Clipping strokes to shape
Can anyone tell me how (or if it's even possible) to clip (not mask) strokes to a given geometry...without flattening or expaning the strokes so they become fills?
Hopefully the image below illustrates the problem I'm having with simply using a clipping mask. I hope to be able to quickly trim all the strokes to the edge of the pear shape in order to show the tapered ends of the art brush which are hidden by the mask. In other words, I want end points at the edge of the pear shape (art brush would be applied afterwards in that case).
Thanks for any help.
As already mentioned above, Illustrator currently does not have the down-to-earth Trim functionality Tim is looking for. Unfortunately.
The downer that comes along with the Outline Pathfinder is that the more complex the involved objects are, the more tedious it is to clean up the drawing afterwards.
So, at least in conjunction with straight lines there is another and a bit easier way you might want to try. Here you've got two objects which are part of my rock-the-cote collection volume 3. Two compound paths above a crowd of horizontal lines that are part of group "Lines".
- Select the strokes and give them a black fill
- Draw a filled rectangle above the whole thing, leave it selected, add Compound P1 and Compound P2 to that selection and create a compound path out of them (Compound 3)
- Select all and click either the Trim or Merge button in the Pathfinder Palette
- Direct select one of the filled objects, go to Select > Same > Fill Colour and delete the selection
Now you've got a bunch of 0 Pt strokes plus a bunch of needless unfilled and unstroked paths. You delete this needless stuff by going to Object > Path > Clean up. Then apply the desired stroke attributes like 1 Pt and black or any brush stroke.

Can't remove stroke from shape CS6 Mac
Hi, I've not run into this before, but haven't used Pshop CS 6 a lot.
I am setting the stroke to 0 and none, but Pshop keeps putting a stroke around the shape:
http://screencast.com/t/J7sgWJpF
Not sure what is wrong or how to fix it.
Thanks
JeffTo me that looks like the path instead of a stroke.

After you add the shape and press the enter/return key or if you switch to a different tool such as the Hand Tool does the stroke go away? -
How to create Clipping Masks with Shapes and Text?
Hi there! I am new to Illustrator and am currently attempting to learn it. I am creating a logo that has text and has a shape that goes through the text to make the text appear as if it has claw marks in it.
I have two layers. The layer with the shape "claw" marks, and a layer with the text. The shape layer is currently above and the text layer is currently below. If I select both layers and click on Make Clipping Mask it has the text displayed within the little claw marks, how do I reverse that? Because when I try to change the order of the layers it doesn't clip anything?
Thank you so much!
AaronHi Monika,
Sorry for taking so long to reply... This is what I am trying to accomplish. I tried following your directions above, but that only made the text invisible and I tried moving the claw layers above and below the text... and it only appeared as if the claws per se were filling up with the text color.
Here is what I am trying to accomplish: -
Stroke around shape won't align to center!?
When increasing the width of a stroke around a shape the stroke is not centered... WHY DOES IT DO THIS??? Even if I use the controls in the stroke window to change this it sill plays up. This has always happened randomly over the years but I have never figured out how to fix it. Please help!
Also, check your stroke palette. Your stroke may be set to align to outside(see 3 icons after align stroke below).

Adding stroke changes shape, why???
I'm trying to add a strock to a shape, and when I do it shifts the shape down and to the left, and moves some of its anchor points.
I can't figure out why this is happening or how to stop it. Has anyone here experienced this? Its unchecked and the behaviour persists. Here is what it looks like:
Notice how some anchors points are the same (like in the curve of the thumb), while others are not (like the bottom right buldge on the palm).
The pixel grid idea makes sense, but the deselecting it does change the resutls. -
Shape layers - gradient across stroke?
Is it possible to get this type of graident stroke with shape layers?
It's Illustrator CS6's new "gradient across stroke" option.Think of the Gradient Stroke in AE as a gradient on a comp sized solid with a stroke as a mask. It's completely different than Illustrator's gradient stroke. The path in Illustrator becomes the path for the gradient.
If you're using just a single instance of your Illustrator path in AE you can just bring in Illustrator artwork. If you want to use shape animators there may be a workaround. You can tie the position scale and rotation property of duplicated layers to the controls in the shape layer repeater function. You just have to duplicate the layer as many times as needed. The expression is a little tricky for me to create outside AE from my head.
If you want to use trim paths then back in AI, duplicate your gradient stroked illustrator layer, put the duplicate on a separate layer and change the stroke to a solid color. Open the .ai file in AE as a comp, convert the duplicate stroke layer to a shape, apply trim paths to the shape, then use the shape as a track matte for your gradient stroke.
If you need to use one of the other shape layer animators let us know. There may be a workaround. -
3D Shape Layer Stroke Animation
Hi, I have created a 3D shape layer with a circle to animate a stroke on it. Now the shape layer comes with a stroke already, which has no start / end point to animate though, so I *** effects / generate / stroke ... now thing is I only see the stroke the shape layer comes with, but not the effect / stroke yet ... how do I get my animate able stroke turned on ? Just turning off the 1st stroke doesn’t help.
Any hint appreciated.

