video is black. No setting in view or any other setting will get it to play the video. This project is due to ship today and I don't want to re import it if I don't have to.
I exported this project before the MPEG2 export as a Qicktime with .mov suffix. This plays alright, but there is artifacting around motion. I think this is due to low VBR, but don't know. Can ayone help?

If I may chime in...
I'm a little confused on the "what plays what" part, but all that really matters is what DVDSP sees/plays.
I've worked on a system like yours and what I'd recommend is:
1. NEVER export via Compressor. It's just ungodly slow on anything less than a Quad. Export a self contained QuickTime Movie using the first export option and use that to feed Compressor.
2. Segment your output into manageable clips (I like 15-20 minutes) both to perfect the encoding and so you aren't re-encoding the whole show if something goes sour. It will all play fine as long as it's all in the same DVDSP timeline.
From what you describe, I'm thinking you're on an early version of Compressor that had A-Pack as the AC-3 encoder. This is no biggie, I mention it mostly to verify. Early Compressor was good too.
Make maybe a 5 minute piece to tune up. Just export as normal, then into Compressor. Your encoding values seem about right. Get the AV pair into DVDSP and it should play. I'm guessing that part of your problem is that the processor is fighting to handle the project size. Build the test clip project and look at it in DVD Player to view what would have been burned. If all looks OK, go for it. If not, bring back the results for discussion. This should be a snap, it's just a really big project. Keep your head up, I had a friend do a 225-minute disk on his G5...

Is Compressor 4 necessary when sending from FCP X to DVD Studio Pro

I am making a FCP X movie and when it's finished I want to put it on a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. I have done this before but now I'm wondering if I should first export it to Compressor 4 and then to DVD Studio Pro. I understand that if I was puting it on YouTube or an iPod device I would need to Compress it however why would I need to go to Compresss 4 first if ultimately going to DVD Studio Pro? Would I get a better Codec quality then what I get from exporting in FCP X using their default Compression format i.e. Quicktime? Should I use an Apple ProRes Compression from Compressor 4? I guess I really don't understand the encoding quality options very well however I do want the best quality on my finished DVD. The DVD or Sequence is somewhere around 20 - 25 minutes if that makes any difference in your response.

People will tell you that encoding in Compressor will give the best quality, but that assumes you are using a suitable preset and for your length of video the ready made ones are unsuitable and will waste time as they are all 2-pass with variable bit rates (VBR).
For DVDs under 70 minutes long the best quality and fastest encoding times are achieved using a constant bit rate (CBR) of around 7.5mbps.
For your short DVDs you should achieve the highest quality and fastest processing by simply exporting the project from the timeline as it is, drop it into DVDSP and set DVDSP to encode and burn it at the specs I gave above.
Returning to my opening comment, you will frequently find that the theoretically best solution to a problem results in no discernible improvement but often entails a lot more work and time-expenditure.
P.S. You might get marginally better quality by raising the bit rate to 8mbps but you run a slight risk that some old or cheap players may not be able to keep up, resulting in dropped frames.

What's the best compressor setting to export from FCP to DVD Studio Pro?

I am exporting an 11 minute video from FCP Studio 2 via compressor to go to DVD Studio Pro. It's DV PAL 720 x 576 and I intend the final DVD to be 16:9 so I'll be choosing 16:9 letterbox in DVDStudio Pro.
As my video is only 11 minutes am I losing quality by selecting Best Quality DVD 90 minutes?
And is the way I described above the best way to go about it?

You should try the setting as a start, though there are many tweaks you can do if you do not like the results. One of the biggest tweaks is the frame controls (adds more time but can help.)
You should send out to a preset for 16:9 (or make your own setting with aspect ratio of 16:9) then flag the track in DVD SP to 16:9 Letterbox

Steps to exporting from FCP to Compressor/DVD studio pro

Hello,
I have just completed editing my video and would like to know the steps to exporting my video so that I can burn it on a DVD. I need help with the steps involved in exporting my project to compressor then to DVD studio pro.

p.s. on a separate note: I shot in 1080i and converted my raw footage to .mov format (640 x 480) to edit. Now that I'm done with editing, is there a way to bring the quality back up to 1080i?

