CC to CC(2014)

So I've noticed when going from (for example) Premiere Pro CC to Premiere Pro CC (2014) one had to manually move over the keyboard shortcuts.  I get a link to a thread and have to sort out a trial and error attempt by a number of folks.  Is there not a way to do it straight from Adobe.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get my associated media encoder export settings to show up in the 2014 version.  I'm just wondering, are we going to have to do this every time a new Premiere Pro CC comes out?  Why not just leave it Premiere Pro CC and keep it simple?  Are they coming out with a Premiere Pro CC (2015) soon?  If it were me, I'd have just left it Premiere Pro CC.  And while I'm at it, does Adobe have anyone in the US that answers the phone or do I have to get someone form India all the time.  Hard to understand those folks and the one I talk to have to put you on hold while they look up an answer.  I mean, it's bad enough that we have to use notorious flawed java, a well know hacker vector, to install these apps, and flash, another permanently flawed program in terms of computer security, but come on Adobe, a bit more direct support from the USA would be nice.

there have been numerous reports of terrible customer service from adobe and india posted on the forums, and im not sure of any way to get a rep in the usa. the security aspect is another well known problem with adobe, a permanent bad reputation for probably well over a decade now. its as if "security" is not a concept they know or care to address, which explains why their servers were hacked and customer data stolen. yay!
premiere and other apps so far in cloud model have been installing new versions to new folders and this will probably continue. this can be a good thing to allow multiple versions installed when the new version is bugged and the only work around is to use an older version, or when sharing projects with others using different versions. i think adobe wants us to use the sync settings to carry over settings, but you can locate the setting files and move them yourself. on a windows machine they are located in the "my documents\adobe\" folder. some settings like the presets in AME can be exported from the program and imported into the new version.

  • Install Windows 8.1 Pro on Mac Mini Late 2014

I'm trying to install Bootcamp on my Mac Mini.  Windows reports that it cannot install or create a partition on the drive after formatting the BOOTCAMP partition as NTFS.
    This is my setup:
    1. Mac Mini Late 2014 with 2TB Fusion Drive.
    2. Windows 8.1 Pro x64 full version ISO downloaded from Microsoft Store.
    3. Sandisk Extreme Flash Drive (I have tried both 16GB and 64GB).
    4. Bootcamp partition = 500GB.
    5. Other USB devices plugged in: Corded USB Mouse and Apple Extended Keyboard (both of which are required to enter the serial number and navigate the installer window).
    6. No additional storage devices of any kind are connected aside from the internal Fusion drive and the installer drive.
    7. Booting from the EFI portion of the Bootcamp created Windows installer.
I have read that I should try using a USB 2 flash drive rather than a USB 3 flash drive, so I will try that next.  I fail to understand how this could make any difference.
If you have any other tips, please let me know.
I have installed or helped other people install bootcamp many times over the course of the past 2 years.  Every single time it has caused endless headaches and literally weeks of wasted time.
I have read endless posts on what is causing these problems.  I will consider summarising these for anyone else having the same problems.  Everyone has their theory so far about this Bootcamp nightmare, but so far there doesn't appear to be any one magic solution.
Apple's inability to address the issue suggests that the problem may be with the Windows installer.  Perhaps Microsoft is deliberately causing this?
I suspect the two most likely causes of these issues are the downloaded ISO or the Thumb Drive.
If you have any better idea, please let me know.
On another topic, how to I rename the NTFS partition back to BOOTCAMP?  All options to rename this partition are greyed out in Disk Utility...
    Cheers,
    Paul

The FAT32/NTFS partition is usually not adequate for an EFI install. You can delete the BCA-created partition and create a Disk Utility partition which is formatted as Free Space. This will be split into an MSR and MSD. Fusion drives create problems, especially if the BC partition lies outside the traditional MBR 2TB boundary.
Before you delete the BCA-created partition, please post the output of
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

Windows installers up to W8.1 do not have USB3 drivers. These are installed after Windows is installed and BC drivers are in place.

The requirements are pretty strict when installing Windows. Any deviations cause headaches and grief.
I suspect the two most likely causes of these issues are the downloaded ISO or the Thumb Drive.
The USB is usually the issue.
On another topic, how to I rename the NTFS partition back to BOOTCAMP?  All options to rename this partition are greyed out in Disk Utility...
After Windows is fully installed and BC drivers are in place, log into Windows, right click on it and rename it on the Windows side. It cannot be renamed on the OSX side with diskutil renameVolume. Here is an example sequence. You cannot rename volume during the installation process.

