Chess problem? Anyone?

My apple chess app is either freezing, crashing but mostly now white screening and making me have to force quit using power button on keypad as cursor not responding. I've run full diagnostic, deleted an app i recently downloaded (audacity) free, and scanned for malware with macscan2 which didn't find anything. Information on the forums is scant but i saw one thing that was about taking your main clock off auto. It worked for this guy but not me. Also the only probs i've seen reported are on snow leopard from 6 years ago. Forgive me if this is the wrong forum but i feel it's an osx issue. First time i've used forum as i've had very few probs in the nearly 2 years i've owned this machine. One of you brainiacs must know something so deal me the skinny as they say.

Need help with Backup problems - anyone seen this before?

I am experiencing 2 primary problems:
1) When attempting a recent backup with HotSync on my desktop PC (Treo 700p, HotSync Manager v. 6.01, XP): I hadn't backed up for a few weeks, and this time it crashed sometime during the backup of the Calendar (and this behavior is repeated). So I then unchecked the backup of Calendar, but then it just hung on Contacts for about 15 minutes, so I realized it wasn't doing anything anymore (I have lots of contacts, but not not 15 minutes worth). At this point I gave up, but I obviously need to figure out how to make HotSync work again. Any ideas?
2) (not sure if this is the forum to address this): When using Backup Buddy v. 2.04 a couple of days ago, every time I tried to backup, it would get maybe 1/5th into the backup and crash and restart. I figured out in short order that Address.DB is what was causing the crash. [I tried to e-mail the file so I could examine it and save it, but just attaching it in SnapperMail made the device crash]. So I took the chance of deleting the Address.DB (as it seemed small and didn't appear to contain any backup information), and it looks like all of my information was retained. My question here is: two times since the initial problem, something has recreated Address.DB, which again causes the 700p to crash, so I have had to delete it again. So when is this file being (re)created, and what is the purpose of it?
An additional (minor) difficulty that I've had occur on a couple of occasions: After a recovery (where my BackupBuddy information was more current than my HotSync data), I restored, and all the calendar entries were double - 2 identical entries adjacent to one another. Has anyone seen this?

I've just setup my new iPad Air. With new Apple ID ect everything working fine, but I can't redeem my iTunes voucher it says wrong password/ user name but they are not wrong. I've reset password same problem anyone help?

II've just setup a new iPad Air for my daughter with a new apple ect, everything is working fine, but I can't get it to redeem the I tunes voucher. It asks for I'd and password, put them in and comes up with wrong Id/password. They are not incorrect answers, but reset password just incase. Same problem. Also tried making another apple account. Thunderbolt cursor alignment problem anyone?

Today I just got a Thunderbolt screen and set up my new Macbook pro with it, and it seemed to be working great until I was using the clone stamp and the brush was out of alignment. This problem persists even despite uninstalling PS and reinstalling it, even without my previous preferences. The technicians I spoke to at Adobe didn't have a clue -- and wasted a lot of my time. I've read of many people having this problem, but no one has posted the solution yet. I can't believe photographers out there with Macs are putting up with this. I can't be the only one who has gotten this new screen. Anyone have any information?

I just spoke to Apple over here in France, and they say it's a compatibility problem with third-party software, and therefore up to Adobe to fix it. Nothing I could say could change that axiom, but in the end they did ask me to provide screen shots, articles and so on for their engineers to look at. This will take at least two weeks. In the meantime, I've got to just go back to using the Eizo screen that I've had for years. It's not so big and shiny, but at least it works. Thunderbolt is a big disappointment.
As far as I can tell so far, btw, this problem happens on the Thunderbolt screen, but not on the macbook screen, even for the same image at the same time. The brush diameter at which it occurs (ie at which the place where the pointer points is offset from where it will hit when you click) is smaller with a small image, and bigger with big ones. Please let me know if you'd like any further information -- perhaps to fix it on your end -- or to get Apple to fix it on theirs.

Lisa Loeb "Best of" CD Problems - Anyone Got a Solution?

I purchased the "Best Of" CD by Lisa Loeb Tuesday. I get a couple of tracks into the CD, and then iTunes tells me that my request cannot be processed because of some kind of unknown error and to try again later.
Well, I've been trying for 4 days now. I've been in contact with the support people, who have told me twice to make sure I have the latest version, which I do (6.0.2.23 or something akin to that). Then, they say the "unknown problem" is fixed when it hasn't.
I guess my question is - has anyone been able to download the album successfully? I've downloaded albums from them before, but I'm hesitant until this issue is resolved, since I have what they call a purchase queue.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

NForce 7xx playing video problems : anyone ?

just found this information on a very good and serious french site I use to visit everyday (a must visit everyday to found out news drivers, bios, firmwares, etc...) : it seems that nVidia is investigating a video corruption problem (glitches, freezes, crazy cursor etc...) when playing video (DVD, DivX, whatever), especially with XP. this is not a video card problem as ATI card are also experiencing the problem on nVidia 7xx based mobos.
I thought I was doing something wrong because I've often encountered this , but actually, it's still there, no matter which drivers (chipset and/or video) I've tried...
anyone with such a problem in here ?

