Color correcting in french final cut

Hi everyone,
I'm using a french version of final cut pro HD 4.5. I can't find the color correction tab with the three cercles, does anyone use a french version so I can fallow propely the path that will lead me to make my color corrections. If not, maybe you can guide me in my task: I shot a video with a white machine. When I did the shooting, I wanted to create a look that cannot identifie any space or room, so I've used white foam core. The problem is that even if I did my white balance, my background and the machine is not white enought to give the impression of a " no where place". It's been a while since I did editing and I've never use color correction before. I know that there are tutorial that exist but time and money are a matter of facte that I can't purchase them for the moment. If anyone can help me and guide me in my task, because I've lost a lot of precious time trying to find a solution, it would be very appreciate.

Jacques,
DAVID,
Your answer was helpful but Jacques was able to identifie the exact term wich help me a lot because the word in french is quite different then color correction.
Now, how I isolate my object from my background and moreover, my background is not the same white everywhere, it there a way of standardizing the whole background without my principal object being over-exposed?

  • Color Correction with in Final Cut Pro 6

    Hi All,
I have a showreel of my work, and some of the clips have sections that are darker than I would like them to be, and I would like to correct the color issues. Is it possible to only correct 3 seconds of over dark video, and not have the entire 2 hours thus over bright? I have tried with key frames, and maybe I am not doing the right way.
I put a keyframe on the 1st frame of the clip in question, then on the last frame of the correct section of the clip, then 1 frame later another keyframe, this is now on the incorrect color clip, then 2 more keyframes, last frame of incorrect color, then on the 1st frame of correct video.
    Is this ok?
    Justine

A better way is to blade (or add edit) at the beginning and end of the section that needs the correction and just apply the color correct filter to that section.

  • Color Resolution Presets and Final Cut fullscreen playback of 2.35:1

I have sent a project from Final Cut Pro to Color. In Color's resolution settings, I have selected the 2k 2.35 setting to achieve a wider image. Once I finish Coloring and rendering and I send the Color project back to Final Cut Pro, the aspect ratio is a perfect 2.35:1 wide image.
HOWEVER, when I use the Digital Cinema Desktop preview playback function (basically full-screen playback), Final Cut plays my footage back at 2.35:1, but stretched to fit 16:9. This is what it looks like in full-screen: http://gallery.me.com/amirij#100115/Screen-20shot-202009-09-04-20at-203-58-52-20 PM&bgcolor=black
Why is it doing this and how can I fix it? I assume it's a setting, but can't find it...
    Thanks in advance:
    Johnny Amiri

    1) Color correction, especially when done with separate application from the NLE, should be done AFTER picture lock. There are some measures if there are tweaks after, but they aren't 100%. Always wait to color correct until after you have picture lock. But you can render out of Color, media with handles, so you can do minor tweaks. And if you add new shots, make those into separate projects, send them to Color, grade, and send back.
    2) You need to either read the manual, or look for a tutorial on Color. It goes through all the steps. Send to Color...grade in Color...render...then SEND TO FCP. That'll send a new sequence to FCP.  Not a rendered out QT file...the full sequence.

  • Clips being sent from color are appearing in Final Cut blank

Basically, exactly waht I said in the post. When I 'send to' final cut after correcting a video, I try to open the new sequence. Firstly the sequence doesn't have the name of the Color file, it just comes up as a timecode. And secondly when viewed in the timeline it has a yellow highlight and is totally blank. Just a single white clip. I thought I was being silly and maybe I had just sent a single clip to final cut. I double checked that I wasn't being a goon. But can't seem to fathom it out. Am I being a complete goon, is there a simple answer?
    Any help much appreciated.

    Help!
So I've tried rendering all the shots from Color as Apple ProRes 422 but I still get the same problems with choppiness on the same clips. Therefor, it is not making a difference wether the clips are ProRes or DVCProHD...... I don't get it.
In the FCP Timeline, the choppy clips are looked at differently in terms of render stats (they have the slight blue render bar above them whereas the others do not....)

  • My HD TV as NTSC Monitor for secondary color correction

Can I use my new Panasonic HD TV model TH-42PX80U as a NTSC monitor for secondary color correction using both Final Cut Pro out of a Macbook Pro intel? What cable I can use to conect via HDMI? Will the color acuracy will be similar to that of a NTSC color correction monitor? will my TV do a decent job for NTSC? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
I am not sure I have this HDMI cable to be use in my macbook pro does it comes with it?