  • Image Processor Tab Missing in New Adobe Bridge CC 2014

In the new Bridge CC you used to have a TAB under tools called Photoshop which you could run the script Image Processor for easily processing jpegs. What has happened to this and is their maybe a new way of processing jpegs to lo-res that I dont know about from tiff or jpeg or does my bridge have a problem?
I have attached a image grab from my bridge that shows that the tab is not there. I know that you can access image processor directly from Photoshop, but they used to always be linked.

No, it is still in Bridge CC.
Did you uninstall Photoshop CC after installing Photoshop CC 2014? If so, that may have removed some of the Bridge integration scripts by mistake. Re-installing Photoshop CC 2014 should replace the scripts.
and it should give the image processor tab back

  • Error in compiling Photoshop CC 2014 sample project

    Hi,
I am trying to compile SDK sample project "outbound". but it is showing errors, as "Parse Issue: Unknown type name 'DialogPtr' " in DialogUtilities.h .
DialogUtilities.h file is in "Adobe Photoshop CC 2014:photoshopsdk:pluginsdk:samplecode:common:includes".
even if I add this path in project  settings it still shows the errors.
how can I make this work?
I am using Photoshop CC 2014 and Xcode version is 4.6.3 (4H1503)
If you have any idea regarding project settings then please let me know.
    Thanks and regards,
    Priyanka.

Are you using the CC 2014 release of the SDK?
The DialogUtilities.h for mac do not work. They are the old Carbon API's. See the Dissolve example for an Objective-C UI.
I would comment out the DialogUtilities.h include and other associated headers for Carbon UI. Some Carbon calls still work that are unrelated to UI.

  • SharePoint Foundation 2013 - March 2014 Update Issue - Need help

We've just applied the SharePoint Foundation 2013 March 2014 Update, it always requires that we run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard at the end of install, but this time it's getting stuck at step 9 of 10 (the profile sync service cannot be
started even as admin). Is anyone else having any issues with this update? Has anyone else applied it yet? Is anyone else planning to apply it?
If anyone can help with advice on this I'd appreciate it.

    Hi,
We can still access CA but sync will not start. Tried rebooting after the failed configuration and tried to run it again but it didn't work.

  • Mid 2014 13" rMBP - Image Persistence

    Good Morning,
Last night I came across an image persistence issue that seems to plague most rMBP users that have been supplied with an LG Panel.
I'd like to confirm that this issue is still present in Apple's most recent iteration of the Macbook Pro (Mid 2014). I purchased this 13" rMBP just under a month ago, I was hoping to improve my productivity with this purchase only to find it has hindered it further. I work with illustrator and photoshop, sometimes both at the same time. I've noticed switching between applications that there seems to be a faint silhouette of the illustrator window. When I first noticed this issue I told myself "There's no way that's burn-in, this is clearly not a plasma display and it's 2014" After a prompt restart, the faint silhouette was still there and all I could feel was frustration and complete regret after making such an expensive purchase. The feeling I had at the Apple store was similar to when I purchased my Canon 5D, you save up all this money and expect a premium product. Only this time around, I'm not quite as joyful about my purchase. The faint silhouette overlays my photos, and can be a problematic during post production. Although the silhouette may only be visible for minutes at a time before it completely disappears, this has caused me to walk away from my Mac. Which is something I have been trying to avoid, and it was working until last night.
My question is, has LG made any changes to their most recent production of Retina displays?
Do 13" rMBPs come with Samsung displays?
What are my options outside of the 14-day return window?
I'd like to avoid repair, one time I brought in my iPad and the genius was practically sliding and dropping my iPad on the genius bar. I know that Apple tries to set the bar when it comes to personal computing, and in some cases customer service. So, is it wrong of me to expect quality from a premium manufacturer?
    Thank you.

