Codec help needed - Quicktime to Final Cut

I am having a problem in my workflow using Keynote, QuickTime and Final Cut Pro.
I’m trying to create some presentations in Keynote, export them to Quicktime, then import them into Final Cut Pro and then export them into various formats.
I want to have the ability to export these to DVD in the highest quality possible. I will also be exporting them for web streaming, downloading and to play on iPods in the future.
My understanding is that bigger at the top is better and then I can always export them into smaller formats. Correct? Which leads me to believe I have to use either of the first two options below.
Keynote slides can start in 1920 x 1080, 1680 x 1050, 1280 x 720, 1024 x 768 and a few small formats. These will export in the same resolution to Quicktime.
After I import them into Final Cut I believe I have to (1) adjust the Sequence settings and (2) in the Audio/Video setting, adjust the Capture and Sequence presets.
I originally was trying to work with 1680 x 1050 but was then told that makes it more time consuming when rendering and exporting my video.
The proportions are fine with me at 1920 x 1080. Should I use that?
But whatever you recommend to start off with, then what do I adjust in my Sequence Settings and in my Audio/Video settings for Capture and Sequence presets?
Thanks!

Thank you!
I did what you said, exported at 1920 x 1080 in Apple Pro Res 422. I had to increase the fps back to 60, as the transitions were jagged at 24fps.
The above looks great when I view it in Quicktime.
I imported the above Quicktime file into FCP. FCP did select the settings as above.
When I exported with "current settings", the quality wasn't good.
I tried exporting with Apple Pro Res 422 60i - this wasn't very good.
I tried exporting with Apple Pro Res 422 24p - this wasn't very good.
I tried exporting with Apple Pro Res 422 30p - this was the best. It wasn't as good as the original export from Keynote, pretty good, but noticeably different from the original export.
Is this normal, that I will loose resolution even at the same settings? Or am I still missing something?
I also tried the same thing starting with Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) 1920 x 1080. I had similar results.

  • Help needed for a Final Cut Express project Compression

    Hi guys,
This is my first post as I usually find answers to all my questions reading through the various thread. I just haven't found an answer to my last pb yet hence the new topic. Hope you guys can help.
I have got this very simple slideshow that I need to burn onto DVD. The issue is that it's LONG. It's an hour and 17 minutes and i have no idea what is the best way to compress/export this so I can burn this on a single layer DVD.
I tried various options and it suddenly stops because I "only" have 13GB of free space on my macbook. 13GB!!!! How will this ever fit on a DVD? and this is with medium quality...
    please help!
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi Sasha.
Woke up this morning and the burning never started because the file was too big. I exported the file from FCE and it was 16GB! iDVD never managed to fit it in my single layer DVD. Am I using iDD correctly?
I am thinking I need to compress this further on FCE right? I don't understand why such a simple movie (although very long) can take so much space. It's only about 900MB of JPGs and 120MB of music. I don't want to bring the quality down to "low" because it won't look good.
So far, I have been exporting using quicktime conversions and I tried the following formats: tried exporting in AVI and QuickTime Movie. For the compression type, I tried DVCPRO50-NTSC on medium quality (with AVI) and Photo-JPG & DVCPRO50-NTSC again (with QuickTime Movie) both on slightly better than medium quality. Results all were well above 10GB.
    Please, help!
    Thanks.
    Hope you can help.

  • Does CC 2014 eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422?

    Hello:
Just today, I was working on a Mac system that does not have any of the applications that I would have expected to need to have installed in order to do more than just decompress movie files compressed with Apple ProRes 422.
I was expecting to have to install Final Cut Studio 3, Final Cut Pro X, Compressor 4, and/or QuickTime 7 with the QuickTime Pro key; however, none of those applications are installed and I am able to create custom QuickTime Apple Pro Res422 Sequences in Premiere Pro as well as export using Apple ProRes 422.  After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder also show all the Apple ProRes variations.
Does CC 2014 eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422?  Is it something happening on the OS or QuickTime level that would affect CC or CS6 in the same way?
I've done a web search, but haven't really come up with anything other than older articles about needing to have FCP installed (and I typically work on systems with Final Cut Studio 3 installed as well as CS6, CC, or CC 2014).  If more detailed information is available, it would be great to be able to read up on it.
The system is a 21.5-inch iMac running Mac OS X 10.8.5, QuickTime Player 10.2, and Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 (8.0.0 - I know an update is available for PrPro, but it's not my system to make that change).
    Thanks in advance,
    Warren Heaton

    Hi Emil:
I use ProRes all the time as well, but I have Final Cut Studio on my workstations.
I had not come across MindPower009's YouTube video.  That explains how ProRes could be showing up without FCP or Compressor.
So, the answer to my question would be, "No, CC 2014 does not eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422; however, if you are willing to be in violation Apple's terms of use, you can install the ProRes codecs anyway."
Even though MindPower009's YouTube video comments claim "FREE and LEGAL", it's clear from both the Apple download page and the ProRes codecs installer that Apple expects you to own at least one of their applications.
    Thanks again for the link!