Can I use my new Panasonic HD TV model TH-42PX80U as a NTSC monitor for secondary color correction using both Final Cut Pro out of a Macbook Pro intel?
Yes, but I would only trust it if you are going to be making DVDs, and ONLY if you properly set it up. I would not rely on it for broadcast color correction. The reason broadcast monitors exist is to have a standard...HDTVs don't have a standard. Go to best buy and look at all of them....none of them match. BUT, as a nice simple solution for DVD, I'd use it.
But the only way you are going to get a signal to it is with the Matrox MXO. It will do component to the monitor, or you can get a DVI to HDMI adapter...if you do that the MXO software will allow you to set the monitor up to color bars. That option is only available from of the DVI out of the box.
Will the color acuracy will be similar to that of a NTSC color correction monitor?
No...it would be similar to color correcting NTSC on your home television...because that it what it is.
will my TV do a decent job for NTSC?
I doubt it. Taking an SD image and blowing it up huge on this HD TV...scaled up. I wouldn't think so. I wouldn't use it for SD color correction.
I am not sure I have this HDMI cable to be use in my macbook pro does it comes with it?
You have a DVI port on your MacBook Pro. And they make DVI to HDMI cable adapters I'm sure.

I have to go back to the avid because they work on avid: adding titles, outputting to digibeta and so on
FCP does all this..there are hundreds of editors and facilities doing this daily, on broadcast television shows. I have been doing this for over 2 years.
As far as I know, there is compression-decompression going to tape and back even in fcp, so there IS a little loss.
Where did you hear that? It is incorrect. Outputting via a capture card to digibeta results in no quality loss whatsoever.
If you have an "official" source of information saying otherwise, please do let us know.
I looked at the AJA website and Decklink website and neither of them say that they compress-decompress upon output. If footage is captured via firewire, there is no quality loss, as was done on the Avid...and similarly with FCP. If you capture with a capture card as a different codec, it will compress it into that codec, but depending on the codec, there is little loss, nothing you'd notice. But Avid does the same thing, capturing to a different codec will result in unnoticable loss in quality. Outputting DV to digibeta...there will be a conversion to the digibeta format, that is unavoidable...on AVID as well as FCP. But again, unnoticable.
Can you point to an "official" Avid site that says there is no compression-decompression upon output?
the broadcast safe filter doesnt cut illegal blacks, cuts off only the values that are too high.
Uhm...where did you hear that? It cuts off the top and bottom. Although I don't rely on this solely...I color correct each clip until it falls within range, then add the Broadcast Safe filter, just in case.
FCP handles adding titles and outputting to digibeta, but then you'd need to invest in a capture card. But, since you are in DV land, why not output to a DV tape and then they capture that DV tape...that is a lossless transfer?

  • Logic Studio 2 and Final Cut Studio 2...will they play ball?

I just bought Logic Pro Studio2 and it will not allow me to install STP3 and Compressor 3.5 because of my current copy of FCP Studio 2 that is installed onto the same machine.
What is the work around for this? It would be nice to be able to use the newer software. Could I just uninstall STP2 and Compressor 3 and then attempt the install again with Logic Studio 2 and let it do its thing?
    Thanks guys in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Final Cut Studio is a suite of applications for many video-related tasks. The video editing component of FCS is Final Cut Pro. The main differences between Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express are FCP's ability to handle natively many different types of media (particular HD) and its media manager and color correction tools.
Final Cut Express is functionally similar to FCP, but works with a limited range of video formats, resolutions, etc. Working in FCE is excellent preparation for an eventual move to FCP if your needs grow, but many people find that FCE fulfills their needs at a fraction of the price.