We have been able to reproduce the issue on nForce 780i SLI and nForce 750i SLI platforms. We have released a BIOS fix for these platforms. Preferences problem -- anyone solved this yet?

I have the same problem experienced by several people on the forum: cannot open iPhoto08 preferences. I've tried trashing the plist file, repairing permissions, resetting LaunchServices database (in Onyx 1.8.2), lots of restarts, etc. I also deleted the Flickr export plugin, since that was the only difference between iPhoto on this computer and on my G4 powerbook (iPhoto08 prefs work on the powerbook).
Has anyone solved this problem? IF so, how?

Put in the Mac OS X Install Disc 1. Then, open pacifist and click "Open Apple Install Packages".

Right-click (ctrl-click) on "Image Capture.app" and select "Install to Default Location".
You should now see "Image Capture.app" in your Applications folder. Go ahead and open it, go to Preferences, close Preferences, and you should now get the preferences for iPhoto '08.
I've tried it and it works for me as well. Thanks to jhbiddle for pointing me in the right direction and for where to find the "Image Capture.app".

CHESS PROBLEM (Clearing House Electronic Subregister System)

"CHESS is used to keep track of which clients own how many shares in which stocks, where a stock is basically a company. CHESS is one of the two main systems provided by the ASX (Australian stock exchange)".
So what i have to do is design, document, implement and test a complete, simple, text-based version of CHESS. Your application must have two independent components:
1. The model: One or more interfaces and classes that implement the basic database system.
2. The view: One or more classes that provide a user interface to the database system.
I didn't even know i could use java to create a database first of all. So this only ideas ive had is using .txt files in a program directory and searching through them for key clients or storing data in hashmaps and arraylists.
Anyone with experience care to explain a real or appropriate method a student can use to create this program. Because this project seems abit to out for my league for my 2nd ever programming project.
Anything of help would be greatly appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken the Berkely DB system is basically just a bunch of text files with key-value pairs. You could try something like that. Another option is to create a schema in which each each record must have a fixed length (so the length of a string would be limited). This would allow you to know that a new record starts every 40 bytes, or something along those lines. Another common practice is to start each field off with a number that indicates the total length of the field. This allows the lengths of the field to vary, but it also means you can only move sequentially through the file. You don't have random access to the data.
Obviously, for a second year project, I doubt they expect you to write a sql engine for this, so you will probably wan't to provide methods to do most of what anybody would want to do with the data.
You're going to want to implement some scheme for serializing and deserializing records from the database, so that you can work with them as objects, instead of byte arrays.

Ati 4850 24in iMac long term display problems anyone?

so im seeing blotches and lines on my iMac along with some odd pink spots here and there. 2 lcd replacments failed to fix the problem and all apple can say is "come in to an apple store". I cant as i just dont have the time and they still wont do anything to resolve my issue and they wont even replace my iMac. has anyone with the ati 4850 24in iMac had the same or similar issues later on. I can't believe apple wont fix my problems its just disappointing.

I tried both downloads and neither ended up changing the driver. I selected custom install and the driver that it said it was going to install was the one Apple provided, not the 9.12 one, even though that's what I downloaded. Dumb. I did the driver rollback and though it helped the banding, it's still there a little bit. I'm guessing I shouldn't see anything at all.
Edit: When I noticed the banding a little bit even after the rollback, I was looking at the default Win7 background. After switching to some of the other backgrounds, I'm not really noticing anything anymore. Maybe that default image has some in the image itself? But yea, it was definately terrible regardless with the 3.1 drivers

Macbook pro isight quality problems anyone?

Hi,
Is anyone facing problems with the quality of the isight camera on the retina macbook pro?
It feels like the image is very badly compressed and the outcome is muddy and not smooth.
My old Imac at 640x480 had a much better image? is it worth sending it back for replacement or do you think this is an OS issue which will be resolved?

If:
(1) the image of a static, constantly lighted, subject shown from your iSight is changing color as you watch it,
and
(2) you have not added any third party software to manually control your iSight (example: iGlasses)
then yours is likely a hardware problem that will require professional service by an Apple-Authorized Service Provider.
If Apple's troubleshooting suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 don't correct your problem, (be sure to test more than one app in more than one user account,) make a current backup of all your important files and then see your AASP for service.

ITouch EQ Problem - Anyone experienced the same?

