Changing size of image in ACR mode

Have just bought Elements 12. When editing image in raw mode I cannot change size of image using ALT in combination with the mouse scroll  button like I could in Elements 8. Clicking plus and minus signs is clumsy and slower

I believe that was removed in acr starting with the late 6.x or 7.x series and not sure why.
One way to zoom quicker with the zoom in (plus) is to drag a box on the image, although that doesn't work for zooming out (minus).
You can also right click on the image to get a menu with different zoom values (viewing percents).

  • Changing size of image in Aperture

I just purchased a Nikon D2hs which has only a 4mp sensor. The image is pretty small relatively. I want to print at 13x19" on my Epson 2200 printer. In PS which is what I am used to, I upsized the image to 13x19" and resolution to 300 dpi and then after everything else, I would apply sharpening on a layer to preserve the original. In Aperture, it seems there is now way to raise the resolution and image size before applying sharpening. I think what happens is that you apply sharpening to the original 4mp image and request Aperture to print at the desired size. Aperture then upsizes the image at a dpi it determines is adequate and sends that to the printer with the sharpening applied before upsizing. Also does Aperture use the same bicubic sharper method of upsizing images that PS uses?
Is this correct. If I understand, in version 1.1, will we be able to use the workflow normally used in PS as I described above.
Also, speaking of sharpening, if anyone knows, will aperture version 1.1 have sharpening tools similar to smart sharpen or the PS version of USM?
I have not seen a specific description of what specifically is changed in Aperture 1.1. Is there a website that shows the tools added and changed and how they changed or for the new ones what they will look like and how they work?
A lost of questions I know. I am anxious to actually see 1.1 in operation as I know many of you are. Thanks for any help here.

It's hard to say what method of upsizing Aperture uses. If you wanted to stay with that workflow, you'd probably be better off editing your image externall (in Photoshop), then resampling and applying the sharpening you need. When you save at the larger size Aperture will pick up that change.
Also, speaking of sharpening, if anyone knows, will

I am pretty sure not, though no-one has really done a good look at exactly how Aperture fares in comparison to other sharpening methods.

There are two places I know of.
    Aperture's official 1.1 page:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/update.html
and my own Inside Aperture page with a little more detail on minor things they do not talk about on the update page:
    http://insideaperture.com/Site/Aperture%20PMA%20New%201.1%20Features.html
Basically I would categorize the 1.1 update as primarily addressing RAW conversion quality and flexibility. The only new adjustment tool would seem to be the RAW Fine Tune Tool, I do not think any of the other adjustment tools have been modified.
The other big things addressed are DPI settings around export (so you could properly resize) and also the color meter (not exactly a tool). My own favorite thing fixed is actually the loupe, which displays real pixels at any level of magnification.
There are probably a lot of other little bug fixes included, and possible some feature tweaks as well. But I don't think you'll see anything major that's not on the list for this update.

If you change the image mode of this image from 8-bit RGB image to Grayscale

If you mean by Pixel count the number of pixels, this will not change. The image will have the same size thus the same number of pixels.

  • Changing the size of images displayed when a thumbnail is clicked

In an Aperture gallery, how do I change the size an image is displayed when a thumbnail is clicked. There are sliders for changing the size of the thumbnail; I can't find an adjustment anywhere for the size an image is displayed when the curved arrow in the upper left hand corner is clicked.
    Help!
    --Kenoli

    Hi Kenoli,
In an Aperture gallery, how do I change the size an image is displayed when a thumbnail is clicked.
Do you mean "double-clicked"? In "Browser" mode, when I click on a photo, nothing changes. However, when I double-click on a photo, it switches to "Viewer" mode.
However, I'm missing the curved arrow that you mention. I can't find any photos with a curved arrow over them in any mode. In fact, the only overlays are the badges in the lower right.
Can you be a little more specific about exactly what mode you are in?

