Choosing a hard drive enclosure for iBook

I am looking to buy a cheap enclosure for the hard drive from my (wife's) g3 700 dual USB ibook that is now dead. What are the essential specifications that I need for an enclosure to work with this hard drive. It is the 20gb model, 2.5-inch Ultra ATA. Most of the descriptions say the internal interface is IDE. Some say SATA. What will I need to be sure it will work for this drive?
Here's a cheap one--will it work:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817155002
OTHER INFO:
Since my iBook is now dead, I want to sell all the parts. Since it will no longer boot into Target mode, I cannot erase the hard drive. Turns out that I'm glad I didn't erase it after first copying it, because something went wrong with the copying and not all the folders are accessible from my backup. I'm not exactly sure what went wrong, but the total copy should have been 18gb, and was only 13.5gb.
Apparently, when I selected all the folders from the root directory on the hard drive and dragged them to an external drive to copy them, the alias folders on my desktop did not copy the linked original folders and the original folders did not copy anywhere else. I would like to finish the copy and then erase the drive to sell on eBay. So I need an enclosure.

The Rosewill is exactly the one I bought. The shipping was $4.99, more than the enclosure!
It went great.
The drive would not fit in the enclosure without modifying the drive by removing a couple of side screws that stick out too far, but I didn't want to keep the drive or the enclosure so I didn't mess around with it. I just ran it out in the open, not in the enclosure.
You just plug the drive into the enclosure plug, then plug the USB cable (which they supplied) into both the enclosure and your computer. It immediately mounted on my iMac and I got to work (see below).
Since it was USB 1.1, it was slow, which I knew in advance, but I wanted CHEAP not fast, and this did the trick.
I ended up downloading and using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0 to be sure I got everything this time from the old drive. It worked great--I would highly recommend it!
I plan to eBay the enclosure. How cheaply do you think I can ship it? If you are interested, let me know and I'll send you the item# on eBay. It will be hard to beat Newegg's $8 with 3-day shipping!

  • Need help finding correct external hard drive enclosure for a T61 hard drive

Hi, recently my lenovo T61's video card fizzled out right after the warranty expired. I have information on the laptop's hard drive that i need to get off of it. I have a hard drive enclosure for my old hp laptop's hard drive but the two drive have different connectors. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to find a lenovo T61 hard drive compatible external hard drive enclosure.
The hard drive is a 100 GB 7200 RPM drive

what model is your HP laptop? also how old is it?
Prior to SATA connector there is the PATA connector.

  • Recommended hard drive enclosure for use with FCP?

I will be doing capture and editing from my main HD, but want a firewire HD for backup. ANy recommendations on enclosures?

I agree with David. Don't capture to your boot drive. External firewire drives are cheap and you also install an extra drive within you G5 case if that is what you are using. If on a laptop.. then firewire drives are the way to do.
I know you asked about enclosures but I always love to pass along my current drive fav... G-Raid.

  • What hard drive enclosure to purchase for HP Pavilion dv6000?

I am trying to find a hard drive case/enclosure for my 2005 HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop.  I want to retrieve all of the data from my hard drive because I can no longer charge the laptop.  I have tried two different types of hard drive enclosure, but neither worked.  Can you tell me the proper model to order?

    Hi:
    One of them will work.
You need to remove the hard drive connector interface that connects the hard drive to the motherboard.
This thing pulls off the drive. You should be using a SATA to usb notebook hard drive enclosure.

  • Recommended SCSI to SATA converter for older external hard drive enclosure?

I have a SCI external hard drive enclosure that I would like to be able to use a with a SATA drive. Can anyone suggest an inexpensive, reliable SCSI to SATA bridge board?

Those are both good points. It's a really nice enclosure (its a red FW400 drive that instead of being a rectangular box, it has this funky wave shape). I could just use the drive with an existing SCSI drive and make it for something that doesn't need high r/w speeds like documents.

If I choose a hard drive ask my backup disk for time machine, will it clear out the data that was previously stored in my hard drive?

