Character styles do not remain after .epub export

Hi all,
When I export a document from InDesign to .epub (following the instructions given by Adobe videos) I discover the final .epub doc do not maintain the character styles.
In the CSS template the styles are present (such as "bold" or "italic"), but the font weight attribute is always "regular". Is this a ID bug, or something can be done in order to fix it?

EXACTLY what version of CS6 are you running? There was a bug in an early version of CS6 that prevented either space before or space after from being recognized (I forget which). It was fixed in a later version.
What does it say in the About InDesign dialog?

Character Styles Panel not refreshing after adding character styles

Hello,
Anyone know how to get Illustrator's Character Styles panel to refresh after programatically adding new styles by calling CreateCharStyle()?
Currently, the user must save the document and reopen it in order for Illustrator to refresh the character style list within the UI. This is obviously not ideal.
You may replicate this issue in the sample code by executing the SnippetRunner Text Styles snippet and then executing the CreateCharacterStyle snippet. This sample code also successfully adds a new character style but fails to update the Character Styles panel within the UI.
One side note: The AIATECurrentTextFeaturesSuite has an Invalidate() method. I tried adding this call but it doesn't seem to have any impact.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm seeing success with the Notification call in CS4 too; thanks. But not in CS5 (Windows). I still need to save the document to refresh the panel. And (in fact, probably due to this fact), while the new Style has appeared, none of the features (such as font size, leading) that I have added using NewCharStyle.SetFeatures(features) show up. Any clues? The code (basically copied from the SnipperRunner project) is identical between CS4 and CS5; I'm just building against the different SDKs.

16 GB x-Fi Style - does not start after charging

Hi,
4 weeks ago I bought my x-Fi style and used it during my holidays for 2 weeks. After charging the player only twice (USB-connection with notebook), it now fails starting. Maybe there is an internal temperature fuse to protect from overheating and I only have to wait to try again? After connecting to USB the CREATIVE sign appears but disappears directly and a battery symbol appears and remains on the screen. After disconnecting the player does not react in any way. I already tried to reset but cannot start it again.
Can anyone help me?

I found the website for Creative to be very frustrating. Not one snail mail address or corporate headquarters info. The link for website feedback didn't work and one other customer service link was a dud. They clearly don't want to be 'bothered' with complaints, or anything positi've for that matter!
But, I searched on the forum and found a three-year-old post about someone who was frustrated with having to carry around a paperclip to always push 'reset' on his X-Fi -- and the light dawned! Didn't know I had one of those. I pressed reset and voila! it is working again. Still had to charge it, but it accepted the charge this time and I was able to finish my book and move on to the next. Now, the next problem is I tried to access my wireless network which has a $ in the password and there is no $ in the choices for entering a password. So, now I have to change the password, change all of my device passwords (Blu-Ray, iPad, laptops(2), friend's laptops, etc. a huge pain. Seems to me they could have included a $ in the choices!

Bold character style does not inherit the paragraph emphasis (Italic)

I am using TCS2 (RH 8, FM 9).
I have a character style in FrameMaker that makes GUI terms bold. My text for Notes, Tips and so in is italic and when I apply my GUI character style in FM, the text becomes both bold and italic. In RoboHelp, my text with the GUI character style is only Bold.
Is there a way to change this in the CSS or elsewhere?

Bug: Temp files with 0-Byte size are not removed after PDF export

When exporting to PDF through the CR-API (CRPE) the temporary files epfHHHH.tmp and ctmHHHH.tmp in the windows temporary path (with HHHH = hexadecimal number with 4 digits) are not deleted when they are 0-Byte in size - even after closing the application which called the CRPE-API. When HHHH reaches its limit (hex FFFF = dec 65535) the Crystal Reports DLLs are not able to create more PDFs - the export aborts with an error and the PDFs are 0-Byte in size.
This behaviour was tested/reproduced with Crystal Reports 8.5, but (as many other long-term bugs) might be also exist in later releases of Crystal Reports as well as on the other SDK interfaces.
KBase Article ID:2009412, Track ID: ADAPT00011016 and Escalation ID: 1472 describes a solution for this problem and Business Objects says that using Crxf_pdf.dll, version 8.6.0.108, dated 04/25/2002 or later solves the problem. We are using a newer one from 2003 (version 8.6.2.429) and still see this problem. It seems that 0-Byte-Files are ommitted from the deletion.
Does anybody know a workaround or solution for this bug?