Conversion settings from fcp to dvd studio pro?

i have a seven minute short subject that i need to burn to dvd using dvd studio pro. before i export from fcp, wanted to double check my fcp export settings with anyone who's been there before.
here's my choices: export with quicktime conversion, under standard video compression settings choose none for compression, select best quality and choose millions of colors. also no compression for audio.
i've got to burn six of these suckers for festival screeners and require the best possible quality so i'd appreciate someone letting me know if i'm heading the wrong direction. btw... the dvd burn on a file this size without a menu seems pretty straightforward, but if there's a pitfall i'm not seeing please let me know that as well.

From my personal experience, I find it's much more efficient to export using QUICKTIME MOVIE, a dropdown menu will ask you these questions: SETTING, current settings; INCLUDE, audio and video; MARKERS (up to you)
uncheck MAKE MOVIE SELF-CONTAINED.
save it where you can find it. It will do a quick export. Open COMPRESSION, drag this file into the COMPRESSION FOLDER, check your settings (MPEG2) and let compressor compress.
Then drag this MPEG2 into your DVDSP.
You can skip using compressor, and drag the uncompressed QTIME straight to DVDSP, it will automatically compress. I found DVDSP doesn't compress it cleanly, therefore chose compressor to compress my movies before importing them into DVDSP.
I hope this helps, I look forward to reading more postings, perhaps I'm going thru too many steps.

From FCP to DVD Studio Pro

When I export from FCP then use compressor to create the mpeg2 file for DVD and then burn a DVD in DVD Studio Pro the video is then hot. I don't know if I'm not seeing it right w/my monitors or where the problem is. Would appreciate any trouble shooting techniques or what steps need to happen to get everything correct.

Has anyone an Idea? It seems to me that FCP is not showing the footage correctly. Or its doing something to the gamma which when once outside of you machine ie DVD's it looks Brighter and burnt out.
Have you tried looking at your footage in Quicktime Player. Then going to the 'Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility' tick box in the prefs and turning that off. Does your footage look 'hot' as you describe? (I assume when you say hot you mean brighter). If it does then whatever that button does I want Compressor to do the same to footage I put through it.
Hope that makes sense to your problem, I hope you have found an answer or directions I could try...

What is the workflow from FCP to Compressor to preserve 24p frame rate?

I just exported my 108-minute project from FCP to Compressor (v3.0.3). I used the MPEG-2 "setting" in Compressor. My end result was a Compressor file whose frame rate is at 29.97. When I import this new compressed file into DVD Studio Pro, the DVD project defaults to 29.97.
I'm a little unsure of how this works. I have an FCP project set at XDCAM EX 1080p24. I'd like to preserve 24 frames per second for a "film" look in the final product, which right now is ultimately a burning of a DVD using DVD Studio Pro.
Should I be using a different setting in Compressor to achieve 24 frames per second? Am I missing a switch to toggle in Compressor? Or FCP? Or DVD Studio Pro? Or... is my final DVD product, which is listed at 29.97, actually preserving the 24 frames and I'm just seeing things incorrectly? (It looks video-ish.)

created an appealing depth of field where possible
avoided various "videofying" shots, like fast pans and so forth
crushed the blacks in color correction
used Nattress and adjusted the S curves in certain areas
I'm just wondering if I missed a step somewhere when it came down to designating the frame rate in Apple Compressor. When I saw the 29.97 frame rate designation in DVD Studio Pro, it surprised me. And then watching my movie on DVD (which is always a slightly difficult experience) I was really feeling like I was seeing an undesirable crisp video-ish feel that I hadn't seen before outputing to DVD.

Export from FCP directly into DVD studio pro?

Is it possible to export from FCP directly into DVD studio pro? If not, what is the preferred file format because my exported quicktime files come up as "incompatible format" when I try to add them into my DVD project. Any help is appreciated.

You need to encode audio as well from Compressor. You'll have 2 files - audio and video.

HD from FCP to DVD Studio Pro...Help!

Looking for opinions in getting the BEST possible Standard Def DVD from a Final Cut Pro sequence containing heavilly effected HD DVCPro P2 footage.
My sequences settings are:
Frame Size: 960 x 720
Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720)(16x9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720)
Editing Timebase: 23.97
Compressor: DVCPRO HD 720p60
Video Processing: Rendering in 8 bit YUV
I of course have Compressor and DVD Studio Pro 4, but have not gone from my HD sequence to SD DVD yet with quality results. I'm not concerned with time just highest possible quality so that it holds up well on HD televisions.

I just finished a 15-minute HD 1080i project in FCP that used AJA's DVC PRO HD 1080i 29.97 codec. I tried to make a self-contained QT movie and send it to compressor using the settings you suggested. Unfortunately, it came out with a lot of moraying and the detail around subjects eyes were pixelated.
Is there another setting you would recommend for going from 1080i to a Standard Def DVD?

