CG output - 720p or 1080i

I am working in computer graphics, so I am rendering a sequence of images to be edited in FCE HD. 30fps, going to digital tape for projection on theatre screens.
I've determined that hd video will be fine. Now I need to determine which type, 720p or 1080i. Since I'm not coming from a camera, that isn't an issue. But I do choose the size of my renders, 1920 X 1080 or 1280 X 720.
Any input on the pros and cons of using either one? I assume that bigger is better, but what does interlacing or progressive scan really mean in practical terms. Does one limit tape options? Should I render the larger size, so I can do either?

Different film festivals accept different formats for exhibition: miniDV, digibeta, DVCAM DVCpro. So it could be anything! Most seem to accept DVD. So I would like to be prepared to dub down as needed.
So, I don't plan on going as high as D-1, and I haven't studied the costs involved, but perhaps digibeta or DVCAM.
To get it there I will probably take my hard drive to a facility which could output it for me, whether it's post house, or a friend with a production facility.

    In FCP 5.1.4? No, not without rendering one. Sequence settings match one codec, so anything else will need to be rendered. FCP 6 solved this..open timeline is available. It also automatically sets the sequence to match the settings of the first clip dropped into it.

  • Mixing 720p and 1080i footage in a sequence

    What's the best choice to edit a movie comprised of clips shot in 720p30 and clips shot in 1080i60? "Upscale and interlace" the 720p footage or "downscale and deinterlace" the 1080i footage?
    Using easy setup, one has the choice to create either a 720p or a 1080i project, and when adding a clip to a sequence in this project, the clip is automatically converted to the project's format. Therefore, this is something that needs to be decided ahead of time. Or is it possible to change the project's settings after attempting to export the sequence if the result is disappoining?

    All right, but assuming that I have the choice of output format (and I do), what is most likely yo result in the best overall result? Interpolating (720p output) or extrapolating (1080i)? Intuitively, I would think that interpolating is most likely to result in less artifacts than extrapolating. So on this measure, a 720p output of a mixture of 720p and 1080i footage would be more recommendable than a 1080i output.
    The good news is that you are saying I can change this in my sequence at any time.

    I have a three-camera shoot coming up with two 1080p cameras. 
    The third camera can be either 720p or 1080i. 
    There's no way we can upgrade the third camera to 1080p.
    I'm being asked to give a recommendation on 720p or 1080i.
    So which format (720p or 1080i) mixes better with 1080p?
    Which one will output better to a DVD?
    I'll be cutting in FCPX.

    Thanks Al.  Wow - it's been so long since I've recorded a DVD video, that I had forgotten about the SD restriction. 
    Setting aside the DVD issue, what would you reccomend would look better online when streamed in HD?
    1080p material mixed in with 1080i or 780p?

    The TV is a Samsung, 50" 1080P. I just got a new HD cable box from TW, and it offers two options for resolution; 720P and 1080i.

    Should also be an option that lets you match the resolution of the content you've tuned into.
    Resolution should be 720p for 720p content, and 1080i for 1080i content.  If you force the receiver to 1080i, it'll scale 720p and interlace it to 1080i, and then the TV will take 1080i and deinterlace it.  You don't want that intermediary step for 720p content if you can avoid it.
    Similarly, you don't want 1080i content to get deinterlaced and downscaled to 720p.

    Hello all.  I am doing a commercial and the footage shot and the timeline is 720p.  The TV station we are using wants 1080i/60.  How can I do that in compressor?  I did change it to 1080 but don't see how to indicate that I want 1080i.  Also, compressor wouldn't let me change the frame rate either.  Thanks in advance!