  • DPX - Glue Tools -  Final Cut - Color workflow problem

    Hello all,
I haven't worked much with DPX since the Final Cut Studio 2 update and have now come upon an urgent problem.
I need to import 16bit DPX files into Final Cut, cut them on the timeline, then send to Color and back to FCP after correction.
I've tried this in serveral ways which lead to different problems.
    First approach:
    - Import DPX Sequence via Glue Tools DPX Import of Final Cut Pro 7
    - Drop on timeline
    - Send to Color
    - Opens just fine, color correct, render
    - Send to Final Cut Pro
It switches to Final Cut, but doesn't open the new corrected sequence.
    Second approach:
    - Instead of sending the corrected movie to Final Cut, Export XML
    - Import XML into Final Cut
Again it switches to Final Cut, but I get the following error message (translation from German): The xml transformation has been cancelled due to a serious error.
    Third approach:
Because I don't have much time at the moment I thought I'd just go back to the older workflow of putting the dpx files into a mov container first (I haven't worked much with dpx since FCS2).
So I opened one of the dpx files with QT7 and exported into an uncompressed mov file and already have the first problem.
It seems to cut off all the shadows. When I open the newly exported mov file with QT7 and compare it with the still open dpx sequence it looks even more flat than the dpx files and seems to has lost all shadow detail.
When I drop the mov file into FCP, send to Color and try to get some contrast into the film the shadows look completely crushed.
Sending back to Final Cut works now though.
I've searched through the archive and read the Glue Tools manual again, but nothing I try seems to work.
I use the newest Glue Tools version and the settings are standard. Changing them doesn't seem to influence exporting to a mov file anyway.
Any hint would be much appreciated!

So I opened one of the dpx files with QT7 and exported into an uncompressed mov file and already have the first problem.

It "looks" even more flat and seems to have lost shadow detail?
You are not measuring values with a scope? In other words you're "flying blind.''
Sounds like an RGB/Y'CbCr scaling problem -- Probably the dpx files are full range and the QT is being rendered Linear so the black "0" is actually being mapped to about minus 10 IRE and your white vales won't be able to make it much above 85-90 units. There will also be a gamma difference. If you were scoping these values, they'd be instantly obvious.

  • Final cut color balance key framing - Marker rotating around the center, giving a pink hue

    Hi
I'm currently editing a music video that uses a single shot, but it progresses through many different scenes and lighting conditions. What I'm doing is keyframing the different color corrections so they smoothly transition as the camera pans across different sets.
The problem I'm having is that during the transition from one correction to the next, the marker rises up into the pink area. This gives the transition and awkward and unwanted pink/red hue at the peak of the transition before it settles down into what I wanted.
An example is one scene I keyframe a warm yellow and as it transitions into the scene I keyframe a cool blue. But during the transition, the marker rotates around the middle of the corrected and always goes up into the pink area instead of just simply going from Point A to point B
I'm sure it's just a setting I've clicked as it was working fine before
I'm using the color corrector 3-way
    Final cut pro 7
    Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4

You might try adding edits using the blade tool and dissolving between the color corrections rather than keyframing.   When you keyframe, it's got to get from one color setting to another so the parameters will have to change over time which is what I imagine is happening to you.   Not sure how my scheme would work, but worth a try.

  • Tips&Tricks How to use Final Cut and Color !

    Hello ,
Final Cut - Color - Back to Final Cut
After many days of trying to get this combination working I have found a non-Color-Final Cut way :
1)After you final cut picture edit is locked you have to clean as much as possible the timeline . That means you will have to stick all your image clips to a sigle video timeline and remove all attributes from each clip . Delete all empty video tracks and audio tracks .
Make sure you don't have any gaps in the timeline .
All clips should have the same compression type and frame rates .
2)Send it to Color , grade all the scenes and render it out .
3)Go in finder to the render folder and create an automator work flow adding as source the render folder from color.
Add the find finder option and set it up to look after .mov files .
Add a move finder option and move all the .mov files from Render Color Folder to a new empty folder .
Having done this you should have all the files from the render color folder moved to a new folder .
4)Go back in Final Cut drag&drop all the clips from that new folder on a new timeline , go ahead and check if the new timeline is identical with the old one .
Copy and paste all the attributes from the old sequence to the one from color and re-render in Final Cut . That's it you should be able now to put it back on a tape as a master movie.
In my case Color 1.02 and Final Cut 6.02 I couldn't get the material out from color using another way .
Please post your detailed work flow here and also post if you find this post useful and/or bugs you find about this workflow .
I hope Apple will fix this issue in their next update .

