Clean start Nokia N8

Hello,
I want to start clean with my Nokia N8 from Roger's (Canada).  I would still like to keep my contacts.  I do have a 32 GB microSD card.
it is unlocked.
What is the best way to start over?
Thanks,

  • How setup Clean Start

Under Resume on the Apple web page at http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html it talks about a Clean start. Lion lets you choose a clean start, so you return to a fresh desktop after you restart.
I have not been able to figure out how to set up the Clean start.  I went to System Preferences/General and uncheck the box to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. Unchecking the box does not give you a  clean start
What I would like to see is when you Shut down or do Restart all open apps are closed and the only items that load as part of the restart that are those specified under System Preferences/Users & Groups/Login Items.
I coud use some help setting up OS X 10.7 Lion for a Clean start

The box in the General System Preferences should work for what you want. It appears it is not being set.
I played around with it and it seemed to not set the preference every time, which may be what you are seeing.
First, open up your ~/Library/Preferencese/ByHost folder and delete the com.apple.loginwindow.<long alpha-numeric string>
Then, copy and paste this command into Terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.loginwindow TALLogoutSavesState 0
The file you deleted is the one that stores which apps and windows are open.
The command directly writes the preference for saving the logout state.
You can read the setting by using this command, although it should reflect the setting in the General System Prefs, now.
    defaults read com.apple.loginwindow
Look for the line with TALLogoutSavesState. It should be 0, now.
The checkbox in the shutdown dialog will remain checked, but you won't need to change it. It should ignore that since the main preference is set to not save state.

  • Cleanly "Starting Over" with the Desktop Software (non-BES)

    Hi there,
With the advances in the RIM Desktop Software, there have been many posts about the upgrade process resulting in less than functional situations. The process I recommend is to cleanly start completely over, cleaning all remnants of the Desktop Software from the PC, and perhaps even clearing the content databases from the BlackBerry SmartPhone (on the assumption that the Desktop Organizer app has complete and correct data).
To do this, I suggest the following steps (insert plenty of reboots of your PC...not just restarts, but full power down reboots). Also, it is advised that you be logged into the PC on an account with full admin rights. Further, under Vista/Win7, use the "Run As Administrator" option for everything that you can. Additionally, if you are truly concerned about your data, then you should first copy (for Outlook, to a PST) your contacts, calendar, memos, and tasks...just to be sure, in case of something catastrophic.
There are some reports that a Windows user profile (type 'echo %userprofile%' in the command prompt) that contains spaces might cause the installer to fail. In order to solve this issue, log out of your Windows account and log back in using the local Administrator account (or any other account name without spaces, but with full admin rights) and install the desktop (for all users).
    1) Remove any/all BlackBerry Device Software package(s) from your PC
Add/remove programs, Uninstall, etc. depending on your Windows OS level
    2) Cleanly uninstall the RIM Desktop Software:
KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software
Some have reported the manual search and removal of RIM, BB, and Puma registry keys to be helpful.
Do not attempt this if you are at all unsure -- editing your registry incorrectly can render your entire PC useless!
Others have reported the use of a registry cleansing tool to also be helpful
Still others have reported the use of your original PIM (e.g., Outlook, NOTES, etc.) installation CD, running the "repair" process, to be helpful in some situations
    3) Get a fresh download of the RIM Desktop Software:
    http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/
    4) Download (to your PC) a fresh copy of your BlackBerry Device Software package from your carrier -- it must be the version that your BlackBerry is already running (otherwise, the Desktop Software will attempt to change the version that is running on your BlackBerry):
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
KB23393 How to check the model number and version of installed BlackBerry device software on a BlackBerry smartphone
    5) Install the Desktop Software to your PC -- do not allow it to start
    6) Install (also to your PC), the BlackBerry Device Software package -- do not allow it to start the Desktop Software
If the package came from a carrier other than that for which your BlackBerry was originally manufactured, then after this install step completes, you must delete, from your PC, at least one copy, and possibly two, of VENDOR.XML.
One will for sure be here (or something quite similar, depending on your Windows OS):
    c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    The other might be here:
    c:\Users\<insert your user name>\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
    7) Start the Desktop Software and connect your BlackBerry to your PC (USB) when prompted.
    8) OPTIONAL -- if you truly want a clean start over AND you are 100% sure that the data in your PC Desktop Organizer (e.g., Outlook) is accurate, then, at this point, you can clear the BlackBerry of all Organizer data so that you can start over fresh, using your PC Organizer data as master:
KB10167 How to clear the user content databases from the BlackBerry smartphone
    9) Start the organizer configuration over:
KB03315 How to synchronize organizer data (calendar, task list, memo list, and contact list) using the BlackBerry Desktop Software
If you are using Outlook AND multiple profiles, be sure to click the "Configure" button, inside of the Configure screen for each organizer app...that is how you select the proper profile for EACH Organizer component you are configuring.
Hopefully that will get things going again.
Good luck and let us know!