  • How do I change the JPEG image size in PSE-12 when opening from RAW

Switching from PSE-9 to PSE-12. When a JPEG image is opened RAW in PSE-12 the size is 18.72" Wide x 12.48" high 300 DPI. The same image in PSE-9 is 23.4" wide x 15.6" High 240 DPI. How do I get PSE-12 to open the image as in PSE-9?

Uncheck the boxes at the bottom of the dialog Scale styles and resample Image so that only constrain proportions is checked. If you the change the resolution box from 240 to 300 you will get back to your original dimensions.
This is a meaningless thing to do, you still have the exact same number of pixels, you have only changed the metadata number in the file for ppi, and your prints are not affected by this number.
You could also use the same method to change the dimensions to 6 x 4 or 9 x 6 etc.
There are some cases (actually most cases) where you need to CROP the photo to change the dimensions, when the aspect ratio of the original photos is different than the aspect ratio of the final photo; the specific case in 99jon's example is the only case you ever want to change dimensions using Image->Resize->Image Size, where the aspect ratio doesn't change from 6x4 to 9x6 (or 12x8 or 18x12 or ...), and even then, you could do the same thing simply by telling the printer the size you want, you don't really need to do anything in PSE.

  • Changing resolution and image size doesn't change result on screen?

I'm using Photoshop CS3. I am trying to change the resolution of several images that will be printed in a newspaper. So the current images are 72 ppi and really huge -- for example 36 x 27 inches (document size), and when I change them to 300 ppi, the image sizes shrink to about 8 x 6 inches, as I expect. But the image I see on the screen doesn't change. So, for example, when I open up the image originally, it's at 33% and the entire image is visible. After I change the resolution, and the image size has changed accordingly, the image still appears the same and it remains at 33%. Shouldn't the image shrink on the screen since its size has shrunk? Or if it remains the same on the screen, shouldn't the percentage shift? I mean if the document size is now 8 x 6, it should be able to be displayed at 100% and not fill my whole screen... I'm so confused. Thanks...

    gradded,
The "Document Size" area of the Image Size dialog is just to indicate the size (in inches) that your document will be printed. The ppi adjustment has nothing to do with what is displayed on your monitor. Your monitor doesn't care anything about ppi. The monitor contains a certain number of pixels and after you change that ppi setting, the monitor will still have that same number of pixels.
As long as you leave the "Resample Image" box unchecked, your image size (Pixel Dimensions) will not change. You will see no change on your monitor. If you check the "Resample Image" box, then your image size (in pixels) will change.
    Hope this helps.

  • Swapping images - need to change size

I am trying to create a disjointed rollover so that when I
click on a picture thumbnail in one frame, the full-size image
changes on another frame (it is for a photo website - there are
about 20 thunbnails on a page and a space for only one full-size
    image).
It works perfectly fine with "Swap Images" behavior as long
as all full-size images are of the same size - you just set one of
the full-size images as an original as then swap images as you
click on different thumbnails. The problem I am struggling with is
that my full-size images are of different size - "Swap Images"
functions distorts them since it resizes all full-time images to
the same size. What is a solution?

You can do this many ways ways -
    1. Don't use swap image - use Show/Hide layer instead. Have
    the alternate
image in a hidden layer that is shown when the trigger is
    'tickled'. Using
this method you can have images that are any dimension.
    2. Use swap image, but remove the dimensions from the
    original image's tag,
    i.e., change this -
    <img name="original" width="150" height="220" ...
    to this -
    <img name="original" ...
Now when you swap in your offsize image, there is no
    predefined size to
change it to. Be aware that this method may well result in an
    unpleasant
and undesirable 'rearrangement' of your page layout as it
    adjusts to your
    new image's dimensions.
    3. Pad the smaller image with canvas background color on all
    sides so that
all the images *are the same size*.
    4. Use a SetTextofLayer (SetText of Element in CS3) behavior
    to change the
image reference in a layer (or non-positioned container)
    placed so that it
will show the desired larger image in the proper place.
    5. Use the PVII ShowPic extension -