Files are not deleted after auto export

Hi folks,
I am using Oracle UCM 11gPS6 in Redhat Linux 5 OS.I have set automatic export based on certain docType.While setting this export,I have marked "Delete files after revisions".
But when I automate this process,files are not getting deleted.
Am I missing something or is this feature not available in this product?

Ipad2 app store update notes remain after update complete

After updating apps, the app icon and and related notes which appeared when update is released are not removed from update page after the update has been completed. It remains and the "update" button changes to "open" as expected. But update info will not go away.

That's how it is now. Presumably it's meant to be transparency for those that have auto app updates enabled, to allow them to see what their iPad did 'behind their backs' so to speak. But it means that everyone gets the list, whether they have auto updates on or not.
Those updates will drop off after about 3 weeks or so.

Tabbed and accordion widgets not working after latest export.

The accordion widget was working on the sites I built, but now when I export the sites after changes, the accordion and tabbed panels don't work.

This one didn't work though. I tried removing the clear Lock line, and I don't get any errors. But then it doesn't work properly.

Zoom-in on webpages not remaining after re-start

I have the latest Firefox for Windows on my computer. The default font sizes when opening the browser were too large, so I zoomed in twice (using 'view', then 'zoom-in'). It worked for the session. But once I close and re-open the browser, that change didn't 'stick'. I have to zoom-in every time I re-start Firefox. Tried just about everything that I can think of, but nothing seems to work (even changing the 'tools', 'options', 'fonts and colors'...because that messed up some websites that I use).
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Help with Bold/Italic CSS in EPUB export

I generate EPUB files from the print version of my InDesign books. Because I want the best possible experience for readers on various devices, I always take time to clean up and optimize the XHTML and images, since I do understand that reflowable eBooks may not look exactly like their print-page counterparts. Plus, paring things down to basic HTML tags like div, p, em, and strong helps me prep the content for multiple targets, including Kindle or web page, and also helps ensure accessibility by allowing the user's device to handle em and strong instead of forcing those blocks to be italic or bold.
When InDesign exports text formatted as italic and bold, however, I don't get simple tags like ... and ..., I get ... and ....
It's always worked like that, which is fine—but in previous versions it was no big deal to replace all ... with ... (or ...). Since there was one idGeneratedStyles.css for the whole book, I could rely on the fact that N would always be the same style within a book (even if it varied from one book to another).
Now, with the supposed "more control over CSS," I find that there's a local CSS file generated for every document in the book! In one document, ... is bold, in another the same class means italic. This change has turned a 30 second process into 60 minutes, since I have to check each document one at a time to do the correct replacement.
Is there an option I'm missing? Is this a new feature-bug?
Am I an edge case?

I did try replacing all italic text in the 30 documents or so with a new character style called "Italic;" I set the Export Tagging option for the style to em but the output I got was ...
That's still closer to what I need, since it's consistent, but definitely not what I was hoping for! I'm also not sure I want to remember to use the new "Italic" style instead of the near-instinctive keyboard shortcut for make this selection italic.

Unable to reset some settings values in Character Style Options back to "inherited"

First, unfortunately Paragraph Styles and Character Styles are not so cool as in InDesign in Photoshop. I hope it will be updated in future versions because good typography is very actual now.
Here is one of issues:
I can't set Font Family and Color in Character Style Options back to inherited ones, i.e. to reset/empty it. Onse I set some custom font/color for Character Style (manually or after "Redefine..") I can't remove it, only set new one. And since Character Style is another level of abstraction over Paragraph Style this behavior is very annoying - I always need to check what font is set up for characters, change it or even delete this character style and create a new one with same settings but default (empty) font family.
Fortunately some other settings (font size, leading and all other inputs/selects with editable value) can be reset (emptied) - that's why I consider situation with font family/color as buggy/raw.
What do you think about this? May be I don't know some secret tricks/technics to fix it?

I purchased the same laptop from Wal-mart in late August, I have had nothing but problems. Going from one program to another within the computer takes forever, the pages constantly say "not responding", getting on the internet takes all day, anti virus software has been installed, scans have been run which might I add took three days to do because the computer kept freezing and I had to manually restart. Un-installing programs is next to impossible as every time I start and sit and wait 10 minutes later I am still waiting, try to get out of the program and it won't let me. I try ctrl alt del which doesn't help. I took mine back to Wal-mart a week over the amount of time they allow for returns which is ridiculously short and they would not take it back. I have spent numerous hours trying everything under the sun to get this 2 month old computer to work and to meet up to my expectations of a brand new laptop computer and I am almost ready to chunk it out the backdoor. I am very disappointed in this product and will never buy another Toshiba. My family owns a Dell laptop and 2 HP laptops and we love them. This laptop was purchased for my children to do schoolwork as they are homeschooled and unfortunately they have not been able to do ANY! Take my advice, DO NOT BUY this product!

