Centrino 2 on MacBook Pro
Hi,
Does anyone knows if Apple has any plans on adopting soon the new Centrino 2 (Launched 14/07/08) on MacBook Pro?

If you read the Intel information then you would know that the Centrino label refers to a complete chipset platform. The Centrino 2 platform consists of a faster clocked version of the Penryn processor together with a new GPU chip, the GMA4500, and WiMax chip. These would not likely be used in a Macbook Pro together. The faster Penryn processor might be used for a future speed bump depending upon Apple's plan - which we know nothing about.
The reason Apple does not use the Centrino label is because they do not use the Centrino chipset which is required by Intel in order to use the Centrino branding.

Laptops based on new chips deliver slight improvements over Core Duo

Eight months ago, Intel rocked the mobile processor world with its first dual-core CPUs, which boosted the speed of a notebook performing two tasks simultaneously by 30 percent. Now comes Core Duo’s successor, Core 2 Duo, accompanied by Intel claims of even better performance and support for the coming era of 64-bit computing. Should you kick yourself for buying that Core Duo laptop earlier this year?
PC World tests suggest you shouldn’t sweat it too much. Notebooks get only a small performance boost with Intel’s new processor, formerly code-named Merom, and battery life appears to remain about the same.
Currently, Core 2 Duo mobile chips are only found in Windows-based laptops. However, Intel’s Core Duo line powers both Apple’s MacBook and MacBook Pro offerings, and it’s widely assumed that the Core 2 Duo will find its way into upcoming versions of those laptops; thus, a look at how the Core 2 Duo compares to its predecessor—even in a Windows machine—should give Mac users some idea of what to expect from future hardware releases.
The five new Core 2 Duo mobile chips (Intel earlier released five Core 2 Duo desktop processors) are the latest descendants of Intel’s Centrino-brand processor and wireless chip set combo.
Core 2 Duo comes in two lines: the T5000, which includes the 1.66-GHz T5500 and 1.83-GHz T5600, and the T7000, featuring the 2-GHz T7200, the 2.16-GHz T7400, and the 2.33-GHz T7600. Intel isn't saying when we'll see a version of the Core 2 Duo for ultraportables.
Core Duo vs. Core 2
The Core 2 Duo chip has many of the same features as its Core Duo predecessor: a 667MHz frontside bus, the 945 chip set, the 3945ABG wireless chip set, and similar clock speeds. The two biggest improvements are the doubling of Level 2 cache to 4MB in the T7000 line, and support for 64-bit processing. The latter brings Intel back on par with AMD’s Turion 64 X2 chip and means users can take advantage of upcoming 64-bit applications. Core Duo can't do 64-bit computing.
Core Duo 2 notes for all purposes
PC World tested three shipping notebooks with different Core 2 Duo processors and 1GB of memory: a $1,906 Dell M1210 with a 2GHz T7200 chip, a $2,059 Gateway M685-E with a 2.16GHz T7400 chip, and a $1,499 HP Pavilion dv6000t with a 1.83GHz T5600 chip.
The biggest performance increase over notebooks outfitted with same-speed Core Duo CPUs was only 7 percent, enough to shave a few seconds off of day-to-day operations but not much more.
The Windows XP Media Center Edition-equipped Dell M1210 turned in a WorldBench 5 score of 102, 5 percent better than the 97 earned by the average Media Center Edition notebook using a 2GHz Core Duo T2500. The Gateway M685-E scored 109, 7 percent better than t 2.16GHz Core Duo T2600-equipped HP Compaq nx9420’s score of 101. The HP Pavilion dv6000t scored 101, 6 percent better than a 1.83GHz Core Duo T2400-equipped Toshiba Satellite P105-S921’s 95 with the same 2MB of Level 2 cache.
In sum, Core 2 Duo systems are a tad faster than Core Duo notebooks at handling everything from mainstream applications such as spreadsheets and e-mail to watching DVD movies. And they are just as impressive (and significantly faster than Pentium-Ms) at juggling multiple tasks, like ripping a CD while surfing the Net, for instance.
Battery life a washout
Core 2 doesn’t appear to significantly affect battery life. The Dell M1210, a 12.1-inch multimedia wide-screen model, lasted the longest: 4 hours and 23 minutes with its 9-cell battery upgrade. The Gateway M685-E, a bulky 17-inch wide-screen, lasted 3 hours and 41 minutes thanks to a 12-cell battery upgrade. That’s better than the 2.3 hours we got with a 2GHz Core Duo T2500 version of the M685-E tested earlier this year, but the older unit had a less powerful 8-cell battery upgrade.
The HP Pavilion dv6000t, a 15.4-inch multimedia wide-screen unit and the only one in the group equipped with a standard six-cell battery, ran out of juice after only 2 hours and 10 minutes. An HP Pavilion dv2000t equipped with a 2.16GHz Core Duo T2600 that we also tested this month lasted over 7 hours—but that notebook had a 14.1-inch wide-screen display and its battery was twice as strong as the dv6000t’s.
Intel is pricing the Core 2 Duo the same as Core Duo chips, which means the new processors won’t drive up overall notebook prices.
Get a deal on older duos
In fact, shoppers can soon expect a fire sale on Core Duo notebooks, said Samir Bhavnani, director of research for Current Analysis in San Diego. “It’s going to be hard for people to tell the difference between retail Core Duo and Core 2 Duo because the names and the processor speeds look so alike, so you’re going to see Intel get very aggressive with Core Duo pricing.”
Given also that Core 2 Duo’s support for 64-bit applications won’t be important for at least another year, consumers should think long and hard about paying a premium to get a Core 2 notebook instead of a Core Duo. “Buying a 64-bit capable Core 2 Duo notebook right now is like buying a Playstation 3 when there won’t be any games for another two years,” Bhavnani said. -

