Clone from Powermac To Imac?
We have a Dual G5 which has been our main computer. All email, most applications on it, etc. We also have a 20" imac that we bought for the kids, but they keep wanting to use the powermac. I actually love the Imac and would not mind using it for my main computer. The problem is I have a lot of applications and unfinished projects on the PM. Is it possible to take complete clones of each computer, which I have on external drives, and clone them back to the other computer? Switch identities without having to go through all the installs and reactivations? Does anyone have any experience doing this or have any thoughts on possible problems?
Thanks
Glenn
Thanks Rich, I thought that was going to be the answer. What about just applications? I know some can just be copied over but others such as Quarkexpress require online activation and can't be installed on two computers. I don't want or need them on two computers just a different one than they are now on.

Migrated from PowerMac to iMac but iTunes library did not come over
How do I get my iTunes Library over from my PowerMac to my iMac?
Is it only the iTunes library that didn't transfer? It is possible that it transferred but into a new account.
When you run a migration it will transfer even the user accounts.
So go to menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and check how many accounts you have there. If you only have the one (your current one) then you can run the transfer again, or just transfer the Music library with FireWire, ethernet or airport (or a USB stick etc)
If there is another account there, then logout of the one you are in, and login to the other account to see if things are as they should be

Trying to connect my iMac to on 10.8.2 with PowerBook Intel on 10.5.8; sharing works from PowerBook to iMac but not the other way around. Why?
Thanks for the interest. Preferences are similar on both machines: screen sharing, file sharing, printer sharing & scanner sharing all ticked and radio button for Screen Sharing is ON.
My confusion is that I can get a network connection to the iMac by selecting "go to server" on the PowerMac running 10.5.8 but am unable to make the iMac connect to the PowerMac using similar selections. When ethernet cable is plugged in the PowerMac shows up on the finder bar on the iMac, but it does not allow either screen sharing or connection to occur - a dialog box tells me to check System Prefs and Network connection.
I'm hoping to export a large file of photos from iPhoto on my iMac to my wife's PowerMac and hoped to achieve this with an ethernet network connection. -
I want to transfer my entire iTunes "folder" from a newer iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 machine running iTunes 10.7 to an older iMac running OSx 10.5.8. How best to do this and keep all my data, tags and covers in tact?
Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it. -
What is the fastest way to transfer files and applications from an older iMac to a new MacBook Pro?
I have a Firewire cable and Thunderbolt adapter, but no icons showing either Mac appear on either desktop. The fastest way is to use Carbon Copy Cloner and a external drive formatted GUID OS X Ext. J in Disk Utlilty, then connecting to the new Mac and using Migration Assistant in the Utilites folder.
Even faster, if you can determine your going to replace all the apps from fresh sources anyway (like if the older Mac's OS X verison is old thus the apps) then just use a external drive and copy just your files to it, then connect to the new Mac and transfer over.
Some apps you can just grab the registration code and install it fresh on the new machine with the old code, talk to the developer about transfering the program, as long as it's deleted on the older Mac in the process.
It used to be Firewire Target disk mode was fastest, but since Thunderbolt came out...
Notice this support doc hasn't been updated since june 2012, no Thunderbolt info

How do I transfer my applications from a 2010 iMac to a new 2013 iMac that has a Fusion Drive?
What is the best way to transfer my Applications from a 2010 iMac to a 2013 iMac that has a Fusion Drive. I am particularly concerned about losing all my old mail. My documents have already been transferred.
The best way is to make a backup of your old iMac. Do this either by cloning to an external hard drive through SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. OR Use Time Machine.
Then set up your new iMac using either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.

I have the iPhone 4. I recently switched from PC to IMac. I am trying to sync my iPhone, but iTunes will not let me add or remove anything. Do I need to change a setting since I changed computers? I try to add songs from my music into my phone section and it will not go... Plus the playlists on my phone are not updated on my iTunes phone on my computer. Its like it never updated. What am I doing wrong??
Iphone will sync with one computer at a time.
When you sync to another it will delete the current content.
Make sure you have copied everything from your old computer to your new one first. -
How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.
You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable. If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it. Time Machine can access it either way.

Receiving errors trying to run adpatch after a clone from production.