No, I did not misread, it died in 4 hours and 20 mins.
That sounds better. You confused me with:
    ...only 4:49 minutes remaining.
My science-major mind saw that as 4 minutes 49 seconds.
Still, you should get more runtime. Here is another Apple article that helps with battery life and heating issues:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity - Apple Support
The article was written before OS 10.9 and 10.10, so you need to make a change in Step 3 for 10.10. To make the required change from "My Processes" to All Processes," you now need to use Activity Monitor's "View" menu:
Another thing that is not clear in the article is that you will not get good results if you run the test immediately after a restart. Use the computer normally for about a day so that any runaway processes are activated, quit any apps you launched, then run the test.

  • New 2014 X1 Carbon Touch - 1 Week Review

I've had the New 2014 Carbon X1 for about a week now, so I thought I'd post a review about my experiences thus far.
The version I received was the high end model, i7 4th gen, 8gb ram, IPS 2560x1440 touch display. This is the first Lenovo device I have purchased, and I did so at the recommendation of my brother who has owned a T series for the last 3 years. I am a film student, so my intention is to do some light video editing (not rendering) and lightroom/ photoshop work on this device (in addition to daily use of OneNote). I was looking for a powerful ultrabook with good build quality, battery life, and cooling when I purchased this laptop.
    Hardware:
The hardware on this device has highly conservative look, which I appreciate. The laptop doesn't draw attention, but is pleasing to the eye when viewed up close. I like the fact that there are not as many creases or lines that run through the body of the device (when compared to other devices), which results in a more free flowing but unified appearance.
The matte plastic on the top of the lid has a slightly rubberized texture, making the device easy to grip. My hands get hot and moist consistently, so the lid does occasionally pick up some faint moisture streaks if I carry it without a case. The slightly rubberized texture is pleasant to the touch and is easy to wipe down with a damp cloth. The inside of the device has a similar plastic around the keys and palm rests, but does not attain as much of a rubber (soft) feel as the lid. The texture on the palm rests is good, and stays cool under extended typing conditions.
At first I was having issues with the keyboard whereby I would press the spacebar too early in a word. This is due to not pressing the letter keys down firmly enough. After adjusting my finger pressure while typing, I have been able to avoid this problem for the most part. The pressure I am applying to the keys is just a hair more than I am used to, but it is something that doesn't cause a major inconvenience. The backlight on the keyboard is excellent, not too bright or too dim at any one moment.
The fingerprint reader took several tries to set up, mostly because there is a discrepancy between the lenovo fingerprint software and the integrated Windows 8 security fingerprint setting. By installing my index finger for login on both programs, I was able to successfully unlock the computer from sleep with a swipe of my finger. I am really impressed by the integration of a light on the sensor. When my print isn't accepted the first time, an amber color light flashes on site. Its easier to just look at the light than have to switch my glance back to the monitor after every swipe (like my previous HP laptop). Upon a successful swipe, a lime color light flashes on the reader.
The screen on the device meets my expectations in every way. The display is IPS which is required for accurate photo editing, and it is LED which makes it very power efficient. Viewing angles are fine, but they could be a little better. Brightness is excellent, but the initial settings have Auto Brightness enabled. On this setting, pumping the brightness up to "100%" really means 100% of what the Auto Brightness function deems appropriate for the current ambient light. To have full manual control, Auto Brightness must be disabled. This results in a much brighter screen with beautiful whites, deep blacks, etc. This is a 300nit display so brightness is very well addressed. As a side note, the laptop was shipped with what appears to be an installed screen protector. There are several holes around the microphones and camera, and a tiny seam along the edge of the screen. The protector is virtually unnoticeable, so I'm leaving it on for the time being. It is much cleaner than any other factory installed laptop screen protector (or film) than I've ever seen (no bubbles, peel-off tabs, or misalignment).
Cooling on the device is good, but it did not exceed my expectations. On power saver mode, the bottom of the laptop is cool to the touch except the back right corner. To the touch the corner feels as warm as something that's been in the sun for 5 minutes or so which is excellent. I have a temp gun so I'll have to check specifics later. On high performance mode, heat significantly increases. Most of the bottom of the laptop heats up even if no intensive tasks are being run. If the laptop is on my lap, I prefer it to be in power saver mode for this reason.
Battery life is good for such a small laptop. I have 8 hours of back to back classes and I type notes basically the whole time. With this laptop, it is entirely possible to go that full period without a charger. So far I have done this twice. The settings I use are Wifi off, low brightness, and I enable high contrast mode in accessibility center so the glaring white of OneNote doesn't blind me during the film screenings.
Webcam looks great for google hangouts, and the microphones are the most sensitive I've ever used. They can pick up the voice of someone to the side and across the room with great clarity.
Overall the weight and feel of the laptop is very pleasing. Such a light weight for its size, and it feels solid to the touch and doesn't flex the slightest when handled different ways (carbon fiber ++). When compared to a macbook air, it is nearly identical in size and weight. However, I find typing on the lenovo is much more pleasant because the front edge of the palm rest isn't sharp enough to dig into my hands.
    Software
The Lenovo Solution software (pinned to taskbar upon installation) is easy to use and responsive (unlike similar HP suites). I am actually going to rely on this software for updates instead of disabling it.
For the first few days of use, there was a touch keyboard toolbar button pinned to my start bar that would appear again even after disabling it. I researched the problem and it was permanently removed from the taskbar by uninstalling the touchpad driver and reinstalling it. Odd.
The adaptive row of keys is a good idea, but it is not as responsive as I'd like. When using the visual gestures or dragon voice control, there is significant lag between pressing the adaptive key and the program actually running. Each time, a lenovo window appears and it takes several mouse clicks to get to a functioning state for each button. One thing I am VERY disappointed about is the lack of any play/pause/stop/next/previous buttons for the adaptive row to use with a media player. These buttons are necessary, and not having them is unacceptable in my opinion.
Touch responsiveness is liquid smooth in both power saver and high performance modes. Zooming in on bing maps, drawing with all ten fingers, swiping through metro - all a delightfully lag-free experience.
Windows 8 - ahhhhhh. This is my first device to run windows 8, and it's alright. It'll take some getting used to, but from my experience so far it is responsive and useful in its design. I really want to be able to pin a firefox link to my start screen, but it seems like all I can do is pin the firefox app instead.
As mentioned in a previous post, there are several issues with programs that aren't adapted to the ultra high res display. That discussion can be found here.
The sleeve I purchased for this machine was the "V7 Ultra Protective Sleeve for 13.3-Inch Ultrabook and Notebook". The fit is great (the slightest bit loose on the ends) and the quality is above par for such a low price. I spilled a significant amount of apple juice on the case just yesterday (shakes head) and it protected the notebook well.
    Overall Experience:
I'm pleased with my purchase. High price point? YES. For that amount I think the RAM should be at least 16gb and the SSD could be 500gb. Overall it is a pleasure to use and look at. Honestly so many things are right about this machine, it just allows me to focus on my work and stop worrying about my battery level or my trackpad glitching or the CPU overheating or lag or other petty issues that other notebooks make you deal with. That's what I like - its a smooth connection between me and getting things done while away from my desktop.
I haven't edited video on it yet, so that will come in a few weeks. I'm planning on buying an external drive to hold the files while I edit, then just plug it into my desktop when I get home ready to render.

