Clone Stamp Tool Alignment

With apology for the rookie question, I can't seem to figure or find an answer to my question...
I'm trying to clone from one layer (photo) to another layer (photo), and simply want an exact pixel-to-pixel replacement.  For instance I'd like to copy pixel (10, 20) from the first layer to pixel (10, 20) on the second layer.
I've found that I can set the upper, left corner of Layer 1 as the "source" (using Alt+click), and then go to my "destination" layer, and click on the same upper, left location, and then subsequent click-and-drags will then be aligned, but that is not an elegant process.  I'm assuming that there's just a button click or option that I'm not aware of that will make all of this much simpler.
Thanks in advance!
  Brian
PS: I'm using PS CS5

OK Brian. Well if you are sure you got the best result you could with Refine edge....
You said Magic Wand, but if you have Refine Edge then you are using CS5, so the Quick Select tool is heaps better.
You mentioned wrinkles in the white background. You might be able to paint them out using a White brush set to Overlay mode.
I think a lot of fashion shots have the flyaway hair removed completely. Dave Hill, for instance, adds a Hair Edge layer to his images where he paints in the edges smoothing them out. You can (just about) see the layers in this video.
But if it was me, from reading your description, I would have another go at the selection and refine edge. Perhaps use some feather, and negative 'Shift Edge'. It took me quite a while to get decent results with Refine edge, but as is the way of these things, it just seems to work now. I add radius until I have gone to far, and then nudge it back. Then click on Smart radius, then adjust the Feather and Contrast controls. You can use the Smooth slider if you want to keep individual hairs, but on the other hand, it would fix the problem.
This is reading like an egg sucking lesson, but it is difficult to know where folk are at with Photoshop.

  • Clone Stamp Tool Align Function

I am using Elements 4.0 on a PC with XP Pro and I can't seem to get the Align option to turn off when I use the Clone Stamp Tool. Deselecting the "Aligned" option on the options toolbar has no effect: the pesky plus sign still follows the cursor everywhere it goes and changes the pixels I want to lay down. The manual doesn't tell me anything -- does anyone have a suggestion? Also, is there a way to set the distance of the plus sign from the cursor? Many thanks.

    Barbara, Carl and Wiebe,
Thanks so much for the explanations -- I think I understand what is happening now. It seems, also, that the same behavior might apply to some other tools as well. I have a lot to learn....
I do have one more question for the group about the Clone Tool: the cursor always assumes the shape of a circle when cloning -- is it possible to give it a different shape, such as a square or rectangle? Or some irregular shape? Thanks.

  • Automated checking of Aligned option in Clone Stamp Tool. Intentional? Or my Install?

    Hi,
Today I noticed a slightly peculiar behaviour in the Clone Stamp tool when "Aligned" is deselected. Clicking twice on the image with alt or option held down causes the behaviour of the tool to change and "Aligned" to become checked. So if you're not planning on using aligned, you alt/option click your mouse for the source point, decide on a different source point, alt/option click again, and suddenly you find yourself using an aligned clone stamp.
This does not happen with the Healing Brush Tool, which makes me think it's not an intentional short cut. It's also mighty irritating.
I've tried it with both x64 and x32 CS6 on Windows. Happens on both. Does it also happen on Macintosh? Is there any way to switch this behaviour off?
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1 (13.0.1 20120808.r.519 2012/08/08:21:00:00) x64
    Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit
    Version: 6.1 Service Pack 1
    Best wishes,

OK, according to Jeffrey Tranberry, there is no currently no way to switch this behaviour off - resetting the tool (something I consistently overlook!) reduced the time that the second click took to be recognised, allowing better control of the tool for me. Hope this helps someone in the future.
If changes were to be made to this I'd want the double click switch to be turned off completely.

