Cinema display has lit on, black screen

Hi everyone-
I have been searching the forums on a fix to the issue I am having. I am currently using a 17" MacBook pro (2006) and have a 22" apple LCD cinema display (from 2002) as my primary display. I use both at the same time. I have never had an issue with either and originally bought my display brand new in '02. Just yesterday as I got back to my desk, I tried to wake my system up, with the MacBook pro running fine and the 22" keeping the black screen. The light stays on underneath however. After shutting down, restarting, unplugging, etc the screen would not work the way it normally does. Every once in a while the screen would turn on, but was dark. When the screen is black, the light underneath is bright. When the screen would display, the light was faint. It would go back and forth between on and dull and completely black. The light continues to stay on when connected to a power source.  It turns off when disconnected from power, and no matter how long I wait to plug it back in the light turns back on.
Thanks everyone for your help!

That's what I thought the situation was.
With the 22" "out" and as your primary screen how are you able to run since the menu bar would be on the screen you cannot see?
I think, for the moment, you need to make your MBP your primary.  Hopefully if you disconnect the external 22" (may have to reboot) your MBP should become the primary.  Then go into the Displays system preferences and make sure it is the primary with the Arrangement tab (move the little menu bar on to your MBP screen in Arrangement).
Now, at least you can control the Displays prefs for both monitors.  If you reconnect the 22" (again may have to reboot) click detect displays and gather windows to get the Displays prefs for the blacked out 22" on to your main monitor (which is now your MBP).
Check the resolution and refresh rate.  If they are ok then again I still think there is something wrong with the 22".  But it couldn't be definitively be determined unless you could connect that 22" to another machine.
After thought:  Your definitions of "primary" and "secondary".  Maybe they don't agree with my definitions.  I specify the "primary" monitor as the one containing the menu bar.  Is that your definition? If so my original question about how are you able to run without seeing the menu bar on the 22" stands.  But it occurs to me that your definitions may be that you still keep the menubar on your MBP but just work with the 22" most of the time.

My iPhone 4S has a blank black screen but when someone calls me I can answer it, I just can't see anything

Try a reset: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Apple 27" cinema display has died I think, after 5 hours!!!

I finally took delivery of my new Mac pro and cinema display today and after 5 hours use the screen has gone blank, and I can't get any life from it! I can't believe this has failed after only 5 hours use! Is there any way I can confirm it is the screen and not the graphics card or Mac. Has any one else had this issue with this display. I well and truely gutted, got to wait for a new one to be sent.

Are you sure it's the monitor that went out? Or has your mac pro "shut down"? "Shut down" in this case can mean a full shut down -- power light out, no fans running, totally off. Or it may be (and I experienced this -- more about that in a moment) power light on, and maybe a single exhaust fan running?
Full power off, nothing running, could be the most serious. I have no ideas about that.
Power light on, a single exhaust fan running is probably a thermal cutoff. It may be your video card is overheating. I experienced this because about 5% of the time the fan motor in my video card would not start (bad bearing or bad lubrication?). Card would overheat, monitor went black when the machine thermal cutoff. But it would always take less than 5 minutes for the card to overheat. Not 5 hours. So I am not sure it's the same problem as you have.
If your machine is still fully on -- all fans running, then maybe it is just a bad monitor. Or as you say it could still be the video card. But I think only applecare would need to diagnose any of these problems.
Note, in my case applecare did not diagnose my problem, I did. And it was only by accident because one time I just happened to be looking at the video card just after booting and noticed the video cooling fan wasn't running.

  • Would like to know if I can connect a macbook pro and link to a PC in any way and still access the macbook pro's files. Display is out/have black screen. I want to back up before I send for repair, but don't own another mac to restart 7.

Is there any way to connect my 2011 macbook pro to my PC laptop (Dell) so that I can get files off of the Mac? The display on the pro is out and I've got a black screen. The computer turns on. Actually it turned on one time after many tries and when I took it the Mac store the guy hit restart before I could stop him. I don't have another Mac to back up files to in restart 7 mode and I can't see my external hard drive to copy to when the computer has no display, so I am at a loss on how to get the files. I would like to get them before I send in for repairs. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The only other thing I can think of is to pull the drive out and hook it to another machine with a USB enclosure. Something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388312417&sr=8-2&keywords=2.5+enclosure
Then you could read it like an external USB drive. It's easy to open up and get the drive out.

  • MBP and LED Cinema Display Color Washed Out After Screen Saver

When coming out of screen saver, often the color profile on either my LED Cinema Display or the MBP LCD is messed up. The color looks washed out. Simply going to the Color tab in the Displays preference pane fixes this.
How do I get this to stop?
    Thanks,
    Bobby

My 13" MBP has now started to do the same thing as described. The thing is, it has never done this since I bought it in late July 2009. I have iWork installed, Firefox, Skype, and Pixelmator. I may have a clue, however, for the Apple people: my MBP never did this until last night and this morning. The only thing I changed yesterday was removing the 2 gig of memory and installing 4 gig. I also tried the translation widget for the first time.