I use external drives as backup. But I don't trust them. And in case of fire or what ever...It is of no use...
But I agree on your comment about DropBox. It would have been the perfect solution though.
    What else is there?
I have a 2TB HD but these projects are huge and still growing - so I have to move my projects to several external drives. So maybe I should just work directly from external drives and skip the partition of the computers main drive? I am thinking of the disadvantage of reducing the total storage of the disk.

  • Workflow/Sending to Final Cut

I have been working on a 720P DVCPRO project. I am not sure what the work flow should be for adding in your color correcting stage.
I have edited my project with speed ramps and different effects within Final Cut 6.02. When I rendered my files from Color after making a color correct, I then sent it back to Final Cut.
Once I opened the timeline that color added to my final cut project, All of my transitions were replaced with straight cuts. Also the speed ramps were gone.
Should this be expected? If so how should I be working on the color correcting stage?
What is the best way to do this?
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Jesse

Preparing Your Sequence for Color Correction
Before you bring your project to me for color correction, there are a few things you can do to prepare your project in so we can get started more quickly, saving yourself some money in the process. On the other hand, if you're not comfortable going through any of these steps, I can do them prior to the actual color correction session.
Move All Clips That Aren’t Being Composited to Track V1
Editors often use multiple tracks of video to assemble scenes, taking advantage of the track ordering rules in Final Cut Pro to determine which clips are currently visible. On the other hand, it’s faster, easier, and less ambiguous for the colorist (me) to navigate and work on a project that has all its clips on a single video track.
For this reason, please move all video clips that aren’t superimposed as part of a compositing operation down to track V1, as shown in the following screenshots. If two or more clips are superimposed as an effect, by all means leave it be, and I can color correct each layer as necessary.
    Unprepared Timeline Prepared Timeline
Tip—if you hold the Shift key down while you drag clips up and down in the Timeline, you'll lock their position in time so you don't inadvertently move the clips out of sync with the audio. Furthermore, if you don't want to change the track order of audio items that are linked to the video clips you're moving, you can turn off Linked Selection. This lets you move video items without also moving their audio.
Remove All Non-Essential Filters From the Clips in your Sequence
It's often difficult for me to distinguish between temporary effects that I'll need to replace, and permanent effects that you want to preserve. For this reason, if you've created any temporary color corrections during the offline phase of your edit, please remove these from your sequence before bringing it in.
If you feel that these filters are a useful reference for the direction you'll want me to take, then make a duplicate of your edited sequence to back it up before you start cleaning it up, and name it "Sequence Name- Reference Copy." That way, I can always open up the original state of your program to take a look at what was done previously.
Please note, I'm only talking about color corrections that were done during the offline edit. It's not necessary to remove every filter in your program. By all means, retain any and all filters that are currently used to create effects that are integral to your program.
Place Timeline Markers at Scene Beginnings, Effects, and Problem Areas
A completely optional step, but one that can save time during the session, is to take the time to place Timeline markers with scene names or numbers at the first edit of each scene in your project. This makes navigation extremely fast, and removes any ambiguity when you ask me to go to a particular scene.
Also, if there are effects shots in the project, either done in Final Cut or created in another application, please place markers to identify these as well named "FX - Description" in the Timeline for each effect.
Lastly, if there are problem shots or scenes that you know will need special attention, place markers named "Problem - Name Of Problem" in the Timeline for each issue in the sequence. This speeds the session, and also provides me with some guidance in unsupervised sessions.
Bring Third Party Filters That Are Used in the Project
If your project uses third party FXscript filters that you've installed for use with Final Cut Pro, those are saved along with the project file. On the other hand, if your project uses third party After Effects or FxPlug filters (such as those used by Motion), you will need to bring those filters to me along with your other project and media files.
Tip—If you have the time, it's often helpful if you can place a marker in the Timeline (not in the clip) calling such effects to my attention.
Bring All Fonts Used by Text Generators, LiveType, and Motion Project Titles
While most color-correction sessions don't involve motion graphics work (although some do), it's still good for me to be able to view your project as it's supposed to appear. The color and placement of superimposed titles sometimes necessitates changes to the color correction of the clip underneath. Also, if you need me to render a version of your program that includes the titles, I'll need to have the fonts.
Tip—After color correction, I recommend having rendering at least one version of your program as a textless master. This lets you redo your titles at any time without having to re-render the entire program.
Preparing Your Media for Color Correction
If your project and all its media fits on a single portable hard drive, it may not be necessary to use the media manager, you can just copy all your files and folders to the hard drive. If it doesn't, it's a good idea to consolidate your project's media in order to make it more portable.
    Media Manage Your Project
It's best to eliminate unused media to save drive space (especially if you’ll be recapturing uncompressed media), and consolidate all the source media used by your project into a single directory for easy transport and relinking. This is also a good step to take prior to recapturing your media, if necessary.
The safest way to do this using the Media Manager is to use the following options:
    1. Which option you choose from the "media referenced by selected sequence" pop-up menu depends on whether or not your source media needs to be recaptured.
    * If your media is already at its highest quality and you don't need to recapture it, then choose Copy. This safely duplicates the media used by your project onto another hard drive (which you choose using the Browse button in the Media Destination section near the bottom of this window), while leaving your original media untouched.