    Hello edjhsu,
Unless the drive is in a format that isn't compatible with Time Machine, the files will not be overrwitten. However it is typically a better idea to keep your files and your backup separate, especially since files on the Time Machine drive will not be backed up by Time Machine.

  • Hard drive enclosure

    Hi,
I bought a Eaglebit- Writebox external hard drive enclosure to house my old iBook G3 40 GB hard drive. I'm fairly confident I assembled it properly, but I can't see to get my MacBook (original black model) to recognize it. It doesn't show up in Disk Utility, system profiler, or anywhere else. It is a IDE/SATA to USB enclosure. There is no power source other than the USB connection. When I switch the device on, it doesn't make any noise, so I'm not even sure if it is running?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

The two USBs on the cord are to power the drive on certain computers that can't provide enough power on USB to spin the drive properly.
Can you provide a link to the enclosure you bought? (Looks like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817193033)
Despite it saying that it is compatible with Mac OS X, many people say it isn't in the reviews. You may be out of luck.
What are you trying to do? Do you have another computer? Do you have Leopard on another computer to use with Time Machine? If that's the case, I'd recommend you just clone the G3 HDD to a new external enclosure/HDD that you would buy if you are trying to transfer information.

  • New Hard Drive Enclosure not being detected by Mac

Hi. I've been having problems with my external hard drive. I went out and bought a hard drive enclosure today at Best Buy for more storage on my eMac. After putting it together, I plugged it into my Windows 7 computer to test it out and it worked perfectly, but when I tried to plug it into my Mac computer nothing happened. I went to Disk Utility to check for the drive but nothing appeared. All the USB ports on my computer work great as I have used them all before, but I am unsure as to why it can't detect my drive. I then tried plugging the drive into the USB port in the keyboard and at least got a "USB Low Power Notice". (Better than nothing, right?) This is a relatively old mac computer (2003?) and the software has never been updated because its not connected to the internet and never has been. The USB hard drive enclosure uses USB 3.0 and the hard drive has been formatted to NTFS. Is there anything I can do to get it to work? I can access it and everything on my Windows computer, so why does it not even appear in Disk Utility or the USB Device Tree on my Mac? The manual says that it is compatible with both Mac and PC. Thanks in advance.

If your hard drive plugged into a Windows machine and worked, then it is probably formatted with FAT32 or ExFAT. For some reason, a lot of eMac's have trouble mounting disks formatted with such file systems. If possible, back up any data on the hard drive, format it to Mac OS Extended, and try it with the eMac again.
Also, it is trivial to try the ports with other devices that are known to work with the eMac, etc, etc.

  • Hello, My computer crashed, I removed the hard drive and installed it into a hard drive enclosure and now I am trying to get my Thunderbird data off of it

    Hello,
Thank you for taking a look at my problem. My Windows computer crashed so I removed the hard drive and installed it into a hard drive enclosure and connected it to my new Windows computer with a USB cord. I installed Mozilla Thunderbird on my new computer and read the different tutorials on this website for extracting data from the external hard drive and installing it on my new computer however I cannot seem to be able to find the files that I need and quite frankly I do not know how to move them once I do find them. I even tried MozBackup but it could not find the files either. I searched for profiles.ini in the hard drive and the only hit I got was a profiles.ini file that was 111 bytes in size. I assumed that this was not what I was looking for but I did save a copy on my desktop. If someone has experience with moving files from a hard drive to a new computer I would be grateful for the help.
    Thanks,
    AN

lets get with the program. Mozbackup is useless in this situation because it looks for your profile in the location Thunderbird says it is.
You biggest hurdle is probably setting windows to show system and hidden files. The %appdata% folders are hidden by windows.