    23.98 to 29.97 via Compressor:
    1. Drop clips you want to convert into Compressor
    2. In Compressor, select your video then right click and choose NEW TARGET WITH SETTING > APPLE > FORMATS > QUICKTIME > APPLE PRORES 422 (HQ). Or pick whatever codec you like to work with.
    3. Click on that newly created compression setting to open it in the Inspector window. Click the Encoder tab. Click the Video: (Settings…) button. Make the frame rate 29.97. Check the interlaced box. Set it's drop down menu to Bottom field first. Click OK.
    4. Click the Frame Controls tab. Set Frame Controls to On. Set Output Fields to Bottom first. Leave Deinterlace on Fast. Leave Adaptive Details checked. Leave Rate Conversion set to Fast. Leave the Set Duration to: on 100% and make sure it's radio button is selected and NOT the "so source frames play at 29.97 fps" button.
    5. Make changes to the Filters or Geometry sections as needed. Those settings listed above are the ones critical to getting the proper 3:2 pulldown added.
    6. Submit the compression, then bring the resulting video back into Final Cut Pro. Place it in a 29.97 timeline and make sure you watch it on an NTSC monitor to verify that it looks good. If you step through it frame-by-frame you should see the familiar pattern of 2 split/interlaced frames followed by 3 whole frames. This is a very important step. I tried many solutions that looked OK playing back on the computer monitor, but looked terrible on the NTSC monitor.

    I just got FiOS installed today and as I was going through the menu, I noticed that for the video resolution, you are forced to pick a format. Is there a way to set it up so that the STB automatically picks the resolution that the broadcaster has chosen? I don't want to watch everything in 1080i or 720p. I'd like to watch it as the channel has chosen to send the signal

    Unfortunately no.
    My suggestion is to try both and stick with the one that looks best on the most channels that you regularly watch. I have a 720p LCD but the 1080i setting in my DVR provides the best HD picture by just a little bit.
    Also, you have an option you can set for the SD channels (SD Override). I prefer OFF, which means that the SD channels are sent to my TV also using 1080i. This results in a slightly worse SD picture than using 480i or 480p, but eliminates the extremely annoying 2-4 second delay (HDMI re-sync) when switching between HD and SD channels. Again, I suggest you try the various settings and pick the one that you like best (or hate less?)

  • Advice Exporting 720P into 1080i

    Hello
    One of my students has managed to start editing his HDV 1080i 50 footage in 720P 29.98FPS settings. It plays fine for him off the timeline in his Preview window but when trying to export it to HDV 1080i 50 for use in our studio play out system it doesn't work at all.
    I tried exporting it to Apple Pro Res HQ too but still nothing.
    Our play out system is essentially FCP 3 playing through an AJA HD-SDI card into a For-A vision mixer.
    I've been using FCP's Export Conversion process.
    Should I attempt using Compressor?

    You should copy all the content of the timeline he's been working in, and paste it into a timeline with the correct settings. Then you'll have to remove any scaling that was done from editing in a smaller frame size, and any timing alterations from the differing frame rate. Better to do this than to try and fix it on export. Right now you're going through two conversions. Neither one of them ideal.

  • 720p vs 1080i  Simple question.

    I shoot with the JVC 700U which captures in native 720p. I have been told I should shoot in 1080i by some folks. Some of my work is on cable, other on the web. If you have noticed other posts by me, my system has trouble with 720p and I am unable to figure out why. So...pros and cons 1080i vs 720p? Very little of my work is high end, mostly local stuff. I just would like some opinions from you guys. Stay native with 720 or change it up to 1080? Thanks for all of your help.

    I have always been a big fan of 720p. Why? Two reasons, one, many of the 1080 formats, especially when they first came out, were anamorphic, which is a pain in butt to deal with. Second, 1080i is interlaced. Interlacing is so 1950s. Really? Do we still have to to cling to half century old technology? If you can do 1920x1080p30 then go for it, otherwise I don't see the point. Interlacing is a world of hurt for no benefit.