Hi there everyone
I received my iTouch last Tuesday and this is my first ipod. Put around a 100 cds on it and then set the EQ to Bass Boost. I like my bass high!
On bass heavy tracks and some drum heavy tracks I experienced very distorted sound (like an underwater "rumble"). Turn the EQ to R&B, Dance and Pop and the same thing. Turn the EQ off and everything is ok! Unfortunately the sound is then too "thin" for my ears.
Took the unit back to the Apple store in London's Regent Street and the assistants agreed with me and swapped the unit over (minus the engraving)! Tried the second one and exactly the same sound problem. Returned to the store again and armed with the source CD's the guys in the shop opened another iTouch and burnt the CD's to a mac book and then transferred them to the new itouch - same problem. They then transferred the songs to a "normal" iPod and the sound was perfect.
Anyone else experienced this and does anyone know what may cause this problem - software / firmware?
I received a full refund but this is such an amazing piece of technology that I would like to get an iTouch without this problem

I read somewhere recently that the new ipods do have a different sound chip than the previous generation. From personal experience, i only use the bass boost on tracks with abnormaly low bass. Once again personal preference. If it was a manual eq say on your home stereo, and you set the bass all the way up, chances are you would hear distorted bass from your speakers as the track you were listening to already had alot of bass. Correct? If I'm listening to a country song and I have the eq setting with enhanced bass, it sounds fine. If I switch to rap, it distorts. I know from experience to change the eq based on what I'm listening to. This has been true for all of my ipods prior to the touch also. I don't really blame apple. That is why there is a variety of eq's provided. I wouldn't hold my breath for a software update as I think it is more user preference. Forget what name is assigned to the eq and give them all a listen. If none are good enough, you may need to choose another product. Hope this helps a little .

**GMAIL** Problems anyone?

I keep having this issue. I have my gmail account linked (properly) through the iPhone, as most do. When I recieve an email in my inbox, I will open it without a problem. Since most of us figured out by now that we can't recieve picture messages through SMS, I have solved it by having my contacts email me the pics from their phone to my phone. Like I said, no problem recieveing the email, or opening. The picture is attached I am able to view it, BUT, if I open the email again later on, whether it's 20 mins or an hour, the attached picture is gone! There is a message in the email that says: "This message has not been downloaded from the server." It's not so bad because I have the same email when I get to my computer in my inbox, but it's kind of like, okay, why can I only view it once and then it's gone? If someone sent me a pic, and I had to show it to someone, say later on that day on my phone, I can't?! Does anyone else have this issue with GMAIL or any other email type? Did I miss something?

Noticed i am not alone today having problem connecting to Gmail on my phone. So if you having a problem accessing your Gmail on your phone today here are the steps:
Go to any computer available and login into your Gmail. It would ask you to confirm that this is your account and will ask for your phone number. Enter it and Google will send you a code to your phone to confirm it. Enter it on your computer and it should login to your desktop jsut fine.
After that go to gmail on your phone and refresh your inbox. It would say password is not right. Go to Settings and re-enter your regular Gmail password you always used. Click Save and try to refresh it again.
It should work. Just worked on mine.

Certain I have an ISP iTunes download problem - anyone else experienced?

I live in Jakarta and I recently switched to a new ISP. I can download all podcasts onto my PC and selected ones from my MacBook Pro but many constantly get the stopped err = -3150. The PC can access all websites I type in but the Mac doesn't allow me to connect to the same ones. It's odd but I think between iTunes and Safari and the PC working just fine that I have an ISP problem with the Mac. Anyone else had this happen and what was the final resolution if any?

From what I've read, this definitely has to do with your ISP. Give them a call and let them know what is happening.

IPhone 3G Reception Problems - anyone taken it apart?

Not sure if the rest of you are having issues loading the long thread about this, but it's gotten so long, I can't even get it to load anymore - it also keeps saying it's running some script. Thought I would start a new thread with a new question...
There's all this talk of poor 3G reception - I agree, it's pretty bad. I was on a conference call yesterday driving from Downtown Houston to the Galleria - fairly big urban city with what's supposed to be massive 3G coverage - dropped the call 3 times - once in my parking garage, once getting on the freeway, and once arriving at the Galleria. I had 3G on. The Apple Store Genius told me he leaves 3G off and only use it for web and data.
I also noticed that every iPhone in the store was on Edge, none on 3G - couldn't get a signal.
There still seems to be great debate as to if this is an AT&T issue or an Apple issue - some have said perhaps a problem with the antenna - well, has anyone taken the thing apart to see if there's an antenna issue? I know Gizmodo or one of them dismembered an iPhone, I'd of thought they'd see something.
I do notice that if I put my hand on the bottom of the phone, I definately lose signal - move it away and the bars go up - is that the phone, or AT&T - or both?
Sorry for rambling - I just wish someone would be able to do a little more accurate testing than all of our anecdotal thoughts....

You can not compare 3G reception to GSM reception. It's apples and oranges.
The 3G network is completely new cell sites. It has far less density than the old GSM network. In other words there is not one 3G site for ever 1 GSM. It's more like 1 3G for every 5-6 GSM sites (or even worse, depending on where you are.)
Have you ever had a 3G AT&T phone?
I haven't had a dropped call, but admittedly I haven't spent a lot of time on phone calls since I got it. But I had calls drop occasionally going from 3G to GSM on my last two. Usually it didn't happen, but there were a few places I could get it to happen every time.

Support with house move problems - anyone know how...

Just wondered if anyone knew how to actually get an answer or solution from BT regarding problems moving home?
For the 2nd time today and the third time in 3 days I've been on hold for over 40 minutes, having been bounced from two or three different departments yet again following 2 weeks of nonsense, 2 cancelled orders (by them), and utterly rubbish support!
Has anyone found a department that can actually help or have any advice please - any mods out there that could help escalate?