O have try executed solution in note 1237003.1. with no luck.
The run of adrelink.sh force=y "ad" finished with status 0. I've also tried running the adadmin utility and chose to relink all products. But adpatch also fails with same error. At this point the only thing I can think of is to have a UNIX admin install AIX 6.1 on the dev server and see if the clone has issues and see if adpatch fails. Is there any other relink or script I can run or need to run to help this particular situation out? OR is cloning from an AIX 6.1 unix environment to an AIX 5.3 environment just not compatible with oracle E-Business Suites?
Thanks in advanceThe run of adrelink.sh force=y "ad" finished with status 0. I've also tried running the adadmin utility and chose to relink all products. But adpatch also fails with same error. Have you tried to relink adpatch only and see if this helps (I understand you did for all AD executable files) -- Also, please check the adpatch timestamp to verify.
OR is cloning from an AIX 6.1 unix environment to an AIX 5.3 environment just not compatible with oracle E-Business Suites? This is not supported -- See (FAQ: Cloning Oracle Applications Release 11i [ID 216664.1], 13. Can I clone from one operating system version to another?).

Managing multiple iOS devices on different Apple accounts from the same iMac
May be a very simple question to answer, but can I manage multiple iOS devices on different Apple accounts from the same iMac?
I ask as whilst I'm totally Mac'd, my partner who has her own Apple account has a Winows laptop and experiences problems updating iOS software on her iPhone 4S and iPad 3 Gen via the laptop. I'm thinking the problems may be overcome if we manage her iOS devices through my iMac.Thanks dwb .... I thought there'd be a catch .... not to keen on all that media and apps on my iMac!
The specific problem is that whenever she updates to the latsest version of iOS using the latest iTunes for Windows on her PC laptop she seems to lose something in the process. One time she lost all her texts and the other day when updating to 5.1.1 she lost all her reminders. Not the end of the world but frustrating and shouldn't really happen and doesn't happen to me using the iMac and OSX. -

How do I get a new iMac to inherit Time Machine backups from my old iMac?
After successfully migrating from my old iMac to my new iMac, I connected my Time Machine drive (containing the backup files from my old iMac). Following the instructions from my Apple Genius Desk guru, I opened System Preference>Time Machine and selected the Time Machine drive to be my designated Time Machine for my new iMac. I was presented with a dialog asking if I wanted to "Inherit the backup files that existed on the drive" (or words to that effect). I selected "Yes". I was told that this would create a continuous backup record, so that I would be able, using the "Enter Time Machine" command, to access all the backups going forward for my new iMac, but also all the files from my previous iMac, in a "seamless" chain of backups. However, it didn't work out as I expected. Looking in the Finder at the contents of my Time Machine drive, I saw that both the current and the prior backup files appeared to be there, all inside one folder, as I expected. But using the "Enter Time Machine" command from the Time Machine drop-down menu I could not go back any further than the moment of migration to the new iMac. On the upside, it seems like I will be able to recover old backup files using the Finder, but, on the downside it appears that I will NOT be able to use "Enter Time Machine" to return to search the backup files from my old iMac, in a "seamless" fashion as I had expected. Did I miss something??? Or is this just the way it is???
Without knowing what you have tried please open System Preferences - Sharing - File Sharing and select File Sharing. If you still have trouble you can call AppleCare in the morning when they re-open. You have 90 days of telephone support if you haven't already bought AppleCare.

How to move Startup Disk clone from one external drive to another?
I thought this would be a question easily answered on the WWW and easily found via search engines, but so far no luck, hence this question.
Prior to upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion I followed some very good instructions from Tom Nelson on ask.com (http://macs.about.com/od/backupsarchives/ss/diskbackup.htm) related to using Disk Utility to clone my internal Macintosh HD drive to an external hard drive, making it a bootable drive. I cloned to a very nice LaCie external FW drive that had far more room than that needed for the clone. This drive booted just fine as a startup disk, so mission accomplished: I have now a bootable clone of my Lion system prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion.
The upgrade to Mountain Lion went well, and now, before I put any additional apps or much additional data on the original internal Macintosh HD drive, I want to use Disk Utility again to clone the drive so I'll have a snapshot of the system right after the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Questions:
Is there any way to use the same LaCie drive that now holds the Lion startup disk clone to hold the yet-to-be-done Mountain Lion startup disk clone?
If not, how can I move the Lion startup disk clone from the oversized LaCie external drive to a drive more the size of the Lion clone (approx 140G)? The LaCie drive is far too roomy and nice to have sitting gathering dust for only 140G to be used in an emergency restore.
Thanks in advance for your advice.Good info Csound1, and thanks.
So my final question (I think): How does one move/copy a startup disk clone from one external drive to another, and still have it bootable on the new external drive? I'm still considering freeing this LaCie drive up for more dynamic storage and getting another drive for the bootable startup disk clones IF I can move this Lion startup disk clone to a new external drive.
I guess the summary question is: how does one clone a startup disk clone? As I think about this, and recall the Disk Utility screens, couldn't I simply select the Lion clone on the LaCie FW external drive and do the same operation I did with the original internal Lion drive? Basically the same steps as before but this time the source is the LaCie FW external and the destination is a new external drive?
Thanks again; wonderful forum here with very smart people.