I am having the same problem syncing aftre having downloaded the new Desktop Manager and have tried most things.  Seem ridiculous that this amount of time needs to be wasted just because BB releases a new version before it is ready.

  • How do I get a clean start for catalog to start all over again?

Running PSE5 on Win XP w/SP3
I have not been able to get any information about how to recover a catalog from files that have been copied as a backup, so it looks like I'm forced to start all over again.  There are about 17000 images in the C: drive.  The images all seem to be OK.  A few days ago there was a properly operating catalog file (and all the others) there, too.
Since then, I have tried to learn how to make the former catalog file operative, but no luck.  Since then, I have read that just uninstalling and reinstalling PSE5 will do nothing to give me a clean start - that is, all the old (now problematical) catalog file trouble will still be there.
To start all over again seems like such a waste of time, since I have copies of all the catalog files as they were properly operating in March, but it seems that something important is missing and none of this stuff is useful in any way.  I'm not the PSE5 user, so I didn't know about the external catalog backup that can be done from within PSE5 - so the possibility to use that technique does not exist.  All I have is a straight copy of everything in the Documents and Settings.. ...Application Data\Adobe folder.  I've tried replacing the whole Adobe folder with the backup files, starting PSE5 and looking at the catalog, but that didn't work either. I just get the same old empty catalog.
So, the 'start all over' option seems like the only way out.  Anyone who has lost the catalog knows how much work is in the catalog, so any help with either making the old catalog file work through reconstruction somehow, or starting all over again, will be very helpful.  Someday, I'd like to learn how this happened.  Until then I'll be backing up the catalog file from within PSE5 to an external location...  Everytime there's a new entry in the catalog information.  That method seems simple enough that even I could do it.
    Thanks,
    Al

I tried to open the resident 'My Catalog.psa' file.  PSE5 dutifully did that and the catalog information, such as tags and other information that would normally be present when looking at the Organizer is blank, as if nothing has ever been entered in the catalog.
The 'My Catalog.psa' file is about 600K (according to windows explorer) and resides in the 'Catalogs' folder.  Also there are:
    My Catalog-2.psa  about 3252K
    My Catalog-2.psa about 5380K
In the folder: 'Catalog Folders' were the folders:
    My Catalog
    My Catalog-1
In the folder My Catalog are the files:
      backupCt.dat  1K
      collstatus.dat  1K
      tagstatus.dat  1K
      thumb.5.cache  10K
In the folder My Catalog-1 is the file:
      tn.4.cache  32394 K
Above I say 'In the folder, Catalog Folders, were the folders My Catalog and My Catalog-1' because last night when shutting down, I didn't know what was in those folders.  I was too tired to check.
I did copy everything that was in the Adobe folder and all associated sub folders, including the folders above, to an SD flash card before I started to do anything else.  Becasue of this, I should be able to get back to the way it was before I started to do anything, then I opened the catalog file My Catalog-1.psa.  It said that it was made from an earlier version, asked to convert it and contained the 2002 to 2004 catalog information.  To the best of my knowledge, those photos were never entered in PSE5, and probably were from an earlier version of PS Album.
So, where is the information that was once in the PSE5 catalog?  Which files should contain that information?  Why can't the files simply be copied from the backup copies back on to the C:\ drive in the proper folders and then upon starting PSE5 see at least the catalog that was present when the copies of the files in the folders above were made?  What dumb mistakes could have been made to overwrite the information in the catalog and make the catalog appear empty?  If I don't learn this, I'll not be able to prevent it from happening again.
I'm not on the machine with the trouble at the moment, and since it is not my machine, I sometimes have trouble getting to it during normal waking hours.  I don't know the exact clicks and keystrokes that got the catalog from its normal function to appearing and functioning as if it is empty..
What exactly are the symptoms of "PSE5 doesn't like..."?  The catalog appears and functions as if it is empty - as if nothing ever has been or ever was entered into it.  PSE5 Organizer is operating normally as far as I can tell.  I cannot seem to locate the former catalog information and it has not loaded the former catalog file information.  A new test catalog was made and it opens and shows the thumbnails of its four images.  I hope that the test catalog I made didn't overwrite anything that would prevent going back to the original catalog information.  The copies of the files can be restored as they were a few months ago, though, because there is a copy of them on an SD card.
    Thanks,
    Al