Another question, is there a way to define the normal of a path in AE so that the stroke is rotated on the path itself, I want to use it stand up rather than lay flat ...
This is not possible, but it is possible with plug-ins or with multiple copies of a stroked layer offset by no more than one pixel in Z using an expression. The camera would have to move to the top and look down on the extrusion.
Using Free Form, now included with AE. Animate a stroke on a layer, then use the mesh controls to bend the layer in a semi circle. A spotlight and some ambient light sell the 3D and AE's camera interact perfectly with the shape.
Another option is Particular. You can use a light as an emitter and then fly the light around the path streaming particles that create the line.
Another option is CC Cylinder, but it will take a bit of trickery through expressions to integrate camera movement and the other 3D objects.
Still another option is Canoa, or Borris FX and their cylinder tools. They integrate with AE's 3D camera. The only option that isn't viable is just using a shape layer or a stroke on a solid. -

Including the new way in which clipping paths works!.. I
believe the
method of creating a clipping path may still be the same
however the BIG
difference now is that at the very least alignment uses the
clipping
path and not the contents!!! a good step in the right
direction.. I'm
still not sure whether the clipping contents outside the path
remain
visible or not.. as per previous versions.. but it will be
interesting
to see what it's like once it starts to ship and people get
their hands
on it.
Incidentally I used Freehand from version 3 on a PC to MX but
our studio
got fed up with Freehands bad color fidelity for printing
comps - it
worked fine for output of fairly simple spot colour jobs but
full colour
stuff was getting difficult to manage. I didn't cross over
lightly - I
used AIv10 in the background sometimes duplicating jobs in AI
from
Freehand in my spare time to see how it worked. While I loved
the tools
in Freehand - pen tool, Find and replace, paste inside etc..
better
colour fidelity and integration with InDesign and Photoshop
and more
reliability for output were more crucial to us than the
tools. That's
just me/us.
But at the end of the day it looks like AICS3 is giving us at
least some
of what we've been asking for.
I hope this has been of some help.

Yes the contents are still visable.
AI cs3 does have a new quick mask type feature. It only works
on placed images and not vector artwork. When you place a Photo
there is a button that appears in the top menu bar called "MASK"
..ooo haha.
So in one step you can set your photo in a clipping mask
"square" shape only. It creats a path that is the exact size of the
image you have placed. From there you can resize the path to crop
the image as needed. the menu bar also shows more options like
adding a stroke etc. -
I have a GeneralPath that I draw with two different BasicStrokes.
The two strokes are (intended to be) identical except that one is
dashed.
What I'm observing is that in some cases the two stroked outlines
do not overlap, as I'd expect them to. Are my expectations incorrect?
I'm including a simple program that demonstrates the problem.
You can find a (blown up) screen capture here:

PS CS3
I have a path created with the pen tool. I then want to stroke the path. But there is no option to do this. Its highlighted out.
In my path palette the layer is oddly showing as - shape 1 vector mask.
Any ideas what i am doing wrong?.You're using the shape option of the pen tool to draw a vector shape. You can stroke the shape using layer styles.
What you want is to create a path, so make sure the draw path option is selected in the pen tool options:

Bitmaps vs. Vector Shapes
So I'm making a site(duh). And I have read multiple times
that a vector shape has all the advantages. Their sizeable, and
faster loading and just gerenerally better for web design. I have
read that alot. Did I really read that? Are Vector Shapes really
better than bitmaps coming from PS? Why then did I trace all my
imported bitmap images and my site can barely run? The tortis would
surely win in this race. This makes no sence to me. Thanks for your
time and consideration.
Peace and Love,
Mike.Shapes created in CS6 with a fill should work in CS5.
But there is no way to make them 100% compatible because CS6 has features that CS5 did not.
And CS5 will not be able to show the strokes on shapes.
The message in CS5 is because the file contains data that CS5 can't understand -- no, there is no way to avoid that, because it's telling you something important. -
Cutting a gradient stroke in CS6
Is it possible to cut or erase part of a gradient stroke? The attached image shows a. the stroke I need to cut and b. the stroke as I would like it to appear - (at the moment I have just covered it(b) with white fill. I have tried Epanding, Outlining path and Flattening, but with no luck. Thanks in advance.
Jacob,

create shape to “cut” line ( I am showing black for example)
select all objects & minus Front
Also tried Divide won’t ungroup
Usually when you Minus front or Divide you would see the anchor points of the shape and intersecton of line would be visible.. but thy are not... -
I have a halftone gradient that I used to create color inside an image. I belive I need to make the clipped area into shapes so the screen printer can use it. Is this even possible?
Thanks

How to add moving shapes over video?
Hi,
I am making a short video that explains how to use some software for my job. I want to make a red rectangle appear around a particular item to highlight it (such as the mouse pointer) and be able to follow the motion of the item. I saw in the Boris documentation there was reference made to vector shapes, but I could not figure out where to create them. How can I create simple shapes that can move around and dynamically change size? Thanks.
Message was edited by: mbmasuda
Sorry, I forgot to say I am using Final Cut Express HD 3.5.The only way you can do it within FCE is by using motion keyframes. Create the shape in Photoshop, making sure it confirms to your video settings. You may also be able to create the shape within FCE by using a combination of Color (from Video Generators>Matte) and applying Mask Shape to it.
Set the shape on the video track above your clip (ie clip on V1, shape on V2). Click on the shape to open the motion controls in the Canvas (make sure Image + Wireframe is selected in Canvas). Now use the Motion contorl tab in the Viewer or the Motion handles in the Canvas to move the shape, setting Keyframes to animate the motion -
I have all my clips with an extra edge around the top and bottom I want to remove
As you can see from the image below, I have all my source videos recorded at 1024x820. I want to, using Premiere clip this to 1024x768 removing some from both the top and bottom. I'll have hundreds of clips of this shape (1024x820) I will import into premiere. Is there some kind of transformation I can do that will clip the top and bottom so that my exports come out at 1024x768? I don't want to shrink the full picture, I want to clip the top and bottom edges cleanly.
All I am doing is the following:
import my mov file that is 1024 x 820
create a sequence that is 1024 x 768
export the sequence
I made a video showing the steps (very boring, sorry).
I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing. i'm 99% sure my result is wrong from the looks of it in the movie player.