    How's the new clickpad?
Does the keyboard flex under reasonable pressure?
Is the adaptive bar actually a pixel-based LCD or just a series of predefined patterns like the really old LCD displays?
The "new" clickpad is very slick. The texture is good but just a little too rubbery for my taste. In comparison with my brother's old T series, I prefer the X1.
Under reasonable pressure, absolutely not. The amount of force it takes for me to flex it is something I'd never do under normal use. It feels very solid in my opinion.
Upon a close inspection, the adaptive touch bar appears to be the old LCD type. I really want those media keys.

  • My MAC is running very slow and i am a complete novice and don't know what to do. i have had my Mac since 2008 and its probably in a mess. if you can help i would be grateful. EtreCheck version: 1.9.15 (52) Report generated 8 September 2014 09:09:26

My MAC runs very slow. Rainbow wheel every time i try to go somewhere. Im a complete MAC novice. Only really use it for iTunes and email. the odd document here and there. The odd spreadsheet. Was brought up on a PC. I would imagine my system is in  mess. I think i downloaded that Mackeeper which i have just discovered was not a good idea. I found a thread about EtreCheck and it suggested i posted the report of my machine which i have done.I only have 2GB of space. Not sure how much i have left. My wife keeps putting photos on here like they are going out of fashion. Bought the machine in 2008 because everybody said you have a MAC. I've never really got to grips with it but at least it worked. Now it does not run very well at all. That spinning wheel is driving me mad. HELP please, never ever used a forum light this either so please go gentle on me. Cheers Paul