    * If your media needs to be recaptured (see the next section), then choose Create Offline. This creates an offline version of your sequence, ready for the recapture process.
    2. Turn off Include master clips outside selection. This saves space.
    3. Turn on Delete unused media from selected sequence.
    4. Turn on Use Handles, leaving the handles duration field at the default of 1 second, just in case you need any last-minute editorial tweaks.
    5. Turn on Duplicate selected sequence and place into a new project. This further protects you by saving all changes to a duplicate project file, which is also saved in the directory you choose with the Browse button.
    6. Turn off Include affiliate clips outside selection. This saves more space.
    7. If this is a multi-camera edit, turn off Include nonactive multiclip angles if you've locked your edit. This will significantly reduce the amount of hard drive space you need to transport your project.
    8. If you're using the Copy option, click the Browse button to choose the external hard drive to which you want to copy the media.
The following screenshot shows the Media Manager set up to copy preexisting media.
    Media Manager Setup
Once you've media managed your project and copied all the files to your portable hard drive, it's a good idea to unmount the hard drive containing the original media, and then try opening up the newly copied project and media from your portable hard drive. This lets you check to make sure you've got everything, and that all the files relink to the project properly.
Recapture Your Source Media (If Necessary) at the Highest Quality
For the best results, it’s essential to use media that has been captured at the highest possible quality. If you’re following an offline/online workflow where you captured the source media at low quality in order to save hard drive space, you’ll need to recapture that media at its highest original quality. This is not to say that you need to recapture everything using the 10-bit Uncompressed 4:2:2 codec if it was originally shot using a compressed format.
For example, if you’re working on a program that was shot on NTSC DV tape but that was originally captured and edited with the OfflineRT format, you need only recapture the source media at its original resolution and format using the DV/DVCPRO - NTSC codec. Likewise, DVCPRO 50, HDV, DVCPRO HD, IMX, and HDCAM HD (35 Mb/sec VBR) are all suitable video formats for beginning the color correction process using their native codecs.
Here's why. In either Final Cut Pro or Color, image data from supported compressed formats is decompressed at the beginning of the image processing pipeline, with all the internal image processing performed on uncompressed data. During rendering, the corrected, internally uncompressed image can be written straight to disk as an uncompressed file. In essence, the rendering process upconverts your program at the same time it processes your color corrections, preserving maximum image quality.
On the other hand, if you’re working with media that's in an analog or digital mastering format such as Betacam SP, Digital Betacam, or D-5, you’ll want to capture it using the 10-bit Uncompressed 4:2:2 codec if you want your media to be completely uncompressed. On the other hand, to save hard drive space you can now capture your media using Apple's new mastering-quality compressed codecs; ProRes 422 is suitable for capturing and mastering standard definition media, while ProRes 422 (HQ) is suitable for high-definition media.
Render Specific Effects as Self-Contained QuickTime Clips (optional)
(This step pertains only to preparing for a Color session)
If we've discussed your program in advance and you know for a fact that it will be corrected using Color, there's another optional step you can perform to prep your project. Certain types of clips and effects in Final Cut Pro sequences are not supported directly inside of Color, including:
    * Still images (such as .tiff and .jpg files with durations greater then one frame)
    * Final Cut Pro freeze frame clips
    * Final Cut Pro generators
    * Motion project files edited into the Timeline
    * LiveType project files edited into the Timeline
    * FXScript and FxPlug filters (ignored by Color)
    * Variable speed effects (linear speed effects like 50% and 200% are fine)
Most of these effects are simply ignored by Color, leaving offline clips in the Color timeline. However, unless they're titles or superimposition effects, usually these clips need to be color corrected along with the rest of the program. For the smoothest Final Cut Pro to Color round trip, it's usually best to render (export) such effects as self-contained QuickTime files, then import them back into your project and edit them back into your Final Cut Pro project to replace the original effect clip in your project.
If you have any questions about this process, don't worry about it. This is a preparatory step that I can take care of. However, if you know what you're doing and you'd like to take care of this yourself, the following is a good workflow:
    1. Drag the unsupported clip to track V2 (see 1 in illustration).
    2. Solo the auto-select control for track V2 by Option-clicking it (see 2 in illustration).
    3. Move the playhead to that clip, and mark the clip for export by pressing X. This sets the sequence In and Out points to match those of the clip (see 3 in illustration).Rendering Unsupported Clips
    4. Choose File > Export > QuickTime Movie...
    5. When the Save window appears, choose Custom from the Setting pop-up.
    6. When the Sequence Preset Editor window appears, choose 10-bit Uncompressed 4:2:2 from the Compressor pop-up menu in the QuickTime Video Settings section, then click OK (despite the window's name, this does not change the original sequence settings).
    7. In the Save window, choose a name and location for the new media file, and click Save.
    8. When it finishes rendering, reimport the new QuickTime movie back into your project. It's helpful to create a new bin in which to store all of your prerendered clips.
    9. Lastly, edit the rendered clip into the gap on track V1 underneath the original clip on track V2.Preparing Sequence 02
After you've rendered all of the unsupported clips in your sequence, you can disable the original superimposed clips in track V2, but leaving them in your sequence makes it easier to locate and rework these effects should you decide you ever need to make a change. Now that the effect has been turned into a QuickTime movie, it can be graded in Color just like any other clip.
Note: Don't forget to bring these rendered clips along with all the other media for your project.
    Rendering Speed Effects
Rendering speed effects works a little differently. If you have Final Cut Studio 2, you have the option of rendering clips with linear or variable speed effects in higher quality by sending all such clips to Motion to render using Motion's adaptive image analysis to create smooth slow motion effects. This is highly recommended.