  • Mid-2010 macbook pro has started having "black screens"

apple store diagnosed as "software failure".  they wiped it clean & gave me instructions to reinstall/restore from backup at home.  successfully reinstalled but another black screen after about an hour.
i am NOT a computer person so i need kindergarten language/instructions/suggestions (fitting, as i was a kinder teacher).  i am a 6 hour roundtrip to the apple store, living in a rural town after 35+ years of living in an area of 6 million with MANY apple stores close by.
has this happened to anyone else & if so, can you tell me how you corrected it?  again, VERY elementary language please!
    thank you!
    p.s.  i have since upgraded to OS X 10.9.2 & while it's listed that i have vmware fusion (i do), i don't use it...

You may have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try. There's a very specific test Apple has for this called the VST, which should detect the problem. I don't think all the Genius Bar folks are aware of this issue, so it's best to ask for it specifically. Take along a copy of your kernel panic report if you're getting one.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
What you can do to use it is download gfxstatus from http://gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel. That will lessen the panics at the expense of graphics speed.
You may be eligible for a depot repair, which is a flat rate of about $310. Ask at the Genius Bar.

  • My 20" cinema Display has a vertical band of grey interferance up the middle of the display

I have a 20" Cinema display that suddenly displays a grey column of interferance up through the moddle of the screen. One post suggested that it was caused by a build up of static in the montor body and that screen cleaning with anti-static may work. It didn't but 10 minutes later the interferance had gone. This could have been coincidental as switching on my computer this morning the grey column is back. Any body any ideas or is this going to waste a lot of time that could be spent earning my living.

What kind of mac?  Can you try using another monitor?  Could either be the monitor or the video card is failing.
Try smc and pram reset but I don't think it will change anything.

  • My iPod has a flickering black screen and will not turn on. What can I do?

I accidentally left my iPod in my car for a few hours. It reached about 80 degrees outside, so I am worried. It did not turn on at all. Afterwards, I let it cool down and it still will not turn on. I plugged it into my laptop (PC) and it still does nothing. If flickers between two shades of black, but it does not do anything. I am starting to think it may have affected the battery. I have been experiencing problems with it not wanting to turn on without being plugged in for months now, but I did not really do anything about it.
I need help. I do not know what to do, so any form of help will be greatly apreciated!

I was afraid of this, to be honest. I kind of figured that I broke it completely.
I no longer have a warranty on it because I have had it for about three years, so I do not even know if it is worth taking in or if I would be better off with buying a new one.
If I were to replace the battery, would that help with the display or would it still be flickering a black screen?
    * Sidenote: I do not like that I am not too savvy when it comes to Apple products, so I apolgize if it seems like I am repeating myself or sound confusing.

  • Albook G4 Display Has White Bar Bottom Screen

    Hello all:
My Albook G4 display has a white bar on the bottom third of the screen. Last year I followed these steps to fix tighten the hinges: http://macintoshhowto.com/hardware/how-to-fix-a-loose-hinge-on-an-aluminium-powe rbook.html
and I'm guessing I may have damaged, loosend or otherwise screwed up the connections. Any suggestions? TIA!

Thanks for your reply. Not quite sure when the issue started (my daughter's machine) but I think its been progressing for several months.
Before your reply, I was thinking hardware (monitor cable) but at your suggestion I ran TechTools - no issues. I also checked and repaired permissions, ran the fsck -fy in single user mode, and changed the desktop picture and screen saver options. It seemed to have cleared up, but when I adjust the screen position (open or close) the same area briefly acts up. I still think it may be a connector or cable issue, but there obviously was some sort of software issues too, so thanks for your suggestion. Is there a tutorial on how to check the screen connections that you would recommend? Thanks again!

  • My ipod touch has a totally black screen and is unresponsive, how do I fix it?

Long story short, my 3rd generation touch is completely unresponsive: black screen and everything. I've tried resetting, no go. Still black. I've tried charging, no go, still black. I can't even reset it because windows doesn't detect it when it's plugged in.
I worked fine an hour previous to its unresponsiveness.
    How can I fix this?

If not successful try the remaining items of:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
If not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • TS3533 How can I shut down my PowerBook wiyh retina display in case of black screen and nonresponsive keyboard after sleep?

Installed OS 10.82 and EFI update and put the system to sleep. Trying to wake it again resulted in black screens and an irresponsive keyboard: there seems to be no way to shut the system down in this case. My solution was to unplug the machine and let it blow the fans and run "by itself" untill it after several hours shut down because of low battery charge. After plugging it in again, it would start on key board command and now works fine.
Question: Is emptying the battery really the only way shut the laptop down in this case?

All you should need to do is push and hold the on/off button for a few seconds. It should shut it down cold.
If it doesn't you may have a defective machine.