  • Do I need to have Final Cut to run Motion?

    Hello guys,
I understand that I can purchase Motion 5 (and Compressor 4) as stand alone applications, but I was wondering:
Do I need to have Final Cut installed in order to run it?
Just use it to create animated graphics, then export it as a self contained file and use it in any editing program.
And I was also wondering if Motion 5 would run OK on a new iMac (27 inch one with NVIDIA GE FORCE GTX 775 card).
Thank you so much for your feedback,
    Paul

You do not need to have Final Cut installed to run Motion or Compressor.  Each app can run as a stand-alone. Some functionality is enhanced when running them in combination. Motion will run just fine on any current hardware.  You can always check the system requirments to know if the applications will run on a particular computer.

Can anyone tell me the best settings to export a Quicktime from Final Cut Express HD maintaining the best quality but getting the file size as small as possible?

No. When you install FCP, it will move the FCS applications into a folder called Final Cut Studio.

  • When exporting as a quicktime movie, final cut pro crashes!

When exporting as a quicktime movie, final cut pro crashes about 3/4ths the way through the 12 hour process. I'm saving it to a La Cie 500 GB disc by fire wire. It's worked before but after I converted one SD sequence (that was shot in HD)to a HD sequence, I haven't been able to export it and it won't play straight at anything bigger than 25% size. Please if you have any advice I won't forget it. I'm trying to export as ProHD 1060i.

I converted one SD sequence (that was shot in HD)to a HD sequence
How, exactly? And what were the settings of your new HD sequence? DVCPRO HD 1080 60i?

  • I need to buy final cut pro software  and i need it to support arabic writing the problem iam in germany  the  i tune here does not

i need to buy final cut pro software  and i need it to support arabic writing the problem iam in germany  the  i tune here does not give you chance to choose the
    language

If you want the menus and dialogues of the app to be in Arabic, that's not possible, there is no Arabic version of this software.
If you just want to write Arabic language titles, etc., the language of the app is irrelevant, the input of different languages is handled by the OS, and Arabic input is always available.
All Apple software is multilingual, no matter where you buy it. For example, the user interface for Final Cut Pro can be switched among English, Chinese, French, German, and Japanese.

  • Need help... Final Cut Express to Final Cut Express HD

    Hey guys,
I recently edited my wedding video in Final Cut Express. It was filmed in HD, and I was not able to export my project in HD format... no matter what I tried. It comes out pixelated and is definitely not HD. I'm thinking FCE cannot export true HD video.
I then tried opening my project into Final Cut Express HD, and I'm getting General Error 41.
Is there a way that I can open my project in FCE HD or FCP so that I don't have to start all over again? If i would have known... i would have created my project in an HD program in the first place...
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
    Julie

    >The files are 1920 x 1080 HD, h.264 codec
Problem #1: FCE doesn't work natively with H.264 files.  They need to be converted to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) prior to importing into FCE.
    >i was in DV NTSC 48 khz.... Now I'm thinking this is probably the problem?
You are correct.  You need to create a new Sequence set for AIC in the resolution you want.  Look at FCE's Easy Set Ups to choose the correct Sequence settings and convert the H.264 files so they match that.
    >Would like a file for dvd, you tube and usb key
You'll need to export two different ways; one for DVD and one for web/file delivery.  For DVD, export a self-contained or reference movie from FCE (File-Export-QuickTime Movie).  Do NOT use QuickTime Conversion.  Import the resulting file into iDVD for authoring and burning.  Keep in mind that DVD is standard definition only so the HD footage will be downconverted to SD.
For web/file delivery, export "Using QuickTime Conversion" and choose the format/settings you need.

