Changing antennas on WRT54G V8

I noticed on the WRT54G V8 that you can not remove the antennas. What is the purpose of this? How could I use hi-gain/other antennas with the router?
--EDIT
I just saw a thread with the same problem. Answered my question. That is SO stupid!
Thanks!

Yes, you are right...The antennas are not removable...They are both fixed and you cannot replace the antennas...

  • How do i change firewalls on WRT54G, or is there firewalls?

I added a WRT54G wireless to my wired internet and am having trouble playing Madden 08 on PC. Before I installed the wireless router I was able to host games. Since adding the wireless router I am not able to host games. Is there a firewall blocking me from hosting? If so how do I get into the router to change the firewalls?  What can I do to make it so that I can host games again without having to disconnect the wireless when I play?

There is no such firewall on the router that we can disable it .... however you can do one thing ... access router setup page ...change the MTU size under setup from 1500 to 1365 & click save settings .... Go to security tab ...uncheck block WAN request ... click save settings .... Also if possible forward the ports under Application & Gaming Tab .... Let me know if it works ...

  • How to install hga7t antenna on wrt54gs?

    Hi folks,
I have a wrt54gs linksys router, I am unhappy with the signal range of the wireless, so purchased the high gain hga7t antenna kit. Online specifications told that they are compatible, so I orderd it. But recievibg it and trying to install it, I figued out connectors are not compatible. My original antenna on the router is directlly pluged into chassi without any connector and the wires directlly goes into the antenna. But new antenna has a  R-TNC connector, which is obviouslly incompatible with the router! I am really confused, this is in sharp contrast to the specifications! Do I need to purchase special adaptor?
    Thanks

You dont need to purchase a special adaptor this router. Tthe HGA7T is compatible with WRT54GS Router.Unhook the current antenna from your Router and then connect the hga7t antenna to your router. WRT54GS Router has an R-TNC Connector.

  • Help! My WAN IP is dynamic but never changes? [Linksys WRT54G]

So yeah, I got a Webstar modem and a Linksys WRT54G router.
When I connect the modem's wire to the PC instead of connecting it to the router and then from the router to the PC, my WAN IP always changes. On the contrary, when my PC is connected to the router, my IP NEVER change .
I tried doing DHCP Release / Renew and even left both the router and the modem powered off for a whole night and still, same IP!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but this gets more confusing.
So far I thought the IP address of the PC changes if you switch from the PC to the router and back to the PC.
Now you write they reserve it with the MAC address. In that case the PC should also always get the same IP address from your ISP. Unless you modify the MAC address of the PC of course.
So please explain: when does the IP address of which device change?
Based on your last post the IP of either device should never change unless you change the MAC address of the device, i.e. the router should always get the same IP address and the PC should always get the same IP address.
And what is the problem with the static IP addres anyway?

  • LOW Gain Antenna for WRT54G

Does anyone know if they make a low gain antenna for a WRT54G wireless router?
I have used the wireless router for over a year with any problems.  Suddenly the wireless quit.  Bought a new WRT54G but had the same problem.  Hardwired connection works fine.  Discovered that a nieghbor got a wireless system.  Tried all 11 channels but wireless still quits working when it sees the other network.  Tried 3 different laptops so I know its not the PC card.  Want to try a lower gain antenna so my router doesn't see the neighbors.

What is the version of your WRT54G?    It is unlikely that a weaker signal from your router will help your problem.
A more likely explanation for your problem is that the wireless adapter in your computer is getting "drowned" by your neighbor's signal.  A high gain antenna on your router would help your router to overcome the effects from your neighbors.
There are several other things you can do to try to improve your wireless connection:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Changing channel on wrt54gs

I am hooking up a Nintendo Wii to my Linksys router and it does the connection test just fine, but I have alot of problems after that, many error codes. The nintendo site says to change the routers channel to 1 or 11. How do I do this, and will it effect my PS3 that is working just fine as it is? Any help would be great!

You might need to forward ports for Wii. So that it can properly connect

  • Do you think its time to change my router WRT54G v.4 ?

