Charging for producing a dvd

Hi everyone,
I have a job that has 250 pictures that I have to scan into the computer and put them to music with 4 or 5 songs using final cut pro. I will also be adding movement to the pictures by enlarging the pictures and moving them around in the frame. Everything will be burned to a dvd. What should I charge (or what is the going rate) for a job like this. Thank you in advance for your help with this questions.

I find it amusing that everybody is suggesting using another app rather than FCP
I never use it for these tasks. Stills for the most part are large jpegs.
If I want to work efficiently using pan and scan techniques, I'll software that is designed and specialized to produce.
And the workflow is simplified.
No setting of keyframes, are dealing with dissolves.
PhotoToMovie
Still Life
FotoMagico
etc.
all do this exceptionally well, and much better the FCP.
Then I'll output a lossless codec movie, and encode that.
Much better results, IMO

  • Keynote good for producing self running DVD advertisements

I'm thinking of using Keynote to produce a DVD which is set to repeat and has pages that fade from one and to another of advertisements for local businesses. this would then be played in say a post office etc. I'm guessing Keynote would be perfect?
what are the limitations for me? will resolution be an issue?
I'm wondering what I set the resolution in it so that I get it right for when it goes and exports to imovie etc? any ideas?
anything else I should be considering that might not be ideal for iwork to do this type of project?
    thanks in advance

This can work as long as you have Quicktime Pro and Toast 8.
If you have QT pro, you can export your Keynote using Animation settings for export. That's the only way I've seen to get optimal quality. It does make for long exports and large files, though.
Then, drag your QT into Toast 8 and let it do the encoding. iMovie will just mangle anything except pure video.

Failure with one type of optical media and not another -- even from the same manufacturer -- is not unusual. DVDs and DVD-RWs use different dies that respond to different lasers in the optical drive. There are numerous other possibllities here.
It would not be unusual if the write laser for DVDs has burned out but the DVD-RW is still working becasue they use entirely separate lasers of a different intensity and frequency.
It may be the dyes used in a particular lot of Verbatim DVDs are not quite compatible with the DVD lasers in your drive (that is independent of DVD-RWs because they use different lasers.
Because of manufacturing variations your drive may burn other brands of DVD blanks flwlessly, but just won't work with Verbatim DVD blanks.
The DVD Read/Write lasers in your drive may simply be dirty.
Changing/updating the firmware in an optical can be done, but there is a definite risk of converting the optical drive into something useful only as a paper weight.
Try another brand of DVD blank or even a different model Verbatim. (I have seen cases where discs from a different manufacturing lot from the same vendor worked when another failed.)
If you are using DVD-R blanks try a DVD+R (there again different lasers are involved.
It is tricky to clean slot loading optical drives, but sometimes simply blowing them out with short bursts of canned air will work. Be sure the computer has been powered down for a good while and the optical drive is completely cooled. Then use only short bursts of air to prevent super cooled liquid air from getting into the drive. That can easily crack the lenses if you aren't careful.
If your Mac mini is less than a year old or you have Apple Care, get an appointment and take it to the Genius Desk of the nearest Apple store. If you aren't covered under warranty a bus powered external optical drive very probably costs less than the labor charge to diagnose the issue with your drive.

  • Is uncompressed 8-bit PAL 48 KHz the most compatible format for a HDV dvd

I have shot a project in HDV, edited in HDV sequence. I now want to produce a dvd, that is compatible on both widescreen and 4:3 tv's.
A friend suggested exporting a quicktime movie in uncompressed 8-bit PAL 48 KHz to ensure maximum compatibility.
Would people agree with using this setting?

i want to produce wedding dvds.whats the best software to use...final cut x I'm thinking but what about the quality of the dvd? Can i use idvd?

The only Programms I worked with are DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. You can burn a Video-DVD with Toast but  there is no real option to design your Menu. Just a few themes as far as I discovered.
Do you have a Blue Ray Device to burn* the HD-DVD? Are the Bride and Groom able to watch the Blue Ray?
    * which is only possible with DVD Studio Pro and not iMovie as far as I know.
    This might help
For better quality I would go the Compressor & DVD Studio Pro workflow I just learned.
Export the Movie as is from Final Cut Pro and then use Compressor to encode the File.
Consider delivering the Movie in a different way like a private video on vimeo, a Website or on an SD card which is not really romantic...

  • On 'Evenings & Weekends' yet charged for evening c...

How can someone be on the ‘Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan’ yet still be charged for evening calls? I have been in this situation since February.
I have contacted the Indian call centre on several occasions and each time they tell me the issue has been/will be resolved, but still the problem continues.  The first time I contacted them, before I was billed, I was told that it was just an issue with the online ‘recent usage’ feature, and once the bill was produced the charges would not appear.  Needless to say that wasn’t the case!
The problem appears to have started in February after I was finally credited the £81.62 I had been charged for supposedly cancelling my Unlimited Evening & Weekend deal service in October 2009, which I hadn’t.
Since then, as I said above, calls to the call centre have failed to help and I’m not sure what to try next.  Any ideas anyone please?  Write a letter to UK Customer Services or the Chief Executive’s office perhaps?