  • Clone stamp tool - can't turn 'aligned sample' option off

HI, I am experiencing a problem with the clone stamp tool and healing brush tool where I uncheck the 'aligned sample' optiom, 'alt' click where I want the sampling to come from, then brush over the area I want to be affected.  I have noticed that the results are the same as when the 'algned sample' option is on; the sampling is clearly following the brush just as when 'aligned sample' is checked.  I have reset the tool with no effect.  Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks

Just to clarify, the Aligned option will cause multiple brush strokes to copy from the sampled area as though you had duplicated the sampled layer, hidden it with a mask, and now revealing it. With Aligned off, each brush stroke returns to the sampled area. For example, if you have cloned from a layer with the image of a face, sampling in one of the eyes, multiple brush strokes with Aligned on will result in the face filling in stroke by stroke. With Aligned off, a new eye will be cloned with each brush stroke. And by brush stroke I mean clicking and releasing mouse button.
If this is the behavior you are expecting by not getting and resetting the tool did not fix things, then it is time to reset the application preferences:

  • Problem with Clone Stamp Tool Transparency

Hi there, I am working in CS5 and lately when I have been drawing with the Clone stamp tool, the cloned content seems to be transparent instead of being a 100% opaque clone of the source. The tool is in normal mode but the result looks almost identical multiply mode. I am coming from CS3 and I have not run into this problem in the past. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

…and the align sample to current layer is checked on.
This implies that you need to understand what the settings actually do. You have a choice "current layer", "current and below" or "all layers". These have nothing to with Align, they are all about which layers are sampled.
"Aligned" is about where multiple clicks of the Clone Stamp sample from. How they relate to the source area that you sampled.
Opportunity to air a major complaint of mine - "Aligned" automatically keeps checking itself. Because some Grandpa (photoshop 6 or 7 can't remember) decided that Option double click should be a 'shortcut' to keep Aligned checked all the time. Because they always work with Aligned on I guess, they think everyone should. Unfortunately it means that if you are a fast and experienced user, you have to waste a fair amount of time each day locating a tiny checkbox, to turn the damn thing off again. And again. And again.

Ok I'm editing this image and I would like to use the clone stamp tool to color something the same color as the sky. ( im trying to edit out trees ) but thats not my problem. here is my problem. I "option click" on the my desired color. with the clone stamp tool selected. Then the area im trying to color over, here is the strange part, There is a button that looks like this + and its taking random color sample and putting them in where im trying to color. if that makes sence. Please could somebody help me.

Usually when using the clone stamp tool, you want Aligned Sample checked and if your using a tablet you probably want Tablet pressure controls size off (yours is on).
Also you might try some of the Clone source overlay options in the Clone Source Panel which sometimes makes it easier to see what your going to clone.

  • Photoshop CS4 Clone Stamp Tool behavior

I installed CS4 on a Dual Pentium Xeon 2.4ghz Compaq W8000 system with 3GB of RD 800mhz RAM and Windows XP Pro w/SP3 and all updates. The video card is a ATI Radion AGP-3855 w/512 GDDR3 RAM with latest drivers.
When using the clone stamp tool, after making a sourse selection there is a "trail" that follows the cursor to the destination (similar to using a mouse trail so you can tell where the cursor is on a notebook computer)
When the cursor slows down at the stamp destination the "trail" catches up and covers the destination with the sourse "patch" not allowing precise targeting. It is so cumbersome to use as to make the clone stamp tool almost unusable. The density of the "patch" is not affected by opacity settings.
Is this a new behaviour for this tool in CS4? And if so can it be turned off? Do I have a problem unique to my system?
    Murray

    Hi Anthony,
Good point and thanks for suggesting the clone source features. I can see that it has tremendous potential and will revisit it to see if it will benifit my work. My immediate problem was that overlay was on as a default and it was not obvious to me where to address it.
I have not used this forum before as I have a couple of gurus I lean on, but was really impressed by the immediate help I recieved here.
I am a wildlife-mammal-stock shooter and I have been using Quick Mask, with a feathered brush to make small to medium selections on a, sometimes, flipped version of the image I am working on, or from another one. Moving the selection to a separate transparent (background) layer and then bringing it into my image as a separate layer and aligning it by setting the opacity at 50% and then using rotation, opacity and layer masking to finish the work.I then use the clone stamp at a low (20-50%) opacity to do additional "painting" and to blend the QM object. This approach is cumbersome, but highly effective, however I may be able to use "your" clone source options for simpler or different tasks.
    Thanks,
    Murray

  • Photoshop Elements 8. "Could not use Clone Stamp Tool because of a program error."  Please help.

