Clearing up space in internal hard drive

So my macbook has been notifying me that my hard drive is full. So I bought a Passport 1T external hard drive. I had Time Machine do a back up on it already. So now can I delete things in my internal hard drive to make space on it. Will my backed up data in the external hard drive be safe and I will be able to retrieve it? I'm not a computer person so I see the external hard drive like a USB.

Files only in a Time Machine backup on that drive may be deleted if it runs out of space, and the drive can fail at any time. Put your documents on a second external drive and set Time Machine to back it up as well.

    1. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/.Trash
    2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu. An Info dialog should open.
    3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
    4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
    5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
    6. Close the Info window and test.

That is hard to say, as we do not know what you keep on your hard drive.
    To free space
empty the trash, both on your Desktop and the Aperture Trash,
Delete files and folders you do not need
Move files to an external volume.
There are utilities that let you find large files, like Omni Disk Sweeper, but that is not a free application.

  • How to free up space on internal hard drive

How do I free up space on my internal hard disc?
I have only about 40 gig of information on my macbook however it says I don't have space while I'm working on photoshop. I have deleted a lot of files on my mac that are already saved in my external hard disc but when I check my memory it says I have  only 1.3gig space available out of a 120gig memory. This data is distributed between audio, apps, movies, pictures and other. I don't understand what 'other' is and it says I have about 76gig worth of data in the other part. Please I would need help on how to delete files from this 'other'. Cheers!

All Mac operating systems use any free space on your hard drive as virtual memory, and this virtual memory plays a part in how well your computer performs. Because of this, the more data you have on your hard drive, the less virtual memory becomes available. Therefore, in order to help increase your Mac boot time, and keep your computer running smoothly, periodically cleaning your hard drive is necessary. To clean it up you want to get rid of any old or unnecessary files. You can do this manually by removing unused applications, emptying your trash etc.,

how do I clear up space on my hard drive

First, you need to have a back-up of your hard drive before deleting files. Use a utility such as "Disk Inventory X" to see where your largest files are located. Then, and back-up before, you can begin to delete them. There are also some other good utilities that others can recommend to get an idea of what's hogging your hard drive space... I'll let others chime in on their particular favorites.
    Good luck,

  • Lost 14 gig of space on internal hard drive after backing up photos to dvd's

good Morning, I'm running pse 6 and yesterday I did a full back up of my pics which is about 14 gig onto dvd's.  This morning when I checked my free space available on my hard drive I was missing about 14 gig.  I normally only have about 20 gig of free space left on my hard drive so I can't afford to lose 14 gig.  Did backing up my pics on dvds also eat 14 gig of space on my hard drive?  Help!
    Bill III

well probably you have told PSE to back up your entire hard disk , first check out the disk space usage and all by downloading any disk space usage analysis software..probably that will give you some help.

  • Low on space on internal hard drive

Hello - I hope this is the correct forum to post to. My iMac G5 came w/the standard 80GB (74.41GB) hard drive. It is now down to only 3.87GB of free space. All of my video media is on my external Lacie Drive, but since I have such little space left on the computer, I'm not able to use my system to burn videos, etc... I have tried clearing out all of the unnecessary Applications and files that I'm not using, and emptied the Trash and that doesn't seem to free up much space. I did download Onyx but am unsure as to if/how that might clear up space - would anyone recommend this? Also, short of buying more RAM (I have 1GB of RAM), might there be any suggestions as to how I can free up more space? Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Hi Kristina: I just checked my HD to find "log" files. They are located in your User Folder > Library > Logs. Mine are under 1mB, which I believe would be about the norm. They also show up within WhatSize. I checked the Onyx program and below is what it says about its function:
"OnyX is a maintenance, optimization and personalization utility for Mac OS X (PowerPC and Intel). It also makes it possible to configure some hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Dashboard, Exposé, Safari, Login window and of some of Apple's own applications, to remove some files and folders that may become cumbersome, to preview various logs and CrashReporter-reports, and more."

  • How can I find out how much free space on my hard drive?

I recently upgraded to Lion but still a newbie to Mac OS X.  I need to be able to check available space on internal hard drive.

    Hi ...
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
You'll see Capacity and Available from the Get Info panel.