    Winston, I agree with you.
    On old fashioned interlace sets, the 525 line sets, only 480 lines are available for the picture, the rest were for the flyback part of the signal.
    A CRT uses two sets of coils, one vertical set and one horizontal set. The electron beam passes through the magnetic field created by the coils so that it scans back and forth across the screen. As it scans back and forth, it also moves up by the vertical deflection. The scan lines are slightly slanted. After 240 scans across the screen, the signal is blanked out as the beam is deflected back to the bottom of the screen. During the downward deflection, the horizontal deflection makes 22.5 more scans. this makes a total of 262.5 scans.
    The next frame, which is actually the same as the first is scanned, but since the scan starts at the bottom center of the screen instead of the bottom left, the picture is painted a half line higher. So the 480i of analog broadcast is actually only 240 lines of resolution. All of this is based on a TV camera broadcast camera.
    A film camera records 24 pictures per second. In a movie projector, each frame is lit twice so that appears to be at 48 frames per second. The 48 makes the picture steady, our eyes can't detect the flicker. 8mm home movie camera recorded only 16 pictures per second but home projectors used a 6 slot shutter to project each picture 3 times. The 3:2 pill down is a way to match the 24 pictures of a movie film to the 60 frame per second broadcast rate. One picture is shown twice, the next one 3 times.
    Information on how 1080i and 1080p work is a little sketchy, but it appears that 1080i may only be a 540 line picture broadcast twice. If that is true, the 720p would be better than 1080i, and 1080p is better still. Right now, there are no 1080p broadcast sources. As far as broadcast TV is concerned, the TV will sync to either signal. Most TV shows and movies are broadcast in 1080i, but sports events are broadcast in 720p for more clarity.
    I bought a 1080p set, not for now but for future changes. Since I only buy a TV about once every 20 years or so, I didn't want it to be obsolete too soon.

  • Outputting 720p from MacBook Pro to Plasma Screen

    Is that possible?
    Can you output a high-def FCP project directly from a MacBook Pro via the HDMI monitor port? And how? Otherwise I'm back to burning a bad 'ol standard def DVD.

    Be warned...at that point your only option is DIGIAL CINEMA PREVIEW, and that is basically a large CANVAS window...still a lower res proxie image of your footage. Not full quality. Decent, but not the best you can get it.

    I have the same error but i dont know how to thrash the render files and switch off background rendering.

    It depends on the viewing distance and TV size.  What size TV and what will your viewing distance be?
    That said, the price premium for 1080p is so little nowadays that unless you're getting TV around the 32" or smaller range, I would make sure to go for 1080p.

  • Premiere Pro CC and BMD Intensity Pro Video Preview issues

    I know there are many people having issues and confusion surrounding video preview file formats. For the most part, I have not had major problems, except this:
    I'm trying to figure out why PPro doesn't want to output video preview with certain file formats on my Intensity Pro card, specifically 720p media. See below for system specs.
    For the most part, any sequence created at 1080p24 or 30 out to an HDTV (1080i and p) via HDMI plays back fine. My sequence settings will reflect the correct file format as the media within it (usually ProRes).
    When I have to edit a clip that came to me as 720p24, 25, 30, etc, I drop it into a sequence, have it change the settings to match the clip, and voila, I get playback. It would choose I frame only MPEG as the video preview file format. The originating file format doesn't really matter, whether it's h.264 .mp4, or H.264 .mov, or ProRes, etc.
    I've been testing this in different ways, but for the most part, as soon as I drop a 720p clip into a sequence (doesn't matter what format or res), and allow PPro to change the sequence settings to match the clip settings, I get video preview playback initially. Great! But here's the kicker, as soon as I do anything, be that I go to a different sequence that is open, click on a different window such as the source monitor, or adjust audio levels, or drop in another clip (like a custom leader I made that is ProRes 422), I immediately lose video preview. The I/O card is stuck on the last frame it was able to playback, or just black. No matter what I do, I never get the video preview back again.
    If I don't allow PPro to change sequence settings to match clip settings, I don't get any playback at all.
    I have created a 720p sequence, and dropped in the 720p media, which then I don't get any playback at all. I've tried to keep the video dims the same, but change the video preview dims to 1920x1080 and it won't let me.
    This seems to only happen with 720p media being cross converted to 1080p for playback on a 1080p monitor. All 1080p media plays back fine, no matter what the file format is. I have tried both Blackmagic settings in the control panel (System Prefs) set to output 720p to 1080i cross conversion on and off. I still get the same behavior as described above.
    Any ideas is greatly appreciated.

    Finally worked out a solution. I opened Premiere, started a dummy project, and before I imported any media, I went into Project Settings and changed the Renderer to Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA). Voila - now everything works as it's supposed to. Playback is buttery-smooth, and GPU-accelerated transitions render in real-time.
