"Codec not found" problem upon startup

My computer recently crashed (after using Pacifist to attempt to downgrade to QT 7.2) and went into UNIX mode. Thankfully, all is fine after a complete archive and install.
Now I am having some issues with certain programs - mainly FCP. Upon opening the program, it says:
"codec not found you may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card" - Then after clicking - another box pops up saying, "Error - not enough memory"
The audio plays on the clips but no video. From other searches, I trashed the preferences and made sure all of the software was updated (multiple times) - but that didn't work.
Do I need to re-install FCP? I'm using version 5.0.4
If I do the re-install, can I just put the discs in and let it go to work? Or do I need to un-install what's in there now?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Aloha

  • Codec Not Found error when trying to render/export layered sequence

I have a sequence that I never had problems with in the past but as of yesterday when I open the project and try to render or export. I get the infamous dialogue box saying, "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."
I've narrowed it down to only being a problem wherever I have two particular types of media clips layered one on top of the other. In this case it is occurring wherever I have an Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) clip layered with an Animation codec clip containing a graphical bug that was created in After Effects and exported as a Quicktime Movie with RGB+Alpha. Because of the Alpha channel in the bug clip, it is automatically given the Animation codec upon export from After Effects to retain and preserve the transparency needed. I've also narrowed it down to only occurring when all this is combined on a sequence with its compressor set to standard ProRes 422 or ProRes HQ. If I set it to any other codec, such as any DV/DVC Pro or MPEG IMX codec then I can render and export again.
Also interesting is that I can nest the sequence into another sequence and render and export just fine as well, even with it set to either ProRes codec (which will probably prove to be a suitable workaround for the time being), however, any additional insight into this issue that anyone can provide, pertaining to what may have changed or caused my original sequence to suddenly not want to render anymore would be greatly appreciated.
And if anyone else reading this comes across this this same type of problem themselves, then I suggest what I just got to work: Duplicate your sequence, then delete the clips from the new sequence and nest the original sequence into it.
Here is some additional background info if desired:
I'm using FCP 6.0.6. The sequence I have going here is set to Apple ProRes 422 and consists entirely of Quicktime Movie files. Video Track 1 has the main video clips using the ProRes HQ codec (Again, even with the sequence set to ProRes HQ, it doesn't make any difference here). Track 2 has a graphic bug that was created in After Effects and layered over the Track 1 clips at various places. I was able to work with these clips and render as well as export the sequence with no problems last week. However, I was requested to revise the bug in After Effects, and then replace the old bug with new bug and export the sequence again. So yesterday, I simply opened up the After Effects project file for the bug, made the revisions and exported it with a new name using the same settings as the previous bug. The render problem I'm now facing surfaced right when I opened the FCP project file yesterday, before even importing and replacing the old bug with the new bug. I went ahead and imported the new bug and placed it in place of where the old bug occurred. But the render and problem remained. On this particular problem sequence, I can render the new bug if I actually disable or remove the ProRes clip beneath it, but I cannot in turn render the ProRes clip after disabling/removing the Animation clip above it.
Now, I can copy either type of clip into their own sequence allowing the clips' respective native settings (ProRes HQ & Animation) to take effect and then they will playback and export just fine. I can even copy the bug clip (Animation codec) and paste it into the other clip's ProRes HQ sequence and it will render and export just fine from there as long as it is placed next to the other clip and not layered over it. On these newer sequences, it is only when the bug (Animation) clip is layered over the ProRes HQ clip with the sequence set to ProRes or ProRes HQ do I tend to still get the "Codec not found" error.
I've also tried the following steps to try and troubleshoot to no avail:
    1. Copied entire sequence into a new sequence. Problem still occurs.
    2. Closed FCP, trashed preferences, and restarted FCP. Problem still not resolved.
    3. Opened project on another computer, had same problem.

Thanks for sharing these ideas about dealing with this error message.
For what it's worth, I finally managed to solve a similar issue by going into sequence settings, choosing the Video Processing tab, and changing Render 10-bit YUV to Render 8-bit YUV.
    Maybe this helps someone?

  • Error message: 'Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card' - then - 'Error. Out of memory'

Hi all. This is a new error I've never seen before.
It's stopping me doing anything at all really.
As soon as I start up FCP and click on a sequence I get this message: 'Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card.'
Then I click on OK and it says 'Error - Out of memory.'
I've heard rumours that it could be the fact I'm using a strange type of JPEG, but it still happens with PNGs.
I've made sure my scratch disks are all going to the right place. I also have 100gb of free space.
The version of FCP I'm using is 6.0.5. I'm using an iMac with OSX 10.4.11 (yes, I know it's old!) and I've downloaded the latest version of Quicktime.
Help, anyone? I have an assignment due in tomorrow.
    Many thanks...

p.s. having looked at other posts, perhaps I am missing some (or all) of the relevant codecs?
In the folder Macintosh HD > Library > Quicktime
there is basically nothing. Do you think this is the problem?
If so, where do I download FCP codecs from?
    Many thanks..