  • Can't format external hard drive enclosure

I connected a 250gb external hard drive enclosure to my mac osx 10.3.9. I was told that it was formatted to windows and that i would have reformat it to mac.
I was given instructions to go to Disk Utility, select the volume and click on the partition tab, but a partition tab didn't appear when i pressed it.
I checked out the info for the volume and this is what it gave me:

    Disk Identifier : disk1s1
    Mount Point : /Volumes/New Volume

    Can Be Formatted : No
    Bootable : No

    Journaled : No
    Disk Number : 1
    Partition Number : 1
Final Cut Pro wouldn't let me use it as a sratch disk because it says it is on write-protected.
Does anyone know what i have to do to get the volume to work.
    Thank you.

    Jayden:
Here are some directions for formatting and partitioning a HDD:
    Partitioning a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel.
Select # of partition in pulldown menu above Volume diagram.
Select 1 partition at a time and resize. (you can type size in the size field in main pane).
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select each volume, in turn, under Manufacturer ID.
    Select on Security Options button.
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Quit Disk Utility.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has some hints on partitioning.
Please don't hesitate to post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • External hard drive setup for time machine reading as a virtual cd

Why is my MacBook Pro reading my external hard drive setup for time machine reading as a virtual cd?
    Thanks

    Hi Christian,
Is this something that has happened from the start? If so, I would reformat the disk and setup TM from scratch again.
Prepare the external HD by connecting to the Mac, open Disk Utility, select the manufacturer’s name of the external HD, select Partition and choose GUID Partition Table, format to Apple OS Extended (Journaled); quit Disk Utility.
    Open System Preferences.
    Click on Time Machine.
    Click on “Select Disk.”
Click just to the left of "On" to turn TM on if it's not already on.
Click on the disk or partition you want to use.
    Click on “Use for backup.”
Leave external HD connected, and TM will automatically do its thing.

  • Looking to Buy a Hard Drive Enclosure - Opinions?

I'm looking to buy a hard drive enclosure to attach to my linux box, and I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with the AEN-U35SE from Airlink (see http://www.airlink101.com/products/aenu35se.php ). It's fairly cheap at my local Fry's, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any issues with it, both with linux compatibility and cooling (they say it's fanless, and I'm not sure if that's good or bad). This would be attached to a server as bulk storage and wouldn't be under high usage, but I'm not wanting to doom my hard drive to certain death.
I can't find any reviews of it at all online, so I guess it must be at least fairly new. It's not carried by Tigerdirect or NewEgg, so I can't find anything there.
    EDIT:
Gah, this product is apparantly discontinued, which is probably why NewEgg and TigerDirect didn't have it. Anything anyone can recommend? I only need one drive, and fanless is good as long as the drive doesn't overheat.

On the issue of enclosures .... nothing I can recommend because so far I'm not happy with any I bought. On the compatibility side they are all ok but after a good period of time (1year or 1.5years) the the hd sometimes starts acting strange. It stops and restarts almost immediately, a problem that doesn't happen when I plug it inside my desktop pc. In one of the external enclosures I have narrowed the problem to the power supply.
I could plug a Y power cable and monitor the voltages with a multimeter, the 5V rail would be 4.5V when the disk acted strange but for some reason sometimes the rail was close to the nominal 5V (4.9V~5.1V) and everything would work well.
Because of this I have started to believe that the power supplies that have the 12V and 5V output are a big no no, there are several reasons for me not to like it specially because all of the 2 I have behave the same way >_<.
If possible I would get an enclosure that receives only 12V from the outside and then generates the 5V internally but I believe that is hard to find.
The two enclosures I have have are:
http://en.vipower.com/products01_01.php?ID=154  (this one as a bit expensive usb2 to ide)
    http://www.tecforsis.pt/produto.asp?idproduto=16907  (cheap box usb2 to sata/ide)

  • SATA to Firewire hard drive enclosure recommendations?

I just picked up my new MacBook Pro last week and am planning to sell my Dual 1.8 Powermac and white MacBook soon.
I have a 250GB 3.5" SATA drive in the PowerMac that I want to keep and put in an external enclosure for use with my MacBook Pro.
Any recommendations on SATA to Firewire 3.5" external hard drive enclosures? Of course I'd prefer it be as small as possible.