This is my first mac, and must say for top dollar machine isn't been an underwhelming experience and a bit worried about starting a fire when doing serious work.
Any advice for both issue would be great before I start requesting a refund for what seems to be a bit of lemon and frustrating experienceok flash does that i mean when you load a flash based video the fan kicks off and the MBP overheats

Any real difference between a 1.83 and 2.0 MacBook Pro?
Hi all,
I have recently bought a MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz model. It was on sale at my local computer store and I thought it was a good find, as it was brand new and was selling for £1099, a £300 saving on the 2.0 GHz model. Before I start using it, I just wanted to know if anyone knew if there was a real performance difference between the two and should I have paid the extra £300 to get the 2.0 GHz machine?
I only ask this, as I know that over time Apple sometimes tweak the machine to improve it and (after talking with someone at Apple), I've been told that there have been 5 or 6 changes to the inner workings (or revisions as they called them), and I wondered if this changed the performance or if it was just minor improvements regarding heat and noise and so on.
To finish, does anyone have any speculation as if this is a good time to buy a MacBook Pro with the introduction of the Core 2 Duo chips in the new iMacs?

I thought we were passed the marketing gimmicks and the clock speed race, but I guess not.
Clock speed doesn't tell you anything about the performance of a CPU. Intel almost ran themselves into the ground by trying to pump up their clock speeds and feeding that tripe to the masses. AMD focused on a solid architecture that created a robust chip. As a result AMD took the lead in performance and stability.
Intel's greatest achievement to date has been the PIII Coppermine. So good was this architecture that they have gone back to it. The Centrinos are based off the Coppermines as are the dual cores.
The point of the story is that clock speed means nothing. Save your cash and put it to better use by getting a 7200 rpm drive or more RAM. -
Week 27 MacBook Pro 17" - Very happy so far
I finally took the plunge and got a 17" MacBook Pro. I went with 2 GB of memory instead of the stock 1 GB. I also choose the 120 GB 5400 RPM drive and the glossy display over the matte display. So far, I am extremely pleased with this new system.
* No weird noises can be heard. Occassionally, I'll hear the very light hum of the cooling fan but that is it. Much quieter than my Gateway notebook whose cooling fan was quite loud when it kicked in.
* The glossy display is very nice to look at and the colors are extremely vibrant. I don't work outside much with my MacBook Pro so the glare will be a non-issue for me.
* The system does get very warm under heavy load but no worse that the Gateway notebook this is replacing. One evening with XP running inside Parallels, I worked with my MacBook Pro on my bare legs with no discomfort.
* Windows XP Pro inside Parallels is very fast (faster my Gateway 1.6 GHz Centrino based notebook with 1 GB of RAM). I gave the VM 768 MB of RAM to play with and XP just hums along quite nicely.
* Battery life appears to be good. I ran on battery one night while running XP inside Parallels and if I had let it run until the battery gave out, my rough guess is that the battery would have lasted 3 hours.
I have only had this for 4 days but so far, I would have to say that it's the best computer I have ever owned.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 in Macbook Pro
During installation of Adobe Photoshop CS2, the installer runs and freezes in the midst. There is no way of installing Adobe Photoshop CS2 with intel processor. Full reinstallation of Mac OSX doesn't help. Running disk utility doesn't help either. Problems occurred with or without installing of Apple Security Update 2006-003(intel). Any comments?
Edwin, thanks for the input, and I do apologize. You are right. I should be easier with which to live. There are two major problems out there right now. That is also part of the problem. We are not used to two problems in our domain.
I own 20 Mac's in my office, and I only did these updates on my MacBook Pro 17 inch and my G5 Dual 2.3 Ghz machine that has two 30-inch Cinema Displays. I had both problems on my MacBook Pro, and the G5 had the reboot glitch. I won't update the other machines untill these problems are resolved by the OEMs.
Of the two major hiccups out there, this link indicates Quicktime's update is the source of the inability to restart machines, fixed by deleting startup items, I believe. I had this reboot problem also.