  • Codec Not Found - Viscious Cycle

I have imported .jpegs that are giving me a "Codec Not Found" on RED screen in the Canvas. Files that were added previously with no errors, now have "Codec Not Found".

I had the same problem when I imported a jpg from a CYMK color PSD file from Photoshop. I had to change the mode to RGB color before converting to a jpg and still needed to render in the timeline but no longer received the error message. My message was also followed by Error: Out of Memory using the CYMK color jpg.

    3. Make a new sequence & choose appropriate preset ie resoluton & codec of project
    4. paste all the layers in new sequence.
    5. MAKE SURE you delete photoshop sequence that was made when importing .psd

I did a search on my system and found the Photoshop has a fastcore plug-in.  Creative Cloud includes a subscription version of CS6 version 13.1.2.   I do not know if you installed that or not.  The cc un-install may have done something.  You may need to use Adobe Cleaner then Install The Perpetual CS6 version of Photoshop  CS6 version 13.0.6 Mac or Photoshop  CS6 version 13.0.1.3 PC and not the subscription CS6 extended version 13.1.2.  Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6   If you need to download the CS6 installer Download CS6 products.

  • Codec not found. And other errors on fresh install.

I just upgraded to a new 8 core Mac Pro from a 15" Powerbook G4. I had been cutting some DVCPRO HD material on FCP 5.1 and installed it on the Mac Pro seemingly flawlessly. Now when I try and open my sequences in my (all material was stored on Firewire drives) I get the following two error messages in succession:
Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card.
    Followed by:
    Error: Out of memory.
This mac pro has 8GB of Mac certified memory in it. I can't imagine what the problem is, can anyone help? All sequences are DVCPRO HD 720p24. Is this the dreaded curse of first generation Macs?
    Matt
Mac Pro 8 Core, 8GB ram   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

When you originally captured this material, were you using 5.1, or an earlier version? The closest I've had to this problem was that HD DVCPRO files created on an Intel Mac in 5.1 cannot be viewed in pre-5.1 installations of FCP on a G4. It's not the same problem as you're describing, but I think there's some connection.

  • Quicktime codec not found - can't open in FCP

I have the FCP:Beyond the Basics book. The media files are largely HD quality. Upon trying to open them, FCP gives me the following error,"Codec not found. You may be using compressor type without the corresponding hardware card." This is followed by a "not enough memory" message.
The source files also cannot be opened up in quicktime, so I assume it's a quicktime codec issue. My FCP and QT Pro are completely updated. Nowhere can I find where I might gain the missing codec or why it isn't present to begin with. I have reinstalled the media and am inprocess of reinstalling QT.
My old MacBookPro (last year's model) could read all of these files, no prob.

    QT reinstall did no good.
As a side note...this is a totally new computer. Oringinally, I installed FCP but not DVD Studio Pro. At a later date, I installed Studio Pro. I don't know if this messed with codecs or not.
Also, I couldn't find any apple hdv codec in the qt library. There is the apple intermediate codec, though. Hmmmmmmm.

  • Odd "Codec not found" error

I'm working on a DVCPRO HD project shot at 24p on P2 cards. After editing and color correction I'm trying to render the timeline. The render gets about half way through the project and then halts with the "Codec not found..." error. None of the rest of the clips on the timeline will render even thought all footage is from the same shoot and in the same format.
The individual QuickTime movie clips playback fine in the Finder so I don't think I have any corrupt media. Also, the entire timeline will "Export using QuickTime conversion" just fine. Any ideas on what's going on?
    Thanks.

I just wasted several precious hours dealing with exactly the same problem -- "Codec Not Found" when trying to render a DVCProHD 720p24 timeline. In my case, the video processing was set to "Render all YUV material in high-precision YUV", and I had deleted all the previously existing render files just to get a clean set -- sometimes old render files have caused me problems. The render process would chug away for 30 minutes or more(it's a 30 minute piece), then announce the error without having accomplished anything.
I then started rendering in sections, and it turned out that the problem was a jpeg image that had been resized with the motion controls. I resized the original image in photoshop, exported it as a tiff that was itself the right size, put it in the timeline, and then it rendered fine.
I don't know what's going on, but it seems like either the jpeg format was a problem (which I doubt), or the fact that it was resized in FCP, or that plus the fact that there was a text screen over it. But I did resolve the problem in my case.
Does anyone have any idea of what's going on here?

  • Final Cut Express Codec not found

I had to re-install Snow Leopard because Lion caused issues on my MAC PRO with previously installed Power PC friendly applications. So I had to reinstall Final Cut Express HD 3.0. I ran an update check and everything was up to date. However, when I tried to open using HDV Apple Intermediate Codec1080i60 an error popped up that said
"Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."
Are there any solutions to this?

