Cisco Prime - Running LMS on a Windows PDC

Greetings,
Due to certain limitations we must run Cisco Prime on a Windows PDC (Primary Domain Controller).  This isn't supported, and the install/upgrade won't let you accomplish this, but I think on our Windows 2008 R2 Server Cisco Prime was originally installed on a stand-alone server that was later changed to a PDC.  We're running LMS 4.2.3 and it seems to run fine but now we need to upgrade but the installer won't allow it.  Has anyone out there come up with a workaround that allows you to run an upgrade on a PDC?
Any clever ideas on how to circumvent this greatly appreciated!
George

I see better what you mean now I didn't associate AD with the windows domain.
Yes I too had a customer where the LMS server down after it was "targeted" by a GPO from a policyserver.
I was good for doing a reinstall of LMS until on of people of their network team found what policy clobbered the server. He could then revert the damage.
Basically the server is best left alone as well as the casuser account.
Actually the prefered situation from cisco is to take the machine out of the domain (standalone).
Cheers,
Michel

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 on Windows Server/Hyper-V

    Hi Everyone,
In Entriprise environment while designing a BYOD solution we need to integrate ISE3315 with CPI 1.2. I know that Cisco ISE software either runs on 3315 platform or other option is virtual appliance (which is VMware based). Now problem is that we have Hyper-V environment as standard so I need to go with ISE-3315. Here my concern is to I install CPI 1.2 on Hyper-V, or on a Windows Server (2008 or 2012) based machine. Is that doable?
Any help, suggessions would be warmly welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Azhar...

Cisco Prime LMS will slowly be phased out in favor of Cisco Prime Infrastructure and hence there are no new mainline releases are planned to provide support to new Hardware or virtualization support.
However, Prime LMS do support Hyper V Virtualization (As an installable in Windows 2008). Please note that Virtualization technologies like, VMWare and Hyper V virtualization systems are not supported in LMS 5000, and LMS 10000 Devices license, in Windows. VMWare Systems are supported in LMS 5000, and LMS 10000 Devices license in Soft Appliance. • Ciscoworks LMS 3.0 to Cisco Prime Infrastructure LMS 4.2

In order to complete the upgrade the LMS 3.x runs over a physical server that ends with the upgrade(server its gona be retired), the think is that the Cisco Prime comes with an UCS and its gona run over a VM. The question here is the "Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.1 - Maj Upg from LMS 2.x/3.x" media could be runs as clean install, I mean with no LMS 3.x intalled  before? an the "Prime Infrastructure LMS 4.2 - 1.5K Device Maj Upg Lic" could be registered with no license installed of LMS 3.x?

There are a couple of things to distinguish:
    1. The product SKU you need to order to migrate from LMS 3 to LMS 4.2.
    2. The license file that is installed on that new LMS server.
#1 is based on Cisco agreeing, usually through the partner or reseller you are working with, that you are entitled to order the upgrade SKU (vs. buy a complete new product). The upgrade SKUs are all listed in the ordering guide here.
L-PI12-1.5K-UP (note - NOT the 1.1 product description you noted in the original post) would be the SKU for a major upgrade from LMS 2.x/3.x to the current Prime Infrastructure 1.2 release at the 1500 device license level. That upgrade includes licenses for both PI 1.2 and Prime LMS 4.2. You may choose which to install - most LMS customers stick with LMS for now as PI 1.2 does not yet have full feature parity. Your managed devices should not exceed 1500 combined (in this case) but that combined number is not enforced technically by the product's license daemon.
Once you have purchased the product and have the media you can install it on any host that meets the installation prerequisites as far as OS, memory, disk etc. A clean installation of LMS does not check for or require a previous installation as far as technical checks.
#2 - Once you have installed the new LMS server (and optionally a step near the end of installation, you need to add in the license file (*.lic file). That is obtained through the Cisco licensing portal (or via the TAC if you prefer) using the Product Activation Key (PAK) received with your product.

  • Cisco Prime Running in Microsoft Hyper-V

    Hi,
We already have Ciscp Prime LMS 4.2 now and we want to migrate from physical server to Microsoft HYPER-V. Are this possible? Any issues when run in HYPER-V. Please advise.

    Hi Omar,
Unfortunately ,it is not supported to install PI on hyper v.
Cisco may start this support on PI 2.1 ( but that is not confirmed yet )

  • LMS 4.1 (Windows) & NCS 1.1 (VM) Upgrade to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2

    Hi All,
Im getting a bit confused about the whole upgrade migration process for the following config to Cisco Prime Infrastructure:
    LMS - Version 4.1 , 500 devices. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1
    NCS – version 1.1 , 50 devices  Red Hat Linux ( 64 Bit)  (Installation software - NCS-VA-1.0.1.4-small.ova)
I want to be able to backup databases and migrate licensing from LMS and NCS to one platform. Does anyone have experience of this and could possible guide me thorugh this process. LMS has SAS and NCS has SAU.
Help will be very much appreciated!!