Photoshop Elements 8.  "Could not use Clone Stamp Tool because of a program error."  Please help.

    Try this:
    Open your picture file
    Access the clone stamp tool
Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard and left click on the area from which you wish to clone, then release the ALT key, and click to place the pixels at the destination
    TIPS:
It is a good idea to open a blank layer at the top in the layers palette, and do the cloning on this layer. Be sure that "sample all layers" at the top is checked. You can change the layer opacity if necessary
Use the bracket keys next to the letter p on the keyboard to increase & decrease the size of the cursor
Let us know  how you make out with the error message now.

  • "Could not use the clone stamp tool because of a program error". How to fix this fault?

When I try to use the Clone Stamp Tool I am met with the message shown above. I have tried in all the ways I could find to beat this: different photos, switched the computer off and on again, run a de-bugging program through it (Advanced System Care 5 Pro) and Microsoft's own stuff. The problem exists solidly and, without one of its most important picture repair tools Photoshop is pretty much useless.
I have just set this new Photoshop Elements 10 program up on my Windows 7 (64) laptop. I have plenty of memory and a large enough hard drive; the machine is fairly new, stable and does not usually suffer from programming problems. I have found nothing on any of the Adobe Forums, or in other sites, to give me a hint as to what has caused the problem other than a bad program disk. My first conclusion was that I should reinstall the program, but it appears that I will then lose one of my two registration rights, that strikes me as being ridiculous as reinstallation is surely the most logical thing to do with a potentially faulty program disk! But I would have to uninstall to reinstall, and that's when the the second registration cuts in I am advised. I have tried every way I can think of to beat this to no avail. I'll be truly grateful if someone can help me out on this. Thank you!

Thanks guys! I'm afraid that I'm still not sure: I've been told that uninstalling - after of course deactivating - amounts to a life gone... Yet according to the set of licence rules Adobe has, you're allowed to copy programs in a mirror image which, of course, would be used for a clean wipe - and surely that contradicts their set of rules? The rules seem to imply that that would be okay: no life lost. My concern is that through no fault of my own I have what appears to be a duff program; it's out of warranty now (my fault - I didn't install it until I could buy a more heavy-duty laptop). If the rule is "two-strikes-and-your-out, then I lose my last reactivation after THIS installation. I will get in touch with Adobe - but I live in the UK, and therein lies the problem: the equivalent of $39 dollars for the chat and whatever else it might cost is off-putting to me I'm afraid. If I could find out whether or not Adobe has a patch or something I would be a lot more happy about it all - the reinstallation after all may NOT cure the problem and I'd be stuck with a bunch of coffee cup coasters! Hey, ho...

  • Photoshop CS5 Clone Stamp Tool option-click just stopped working, why?

I've been using clone stamp tool option-click (healing brush  option-click also) on Photoshop CS5 on my Mac 10.6.5 and it stopped  working suddenly on Monday.  Had just used it on Sunday.  So, I've tried  to isolate the problem.
    1. Went to Apple store and my keyboard and  mouse work fine on their inhouse systems running Photosochop CS5.   Problem still exists on home system.
    2. Adobe photoshop suggested I go back to Mac 10.6.3.  I did and problem still exits.
    3. Reset all presets in CS5.  Problem still exists.
    4.  Spent several hours with Adobe Photoshop tech on phone -- he couldn't  make it work remotely either using his keyboard.  Reloaded Photoshop  from scratch.  Problem still exists.
    Question:
Could this be a hardware problem?  Graphic board problem?
Or is this a software problem aside from Mac OS and CS5?