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • ?intel iris drivers on macbook pro retina 15" 2014

hi all, i need help i'm lost
it's been 3 days trying to install the intel iris graphic card drivers for the iris 5200 that is shipped with nvidia 750m on the macbook pro 15" retina 2014 and i'm not able to install the drivers.
i installed the preview version of win10 and i rolled back to the preview version of 8.1 both 64bit
and there is something weird, because my bootcamp is only able to install a preview windows version, even having a pro version with product key of 8.1, at the end of the installation, windows say that the changes on my computer can't be saved, so no working windows 8.1 pro
as you are aware, bootcamp download the intelLegacyHdGraphics64.exe together with all other drivers like the nvidia one.. but only the iris drivers will be not installed. the error message is always the same: this computer does not meet the minimum requirement for installing the software.
so, i went to intel site and i downloaded all available drivers, the intel SDK for ocl applications... 2014.exe, the "opencl runtime 14.2x64. package.. installed correctly.
what i'm not able to install are all drivers i could find on the site for the iris.
    Intel® Download Center
but i'm getting always this message: this computer does not meet the minimum requirement for installing the software.
the nvidia 750 works as expected, and i did try everything to install the iris drivers.
i also tried to uninstal the nvidia drivers also using the device manager, not just simply disabling it.
and after booting again.. the iris is not listed in the device manager, just the microsoft default display. and trying to install the drivers manually failed too, but that was expectable since there is no intel iris menu from which to pick manually the drivers.
if i try to install using the compatibility tool i get the message that the os is not supported
    I'm lost lost lost
did someone try to install them? maybe had luck under a win7? or it is a lost war?

I Want to use luxrender and luxmark on windows too
the benchmark score of the iris 5200 in osx mode is 4880 while the score of the nvidia is 900/1100
that is a huge difference in speed
I am unable to search http://www.luxrender.net/luxmark/ for benchmark data. Is there another way to get to these numbers? If you use the nVidia that is currently exposed to windows, do you run into any issues for Rendering?
Edited: on my acer running win7, i disabled the intel graphic card for the sake of Nvidia 330m from bios, and it works
this should be possible in win 8.1 too? as i know those setting aren't anymore available as bios mode.
is there a way to unhide the iris 5200 and permanently disabling the nvidia 750 in windows?
You may want to start by looking http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1658931.
btw maybe you can answer to this. Running luxmark in yosemite, when i benchmark using cpu, iris, or cpu+ iris the fun becomes noisy as it should, but if i benchmark just the nvidia card the fun doesn't start. and this should be not normal at all.
This seems to be normal behavior from my experience. The integrated GPU (CPU+Iris) produces much more heat than the discrete nVidia. If you do not have a case on your MBP, put your palm on the bottom panel, and run both tests. You can also use something like iStat to look at the temperatures of various components while running tests.

  • Is KVM VGA Passthrough Possible on Macbook Pro Mid 2014?

I've been using Arch on and off for a couple years on different hardware, and this time I'm trying to get it to work semi-flawlessly on my mid 2014 Macbook Pro. My Linux skills are meager, so I need some help understanding if VGA passthrough is possible on this machine, and if it is, how to set it up. I have hope that it might work after reading this blog and the Arch forums. An outline of my current setup follows. I will also document progress and research for anyone who might want to try this in the future.
Here are the specifications for this machine:
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB, Nvidia GT 750M 2 GB
I have successfully dual-booted Mac OS X Yosemite and Arch with EFI on a btrfs partition using this blog and the wiki as starting points. Somlo's research also helped. All the basic functionality works (networking, WiFi, etc.), and I am able to boot the physical Arch partition as a Virtualbox VM with the help of the wiki. However, I'm having trouble with getting the integrated Intel graphics to work. The following command:
    lspci | grep VGA
prints the Nvidia card specifications, and nothing about the Intel graphics.
Reading this blog, it looks like someone had to apply a "grub gmux" patch to grub to disable the Nvidia card at boot. I feel uncomfortable installing anything other than the official Arch packages, so I have to know if installing a patched grub is still necessary, and if installing it would still allow me to use VGA passthrough in KVM.
My ambitious to-do list looks like this:
    1. Dual-boot Mac OS X and Arch with btrfs. -done
    2. Setup the physical Arch partition to boot in Virtualbox. -done
    3. Get Intel graphics to work on Arch ideally with OpenGL support. -done
    4. Get Enlightenment working as the desktop environment on Arch. -done
    5. Get Qemu+KVM to boot off the physical Mac OS X partition. -tbd
    6. Enable VGA passthrough for Mac OS X from Qemu+KVM. -tbd
    7. Install Windows as a VM in Qemu+KVM. -tbd
    8. Enable VGA passthrough for Windows from Qemu+KVM. -tbd
    9. Work and do research on Mac OS X from Arch, play hardcore 3D games on WIndows from Arch, play around with Arch, and live happily ever after. -tbd
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance for any hints/input.
    Edit:
The Ubuntu forums has something about getting the two graphics cards to be recognised by using `refind` instead of `grub`. I was able to set up `refind` to boot using the `efi-stub`, but:

still only shows the Nvidia card. The boot options suggested by this blog did not change anything. However, this very helpful discussion led me to this on-going project. I patched the kernel according the instructions in the said project's `readme`, and Arch is now able to see the two graphics cards and an extra Intel audio controller.

Also, I was able to fire up Enlightenment using the Intel graphics card and `0xbb`'s `gpu-switch` script. After using some post-installation tips from this, the computer started getting hot. I followed this thread to get it back to normal.
    Edit:
So I finally got some time to experiment on this. I ended up installing Gnome 3 after trying out Enlightenment, KDE Plasma 5, and Cinnamon. I thought Gnome 3 and Cinnamon had the best Hi-DPI support of those four. Cinnamon's look was too much trouble for me to configure, so I ended up choosing Gnome 3.
To achieve the graphics card passthrough, I tried setting up and starting a VM in `virt-manager`, but starting the VM would cause Arch to freeze. Finally, I tried following the instructions on the wiki, this thread, and the Arch forums. I haven't yet tried booting the Windows installer, but the following are the steps I took so far:
    1. Uninstall all `nvidia` drivers from my system.
    2. Blacklist the `nouveau` driver.
    3. Add `pci-stub` to the modules array in `mkinitcpio.conf`.
    4. Recreate the `initramfs`.
    5. Add `intel_iommu=on pci-stub.ids=10de:0fe9,10de:0e1b,8086:156c` to the `refind.conf` `options` line.
    - These three IDs are ones for the Nvidia graphics, Nvidia sound, and the "Intel Corporation Device" (probably the HDMI port, or something related to the
ethernet card), which belong to the same "IOMMU group". What was curious was that a Gigabit ethernet controller would appear in the IOMMU group iff I had
an ethernet cable connected to my thunderbolt port. I don't know if I have to add the ID for this, but so far there are no complaints about it in `dmesg`.
    6. Install `ovmf-svn` from the AUR.
    6. Follow the "Binding a device to vfio-pci" section documented at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768.
    7. Follow the "Testing if its working out" section documented at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768.
So far, the test at step 7 is failing -- I get a `vfio-pci 0000:01:00.0: Invalid ROM contents` complaint in `dmesg`, and I see a prompt in the `qemu` window. I'm supposed to be getting a black `qemu` window, and a prompt on an external monitor which I haven't connected yet. I read the comments on this blog about graphics card ROM and EFI compatibility, and it looks like my graphics card ROM can't be read. I also read that the graphics card ROM would only be read once by qemu/KVM and saved as a file for later use, so all I need to do to get around that is pass a snapshot of the ROM of the Nvidia GT 750M card to qemu/KVM. Apparently, "You can download the 750m rom files directly from Lenovo's website on the support page" according to this thread, but all I see is this. I will continue hunting around for a ROM file for this graphics card.

It`s not beacuse of the case. I have the same problem with a macbook pro retina 15 late 2013 (I7 - 2.3 Ghz, 16 GB, 512 SSD, GT750M) with windows 8.1 on bootcamp. The temperature is higher than yosemite. It gets easily at 80 celsius in a demanding game, while on yosemite it barely reaches 55-60 under heavy load. It`s beacuse of windows, and these are the temperatures, I got the same average 55-60 in windows and 45 celsius in yosemite. I read on the forums and I tried evend with a cooler pad. But it doesn`t seem to be any improvement with lowering the temperature in windows.