  • Internal Hard Drive Free Space Issue

    Hey,
I recently upgraded my 17" MacBook Pro from Tiger to Snow Leopard but the upgrade seems to have created a number of problems, the most notable being the lack of free space now available on my internal hard drive.
I also had to install a trial version of Aperture 3.0.3 in order to access my aperture library as the older version of Aperture is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
At this point the free space available on my internal hard drive was 36GB and my aperture library was 39GB. I had to uninstall Photoshop Elements 9 in order to create enough free space to open this library.
I bought an external hard drive and after some organising (importing and exporting to and from external hard drive), I eventually moved all photo files/folders, projects and libraries onto this external drive, leaving only one in-progress project (about 3GB) left on the internal volume.
I also exported my iTunes library and any other files to this external drive.
    All trashes have been emptied.
The problem is that, despite all this clear-out, I now only have 2GB of free space on the internal hard drive.
I ran Disk Inventory X and it shows that my home folder is using 155GB of space, which seems ridiculous considering there is in effect nothing left on my laptop save for the application programs and the one remaining project.
I have manually checked through this folder and all its subfolders and have found nothing that would accumulate to this amount of space.
I have repaired an issue with the internal volume, but it is now showing a “minor” problem with the volume header.
If someone can provide and explanation/solution to this I would be very grateful as it is severely slowing my workflow at the moment.
    Thanks

    Baresi:
I suggest that you begin with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
I recommend that you make sure that you make a bootable clone of your entire volume using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
You should also seriously consider installing a larger capacity drive.

  • I'm running Final Cut Express 2. How can I move entire project and application from one internal hard drive to another? Ran out of space on one drive. Thanks.

I'm running Final Cut Express 2. My video project is 95% done and I've run out of space on my 500g internal hard drive. How can I (1) move the complete FCE program and video to my unused 250g internal hard drive and operate it from there and (2) how do I then purge all the FCE info from the 500g drive without losing anything from the 250 drive?
Also, is it possible to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 when the project is finished? If so, how? I now know this all should have been done before I started. Thanks for the help.

    1. You can't move the application. It must remain on the system drive. Move your capture scratch folder to the external FireWire drive and use the reconnect function in the project.
    2. What's the media 16:9 or 4:3?

I move folders from my internal hard drive twice to an external hard drive.  Now I believe Lr does not know how to find my photos.  What can I do to get this cleared up.

Jim has a very good suggestion. There are many factors at work here:
    1) How are you connecting the external drive to the computer?
    2) How big are files (329 x 1MB is not the same as 329 x 25MB)?
    3) What is your computer specification?
    4) Do you have any power saving settings on (in particular something that would send the computer/hard drives to sleep)?

  • Making space on my internal hard drive.

I have already been using Time Machine to back up everything on my Imac using an external hard drive.
I have now purchased a second 1TB hard drive that I want to use to back up only my photos on Iphoto & film on iMovie.
The intention is then to delete them from my internal hard drive to create more space.
Can I use Time Machine for this 2nd hard drive as well, ie. to selectively copy files (photos & movies).
If not - what's the easiest way to move photos & movies from iLife to a second hard drive?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Can anyone give step-by-step instructions for moving my iPhoto library to my external hard drive to free up space on my internal hard drive?

I want to move my iPhoto from my internal hard drive to an external hard drive to free up space. Can it be moved entirely and function the same as before with all features and the software itself on the hard drive?  Also, can anyone give step by step instructions on how to do this?  I'm having a difficult time figuring this out on my own by trying to search through Apple support.

Your system will likely fit just fine on a small fast 250GB SSD
What you have is lots of stuff that should not be on the boot drive, data and graphics or media files and libraries that should be moved to another drive.
If you are getting a message like this, STOP, off load files, make room, and make sure to have 15% free or more.
Do not try to move anything from system and its library and sub folders. Move your home user account and just leave the essential home library but move all the rest.
A full drive can have trouble finding free space segments and writing out updates to files and to the directory. And loss of directory means loss of where files are located and their segments.

  • I needed space on my hard drive and  it was suggested to clear the cache by restarting with shift held down.  My Aperture library is now missing...help please!

I needed space on my hard drive (iMac- as I do photography part time, and it was suggested to clear the cache by restarting and holding down the shift key.  Now most of my Aperture Library is missing and I had senior photos on there for friends....help please.
I heard that Aperture makes alias files when you are editing and that might be what is clogging up my hard drive.  I really don't know.

There is nothing that SHIFT reboot does to erase files. Have you restarted normally? It's quite possible that with a full drive you can't start nor can Aperture load its library file.
I don't know who gave you that advice but it's not a viable solution for a full drive:
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
