Changing primary DNS server in Unity 10.5

We have a Unity server that has a DNS setting that is no longer valid. I was wondering if it would change the license MAC and invalidate the licenses if I were to change that primary and secondary DNS setting.
Thanks,
Jordan

I believe you only need to delete and add again in PLM if you do that, and you're using co-res PLM where you're changing that

  • Change of DNS server setting caused Exchange outages!

I am trying to google/bing my way through this, but here are the main points:
All remote Exchange servers had a) static IP addresses and b) were instructed to use DNS servers in Edmonton and Calgary
If WAN links dropped, they lost DNS
SOLUTION! Point remote servers to the domain controller in that location as the primary DNS server. WAN outage means Exchange still resolves names locally.
Well the day came and we add the local DNS server for each remote site as the primary DNS server at the top of "DNS server addresses, in order of use" portion of advanced TCP/IP settings dialogue box.
    A reboot is performed
Voila! Exchange shits the bed! Hub transport servers in Edmonton and Calgary cannot resolve remote server names; as in no host(a) record exists for them anymore. And we have a 91 minute outage until the DNS is sorted out (ipconfig /registerdns run on each
    server).
Has anyone encountered this or have some deep knowledge of DNS (relative to my own) that could at least throw out a theory as to why this might happen?

Hi, please issue Get-ExchangeServer -Identity "ServerName" -status | fl and check:
    CurrentDomainControllers
    CurrentGlobalCatalogs
    CurrentConfigDomainController
The server must been linked to the wrong server. You can change that in powershell too.

  • Can´t communicate with the primary DNS Server 200.49.156.5: and now?

    Hi,
I have connected a Sony Vaio with a Linksys WRT54G router, using broadband cable provided by a Motorola Surfboard Modem (model 5b5100i)
I followed all the steps from the router´s CD.
Finally I connected a network cable to the port 1 of the router and on the other extreme the Motorola Modem is now connected. As result, since I  have a desktop already connected to the modem, there are now 2 connections on the back of the motorola modem, 1 for a desktop that uses its USB plug and a 2nd, which uses a network cable (ethernet connection) and that plugs at the end to the Linksys router. connection is ok based on the Linksys CD.
The wireless card of 2 different laptops recognize the router´s signal, but no internet copnnection is available.
after diagnostic on network problems by Vista Windows, I receive the following message
¨"Cannot communicate with the primary DNS Server 200.49.156.5"
What does it mean? what needs to be set in order to make it work?
Thanks in advance for any help

I talked to a tech support form my cable company and the motorola only provides 1 IP address, therefore, in order to make a router work (it will need its own IP address, a 2nd one), you need to buy an ADDITIONAL internet connection or access point....this company is in Argentina. While I lived in the US (last month) they allowed me to have multiple computers from the same one connection.
bottom line, calll your ISP and tell them you need either to install the router on your connection OR to have an additional internet cable input....
    just my 2 cents...business rules.

    Hello,

What's different about 10.4.9 in this
    case?
10.4.9 update "Addresses slow performance of non-cached DNS queries and provides an update to BIND version 9.3.2."
You may still prefer to add forwarders but, taking above on face value, no longer necesary for those who do not want to manually edit files.
Mind you, I have not actually tested the default DNS in 10.4.9 so cannot confirm that the previous problems do not still occur (but just to a lesser extent .

  • GSS as primary DNS Server for Intranet

    Hi,
Can the GSS be used as a as primary DNS server for Intranet? An additional DNS server can be configured to answer the unknown Records like MX by GSS.
if it can be configured, I would be thankful if anyone shares with me the brief configuration steps Apart from configuring Answers, answer groups, domain lists, source address lists, DNS rules.
    with thanks
    sathappan

Yeah I'd certainly recommend against it! So essentially the client machines are unable to update or query dynamic AD related DNS records since they're not pointing to the DNS servers actually used by your AD server(s). I could well imagine that causing
issues, and meaning that some AD functionality won't work correctly.
I know you can directly integrate BIND with AD, eg so that the BIND servers are the ones used by AD, though I haven't tried it, but this seems to be neither.
I can't find any articles relating to your exact situation, presumably no one else has tried to use such a mixed and disjoined setup. I'd focus on looking for articles relating to why you shouldn't point your users at a router (most commonly in small setups
on ADSL) for the DNS rather than directing them to the server for DNS and then having that query the router for external results. It's a more common scenario and you're more likely to find articles relating to it.
One article you might find useful is
http://msmvps.com/blogs/acefekay/archive/2009/08/17/ad-and-its-reliance-on-dns.aspx which talks in terms of using your ISP's DNS servers on the client machines, but in your situation it sounds like the BIND servers are essentially providing an equivalent
    setup.
There's also various discussions and comments on the topic elsewhere on these forums, for instance