Accrobat's freezing the system, the question at hand, is a result of the Security Update, fixed by rolling back to a pre-Security Update state using Archive & Install re-installation of the OS. Archive & Install does not erase your files or network settings.
Apple has released two products that fouled these systems. Bad Quality Assurance I think. I am not sure if the Security Update problem is an Apple or an Adobe software problem, i.e., Adobe may have not followed some software guidance. I am certain both companies are aware of the problem, but I am uncertain of the fix for Acrobat. We probably do need to update for security, but I can't live without Acrobat. So I will wait it out without the Security Update. -

My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
- My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:

I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:

So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ? Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.

And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a mac-model device ID string that specifies yes. An unnecessary hurdle. -

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example. Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized. Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?
So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro random freezing issue
Hi all,
I had a 2009 13.3" Unibody Macbook and last week purchased a 13.3" Macbook Pro. I had installed 4GB of RAM in the MB myself, and it had worked fine for the month I owned it.
I backed up my MB with an external USB hard drive using Time machine, restored from this backup on my MBP and moved the 4GB RAM over.
When using the MBP I get random freezes lasting between 1 and 3 seconds, occuring every 5 to 30 minutes.
Could someone please advise a good way to diagnose this problem further? I am guessing it is not the RAM as it worked fine whilst in the MB.I have an update!
I made an appointment with a local Apple Genius Bar and talked to a technian. He said it was neither the RAM nor the Hard Drive at fault.
His only thoughts were that a software issue was the root cause. I have been doing some serious investigating this morning and figured it out. Viewing system.log in Console shows:
SMS::infiniteIntTimerEventHandler ERROR: we have infinite interrupts, disabling
At exactly 5 minute intervals. These correlate with the freezes (to the second).
SMS refers to the Apple Sudden Motion Sensor. I disabled this by doing "sudo pmset -a sms 0" in Terminal, rebooted and everything is fine.
I have no idea why the SMS thinks the Macbook is falling every 5 minutes, but when it occures the hard drive heads are locked down to prevent damage, which is a perfect reason as to why iTunes would crash but Spotify (streaming internet music) does not.

I did install EFI 1.7 update. I did not use the Migration assistance. At some point I will do a fresh install then pick and choose parts from a backup rather than using a full Time Machine Restore. This could still have been the root cause of the issue, but it is hard to tell.