Purchase Adobe Acrobat XI, had to wipe hard drive clean & start over, need to reload it..Can u Help ?

    Hi greg v.p44270855,
We would love to help. What part are you having trouble with? For starters, please make sure that you're logged in as an administrator, and temporarily disable any antivirus software. If you don't have the Acrobat installer, you can download Acrobat from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.
If you're running into a particular problem with the installation, please provide some specifics about the problem (error messages, operating system and version, and so so).

  • Clean start?  New HDD & New OS

Can I replace the disk drive with a larger one and update the OS at the same time? I really have no interest in maintaining OS9 or any of the data files. If possible, I would prefer to start clean with the new disk. I think OS X 10.3 will work (ram is already 512MB). What OS package should I purchase for a totally clean installation?
I've seen many posts addressing these upgrades separately, but I would like to do them together.
    Thanks.

I am running Tiger on an iMac 600. I turned off dashboard. Tiger requires a minimum of 255meg. Twice that should be OK, if you don't run memory hungry applications. You can always add more later. Of course, more memory is always better.
How to upgrade slot loading iMacs
You need to get the 3 and a 1/2 inch ATA harddrive. They are also known as parallel ATA or PATA. The iMac was designed to take a maximum drive size of 128gig. The 120gig drives are the largest readily available.
    Check out this site Installation
iMac HDD Upgrade Guide (Slot-Loading) Visual Installation Guide - slot loading iMac Hard Drive Visual Installation Guide
Just after powering on your machine, insert the X cd. Without a bootable harddrive in your machine, the mac should eventually boot from the cd. If not, power off your machine then hold down the c key then poweron your machine.

  • New Laptop, clean start, except iTunes librarys, what news for iPhone?!

    Hi,
I have a new MacBook Pro coming my way (very excited) a nice upgrade from my 3YO work horse iBook!
So, i want to start again, with regards to a 'clean' install. But i want to keep a couple of things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries.
    A couple of questions then.
    1) The first is actually pre-move over. In that i use 2 iTunes libraries, 1 for my laptop (with small number of songs) and one with an external drive (for all my music). I have only plugged my iPhone onto my laptop one. What happens if i plug into the other one by mistake?
    2) When i move laptops, i know i need to copy the library folders from the music folder, to the new music folder, and also copy across the pref file. But what should i do about the iPhone? Will it be as seamless?
    3) Any other tips and ideas to make my move as painless as possible!
    Thanks
    JJ

You need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes. You also need to de-authorize your computer that is going back with your iTunes account with iTunes.
iTunes does not store photos. iTunes stores iTunes content only - music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and 3rd party apps, and serves as the sync/transfer content for iTunes content - contacts, calendar events and Safari bookmarks with the supported applications on your computer, and for photos stored on your computer.
You need to transfer all photos from your work computer to your new computer as with all other data that you will need or want to transfer to your new computer.
The easiest way to transfer your entire iTunes library including playlists, play counts, etc. is be transferring the iTunes named folder located in your Music folder from your work computer to your new computer. If you have access to an external drive with enough storage capacity to store your entire iTunes library or iTunes folder, you can use that for the transfer, or you can network the computers together in some fashion. With iTunes quit on your new computer, place the iTunes named folder copied from the Music folder on your old computer in the Music folder on the new computer. Launch iTunes on the new computer and it will be identical to iTunes on your work computer.