Im using wireless connection most of time as I have two computers, mac and pc. I have been using this method, resetting the router in order to use the internet. Im really tired of doing it every time i switched it on. Any suggestions? I tried most of the through the guide me by still it doesnt work.

Since you router is quit an old router, have you tried to upgrade the firmware of your Router?
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in search tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop..
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Changing antenna power on lightweight 521

I have a 526 controller managing 3 lightweight 521 APs.  I would like to config the APs for maximum distance even if it brings down the data performace a bit since these APs are 99% used for voice.  I can't find where to do this on the 526 managment screens.  Also, I can't seem to manage the APs by pointing a web browser to their IP.  Is this normal when they are LWAPP?
    Thanks,
    Diego

During the site survey, we used the 1230 and assigned tx power based on 100mw, 50, 30, 10, 5.. so on.. on the AP. But when we implemented the controller-based, the transmit power were replaced with 'power levels', 1,2,3,4... so on... I read somewhere that 1 is the max and as the level increases, it is 50% less. say, 1=100mw, 2=50 mw, 3=25mw, 4=12.5, 5=6.25 and so on...
the confusion is, some AP's were set to 30mw of tx power during the site survey. Which level should be the euqivalent as tx power level on the wlc-based deployment? is it safe to assign the 30mw site survey data to the #3 tx power level on the controller?
And do you have ideas on the effect of using or assigning the country codes of the controller. If US is used, what is the max power level value, 100mw? And if US is used as country code, can we used any AP on any country domain. I checked out the chart, but it's quite confusing. Hope you can, or anyone can, shed light on this.
    Thanks for any ideas.... Argh!

  • How do I configure WRT54G as a wireless access point?

Ater a whole series of problems related to Vista, a WAP54G, Airport xpress, wireless printers, etc. plus at least three hours on the phone with Linksys tech support acessing my computer remotely and still not fixing the problems, I dumped my WRT54GC for a Belkin-N router.  I set it up over the weekend and slowly regained internet access, then the pinter, then the Airports.
I still would like to have an access point because my signal strength even with the new N router is too weak downstairs to allow my PS3 to connect to it.  I cannot figure out how to configure the WAP54G to make it work.  I want to take a shot with the WRT54GC.  From what I've read, I should be able to do it.
I can get into the router (referring to the Linksys) no problem.  I can reconfigure it to an extent, changing the IP address to the recommended 192.168.1.2.  I do this by running an ethernet cable from my PC to the router.  Howver, after changing the IP address in the router I can't get into it any more using the new IP address.  When I attach teh Linksys router to the Belkin I can't get in either.
Both the Linksys and the Belkin use 192.168.1.1 as the default IP address for each device.
I would like to know what settings I need to change i nteh WRT54G to turn it ino an access point -- an extenson of my existing network with teh Belkin router attached to the Comcast modem.  I have looked at various how-to's and they all seem to assume I am connecting the two routers with an ethernet cable.  If it's not clear at this point, I'd like to connect them wirelessly.
    Thanks.

Thanks so much for the reply.
I was working with it all last night and somethign strange happened.  After reading some other info on the internets, I changed the IP address on the WRT to 192.168.2.1.  It updated, I then ran the wire from the Belkin to the WRT, I typed in 192.168.2.1, it took me to the Linksys setup page, but when I clicked "wireless" in the WRT setup, it took me to the Belkin setup page.  How in the world did that happen?
Armed with tis new info, I did a hard reset on the WRT -- assuming it would change the WRT back to 192.168.1.1 -- got into the setup, turned off DHCP, left the IP as .1.1, and then wired it again into the Belkin.  I can now get into the setup of either one.
Here's the thing:  I don't want the two routers wired together.  I want to move the WRT downstairs so a PS3 can pick up the signal.  I want the WRT to wirelessly relay that signal to the Belkin to get the PS3 onto the net.  I can't run a wire from the Belkin to the WRT.
I've read conflicting reports about whether the  WRT can do this.  Other sites suggest adding 3rd party firmware to add that functionality but that will definitely push the bounds of my abilities and likely exceed them.  So, can the WRT even function in this way?
Inre the WAP, I don' know why but my ability to access the setup menu via 192.168.1.245 is very hit or miss -- much miss than hit.  It makes no sense unless there is a bad connection somewhere because I hard reset, wire it to my laptop, put in the IP, and time out 19 times out of 20.  I've got the MAC address for the router, and I think I know I want it to function as a repeater, but I've not been able to get that working right eihter.
    Thanks for any further reply.