Margriet Bruggeman: "This script can be useful, although typically migration scenarios are more complex than this. Having said that, I probably end up using this script some time in in the future"

I have IMac OSX 10.9.4, 4GB,Processor 3.06 with Intell2Duo. I would like to check for Malware. I run a TechTool Pro 6 every month and that comes up great.
When check how much memory I am using, with only Safari open I am using 3.9 and more of her 4.0 memory. She is very. very slow in processing. I had 4000
trash to clean out and it took her over an hour to expel. Also for some reason Safari will not allow me to click on a link, in my G-mail, and let it go to the page.
It has a sign saying a pop-up blocker is on and will not let me do it. I must open the stamp to look at my e-mails and if I have redirected link now I can do it.
I have not changed my preferences so where is this pop-up blocker?
I have looked at preferences on Safari and Google, which I do not understand Google, and do not see where this blocker could be.
Malware is something I want to make sure is not on my computer. Tech Tool Pro 6 is all I know of and it does not detect Malware.
    Help.

  • Restoring a SQL Server 2005 DB to a SQL Server 2014 install, is there any way to prevent it from being upgraded

Does anyone know if there is a flag I can use to prevent a SQL Server 2005 database from being upgraded to SQL 2014 when it is restored to a 2014 instance?
Don't ask why, I just need to know if this is possible or if 2005/8 DB's are required to be upgraded if they are going to run on SQL 2012/2014 instances. The documentation seems to say this is so, I just want to verify that.

First: You cannot directly restore a 2005 database to
2014. MS supports migration over 3 SQL Server version steps; means you can restore 2005 to 2008/2008R2/2012, but not to 2014. You have to do a migration step between.
Olaf I was looking for this today, because I'm working with a new customer that have SQL 2005 and I have SQL 2014. And needed to restore a backup form the production server in my test server.
When I read what you write I think, oh no!! I have to install SQL 2012 in my server. But that it's not an option for me, and I say let me try to restore the DB first in 2014 and if not work install 2012.
You can restore a 2005 database to 2014 directly, and it works.
For reference the version number in the servers 2005 (9.0.4035 SP3) and 2014 (12.0.2000 RTM)
This is not related in any way to the original question that you answered (the file format will be upgraded to the new motor, that is sure).
I put this lines because in the future there will be some people searching about if possible to restore a 2005 DB to 2014, and like me will read your lines and think it's not possible and that can make a decision to buy 2012 and not 2014 to that new server they
    will migrate.

  • Lack of BT products since 20th Jan 2014 first day ...

I ordered BT infinity2 (because I was told I could get infinity 2 speed) the first issue I found out that I can only get infinity 1.
Along with the infinity I ordered the Phone line and TV on the 20th of Jan 2014, it is now the 31 Mar 2014 they have just got the pone line sorted, and when my wife said fine now fix the broadband and TV after he wascshown the issue my wife was told we need an engineer for the broadban and an other engineer for the TV. I was informed by BT engineering that they do not have enineers that can do all 3 products is this not a waste of resources and manpower.?
besides all that I have been informed you cant cancel your BT contract untill the engineering team cant fix it, well I think 20th Jan until now is long enough and they still wont let me cancel. Myself and my wife have lost money by taking time off waitingvfor BT and some of them only to find that they havent been booked only a line test,I ask for an engineer for a Saturday and get told they dont work Saturdays,  that is funny how an enginer was at my house lsst weekend trying to fix the issue but only making it worse.
Now I have now raised it with ombudsmen and an email to a UK team member to pass to Managment.
If no reply tomorrow then it will be a letter to the CEO Gavin Paterson to be signed for on delivery

  • I downloaded the new InDesign 2014 and now it won't open on my computer. i run on a Windows machine. Has anyone had this happen?

I really just need to know how to get it to open. I have created files in CC that now won't open, saying they were created in a newer version... which they weren't. i thought the remedy would be to download InDesign 2014, but i can't even get it to open on my computer.  Any advise is welcomed.

The CC installers often fail to set permissions correctly on the preference folders. Are you getting an error message to that effect?
If so, find the folders -- they're hidden so you need to set Explorer to show hidden files, then see Replace Your Preferences for the locations of the TWO folders you need to fix. Start at the Adobe level and make sure both your user and System have full control, and apply it to subfolders as well.