  • How to keyframe color-correction effects.

I have seen the odd question bemoaning the inability of FCP X to keyframe color-corrections but as I have no interest in doing such things I have paid no attention.
However, I discovered in a Ken Stone article that color corrections can be keyframed using a free filter from Ripple Training.
The RT tutorial and a link to the filter can be found here:-
    http://www.rippletraining.com/using-the-rt-color-balance-effect-in-final-cut-pro -x.html
Apologies if almost everyone else already knows this, but I am sure there will be somebody (like me) who doesn't.
The original Ken Stone article on all types of FCP X keyframing is here:-
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_x_keyframing_effects_stone.html

One way to 'keyframe' colour correction with FCP X is to add the clip to the storyline, then move the playhead back to the beginning of that clip and use 'Q' in the Event Browser to add the same clip again as a connected clip, above the original.
Colour correct one of the clips, then keyframe the opacity of one of them to effect the change you want.

  • Final Cut pro refuses to open

For some reason, after the first time I quit out of Final Cut Pro (6), it has refused to open when I click on it. It shows its loading screen but then simply quits afterwards. Am I simply missing something? I have FInal Cut Studio 2 and all the other programs are running correctly, just not Final Cut Pro.

Here's the old school way to trash preferences and repair permissions.
    Close Final Cut Pro.
    Go to: Users/your user name/Library/Preferences.
    Drag, "com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist" to the trash.
Scroll down to the Final Cut Pro User Settings folder.
Drag, "Final Cut Pro 6 Preferences" to the trash.
Drag, "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" to the trash
Drag, "Final Cut Pro POA Cache" to the trash.
    Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    Select your system disk
Click on the Repair Permissions button
Wait for the permissions to be repaired
    Restart your computer
    FYI
Trashing preferences tends to fix some odd behavior, and will be like bringing FCP back to the first time you opened it. You will have to reset scratch disk etc. once you do this.