  • Trying to set up WRT54G as access point

I also put this on the Access Point Forum
    Situation:
    Using a cable modem.
Installed a WIRED SMC barricade router next to the cable modem (just plug & play).
Have 1 PC connected directly to port 2 of the SMC (PC works fine).
Ran a cable from port 1 of the SMC to downstairs.
    Connected cable to the WRT54G.
Via wireless, went into the WRT54G and disable DHCP (and saved settings).
At this point I have can access the internet.
But if I reboot my pc, I can see the WRT54G but do not get internet access nor even access it using 192.168.1.1 (I have to reset the WRT54G and then I can access it).
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
BTW, the SMC IP address is 192.168.2.1, so the only setting I change in the WRT54G was disabling the DHCP.
    Thanks
    Keith

OK, if the SMC's IP is 192.168.2.1, then you would assume your IP would also be on that network. Are you performing a hard reset of the WRT (to factory settings)? If so that would probably explain why you can access 192.168.1.1, because factory rest is to enable DHCP on the 192.168.1.0 network, and your PC may be getting an IP from there before the SMC.
Are the ports on the SMC router just switch ports (same as the ethernet ports on the WRT? If so, which port on the WRT are you connecting to the SMC? If you use one of the ethernet (not the WAN) ports on the WRT, and set it's IP in the 192.168.2.0 network you should be good. Disable DHCP on the WRT, and put it in Router mode, rather than Gateway mode (it doesn't really matter if you are not using the WAN port, as allyou are using are the ethernet ports and the wireless.)
Your DHCP requests will still get passed over to the SMC.

  • Updates for a wrt54g

i have a wrt54g v.1 i was wandering if i can get the firm ware to upgrade the firmware to version 8. is there anyway possible to do this. please let me know thank you

You can change the version of your firmware, but you cannot change the version of your router, except by buying a new one.
Your router's version is based on the parts that were used to build it.  (Different versions of the WRT54G have different parts in them.)   So the version of your router cannot be changed.  Your WRT54G will always be version 1.
You should only load the firmware that is posted for your version of the router.  Do not try to load firmware for a different version of the WRT54G, as this will likely kill your router.  The latest version of firmware for your router is 4.21.1

  • Antennas gain and RSSI

    Hi,
we are using 1240 AP  and now have  changed antenna to 1728 (Gain 5.2dBi) to increase signal strength, but as show Wi-Fi scanner (inSSIDer)
RSSI stays the similar with old and new antennas.
What's wrong? in AP configuration I changed diversity and external antennas gain.
    Valentina

Hi, I have captured with inSSIDer and Xirrus: both programs show  similar results (pictures are attached). Signal strength was measured from one place and it should be higher with higher gain antenna (distance is about 1 m in these pictures, but similar results with longer distance). Should we some addtional configurations in AP - and where if yes?
(the highest blue line in both pictures with dipole and then 1728)

  • External Antenna Configuration IOS 12.3

What is the effect if an external antenna is connected, but the radio configuration has the "External Antenna Configuration" disabled?
Is the radio functioning on the internal antenna only, or is the external antenna functioning without a set gain?

It seems like a bug CSCsl17857 C1231 running 12.3(8)JEC unable to set transmit/receive antenna options. C1231 running the IOS image 12.3(8)JEC will not display the options to change antenna to diversity, right or left. The command under dot11radio0 becomes unavailable. On the GUI of the AP only display the options for antenna transmit/receive but on change and apply, you will get the error "page cannot be display".