  • Pragmatically change the DNS server

I have been trying to figure out how to write a program to change the DNS server, like you can in the control panel. I have played with Resolv.conf and a whole bunch of low level APIs.
From the terminal window, things like nslookup work (use the right dns server) but Safari doesn't. It still is using the original DNS server. I can stop and start safari and go to web pages it has not visited before and it still uses the old DNS server, so its not just pulling up cached pages.
It seems the low-level API stuff doesn't work for higher level applications like Safari (its the only high level app I know of that uses DNS to test with).
What is the API to use to change the DNS server address such that everyone,, like safari, will use the new DNS address?

Yeah, but I am changing all the DHCP entries in the system and it still gets out. However, it is solved by updating the system config. I was just curious as to where it got its DHCP server info from when the system config was blank and resolv.conf was set to my DHCP server.

  • How do i change primary smtp server?

How do I change my primary smtp server? I can delete all the old accounts I no longer use as email accounts, but the primary smtp server for the accounts I still use is still set as that for the old server. Not only is there nowhere to delete it, I can't even change it! There should at least be a button to take you to that page in the iOS6 settings somewhere easy to find, like IN the same place as where it is listed.
    Very annoying.

What did not work? You could not add an additional SMTP server? It does not matter what the primary is listed as....turn it off. Then turn on the additional server you added.
Better yet remove your .mac account and add it back as .me account.

  • Remote login: cannot connect to primary DNS server

To what should I set the DNS under 'Computers and Services'? I cannot get any computers (Mac or Win) to remotely connect to the network, it says cannot connect to primary DNS. The goal is to have users have access to home directories from remote locations but I cannot seem to get a connection. Help please...
    Message was edited by: mrsmittys

    Hi
A bit vague on details and I have to question why you would want to do this anyway? For example 10-20 users all accessing home directories remotely would be hard work if not practically impossible. What is the bandwidth on the host’s broadband service?
That said there are a number of ways of doing this the easiest being a VPN. Ideally a fixed public IP address at the site that the server is at and a router capable of supporting VPN connections. I’ve always found ZyXel Prestige 662 Routers and IPSecuritas (which is available free as a download – just remember to donate) a good combination. Once the tunnel has been built the remote client will be able to access any resource at the host site as if it was in the same building.
Again I would steer you away from this as the connection may prove to be unreliable depending on users and usage. A more workable solution would be Portable Home Directories. With PHD you can work with Home Folders without being connected to the host network. The Home folders would synchronize the next time the client connected to the network.
Are your home folders Open Directory networked home folders or just folders created that are defined as a paticular user’s folder? If its an Open Directory Networked Home folder then internal DNS Services configured and running somewhere would be absolutely crucial as Open Directory will not function without it.
I have to be honest and say I dont think you have really thought this through (no offense intended), however keep posting. No doubt others will offer views and opinions that may further assist you.

  • Changing Partern Exchange Server for Unity

Wondering if anyone has had experience with this:
We need to shut down our old 2003 Exchange box and use our Exchange 2007 box exclusively. The issue is our Unity 7 box is using our 2003 Exchange as it's partner server and need to change it to our 2007 box instead.
I've read some documentation on it, but can't find anything specific to our versions listed previously and just wondering if there are any gotchas involved or if this is fairly straight forward.
Any steps you've followed to be successful would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Unity 7.x documentation is the same as Unity 5.x - there is no specific 7.x documentation.  The 2 versions are so close that they are interchangeable from a setup/reconfiguration perspective.  Check this link here for info:

  • Changing default DNS Server

    Hi,
I'm a new BT broadband customer.
Like most, I have a house full of pcs and gadgets connecting to the Internet.  Many belong to my children.  Naturally, as a responsible parent, I want to do my utmost to limit their access to inappropriate content.
The basic first line of defence is obviously to have dns filtering.
However, my Home Hub 3 won't let me change the default dns gateway to some filtering service like OpenDNS, nor is there anything to suggest that BTs own dns service has this capability.
Can you please, as a matter of the greatest urgency (I believe that my children are currently able to access the most inappropriate content on their mobile devices), tell me how to get this in place.
    Thanks

Many thanks for the replies on this thread - they are much appreciated, especially the email address.
As I said, I would regard dns filtering as the first line of defence.  And a very necessary one, as my main concern is with my kids wifi connecting mobile devices.
What interests me about all this is that, as people have pointed out, there are ways to set the dns gateway per device.  To my mind that completely undermines any argument for not allowing it to be changed on the HH.
Why might BT want to disable dns setting in the Home Hub?
    i) Because they can then offer valuable dns based services, such as 404 redirection?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
ii) Because it is one less thing that could be miss-set, so cutting down support calls?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
iii) Because Government might ask us to ban access to certain sites and controlling the dns lookup would help us do this?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
Am I missing something here?  Is there actually a really good reason - because I would shut up if there was one!
Meanwhile, my kids remain unprotected for a 3rd day

  • How to change primary ADFS server (3.0) on a hybrid deployment of Office365?

    Hi,
We have a hybrid deployment of Office 365 and on-premises services. I need to change my primary standalone ADFS 2.0 for a new deployment of ADFS Farm 3.0 with ADFS Proxy.
Do you have a step by step with the WAAD commands to achieve this task?
How much time does it take to apply the changes?
    Thank you very much.

Once you deploy the new farm, make sure it works as expected (check
    https://sts.domain.com/adfs/ls/idpinitiatedsignon.aspx). When ready,
change your firewall/LB to point to the new farm. If you have imported also the token signing/decrypting certificates, you should be all set. If you have generated new self-signed ones, you will have to run Update-MsolFederatedDomain cmdlet from
    the new farm.
Or do you mean step-by-step instructions for the actual ADFS install?

  • DNS Server change

Forgive me if this has been asked before, I've been searching for an answer and can't seem to find one.
i am using the previous version of iweb and i have just published my site.
I am trying to figure out how to use my registered domain name.
I know i need to change my DNS server but don't know how to find out what the .mac one is..
and if iweb 06 can even do this.
also, when i published my site to my .mac account the first page comes up but none of the other pages that i linked from the main page.
any thoughts or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    aavalenti

    Hi aavalenti,
For the Domain I'd like you to have a look at the following page
    http://alyeska.altervista.org/en/iWeb_Domains.html
However .mac doesn't provide DNS servers.
For the question about the page and not working links you need to reupload the site from iWeb by making a publish all. Seems like some pages aren't on the server.

  • Changing DNS Server on Lion OD/Kerberos Master

I have an interesting task ahead of me, but am unsure how best to proceed.
I spent days setting-up my new Lion Server and attached Pegasus RAID array.  There are 140 users, 8 share points, and hundreds of different ACL permutations within the AFP shares that reside on a thunderbolt-attached Pegasus array.  The only services running on the box are DNS, AFP, and OD.
I added a secondary server and intended to use it as an OD replica (redundancy is great, but the speed increase would also be great).  Problem is that I set them both with .local names.  I can't get an OP replica to run unless they are within the same DNS zone, and so that is what I am looking to do.
I have read a lot of Apple support documents and a couple books, and understand that changing the DNS server will likely break OD (certainly Kerberos).
My goal is to re-zone the DNS while preserving OD users, groups, passwords, and most importantly: how they relate to the ACLs on the Pegasus unit (I would very much like to avoid having to re-do all those permissions - particularly within the Lion Server UI).
If I need to do a re-install and then laterally migrate, I certainly can.  I am hoping for the path of least headache to be sure.
If anyone has advise on how to do this as painlessly as possible, I would appreciate it.

Will the OD archive contain the old DNS settings and somehow muck this up?
I don't know the answer to all of your questions but I do know this: If you have an OD archive from a master that had an incorrect hostname, this information was put into your archive.
"Open Directory" is comprised of three components: PasswordServer, LDAPv3 and Kerberos. This is what is backed up during an OD Archive. So if you have a archive from a machine with messed up DNS, I would not trust that everything will be fine after the restore.
Maybe somebody else can chime in and offer you further help...