How to apply a Character Style that's already been made in a template document?

First of all I'd like to thank everyone that helps. I'm a complete beginner at scripting and appreciate all your help.
I'm basically using GREP expressions to find patterns in a document and apply a Character Style which has already been made. This Character style was not made using script, but just in InDesign when making and setting up the template.

This is how I currently have it. I will manually define the changes to the text. The problem is, each template uses a different set of fonts and not all of them use Bold e.g. Sabon can use CE Bold.
I would like to learn how to apply a Character Style and have tried looking around but nothing seems to work.

Character Styles in the Real World

My real-world use of Character styles is a combination usage
of Paragraph and Character styles for Notes: I have a Paragraph
style called Note, which simply adds margins of .15in Left, 10pt
Top, and 8pt Bottom. Within this paragraph style, multiple labels
announce the type of Note with the use of Character styles
NoteLabel (Navy), RecommendLabel (Teal), CAUTIONLabel (Purple), and
WARNINGLabel (Red).
This way, you can change the color of one or more labels
without worrying about the paragraph settings (or vice versa).
Also, when placing a Note inside a table cell (which might
have limited horizontal space, especially with three or four
columns), we still use the "Label" character styles but
without the Notes paragraph style. This still sets off the
text visually, without adding unnecessary extra vertical space.

I can tell you about two sites.
1. A system which allocates and dispatches crews, trucks, backpack hoses, spare socks, etc to bushfires (wildfires to you). It operates between two Government departments here in Australia. Each of those despatchable items is a remote object and there have been up to 50,000 active in the system at a time during the hot summer months. This is a large and life-critical system.
2. A monitoring system for cable TV channels. A piece of hardware produces a data stream representing things like channel utilization, error rates, delay, etc and this is multiplexed via RMI to a large number of operator consoles. Again this is a major and business-critical system.
And of course every J2EE system in existence uses RMI internally, albeit almost entirely RMI/IIOP.

Placing Word File with Character Styles

InDesign CS5, windows 7
I am hoping for some guidance.
I am creating a directory from an Excel file. This is what I have done and where I am at.
1. Edited Excel File to ad "Headers" for Name, Address, etc...
2. Used Mail Merge in MS word to create a Directory.
- Created Character Styles in word for different fields.
- Did some minor editing to remove stray spaces, etc...
3. Placed wrod file in InDesign. Layout is created with basic text boxes that are split into 4 columns, each box linked to the next (I have about 30 pages of this).
At first, this was working OK, but the CHaracter styles were not coming through (Actually, they were lost during the merge in Word). So, I did some work and found that there was a code I could add to the Merge Fields oin Word to force the Character styles to be retained.
Anyway, I did that. However, now when I place the Word File in InDesign, it appears to hang at "Processing Character Styles".
I removed the code from the merge, figuring I could go back, but I still get that hang.
Any suggestions are appreciated...

I think I followed most of your explanation. But, since we can't see what you're doing, it's hard to know 100% what your reasons are for doing what you do. F'rinstance, I wonder why you're bothering with the Word merge at all. Without knowing why you have to run the merge in Word, I'd suggest this:
add headers to your Excel file
save out .csv
Use InDesign's Data Merge tool, skip Word entirely
Why do you need to use Word's Mail Merge? If you've never used Data Merge in ID, you should probably take a look at the Help file entry to see if it will work for you.

Problem with paragraph and character style

Recently I have noticed that when I alter a paragraph or character style that the text won't change to the changes I performed.
It doesn't matter whether it's just the preview mode or when I clicked "OK"- no changes will be performed whether it be typeface or size.
Does anyone know what can be wrong?

My bet is that you haven't got a clear understanding of the difference between character styles and paragraph styles, and that you are using the former incorrectly.
Paragraph styles include basic font formatting information that is applied to all text in a paragraph UNLESS that text also has either a character style or a local format override (select the text and change something) applied. The formatting heirarchy works with paragraph style at the bottom, character styles trump formatting applied in the paragraph style, and local formatting trums everything else.
Select the text in question. Look in the the Paragraph Style field in the Control panel, or open the Paragraph Styles panel to see what is applied. If there is a plus sign next to the name local formatting overrides have been applied (hold the Alt or Opt key and click the style name to remove them), but character styles are not considered overrides, so if there is no plus sign, check the Character Style field in the control panel or ope the Character Styles panel to check if any character styles are also applied.