Mid-2010 MacBook Pro stuck in clamshell mode?
I asked a similar question to this earlier, but now the problem has been more consistent. I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that I often use with an external display, plugged in via mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. The problem is, after I've unplugged my macbook to "go mobile" and am away from my display, if I ever have to restart my computer or boot into Windows 7, my computer will think it's still in clamshell mode. The screen will stay dark, and if the lid is closed, the white light will stay on steadily, not pulsing. However, if I plug into my external display when this is happening, the external display works fine and I have a display again. When I look up my displays while connected to an external display while this is happening, my internal display isn't even listed in the system report; it's like it doesn't exist! And this is especially a problem now as I am away on a 3 week school related trip.
I have not been able to consistently reproduce this problem. Sometimes it restarts normally, sometimes I restart it and get the gray + apple logo screen that then goes dark, and sometimes the internal display just never turns on. The problem doesn't seem to be related to an OS, as it happens when booting into Windows 7 OR mountain lion 10.8.5. I've tried resetting PRAM mutliple times as well as performing an SMC reset multiple times, and neither has helped. This even happened when I was booting into a mountain lion install USB, as I thought maybe a fresh install would help. I've seen many other forums discussing a similar issue, but none described quite like mine.
What gives?? How can I get my macbook to restart normally? I really don't want to have to make a repair, even though it's looking like a hardware problem. My computer is one month after Apple Care has expired, and I can't afford a pricey repair as I'm a very in debt student who only has a MacBook because his school gave it to him in the first place. Reset your NVRAM and test to see if that resolves your issues. Typically that will resolve video, volume, startup disk selection, and kernel panic issues.

Mid-2010 Macbook Pro Screen Flicker Pixel Seizure
Not sure how else to describe the problem, but I hope the title helps!
I have a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro. I noticed in the last month or so, my screen would flicker. But not the entire screen. Just certain areas, like the pixels would jump/lag, as if it it would jump to the correct position. I don't know what's the word for it: glitter, pixel, flicker, seizure. I mean, that what it looks like. It actually hurts my eyes.
I don't know what could be the problem or if anyone knows what's going on. It's just certain pixels (random on the screen, but usually right in the middle) that get "stuck" and half a second later, jump. Not sure what the proper word is, but if anyone could identify it, that'll be great.
Safari, Chrome, and Word are the applications I use, and I've seen it all three programs. It's becoming a lot more noticeable and frequent now, especially if I switch programs or if I'm loading a new page.
The MBP is a tank, but I've been considering buying a new MacBook, preferably the Air, until this MBP kicks it, so if anyone has estimation on its shelf life, that'll be great (My 2005 Powerbook G4 barely made it through 4 years!). The warranty on the MBP just expired last year.

It only gives me the option to disable Automatic graphics switching where it should give the better battery life or higher performance options. Do I have something disabled that gets rid of that option? It's the same under the Battery or Power Adapter options.
I'm going to take it to a genius but I'm wondering from reading other forums that maybe one of my RAM slots is bad. I want to have a play but will the genius know if I've opened it up and then possibly refuse it? If it is bad RAM then I can fix that myself without having to travel 70 miles to my nearest Apple Store. Is there a seal that I would break that would give away the fact that I've opened it up?

I paid more than 500 Euro at a Premium Reseller called mStore in Kiel (Germany) to replace it, because the display stayed black after booting. My Macbook didn't even have a single external mark or scratch on the housing. I accepted it and said to myself if it is working again, it is alright. But less than two month later a vertical line is drawing from the top frame to the bottom (see photo). The line is narrow, it is just one pixel, but it is really annoying because it is always in sight. I went to the same reseller and asked what to do, they recommend a second repair attempt for again 500 Euro. In less then two month I cannot afford +1000 Euro for a laptop with an actual value of about 1100 Euro.
What is the best thing to do now?
I am really disappointed by Apple's quality. I am 24 years old and everybody in my family is using Apple computers since I can think back. The first time I could call a Mac my own was when I was 13.
When I graduated from school I was 19 and worked in a hospital to finance a new iBook G4. I had this one for about four years and it has been traveling with me through New Zealand and Asia for more than a year. I never had any issue with it, even when I dropped it from the top bank in a dormitory. It is still alive and working fine.
When I started studying the time came to buy an Intel Mac (15'' Macbook Pro, anti glare) and again I was very happy with the quality. I have also been a huge advocate for Apple products and was confidently suggesting them to friends and family. But today I feel disappointed by the brand.

MarcoI had the same problem on a display MBP 15" in 2010, and it is a display problem recognised by Apple.
It was covered by the warranty.
If you do nothing, the number of vertical pixel lines will increase over time.