  • Multipath Interference

I've got an interesting one here...
I?ve got a customer whom I suspect is experiencing severe multipath interference and/or some type of EMI interference from large machinery. They are a metal machine shop with large drills, saws, and planers with overhead cranes moving back and forth to transport the metal from one location in the plant to the other. Oh and did I mention the walls were all sheet metal too? No plasma cutters or microwave type heating machines luckily...
They are running 1242 IOS access points using 12.3.8 code, using primarily the AIR-ANT3213 pillar mount antennas. They do have one area with two 1728 antennas mounted correctly. The clients are desktop PC?s using a mix of Linksys WRT54G card/antennas (not diversity) and Cisco PI21ABG cards/antennas. A passive survey was done previously to determine coverage and placement and coverage seems to be fine. In the logs I see a lot of clients dis-associating due to Max Retries Limits reached. The radio stats indicate very high numbers of CRC errors and high retries (hundreds every 5 minutes). Voice is not in use here. Ping tests show a lost packet every 20 or so tries. They are running an ERP application where if it loses enough data over time it shuts down. Email, web and simple file sharing seem to be fine.
I?ve run Air Magnet Laptop Analyzer and found higher signal to noise ratios than I would like (-50 to -60). The only thing it seems to notice is the high CRC errors and retries. The signal levels are constantly bouncing from -50?s to -60?s and are never steady. The signal distribution levels are bouncing all over as well, which from a quick look at Air Magnet?s knowledge base indicated possible RF or multipath interference. There is a high level of management traffic at the 1mbps data rate, but I suspect that is from either the script they are running to constantly ping the ERP server, or the frequent re-associations. I do not see any co-channel interference.
So far to combat this I?ve had the customer move the pillar mount antennas off of the metal I-Beams which Cisco recommends. I?ve experimented with power settings and found that I could turn it WAY down (was at 25mW) to 1mW which actually still provides plenty of coverage shockingly. Turned on Long Preamble and increased the Max Retries thresholds. Once I did this, there was some decrease in the CRC errors and retries, but I?m still not comfortable with it.
Does anyone else have any ideas to combat this? I?m considering trying a lower gain antenna, but reaching the antennas is a bit difficult without a lift. I?m even considering trying the 5ghz band as I believe it is a little less susceptible to interference. Not sure if the customer is willing to swallow that pill though.
    Thanks in advance?

    Thanks for the responses everyone.
    Here's what went down...
The customer wasn't interested in changing antennas. What I did was turn the power as far down as I could (1mW). Lucklilly the survey was excellent and coverage was not an issue after turning the power down that low. Then I also limited the client power to 2mW as much as I could. They had a mix of Cisco and Linksys client adapters so I'm not sure how many were actually limited.
I also changed the fragmentation threshold down to 1024 and the RTS down to 1024. This was a recommendation from the folks over at the CWNP boards. I could have gone lower I suppose, but I didn't want to push my luck there. I also maxed the Max Retries & RTS Retries thresholds for good measure.
After all of this, we monitored the situation for about a day. I ran random continuous pings from random machines for well over an hour and not a single ping dropped. CRC errors were still high, but retries were down. I'm guessing the CRC's are just something we're going to have to live with in this high multipath environment.
All in all, the wireless network was much more stable after these changes.
    Again, thanks for the replies.

  • Bad performance on global race-nokia 5800

Ive updated my flashlite, and all, but the performance of global race game on my nokia 5800 (just bought a few days ago) is quite bad(framerate wise) compared to my cousins' 5800. what could be the problem?

When I read battery estimates I always deduct 50% of it, that is usually a more realistic figure...the battery times are laboratory test results and usually don´t have a lot in common with "the real world"...
This isn´t just with Nokia phones btw...
About your test: I think your battery is fine, one the reasons why you couldn´t achieve the 35 hours is that you had the phone turned on...and if the phone was moving (it was constantly changing antenna signals) then the result gets worse as well...
    That´s all I can contribute since I don´t have a 5800.
By clicking the "Kudos!" or the "Solution?" button on the right you can say "Thank You" and you´ll show the author and others that the post is useful.