    Hi Joan
It sounds like you are not having fun at all : )
    >I talked with a for fee Mac guru today who says I need to wipe slate clean and install operating system from scratch since I did not use time machine.
.....you ever notice how easy it is for a consultant to tell you what to do when they don't have to do it?
..... I wonder why the guru thought your system was gone if your new user account was working?
If your new user account is working.... why not use it?  The system seems fine but something went screwy with the settings in your original account.
hopefully someone else will chime in here with more insight before you start from scratch.

  • Adobe photoshop elements 9 . i cannot get the circle to appear on clone stamp tool and spot healing

adobe photoshop elements 9 , i cannot get the circle  to appear using clone stamp tool and the spot healing brush . i`ve tried restating my computer and unloading and loading the adobe disc . but still no good .

I had this same problem and was searching for answers. I also prefer using a circle instead of crosshairs. I hope you've figured it out by now, but, if you haven't, here is the answer (I am using Elements 9, but, it should work for other versions I think):
    1. Open up Elements Editor, Click on Edit, Click on Preferences, Click on Display & Cursors.
    2. Under Painting Cursors, select Full Size Brush Tip
    3. (optional) - if you want crosshairs within your circle, then also select Show Crosshair in Brush Tip.
    4. Click ok.
Now use the brush, and it should have a circle to use.
P.S. Sometimes if you have your Caps Lock key on, that removes the circle as well.

  • PSE6 crashes when using Clone Stamp tool

Hi! I'm new to PSE and have a standard install of 6.0 - no addons. I've been using the editor for just a couple of days now, but I have experience with other graphic editors.
I've just started using the Clone Stamp tool. I've cut out a background from a photo, put it into a new file using New>From Clipboard, and am using the Clone Stamp tool to paint background over the edges of the cut.
So, start Photoshop in edit mode, open picture (.psd created above), select clone stamp tool, right-click and select 100 pixel brush from default palette, place brush some way away from the edge and Alt-click to set "From" point, then move the brush next to edge, click, and start painting over the edge. All OK. Now, move the brush to the right-edge of the picture and start painting so the edge of the brush goes outside the picture a little. This is where it crashes for me. It may be that it's actually the from area that is outside the picture that causes the problem.
Does anyone else get this problem?
Now I'm going back to try again taking great care along the right-hand edge to try and stop it crashing!
    Alan

    Hi Alan,
is it still crashing for you? I tried the same steps and works fine for me. Are you working on Windows/Mac?

  • Problem using the clone stamp tool in cs6 64 bit

I am trying to use the clone stamp tool, however each time I alt click  on a PC runing system 7- 64 bit and try to clone an area, I get a window stating that I have not defined an area. Alt clicking again does not solve the problem. I work in a computer lab and this option works fine on our Macs using option click in PS CS6.

If »Show Overlay« is checked in the Clone Source Panel is the cursor showing the source imagery?
Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • Clone stamp tool

I have just upgraded from a trial version. And I am having a problem with the clone stamp tool it shows an error message,I have tried download the softwear again but still no luck. Also the boxes in the right hand corner are grey rather than coloured are they supposed to be.

    Hi,
It seems you are using PSE9. Then the colors of the Edit, Create and Share tabs are removed. They are now in shades of Gray. But that should not be related to your facing problems with the Clone stamping tool
Did you try : reset tool option from the arrow in the extreme left of the options bar.
else you can also try the following steps:
    1) Close PSE editor if open
    2) Go to Welcome screen
    3) Press and Hold Ctrl+ Alt + Shift, and click on Editor.
    4) Hold the keys till you get a dialog asking you to delete the prefrences.
    5) Click yes.
    6) try again.
Please share the results after the steps.