  • Save Image in ACR 5.6 vs. Open/Save from Photoshop CS4

Apologies in advance if this turns out to be cockpit error. Recently started shooting again, after a long hiatus, and boy there have been some changes over the past few years. I feel like Rip Van Winkle.
Was used to early versions of ACR with CS2 and thought I was doing just fine finding my way around a new PC using ACR 5.6 RC with Photoshop CS4, when I processed my first shoot using the two. Followed my old/usual raw workflow with Photomechanic selects -> Bridge -> batch processing with Photoshop, when I noticed the JPEGs PS was saving from my PS Action didn't reflect adjustments I had set in ACR/Bridge.
The Action was pretty simple, just did an open, a few simple adjustments, profile/mode conversion, and a save as JPEG. I tried running the Action two different ways, once from Bridge and once directly in PS, and got the same result.
Scratching my head (this stuff used to work fine), I opened all the images into ACR from Bridge, clicked Select All, then clicked Save Images, and saved them as JPEGs into a folder. This worked, where each JPEG written reflected the crop, WB, exposure/brightness, contrast/black settings I had made through ACR/Bridge.
Any idea what I've overlooked? I tried this using both 32-bit and 64-bit PS. The PC is running Win7 RTM x64. The camera body is a Canon 7D, which is why I installed ACR 5.6 RC. I'm otherwise really tickled with everything. Nice to see the progress made by everyone in the industry while I was away. Thanks in advance...

If you are running an action during a Batch operation you need to be sure that either you DON'T record ad Open step and select Suppress File Open and Color Profile Warnings in which case the Camera Raw settings in play for a given image will be processed in or make sure you _DO_ record an open step making sure you select the correct workflow settings (color space, resolution, etc) but without making ANY adjustments while recording the open step and make sure you've selected the Override Action Open Command...
It's confusing until you understand what it is your are or not recording...
When you record a an open step while selecting the Workflow settings and NOT making any image adjustments all you are recording is the workflow settings. Then in Batch you tell the Batch to ignore the Open command and only use the Workflow settings...
Otherwise you don't actually need to record an explicit open step...you won't have any absolute control over what Workflow setting are in play-but since the Workflow settings are sticky you can open an image to double check the settings and click Done and then you've set the Workflow settings manually (not in an action).
The other oddity when recording an open action step in Photoshop is that the actual command to open must come from Photoshop...this may seem simple but it's not. I keep a spare raw file on the desktop so when recording an Open action I can start in Photoshop and turn on recording then drag & drop the raw file onto my Photoshop Icon to make sure Photoshop is opening the image then click to set the Workflow settings and specifically do NOT make any other image adjustment steps (they would also be recorded) and continue with the Open, then whatever other steps you need to add before recording the Save and Close steps (yeah, same tricky deal on the end with the Save As recorded and the Override Action Save As Commands...
If all of the above makes your eye's glaze over (the best time to learn how to do this stuff is NOT when you are under the gun or a deadline) I suggest you try using Image Processor...easier to set up and learn, not nearly as powerful as a Batch Action though...

    Thanks.

    >Editing images in the Develop mode is very slow; is it possible to default open images in ACR via Preferences(as in Bridge when double clicking on the thumbnail)?
I can not help you with the slow editing in Develop mode; I am on Windows so maybe some Mac user can help you.
You will not be able to open an image in an external application by double-clicking because that will always get you to Lightroom's Develop module.
    >In the "Edit In" dialog, "Open in Other Application" is grayed out.
You should set your external editors in Preferences, External Editing Tab. The first of those will be set to CS3 or CS4 if you have either installed.
You can choose the second external editor. In my case I use Nikon's Capture NX as my second External Editor.
But I have temporarily changed it to Bridge, purely for researching my answer to your question. This will open Bridge, and you can then select "Open in Camera Raw"; however this is such a long way around that it is hardly worth doing. And it also suffers from the problem that if you do not close Bridge, another copy of Bridge will open the next time choose to edit in Bridge from Lightroom.
I do not think that you can choose "Camera Raw" as an external editor because it is only a plug-in for Photoshop and Lightroom; and the version that Lightroom uses is basically the same as used by Photoshop.
I wonder why your Lightroom editing is slow? It may be worth looking at that problem first.
Hope these give you some pointers towards a solution.