It's a couple of steps but can be done. You may want to reconsider getting off of LMS since the latest Prime Infrastructure (PI 1.2) does not have full feature compatibility with the latest LMS (4.2.3). Have a look here for the comparison.
If you still want to do it:
    1. Upgrade your NCS to PI 1.2 (instructions). If you're going with a total of 550 devices on a combined license you should use the medium ova file to get the correct server resource allocation. You will need to get the new license from the TAC or via the licensing portal. I'm not sure if you can get the PI license for your LMS upgrade directly via the portal but you do have the entitlement for LMS 4.2 and PI 1.2 (combined licenses not to exceed the original LMS number) if your SAS is current. You may need to contact the TAC and ask for the licensing team.
    2. Upgrade your LMS to 4.2 and patch it to 4.2.2 (instructions). Once you've done that, there is a simple menu command to export your device credentials to Prime (Admin, System, Export Data to PI in LMS and then Operation, Device Work Center, Bulk Import in PI - instruction on Page 18 here). Do that and then in the new PI installation import the devices.
Verify everything is working and you can decommission the LMS server.

  • Cisco Prime & Lms

    Hi,
    we have ordered following BOM...
i dont understand why it is required Cisco Prime Infrastructure & LMS 4.2 also...
what is diffence between them...or same..??

    L-PILMS42-50      Prime Infrastructure LMS 4.2 - 50 Device Base Lic          1
i want to implement it..from where n how to start
anybody have nice document to understand it n configuring it step by step...screen shots...searched on google but confused...pls help me or refer easy doc...

You'd get a lot more views for this question on the Network Management forum.
In any case, PI 1.2 (2.0 is the curent version) is the product Cisco is positioning for wireless (successor to WCS and NCS) and wired (successor to LMS) infrastructure management. However it hasn't yet reached feature parity with LMS so they are including licenses for customers to continue to use both if they so desire. The products are mutually exclusive and must be run on separate servers.
Please refer to the following pages for more info:
Whitepapers including PI-LMS functional comparison and PI Deployment Guide
LMS Design Guide (title says Prime Infrastructure but it's actually LMS)
LMS 4.1 (not just) for Dummies
Also search youtube for Cisco Prime. There is a series of VODs the product team did on use cases.

  • Cisco Prime Soft Appliance not saving changes to syslog.conf

    Greetings,
I'm having an issue with the syslog.conf file on a Cisco Prime LMS 4.2.4 soft appliance with a Solaris base.  My workplace uses local4 as the logging facility for its network devices, and according to a discussion I found on this site, I need to add the line:
    local4.info  /var/log/syslog_info
I have attempted this several times; we're approaching at least 5 attempts today.  I have attached text files created from putty logs where I've attempted to make the necessary change.  I appreciate any assistance the community can provide.
    Regards,
    Rob

    Hi, Afroz,
I really appreciate your assistance, but I'm afraid my hopes have been dashed.  The syslog.conf reverted to its original configuration.  I will go through my steps to be sure that I understood your suggestion properly.
I edited the syslog.conf to put all messages from local4 in /opt/CSCOpx/conf/syslog-entries.txt.  Then, I exited the shell to the console, issued the 'write mem' command, and closed the session.  Upon my reconnection, I found that my changes to the syslog.conf were not saved.
Did I make the correct edits in the correct places?  Another question, is this bug present in the versions of Prime LMS running Linux and/or Windows, or does it only exist in the soft appliance running Solaris?
    Regards,
    Rob
    Edit:
I'm reading the "Installation and Migration of Cisco Prime" PDF, and it gives me the impression that Cisco Prime is only supported as Windows, Solaris, and soft appliance installations.  Is that correct?  If it is correct, then installation of Cisco Prime LMS is not supported on other Linux distros such as Ubuntu Server, CentOS, Fedora, etc.?
    My thanks.

  • Cisco Prime DCNM 6.1(2) - Login to webinterface fails

Hi, we are having trouble logging into the webinterface of our DCNM installation.
    (Cisco Prime DCNM 6.1(2), Windows 2008 R2 SP1 64  bit version, US)
Everything seems to be working fine so far, except the login to the webinterface.
When  calling https://<SERVER_IP> (we're using 443 and 8443 in our  setup), the login page appears. Entering the credentials results in the  message "Authentication Failed. Please try again.". We tried that from a  remote machine and the server itself and are using local authentication (not RADIUS or LDAP, ...).

