Carbon Copy Cloning question.

Hi all.
Today I made a CCC (exact clone) of my hard drive to an external HD via a USB connection. I wanted a bootable backup of everything. To achieve this end one of the requirements in the setup process was the need to erase the target volume.
This I did. But when the job was done I received the following message:
"The target volume will not boot powerPC Macs. PowerPC Macs can only boot from a hard drive that is partitioned with the Apple Partition Map format".
So what does that mean, and what do I have to do to comply with this requirement? Obviously erasing the target HD does not do the trick.
Regards

What I find strange, why does the error message not say exactly what the problem is instead of using criptic messages.
The message seems cryptic because you have interpreted it as an error message when it actually is an informational message, one that warns you about a restriction on the kind of +partition scheme+ required to boot a PowerPC-based Mac.
A partition scheme is not the same as a +file system+. A partition scheme defines how a drive is portioned into sections for different purposes. A file system defines how one or more of those sections, called partitions, is organized into files. "Apple Partition Map" (APM) is an example of a partition scheme. "Mac OS Extended" (HFS Plus or HFS+) is an example of a file system.
Partition schemes are associated with hardware & firmware items that control the beginning stages of the boot process, before a full-fledged operating system is loaded from a file system. It is called "booting the system" because of the analogy to "pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps" -- it seems paradoxical because the OS can't load its files if it isn't already loaded from them. All modern Macs (& most PC's) depend on a sort of "mini OS" embedded in the firmware to overcome this, either +Open Firmware+ ("OF") for PPC-based Macs or +Extensible Firmware Interface+ ("EFI") for Intel-based ones.
Neither firmware-based mini OS is sophisticated enough to read the contents of file systems directly; instead it reads data from a predefined location on the drive, defined by the partition scheme, which in turn tells it how to load the next part of the boot sequence, which eventually leads to the components of an OS being loaded that can read from & write to the file systems it supports.
Thus, it is not sufficient that the boot partition be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" for the OS that it contains to boot a PPC-based Mac. If it is part of the wrong partition scheme, the OF will never find it. Similarly, because the built-in OF doesn't explicitly support booting from USB-connected drives, it is unsupported by Apple & may generate a similar informational message.

  • Carbon Copy Cloner Question

    Good Morning,
I normally use CCC to copy a bootable image of my computer's HD on to an external Firewire HD. Yesterday (to experiment) I created a sparse disk image with CCC on my external HD... Seems like a good option since I don't have to use the entire HD as a bootable copy.
I've ended up with a file called "Littlemac.sparseimage" on my external. When I double-click it, a volume entitled "Littlemac" shows up on my desktop.
    So here's my question:
Let's say that sometime in the future my internal HD crashes (I had a bad day with a Leopard install) and I need to restore my internal HD from my external.
What's the procedure/process for getting booted up to a point where I can use CCC to clone the external HD back to the Internal HD?
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Bob:
I use a registered version of SuperDuper in which I have used the feature of a read only compressed .dmg. I knew that CCC offered the option of a disk image. I had only the latest version on my computer, downloaded the earlier version for Panther and found no mention of a compressed .dmg. I read through the documentation in the Help menu and found no mention there, either. I may have missed something in my quick read, but I don't think it is offered. As far as I can tell, the offer only an expandable sparseimage. Nor am I sure if the unregistered version of SD offers the feature of a compressed read only .dmg as the registered version does. I suggest that you download it and try. You may also want to post a question in CCC Discussions Forum and see what you find out. Sorry about that
Please let me know what you find out, especially if you download SD and check the unregistered version.
    Good luck.

  • Copying or cloning question...

I'm upgrading my MBP with a bigger hard drive this weekend.
I know of a couple of recommended programs to 'clone' my HD (Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper) my question is:
Do these programs actually make an identical copy (clone) of the source, complete with any fragmentation and scattered files, or do these programs transfer the data in a logical order and reassemble files and, in doing so, de-frag the data?
I'm guessing they do the former but wonder if the later is possible in any way.
Would a better way of restoring the data be to install the OS from DVD, upgrade/update to it's latest spec and then run the migration program (again, I'm assuming the migration program does more than just 'clone' the data)?
    Thanks...