    What exactly is your problem?
There are only 2 reasons you need AIC.
One is to convert  HDV which is shot on Mini-DV TAPE cameras and the other is to convert AVCHD.
If you only have FCE 3 you cannot use AVCHD footage as you need FCE 4 and an Intel Mac.
If you are using an HDV TAPE camera you do not use Log and Transfer, you use Capture.
Also, what exactly did you mean by this?
    " . . . . when I tried to open using HDV Apple Intermediate Codec1080i60".
The normal way to open FCE is to double-click the icon in the Applications folder.

  • AAC Codec "Not Found" in CS5.5 PPRO

When I try to export video using the H264, a warning comes up and it reads: "AACA Codec not found". I check the codec folder and there are AAC codec in there. How can I reinstall if that is the problem?

Run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool, then reinstall from your DVD or use the download:
Direct Download Links for Adobe Software
Also check your system and remove any CoDec packs. The problem is most likely not that the Co_Dec doesn't exist, but that its association has been usurped by garbage liek K-Lite or whatever.

  • CODEC NOT FOUND

Hello, all of a sudden I'm having all kinds of probs with FCE HD v 3.5.1  When I launch it pop up box says CODEC NOT FOUND!   U might be using compression type w/o corresponding hardware card.  I then hit OK and it loads but interface no longer shows CANVAS & TIMELINE windows.  They are not active and toolbar shows both are GRAYED OUT.   What gives?   I have Powerbook G4 MacOS X 10.4.11

The clips from the iPhone have been transcoded to 1920 x 1080i.
The Sequence setting is 1440 x 1080  for NTSC use.
This is a mis-match meaning FCE has to render to fit it correctly.
If you do not see the 1920 x 1080 sizes in the FCE>Easy Setups you will need to update to 4.0.1.
Video standards are rules that apply to video of differing countries.
    50i is for PAL regions.
    60i is for NTSC regions.
Note: FCE at this size can only work with clips that are interlaced or i.
p means progressive and will not work.

  • I can't export to QuickTime, it gives message "Codec not found."

I have long sequence, in which I have some Channel Swap effects.  I get an error message saying it can't be rendered for a sequence this long (72 minutes) with my hardware (2009 iMac running OS 10.6.8).  When I try to export to QuickTime, it tells me "Codec not found." I'm trying to export to Apple Pro Res HQ.  What should I do?  I took out the Channel Swap effects and didn't get the message anymore in the sequence, but I'm afraid the codec issue will crop up again, even though I changed it to Apple Pro Res in the Render Options tab under Sequence settings, rather than just "Same as Sequence".  Eventually, I will have to export to HQ, and I'm not sure this codec lets me do that.  Help!

You don't give any details about your format or sequence settings, so I'll be general here.
    Just a couple of observations...
The only time limitation messages I've seen (in the last decade) have been resource-oriented, not NLE constraints so if your system doesn't like a 72-minute sequence I'd be looking at drive space or something like that. Have you tried outputting two 36-minute pieces?
I don't understand your logic in using the sequence codec option (which is limited to two specific formats) to control output of the sequence rather than the output "same as sequence" dropdown) options. Personally, I don't use either, I output the sequence as is and transcode in Compressor.
Simple as it sounds, "Codec not found" generally means exactly that, so I'd be looking at whether the codecs need to be re-installed.
    Hope this helps

  • Work around for server not found problems on FF36

I have found a work around for all the people having server not found problems with FF36.
If you manually set your network adapter DNS to an external DNS server (as opposed to your local ISP) then the problem goes away. I set mine to use the two google DNS servers:
    Preferred: 8.8.8.8
    Alternate: 8.8.4.4
Not a clue why this works but it is 100% successful on my desktop PC, whereas before I could hardly connect to a webpage with FF36 without multiple page refreshes and much frustration, even though FF35 was fine and rolling back to FF35 was also fine.
Something has changed in FF36 and either the way it handles DNS or the way it works with some network adapters.
It is nothing to do with add-ons, profiles or firewall software as I have tried all of these things and only the DNS change made a difference. I even copied over a full working profile and the program files directory for Mozilla from my portable which was having no problems and the problem still existed on the desktop, which is why I started looking at the network adapater since everything else between the working PC and the non working one was identical.
Hopefully this will help the developers to pin down the real cause of the problem and fix it in the next release.

Well done. Thanks for finding that.
That is not only assigned but has an approved patch included in the scheduled Fx36.0.1 release so it should be fixed in few days, watch out for the upgrade.
    * Bug 1093983 - DNS resolver should not use 'ANY' to get cached records for TTL [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1093983#c35 c#35]
    * https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Channels/Meetings/2015-03-03#Schedule_Update
With the bug now fixed it would not really be appropriate to add further comment. I do now see another related bug assigned but not being fast tracked, so if all goes well that will probably land in Firefox 39.