  • How much to charge for encoding?

I'm used to getting materials that are already pre-encoded/compressed from Final Cut Pro to a format I can use in DVD Studio Pro. I've been asked to bid on a project that would be 90-100 minutes in length that would have me do the encoding via Compressor and I'm not quite sure what to charge (as it would take hours and hours to do, I'm not sure my regular hourly rate would be appropriate, but don't want to screw myself out of $$$ either, especially since it would tie up the computer for a while).
What would be a good rate (I'm in the New York Metro area)
    Thanks for your help!

Since it wouldn't be entirely fair to charge for the time due to equipment to some degree, I have found that if I charge an average for encoding at a certain quality for so many minutes of film that would be more fair. For instance I would charge maybe .50 a min for a high quality compressed file. The idea isn't the price's I'm giving but rather a structured way to think of how to charge the customer. You're in an area that could charge more depending on the client and the availability of your serivces for a given price. Come up with things per hour and things per minute of film for the type of service you'll be rendering.

  • What is the best iLife program to produce a DVD based slideshow?

What is the best iLife program to produce a DVD based slideshow?
Here are the basic elements I’d like to use in my slideshow:
    * Ability to add text during the slideshow
    * Ability to incorporate music
    * Ability to add transitions (e.g. fades)
    * Usage of Ken Burns effect
    * Ability to specify start and end points for the Ken Burns effect
Previously I produced a DVD based slideshow in iMovie that used all of the elements above, however, I found it quite laborious. Can I accomplish the same things in either iPhoto or iDVD?
Can people who have had experience piecing together slideshows provide some feedback on when it’s best to use iPhoto vs iMovie vs iDVD when the final output is a DVD based slideshow?
    Thanks for your thoughts.

Your slideshow includes quite a number of elements and as to quite laborious, there is NO short-cut that will give you an easy fix

  • Suitable drive replacement(s) for a SONY DVD RW DW-U10A?

    HI,
Can anyone recommend a suitable replacement(s) for a SONY DVD RW DW-U10A as fitted to my 1Ghz G4 iMac? UK source would be welcome?
    Cheers!

    Hello,
    Internal.
Most replacement optical drives should work under Tiger/Leopard fine. If not Patchburn should get you burning again.
Most of us have Pioneer 'superdrives' installed by Apple so I usually recommend sticking with that product line. Really it's just a drive though.
The DVR-115 (20x DVD±RW DL for £18) seems a good deal to me (plus and hour or two of your time).
It's pretty fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be very cautious, especially around the video cable.Always take anti-static precautions. Here are three options for guiding you through the procedure:
    MacWorld
    xlr8yourmac
    Service Manuals
I've also taken a fair few photos which you can find here.
I'd advise reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac drive database so get other people's experiences first.
You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.
It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run in to snags - it's only a £6 part).
    External.
A whole lot less effort to install and should you upgrade to an Intel iMac / Mac Mini/ MacBook in the future you'll have access to this faster desktop spec tray loading drive rather than the slow laptop spec slot drive installed in these current Macs.
Here's one example. It's the 20x DVD±RW DL burner again, this time with Lightscribe and a copy of Toast:

  • Solar Charger for my Z10

I am considering buying a rollable, portable solar charger for my Z10. Would such a product with these specs,Max Power: 4.8 Watts, 300 mA (model f15-300) produce enough power to safely charge my device?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hello!
may i add some thoughts to this topic...i am working since a couple of years on solar chargers for mobile phones.
we do have a solution for this...our solar panel is foldable, keeps constant in performance under "hot" conditions (which most of the products in the market don´t do...your 300 mA are probably only available at 25 degree celcius...in the sun you get easily surface temp of over 60 degree celcius and your current will drop to 150 mA or even less)...I use Q10...it can be charged with 500 mA  (standard USB power) but not below 450 mA...for Z10 i cannot tell, because we did not test so far...best way is to use a solar panel and a seperate powerbank (no integrated designs!) which is dedicated to be charged by solar power...then you can charge your phone from this powerbank...it works very stable and you avoid keeping your phone in the sun...temp is too high!  Smartphones will interrupt charging function at temp above 40 to 45 degree celcius...which means Smartphone must be in the shadow!  We offer direct charging function as well, but recommend this only when sun is stable and temperature is low (or cold wind) I do not want to make advertising for my product here...but it really works...:-) but the solar cells we use and the powerbank technology has its price...solar power is great but so far expansive if done in a good way and not as a product which just just wants to catch the "green marketing trend"... since 3 weeks i have charged my phone ONLY by solar power...we have a south sided window at our office and i charge every day my powerbank and at evening i charge my Q10 from there. So finally...it may work!  ;-) Outdoor i do have my solar bag...and collect the energy to safe inside the powerbank. But the solar panel can also be mounted on backpacks...and has better usability...and is cheaper!  ;-)
maybe i could keep your interest for solar power solutions...create energy...it makes fun...and probably provides a bit more liberty when using our daily electronic gadgets...and it is renewable energy!
    best wishes from Vienna, Rafael