They do the latter - those are file-based duplication programs, so cloning the drive with either program will defrag it (although FYI, the Mac OS automatically defrags files <20 MB in the background). It's actually more work to make a byte-for-byte copy (which you don't want to do).
The reinstall of the OS and migrate from the old system would work too, but your easiest path in this case is just to clone the drive with either of the two programs you mentioned.

  • Cloning with Carbon Copy

Don't know if there is a better forum for this one. If you can refer me would appreciate it.
I want to reformat my main HD because of an unrepairable disk error when I try to do disk repair using Disk Utility while booted from an external HD. I am guessing that this is the source of a problem in trying reinstall OSX with Archive on my main HD. I kept getting a message that the disk was damaged. So, I used Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate the disk to my second HD (SATA). CCC hung at the message "establishing Darwin links". After 3 hours, I forced quit, but my G5 boots nicely from the system on the second disk. Everything appears to be fine so I am ready to wipe out the original HD. Does any one know if the hang up at establishing the Darwin links is a problem with CCC?
    Thanks in advance...

  • Can I update an iMac from another iMac using Carbon Copy Cloner?

I change office locations every 6 months and move to a similar iMac setup. At each move, using external hard drives, I update the "older" iMac HD with the current Mail, Addressbook, work files, etc. Currently, I am using Snow Leopard; the machine I am transitioning to is behind, using Leopard.
This time something new is before me, I purchased (honestly) the Snow Leopard upgrade for the iMac that I am transitioning to. So I have an OS upgrade plus a file plus a lot of application additions/upgrades.
The question is, can I use *Carbon Copy Cloner* to make an image of my current iMac and upgrade the 2nd iMac with all my recent applications in one fell swoop? I would

Yes. Noondaywitch is correct. As long as the version of OSX is no older than the one the newest Mac came with, and the older Mac is compatible (enough RAM, etc), and the drives are formatted properly, you should be able to clone from one Mac to an external HD, then clone that back to the other one.
When you make the clone, boot up from it and run several apps, make sure your internet connection and browser work, etc.
Before cloning back to the other Mac, boot it up from the clone and do the same.
You may have to change a few settings for your internet connection, of course.

  • Can I Use Time Machine With Carbon Copy Cloner?

As of today, I upgraded my iMac (and eventually my Macbook) to Snow Leopard. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a clone of my drive to my external (I did a clean install) and now that Snow Leopard is installed, I only want to put back on to my computer just certain files, such as a select selection of my documents, some of my iTunes library, etc. Given that I couldn't find that option in Migration Assistant, I just manually copied over what I wanted from the clone on my external.
Still, I would like to keep a daily backup for my iMac's HD and that's where Time Machine comes in, but there's some questions I have before I do it:
Given that my iMac's HD now has significant free space (as I only brought back, say, 10% of the stuff to my iMac from my external when I cloned on CCC), if I enabled Time Machine to back up my iMac's HD stuff, it wouldn't overwrite the 90% of stuff on my external with the 10% that's on my iMac's HD, would it? For instance, I have about 20,000 songs on my external drive, but maybe have brought back only, say, 5,000 to my iMac (for now). Given that my iMac's iTunes Music folder shows 5,000 songs on it, when TM backs that up to my external drive, it won't overwrite the other iTunes Music folder which has the other 15,000, right? The same thing could be applied for documents, photos, etc. If not, how would TM deal with that? I would hope to avoid the other extreme, which are duplicate files/folders.
I guess I just want to be able to have the ability to get into that cloned drive on my external if I need to add more stuff to the iMac or if I need it one day to boot up the machine. But I also want to be able to have Time Machine at hand to back up daily the little that is on my iMac right now. So I suppose I'm wondering how can I achieve this without the two conflicting or screwing up?
    Thanks!

    MM1010 wrote:

Correct. Time Machine won't delete anything else on the same volume.
But as Barry says, it will use all the empty space available, before it starts deleting its oldest backups, so there will eventually be a conflict. See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Also see #1 there, to be sure you have enough space for Time Machine to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups.
A better bet, however, would be to use a separate external HD. If you have the Time Machine backups on the same physical HD, when it fails (and they all do, sooner or later), you risk losing both.