  • Need help exporting videos in final cut

Hi guys, I have been using Final Cut for about 6 months now and I am STILL having trouble exporting my files. I mean there are so many options I am unsure which one to choose.
This current wedding video I did for a client...due to my lack of expertise, the footage turned out very grainy. I still put together a decent video, and it was time for me to export the video in order to upload on vimeo. I do not know the proper settings to use when uploading to vimeo, so I just use Final Cut's Quicktime Conversion and I just export the file with LAN/Intranet settings. When I saw this footage, I noticed the grain was ALL GONE... but has aliasing
question # 1...why did this happen?
If I export the file as quicktime movie, the grain is all still there.
When its time for me to burn the movie, exported sending the the file to compression, and then using DVD: Best quality 90 minutes setting
when I saw the footage, GRAINY again!!
I threw the smaller file which had no grain on it but had aliasing...and the dvd, looked okay but the aliasing was still there, so obviously I'm doing SOMETHING wrong..
    here's the file
    http://vimeo.com/5312419
    pass: vimeoaccount101
Question #2: What is the best way for me to export my movies so that I see minimal grain and no Aliasing..
    Thanks!

First of all let me say you do great work. I was very impressed! I would hire you to do my wedding.
#1 As far as vimeo is concerned if you go to their help section they have very clear instructions as to the best specs for uploading video.
#2 With the graininess & Aliasing, we need to know more info. What camera/s did you use and at what settings(e.g. interlaced, progressive, etc.)
Off subject, I am curious to know how you achieved your pan effect. Was it hand held, did you use a glidecam? Once again I am a fan of how you pick and choose your shots...great work! You should be doing movies, not weddings.

  • I need to put final cut pro on another computer. I have the receipt via my itunes but I can't see what I need to be able to download it again?  Can anyone help?

Can someone help. I've read the detail and have my order and invoice number but I can't seem to be able to find how to download fina cut pro onto another computer (it's on one and I have now taken that off and need to put it on another with a larger memory).
Anyone able to give me notes for a dummy?

Are you talking about FCP X? You just need to open the App Store application in the mac, login with the same Apple ID you used to buy the software, and click on "purchases".
If you mean legacy Final Cut, then you probably need to have the original disks, but you should ask in the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Need Help with install of Final Cut Pro HD

    Hi
I am tryting to install FCP Express HD on my G4 Ibook and I get a strange error message. It was able to instaLL fine but when I got to run the program I get this message
Can't install unable to find easy setup file please reinstall and try again.
I have uninstalled and resinstalled 2x any ideas
    Ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Make sure you uninstall all the components of Final Cut. Do a search on your Finder. Then install from the installation disc. If this doesn't work you should contact Apple for help with installation issues. The disc may be defective.

  • Export Quicktime from Final Cut but that Quicktime file won't play on my PC

So, I filmed a video in HD with my Sony camera at school, edited it using their Final Cut software, and exported it to the default Quicktime file (same one that can be imported into iDVD). I burned that Quicktime file to a data dvd (not DVD-video) and brought it home to my PC. I expected Quicktime to be able to play the file no problem because I have played many QT HD files before, but it will not work.
I downloaded the EVO QuickTime Component and DirectShow Plugin for Windows because I read that was a crucial codec, but that did not change anything.
Please help! I am running Windows XP Pro with all the latest updates, and the latest version of Quicktime. Thanks.

The default format that FCP uses is DV, which many PCs have trouble with. Try exporting with the "Using Quicktime Conversion" button, and select "Quicktime Movie". Or, if all you need to do is watch it (because the quality of AVIs is not great), export to AVI.
I won't say "what are you doing with a PC?!", becuase that would be a silly question (I assume you have a reason).

  • Mov file cant be opened in quicktime or Final cut pro 7

    Hello People,
Im about to pull my hairs out. I have a .mov file recorded on a Canon 7D. I have played the file before on quicktime and it used be ok. But one time I opened in Final cut pro 7 but didint get to finish the project (however im not sure if I compressed it or did something to the file, I think I didnt). Months later im trying to open that same file in quicktime player and it says
The document “MVI_5515.mov” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands...
and if Im trying to drag and drop the file into Final Cut Pro  says  Wrong File Type.
When I check the more info section in the info box, it doesnt show the codec like in other mov files. It just says about the last time the file was opened.
It cant be either previewed like other files. Of course something is wrong with it..I dont know why or how. But I really need that file to work and be fixed.
    Please help me out!!
    Thanks!!!

You can't "improve" the quality of what is already a digital video. The "data" that makes up the video can't be improved once the camera records it as a file. There isn't even a theory about this. Going from one codec to a higher codec does not "add" any quality. In fact, your method is degrading your quality, as you're causing your HDV data file to be re-encoded twice to another HDV file.
You're creating a larger size video file, with less quality do to doubling the compression generation with QuickTime Conversion, and it's the unnecessary increased file size that is making the CPU work overtime to play it back.
Export > Quicktime, self-contained, this is the BEST quality you'll get, the most efficient playback, too.
If you want it to play back easier, convert it to H.264 (quality set to medium, trust me), or ProRes 422.