  • Problem with starting nokia X6

Problem in ignition Nokia X6 screen turns white and blue letters and is nokia until the battery is removed! When the burst is all normal!
    Ante Milina

If you want to switch the phone on and backup your data before trying jimmy's reset idea then try the following:
    - Switch phone off (or pull battery out and put back in).
    - plug in the phone charger, as soon as the screen lights up pull the charger pin out of the phone.
    - when the screen goes black switch on the phone.
    - plug the charger back into the phone when you feel the start-up vibration.
    - phone should start instead of hang on the white Nokia logo screen.

  • E71 not starting nokia messaging but mailbox setup...

I've recently reset my phone to factory settings (everything - code *#7370#), and the first next thing I did is reinstall nokia messaging by visiting email.nokia.com through my mobile web browser, only to find that starting the pink "@" Email or Email setup wizard, i get plain old email mailbox/account setup wizard for regular built-in mailbox.
I've managed to install everything successfully just a couple of days earlier, when the phone was v300, and now after updating to v400 everything just fails.
    Please help

    Thank you
But i think Nokia Messaging bad installed because i have not this set. I have only "intervalle connexion" 6h, 4h, 2h 1h and 30min.
Often i had the possibility to modify this setting but here, it is different. ??????
I have the sensation to have the simple version of the e-mail of Nokia.
It is bizarre but in Menu, Installations, i have 2 icons @.
one icon @ Config.Mess and one icon @ Email.
When i press on the first one, i have access to the creation for a new adress mail.
When i press on @ Email, there is nothing.
    there is a problem, no?

  • Clean start - How?

I am about to remove 1.4
I have found that for some reason I have a number of .lrcat files on the drive, taking up some considerable amount of space. My master photos' are all safe on a drive.
Can I just delete the .lrcat files and the associated folders from the HDD and start again by regenerating from the originals.
What are the dangers of doing this?
Are there any other files I should be deleting, such as backups somewhere?
    Regards Kevin
    Running 2.1 on a PC

The biggest users of space are, in order: The images; the Previews folder; the .lrcat file.
If you have everything on an external, you can delete all of these, but I'd double check to make sure everything is where you think. IE, that your external images don't have their catalog and previews on your internal.
With many .lrcat files, probably many are backups. You need only the most recent.

  • Migrating to new MB Air with a clean start?  Limited space...

I'm coming from a 15" MB Pro with a 320GB drive going to a 256GB MBA 13". Obviously a full migration is too large. I started out thinking that I would simply install all of the apps from scratch (purging in the process)...so I started this...reinstalling, getting my Dropbox, Evernote, etc. running. The cloud based apps like that are no problem - as is email. Where I'm struggling is on native apps (things like Bento, Concentrate, etc) whose data location isn't crystal clear to me. What folders do I need to bring over to get everything transferred? Is this something I should do through Migration Assistant, or just pull them on my NAS and copy them back over to the MBA?
    Thanks

One problem with reinstalling your apps usually is, you miss a lot of the simple ones that you downloaded, or have lost the discs for.
Your best bet might have been to use +Setup Assistant+ when your new Mac first started up, but omit some things. You can still do that, if you wish, by starting over. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum), especially the green box there. Let it transfer your apps and all user home folders, but de-select one or more large sub-folders, such as Pictures, Music, Movies, or wherever your big data folders are.
You can then delete some apps and data you don't want, and selectively copy other data that you do want.
Neither +Setup Assistant+ nor +Migration Assistant+ allow you to "pick and choose" individual apps, and they have the same limits on what you can omit. And they don't automatically move the data associated with your apps.