  • Having a "carbon" copy of my old mac to new

    Hey all,
I have a question (sorry if it has been answered before but because it is kind of urgent i havent been able to search a lot). I am going to buy a new macbook pro but i would like to have the exact same utilities, applications and app licences that i already have in my current. To be more precise i am running through usb a program (through parallel) and because i have bought the licence from a company i dont want to buy it again but use it on the new one. In other words i want the new macbook to be exact the same as my old one. Is it possible or not?
    Thanks in advance!!

For example, I have 4 cloned Macs on 4 HD in a package only 40mm thick, and 2.5”, a very tight package perfect for recovering any of my primary Mac computers very quickly, and stored away securely in a firebox.
Some advantages of a cloned HD:
In case of an internal HD crash and failure, there is absolutely nothing quicker to getting back to 100% operation than having a HD clone handy to either boot from, or within 20 mins. installing and removing the bad HD. Nothing to install software-wise, and a speedy immediate return to your computer use and productivity.
If you do an option key startup at boot you can directly boot to your cloned drive externally and operate from same like normal.
Sandboxing: With the help of the Cloned Drive, you can perform sandboxing, or the testing of new software, their updates and applications before they are installed on your Mac system. Moreover, if there are issues with the system, you can troubleshoot them by booting off the Clone. Many people test new APPS or experiment with a secondary clone and never worry about a failure or serious issue since the internal HD is untouched and the secondary clone can be wiped afterwards if any major issue occurs in testing. This is an invaluable tool in many instances.
If you sell you computer for purchase of a new one, you can take the clone you have on hand and install same or clone it to the new internal drive of your new Mac.
As it turns out one of the huge positive benefits of a clone is that people were seeing faster HD speeds; with APPS booting up from the clone than they had seen with the internal HD. The cloning applications in cloning the drive defragments the data to the clone and remove the “holes” in the cloning process.
With a small portable HD clone you can take your ‘computer’ anywhere to most any other current Mac and boot from your HD clone and have your entire system and its data immediately there for use. In case one is across the world and their macbook gets stolen, or damaged, with another Mac you can be up and 100% in the time it takes to boot to the new or borrowed Mac!
You can clone from your external clone to the internal HD/SSD in case of corruption.
The best thing that can be said, ideally, when your HD crashes with all its data is “so what, I’ve got a clone right here” and you can return to normal operation within seconds (by booting from the clone) or minutes (by swapping drives).
In separating out your system hub (OS) and your data hub, and storing them separately, is if you make only periodic clones (every month or so), and have a HD crash, the worst case outcome is that what is lost on your clone are some bookmarks and preferences since your data hub containing your vital files is constantly archived separately as it should be.

  • Good news about Carbon Copy Cloner

After reading a post from Mike Bombich at his Carbon Copy Cloner web site that he knew of no reason CCC wouldn't work under Rosetta on the new InteliMacs I decided to try cloning to an external FW400/USB2 Maxtor drive, and indeed he is correct!
Bombich warns that CCC hasn't been thoroughly wrung out on Intel hardware, and that you can NOT mix clones: an Intel clone will NOT boot a PowerPC Mac, nor vice versa.
The only real trick is to be certain to partition the clone drive in the new GUID Partition Scheme listed under Options in the Partition page of Disk Utility. From there CCC runs like it always has, and Bob's your Uncle.

I recommend checking CCC's Help and the stickies at CCC General Tips http://forums.bombich.com/viewforum.php?f=2. If you still have questions, post them to the CCC Troubleshooting forum at http://forums.bombich.com/viewforum.php?f=3—Bombich Forums Moderator.

  • Newbie macbook cloning question (30 macbooks)

I am a PC network admin for over 10 years and the school i work for made the decision to go all Mac... so.... Hi.
We are starting out with about 30 macbooks in a lab environment. Active Directory. All will be using the same network AD name and password.
I can get them set up fine on my network (glad I crossed that hurddle) but now my question is what the latest, easiest cloning/imaging solution is?
I don't necessarily HAVE to have a solution that can do more than one at a time, but in a year we will roll out a 1 to 1 so having the ability to clone several at once is a plus.
I have read about Bombich's NetRestore and CopyCatX but am not really sure how good or current they are.
My other question is are there any "hardware" solutions? May sound like a dumb question, but like a cart device you can plug all the macbooks in and it clones them? I had heard of something similar for ipad carts but it was just syncing all the apps.
Thanks in advance and I apologize in advance for my newness