I have the same issue on a new install. I just deployed DCNM 7.0.2 from the OVA file downloaded directly from Cisco. I can ssh into the box using the root password set, but cannot log in to the web interface. I get the same Authentication Failed. Please try again.  message. I tried updating the password using appmgr add_user xmpp -u admin -p <password> but that didn't work either. I have just opened a TAC case to see what might be the issue.

  • Adding MSE from VMware to Cisco Prime

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to register MSE 7.4 on installed on VMWare to Cisco Prime running on version 2.1 but it seems like i'm getting this issue every time i do:
"No response from server. It may be unreachable, or server is down or HTTPS connection to server failed"
I'm sure that the IP address is correct
I'm sure that NCS username and NCS password is correct
I can ping MSE from MSE (hehe)
I can ping Cisco prime from MSE
I also tried to re install MSE on VM but i'm still getting the same error message.
How can this be fixed? thanks

Migrating Cisco WCS Licenses to Cisco Prime NCS Licenses
The Cisco Prime Network Control System uses a single-tier license model. When Cisco WCS BASE or WCS PLUS licenses are being migrated, licenses will be mapped to the new Cisco Prime NCS single-tier model, as shown in Figure 1. Customers are able to migrate their existing WCS licenses by purchasing the migration SKU (L-WCS-NCS1-M-K9) as also indicated.

  • WCS and LMS to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 Upgrade

    Hello,
Our customer is currently having WCS for 500 devices and LMS 3.2 for 1500 devices. We are planning to upgrade to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3.
I want to check is the upgrade procedure that we have planned is ok or we have missed something.
Phase 1: WCS to CPI 1.3 upgrade
    1. Check that WCS is at 7.0.230.0  version
    2. Export WCS database
    3. Install NCS 1.1.1.24 software
    4. Contact cisco to obtain trial license for NCS software (L-WCS-NCS1-M-K9 license).
    5. Migrate WCS license and import it in NCS software
    6. Migrate WCS data to NCS software using ncs migrate command
    7. Patch NCS software
    8. Inline upgrade to CPI 1.3 software
    9. Install proper licenses on CPI 1.3 (WCS and LMS device count)
My concern in this first phase is should I use NCS large image since our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 software should manage 2000 devices at the end.
Or is it better not to perform inline upgrade and insted go with exporting data from NCS and then importing them to CPI 1.3 that is going to be installed separately?
Phase 2: LMS 3.2 to CPI upgrade
    1. Export LMS 3.2 database
    2. Install LMS 4.2 software
    3. Install license to LMS 4.2
    4. Restore data from LMS 3.2 to LMS 4.2
    5. Direct upgrade from LMS 4.2 to 4.2.2
    6. Export the device list with credentials from LMS 4.2.2  and import it as a Bulk Import in CPI 1.3
At the end we will have CPI 1.3 and LMS 4.2.2 software running.
Is it possible to directly upgrade from LMS 4.2 to LMS 4.2.4 and then import data to CPI 1.3 or we need to go with 4.2.2 version?
    Regards,
    Jelena

Are this errors going to affect our LMS 4.2 operations?
Then we have upgraded to LMS 4.2.2 and exported data and credentiales for PI import.
On PI 1.3 we have installed WCS 500 devices upgrade license and LMS 1500 upgrade license and now we are having 2000 devices lifecycle license. We have successfully restored WCS data in PI and we have imported LMS devices as bulk import. What is strange is that we have this message in prime regarding licensing:
On LMS 3.2 our customer had saved unlimited number of configuration versioning. After upgrading to LMS 4.2 we can only see last 3 configurations regardless of unlimided number of configurations in previous LMS, so my question is where can we find older configurations in LMS 4.2?
We are planning to turn unlimited versioning on CPI 1.3 now, so our customer will again have feature that they need. Do you have some experiance regarding disk space when all device configurations are stored forever?
    Thank you for your help.
    Regards,
    Jelena

  • NCS & Cisco Prime LMS 4.X

    Hi,
We have got preinstalled Cisco prime NCS appliance, is ts possible if we can insall Cisco Prime LMS 4.X on the same appliance and upgrade the existing running LMS 3.X which is running on Windows server on the appliance or do we need seperate appliance for cisco prime LMS 4.x.

I am not sure if I understand you correctly but if you go for a physical appliance, NCS and LMS both needs their own dedicated appliances. Have a look here:
Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.1 Ordering and Licensing Guide
that's what is written in section " Ordering Information for New Customers" point 5.:
    5. Purchase the physical appliance if the desired deployment option is a physical appliance rather than a virtual appliance. Both Cisco Prime NCS and Cisco Prime LMS support the physical appliance deployment option. Each product requires its own dedicated physical appliance. Refer to Table 2.