FCP Pro Res Super 16mm -- Compressor -- DVD Studio Pro (Nightmare Workflow Critique)

I figured I post here rather than the DVD Studio Pro forum; I've posted on Creative Cow as well but haven't gotten any responses yet.
Before I mention my problem, I'd like to mention that I've tried several types of compression methods and bitrates and unfortunately, my disk still freezes in my player, generally around the same area.
(I have two, minute long clips with Smoothcam there).
I'll try to be as specific about my work-flow as I can and I've posted the photos of my FCP and Compressor settings below.
30 Minutes. Super 16mm.
2K DPX Scans -- > Graded In Color --> Pro Res 4444 23.976 --> Sent To Compressor --> Mpeg 2 + AC3 --> Build & Format With DVD Studio Pro
I set blue compression markers at the start of each Smoothcam clip.
I've recompressed my footage without Smoothcam as well - with the same end result.
I've sent my timeline to Compressor and used both the 5.5-7 VBR setting and the 6.5 CBR settings (with everything under Frame Controls set to the highest quality).
(I've also used the 6.2-7.7 built in settings with the ninety-minute high quality preset).
I am using Sony DVD-R disks. 16X/1X. When I play them in my PS3, the film freezes at different points in the first two-three minutes - then skips ahead exactly to the same point in my film - about halfway.
I've set Chapter markers and it skips to the halfway one; from there it plays fine.
1. I wanted to ask if I should maybe export my entire sequence first through FCP (an .mov file) and try Compressing that?
(I've done this and the result is still the same)
2. Should I set it to Pro Res 422 HQ first?
(I've done this and the result is still the same)
3. Perhaps I should just try to Compressor with the 90Min-HQ setting without changing anything?

4. Should I remove the Smoothcam?
I'm currently compressing the entire sequence void of all Smoothcam.
When I bring the files into DVD Studio Pro, I see under preferences that Studio Pro also has VBR settings. Do those have any effect on my DVD encode? There is no CBR there - only VBR set from 5.5-7.
5. Is there anything I'm doing wrong with regards to my workflow? There are several options that may be causing this; I'm not sure if its the progressive footage to interlaced standard definition disk, or modifying field dominance, gop structure, etc.
Any help would be greatly (that's greatly) appreciated.

My first impression is you're trying to make this too hard...
You have a high quality timeline which is downconverted to 1080, no problem. Once rendered, SmoothCam
should not represent a problem. If anything, SmoothCam will reduce the sudden movement that can cause problems. Any scenes where you have a high rate of change per frame (like in an explosion or a background of leaves flapping in the wind) should be marked with compression markers.
Export as a QT movie using sequence settings (include markers for DVDSP) so you have a completed source file for compression. I'm not aware of anything that will improve the quality beyond what is in the timeline, so current sequence settings are fine. Test this for playback issues.
If you are having playback problems with the sequence after export and compression, the most probable cause is excessively high bandwidth requirements. Try using the DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes preset. It generally produces a very good quality product. Any attempt to increase the quality will likely increase the bandwidth requirements that are the probable cause of the skipping.
While Sony is a big name, their DVD substrate is only mediocre. If you think the substrate is a problem, switch to Verbatim or JVC/Taiyo-Yuden.
If you are dissatisfied with the quality of the Compressor output, look into the Cinema Craft encoding products.

Undesired cropping from FCP to DVD Studio Pro?

I start with a QT file exported from FCP 6. The settings are 16:9. The problem is the resulting DVD program I create in DVD Studio Pro plays in regular DVD players with the program-image cropped about 5% at the bottom and 5% at the top. I've tried other settings in DVD Studio Pro, such as using 4:3 or 4:3 pan-and-scan but, obviously, I get warped images (smushed horizontally) or cropped images.
Any ideas where things are going wrong?

Are you aware of safe area? If not it sounds like you're seeing the effects of overscan. If you watch the dvd on your computer monitor does it still crop the image? If so at what point are you seeing the cropping? ie does the frame look right in the simulator in dvdsp, how about if you look at the file you've exported from fcp?
You need to post the fcp capture (clip) settings, sequence settings and the method you're using to export from fcp (ie compressor, qt movie, qt conversion) as well as the encoding settings in dvd sp if you're just doing a qt export from fcp.