When I change size of icons, or icon vs list display, why does it affect the whole computer? In some folders I want to see a list and others I want to see an icon and I don't need a large icon in all folders. I used to be able to set each folder separately in the old OS. How do I fix this?

I can hilight an item, go to the finder/file/getinfo but there is no box next to icon view.
I can go to view/options and adjust the icon size etc, but this applies to every folder in the whole computer. I need varied options in different folders, i.e., I want to view images as icons and text as text. I have to change it every time I open a folder. I used to be able to set it per folder in the old OS.

  • Images in ACR are softer than when viewed in Photoshop?

    Greetings,
I'm finding that when I view a RAW image in ACR 4.1 that the image does not appear as sharp as when I open the image from ACR into Photoshop and view it in Photoshop. I open my RAW files from ACR into Photoshop as PSD files. The image as viewed in Photoshop looks sharper at values less than 100%. Here's a screen grab of the same image (Photoshop on the left, ACR on the right), side by side at the exact same viewing size (23.1%), and the Photoshop image has more sharpness and clarity to it. It's minor, but noticeable in the leaves and bricks and it gives the ACR image an overall soft feeling.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1jidvrPRXgXSfq8c5IHonNL13oeEI
Do the programs handle interpolation diferrently when viewing images at less than 100%? Or, do RAW and PS files inherently display differently when not viewed at 100%? When both are viewed at 100%, they match. This isn't a major deal breaker -- but the lack of clarity at smaller viewing sizes in ACR is unfortunate, since I rarely view images in ACR at 100% size when I'm reviewing images and images that I think are soft are, in fact, not.
The disparity seems more pronounced with images in portrait orientation.
    I'm using a Mac Pro, Radeon X1900, 23" ACD. Canon 5d images.
Anyone experience similar? I love ACR, but wondering if someone can shed some light on this.

Thanks for the clarification now -- it makes sense. I knew ACR only showed the effects of sharpening at 100%, but had forgotten to take into account Photoshop shows the effects of sharpening at all sizes, including under 100%

  • Applying settings preset to multiple images in ACR v4.3

When attempting to apply a preset to multiple images in ACR, the preset is only applied to the "current" or "active" image. The other images in the thumbnail pane remain unchanged, even though they are selected. This function works correctly in Bridge, but not in ACR. "Synchronizing" the files does not do the same thing, as my preset incorporates "Apply auto tone adjustments." What am I missing?

Pardon my misunderstanding of the question. I just tried it, and the method of selecting the images has no impact (e.g., the "select all" button, or hold "shift" or "ctrl" and click on multiple images...)
All the boxes are checked in the "synchronize" dialog. However, this synchronizes all of the settings to the "active image," which ties the tone adjustments to that image, which is undesirable. I just want to automatically adjust the tones (as part of my preset) to all of the selected images.
Based upon input from this tread, this is the refined procedure I use to "check" if it's working (which hasn't for me so far):
    1) Select multiple images (or all, if you prefer)
    2) Apply "camera raw defaults" Note that the settings default to Blacks: +5, Brightness: +50, Contrast: +25
    3) Apply a saved preset (saved with the check box "Apply auto tone adjustments" checked).
    4) Note that the Blacks, Brightness, and Contrast sliders only "adjust" for the "active" image, but don't change for the other selections. They remain at Blacks: +5, Brightness: +50, Contrast: +25
Again, if I perform this procedure in Bridge, it works for all selected images. However, in ACR, it functions as described above.
    Does that clear it up?
Thanks for the prompt responses so far. I hope I'm simply doing something incorrectly!