  • Drawing network topology in Cisco Prime LMS 4.2

    Hi all:
I installed the Cisco Prime LMS 4.2 and managed to discover the Cisco devices and user devices like my PC stations.
Then I tried to draw the network topology from this LMS 4.2 and I found the topology under the Configuration and Monitor tab. By clicking to these two tabs, it appears a page of something like below:
    Topology Services
You can use Topology Services to:
    - View detailed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - Display the physical and logical services in your network
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    - xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
There is no action click on this page and it looks like an explanation page and cannot do anything.
May I know how to draw the networl topology by this Cisco Prime LMS 4.2?
Hope to hear the answer from anyone know about this soon. Many thanks!
    Warmest regards,
    tangsuan

    Hi Mantej:
Thanks to your link and I have downloaded the Prime LMS 4.2 document.
I then read and installed the JRE first in 64 bits because my Windows OS is 64bits but it still prompts out the Java installation screen. I then installed the JRE in 32 bits.
After that, it has no more Java installation screen. It then request for downloading file at the Windows top bar. I follow the request to riight click to allow the downloading. The Java running and downlaod the file.
After that, I cannot see any difference. Meaning I still cannot access anything for Toplology Services to draw my network topology diagram.
May I know what should be happen and what is the next step to do the topology drawing?
    Many thanks!
    Regards,
    tangsuan

  • Cisco Prime LMS 4.1, "License Server/Daemon Manager is down."

    Hello,
We having problem with Cisco Prime LMS running version 4.1.
When open Home page shows the next message: "License Server/Daemon Manager is down. Please check license.log for more information." (see attached)
The daemon server is stopped already and i can't restart it, see below:
    C:\>net start crmdmgtd
The Cisco Prime Daemon Manager service is starting.
The Cisco Prime Daemon Manager service could not be started.
The service did not report an error.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534.
    Thanks

It looks like you're seeing CSCte49301.  Follow the release note steps to solve this:
    Symptom:
The EssentialsDM daemon hangs in a Waiting to initialize state (as seen in the output of the pdshow command).  Additionally, one might see "Error connecting to JRM" in Resource Manager Essentials applications.
    Conditions:
This occurs on Windows servers after the patch for KB968930 is installed, and only if the Windows Remote Management service was started prior to starting CiscoWorks Daemon Manager.
    Workaround:
Shutdown CiscoWorks Daemon Manager with the following command from the server's command prompt:
    net stop crmdmgtd
    Delete the following two files:
    NMSROOT\MDC\tomcat\webapps\rme\WEB-INF\lib\ctmregistry
    NMSROOT\MDC\tomcat\webapps\rme\WEB-INF\lib\ctmregistry.backup
Restart CiscoWorks Daemon Manager with the following command:
    net start crmdmgtd
If that does not work, then the Windows Remote Management service must be stopped, and disabled.  Then, CiscoWorks Daemon Manager must be restarted.

  • Cisco Prime LMS device unreachable dont know why

    Hi
Currently running Cisco Prime LMS v4.2
I am trying to get some Nexus 7K Switches to work and become reachable.
They are running  kickstart: version 6.2(2)
                                 system:    version 6.2(2)
Now as far as I can see i have 2 identical switches but one is unreachable and the other is reachable.
When i use my snmp tester they both work with the correct V3 auth/priv passwords and the correct ssh
    works on the switches.
    When i go to monitor/Troubleshooting Tools/Troubleshooting Workflows
Then for the non working one  i get the following fails....
    Device Information   Device availability  x
    Collector Status
    Data Collection  Failure
    User Tracking    Failure
    Fault discovery   Failure
On the working one The above all are a Success.
    Also
    Reachability Details
Both ping and traceroute work fine on both switches
For the life of me I cannot see any difference in the configuration of the two devices.
Has anyone come across this before ?
I have attached a copy of the snmp config.
    Thanks
    Steve

What is the server OS? Windows/Linux or Unix?
From the server to ping and poll device for SNMP and see if both device works fine?
SNMP walk is available under :
    Windows : NMSROOT/objects/jt/bin
    Linux/unnix/: /opt/SCOpx/objects/jt/bin
    Example:
    NSROOT/objects/jt/bin/snmpwalk -v2c -c public <ip_add> <OID>
Try to configure the problematic device for SNMP v2 and try to add it from there and test if it works fine.
    -Thanks
    Vinod

  • Do we support Cisco Prime Infrastructure in Windows Platform?

Do we support Cisco Prime Infrastructure in Windows Platform?

PI 1.2 needs to run on either a Cisco physical appliance or VMware ESX/ESXi 4.1 or 5.0. It's RHEL-based under the covers.
Unlike LMS, you can't install it on a windows server, either physical or virtualized.