There are numerous options for creating bootable clones if you prefer not to use Bombich's NetRestore.
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    SuperDuper!
The Restore option of Disk Utility
CCC is free to schools and teachers. SuperDuper! is free to use only for full clones. If you want to use other features then you must purchase a license for $25 (I think.)
It is easy enough to set up the base system you want on one computer then create a disc image of that base system and burn it to a dual-layer DVD that can be used to boot and install on all the other computers.
You don't actually need a hardware server as you can run OS X Server on any Mac. Once Lion is released the Server software will become available for $30.00 in addition to the $30.00 for Lion. In your case if the computers were purchased on or after June 6th, then you will have 30 days after the release of Lion to get a redemption coupon for a free copy of Lion. The details will be made available on Apple's website once Lion is released.

  • Carbon Copy Cloner:  do you have to wipe the target drive

From reading the instructions that come with the download of CCC, it seems that when you clone your Applications drive to another drive (as backup), you are essentially reformatting that 2nd drive to be a copy of the first, right?
So when you use CCC, you must have a drive dedicated to becoming the clone? You would lose all data on the target drive? Correct?
If so, it seems to make sense to get a modest hard drive just to hold a clone of the cleanly reinstalled system.
I still am not clear on how to create a bootable clone on a drive, and how to restore that clone. Do you have to reinstall the operating system (and the various application files that also are installed at that time) and then somehow transfer the clone back to the original drive. Or somehow does the clone make it unnecessary to reinstall the operating system before moving the cloned copy of the os back to the Apps drive.
Whew, that's a tangled up understanding so if anyone can unravel this mess itd be great.
Also, is CCC better than making disk images with Disk Utility?

    Jon:
Some of what I say will be repeating some of what has already been posted by way of giving a comprehensive response.
The two most popular and powerful utilities for backup/cloning are SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner. Both have their supporters. Both are effective and relatively easy to use. The latest version of CCC is more powerful, but, I think, SD is easier to use. One of these is the first element in making a clone.
SuperDuper will erase the Destination drive before cloning. CCC gives you an option. You really want it erased, unless you are doing cumulative (SmartUpdates in SD) updates, or you will end up with a jumble of stuff. Both will do cumulative updates. CCC allows you to drill down to a single folder. SD allows you to clone the entire HDD, or just the Users Folder. Both make bootable clones, diskimages, compressed read only disk images.
You need an external firewire Hard Disk Drive. Get the largest you can afford and partition it. Since PPC Macs will not boot from USB devices, firewire is important. There are a lot of HDDs out there, some are sexy looking, some have one touch backup etc. The most important feature in a firewire HDD is that it should have the more reliable Oxford 911+ chipset. This is the part that interfaces the Hard Disk Drive with the computer. When it goes, and it does go on many of these drives after the warranty has run out, the drive itself may still be functional but the computer can't see it. Here is a list of HDDs from OWC that have the Oxford 911+ chipset.
You need to format the new HDD Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and, if it is larger than you need for backup, partition it. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has excellent tips on backing up, and has a suggested scheme for partitioning your new external FW HDD. If you need step-by-step directions for partitioning and formatting, please post back and ask.
Finally, once you have chosen your partition scheme, adjusting or deleting partitions would destroy all data on the drive except you use third party software.
Cloning is an excellent way of backing up as it not only gives you a backup of your data and total installation, but it gives you an emergency boot drive as well as a drive from which you can boot to run diagnostics and repairs on your internal HDD.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • Carbon Copy Cloner issue

In preparation to upgrade my 27" iMac running Mt. Lion with FCP 7 to Mavericks, I'm going to run a test of the OS on external drive. First off, I'm going to clone my current OS to the external drive after which I would upgrade to Mavericks. Using Carbon Copy Cloner, I clicked on their Disk Center option to create Recovery Partition on this external drive.
This morning, I read this section under notes "Cloning Apple's Recovery Partition":
"Why were other volumes on my disk unmounted when I created a Recovery HD?:
CCC uses a command-line version of Disk Utility to resize the donor volume. Resizing that volume requires making changes to the partition table on the disk, and Disk Utility may choose to unmount other volumes on the disk while it makes those changes."
Does mean CCC actually changed the size of my internal HD? If so, is this damaging?
    Above that, it states:
"When CCC creates a new Recovery HD, it borrows space from your destination volume to create a new, hidden volume on that disk." This is I can understand but I am concerned that my HD has in some way been tampered with unless I am misunderstanding this.
Has anyone else used Carbon Copy Cloner or experienced this? Do I need to be concerned? Everything seems to be running OK. CCC does not have telephone support.
    Thanks,
    Phil

I've been using CCC with both ML and Mavericks and, if there is no recovery partition on the drive you are cloning to, it needs to create one (unless you'd rather not have one). And it needs to create enough space for the hidden partition to create it. No problem with that. It unmounts partitions and they will come back just as they were - I've not had a problem with that either.
CCC does not have phone support, but they have very good online support - Mike Bombich will reply if you post a question.

  • Carbon Copy Cloner, Disk Utility, etc..

I just read a post here about cloning the hard drive in a mini to an external, using CarbonCopyCloner. I was curious so I went to version tracker and downloaded. While it was downloading I read some of the reviews for it. Some people posting on Versiontracker seemed to have problems with it. Such as losing all their date. Another user suggested that using Disk Utility would be a better option.
My question is, could I create a partition on my external 160gig drive and then use disk utility to clone my mini hard drive to it? Would I then be able to boot off of that partition? If all that's possible then how would I go about doing that with disk utility? And how would I make sure that both the mini and the copy are both updated with the same data?

    Hi Jerry,
Yes, you can make an identical copy with Carbon Copy Cloner (hence the name ).
You can use dik utility to partition the external drive, then use CCC top clone the Mini's hard drive to one of the partitions. To test the clone, use system preferences to instruct the mini to boot off of the clone. Of course, this will only work with a Firewire drive.
There are preference settings in CCC that allow you to sync the drives. This way they both have the same data.
It also allows you to schedule periodic backups.
Another backup utility that I have used is SuperDuper. Version 2.0 was just released yesterday. Although it is $29.95, you can download and try it for free.
    Hope this helps,
    Steve

  • Mac Pro Boot slow after Leopard Update and Carbon Copy Cloner

I just purchased a 1TB Internal hard drive - Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm - and used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my original hard drive (which is running Tiger). Everything seems to be normal, except the the long boot up process. The desktop appears, the dock appears, and then there is a long pause of 20 to 30 seconds before the drives mount and and the desktop folders appear. I have 10 gigs of RAM, I have rebuilt the Directory with Disk Warrior 4.1, and also repaired the disk permissions (although some of them state that they can't be repaired). When I reboot from my original 250 Gig hard drive, the boot is lightning fast. Any thoughts? I have many third party software programs installed and am trying to avoid a fresh Leopard Install. Thanks, this is my first post!

this may happen on the first boot on a cloned drive because the system has to rebuild various caches that are not cloned. it should be back to normal boot speed after that.

Complete what Kurt has told you first. Then - if you use CCC - check the details in
    B4 U post...
noting especially the two links to details for preparation of a target drive and the "Proof of pudding" test.
Then make use of this section of CCC Help.
BTW, having both source and target with the same name is an invitation to a mistake. Rename one or both of them. Use meaningful names to make life easier (and safer) for yourself. Select a volume's icon in the Finder, hit <return>, type the new name, hit <return> again. The OS will notice the new name(s) immediately. Use only simple alphanumeric characters, preferably with no spaces. Even something boring like "myCloneVolume" would be better than what you currently have.

  • What exactly is a Carbon Copy Cloner and does it work on iMac Intel?

A friend of mine recommended to me that carbon copy cloner is the best way to back up data including applications and that it is a freeware downloadable via their website. Can anyone explain to me (using layman's language) what exactly it is and give me a step by step procedure on what I have to do to make it work? Also, does it work on iMac Intel and if so, would I have to set anything differently??
FYI, I do have a La Cie firewire drive.

Did you check out their website? It really has a lot of info, but here it is in a nutshell.
CCC is a cloning software tool. It will make an exact - and bootable - copy of every last bit and byte on your internal drive. You can then use that FireWire drive to boot up your Mac, or restore the data from it in case of an emergency, drive replacement or failure.
It is not universal yet, but it does run through Rosetta.
Download the program and there is a PDF file with all the step by step instructions, but it is really easy to use.
BTW, LaCie has a program that is very similar called SilverKeeper.
