Color flicker? Florescent lights? Viewer to Canvas problem?

Hello everyone,
I shot on a Sony HZ5u,
in Smooth Slow Record,
HDV1080i, 60i
inside a semi truck bay under fluorescent lighting (I think).
In both the Viewer and Canvas there is a frame to frame shift in White Balance hue
from cyan to magenta.
The issue does not occur outside the bay, so I'm guessing it's due to lighting.
Now my problem is that the visibility of this is more noticeable in the Canvas
where there is an extreme flicker. It hurts my eyes. It is very rapid.
*Is there a reason why it gets worse in the canvas? How can I fix this?
It is not my monitors, I moved both windows over to each monitor and it's consistent.
And for anyone who knows, why does this camera, and other cameras, react so drastically to normal fluorescent lighting?
I have had earlier issues where the color did not flicker but rolled, like a tv static roll, slowly and constantly.
Thank you for ANY help!
Landon S.

No it's the other way around.
If you shot at 60i/30fps with today's cameras you may not have a problem, even with the old magnetic ballasts with a florescent bulb you're really not at odds with the AC cycle at 30fps. It's when you shot slo-mo and change the frame rate to something that's not divisible into 60Hz that you get in trouble.
Of course all that changes if the the AC current isn't stable.
There are little tricks like not using auto white balance, and using proper shutter speeds. I'm not much of a shooter, I've just come across the problem before and understand the cause. I produced a film shoot in a newsroom once where we had to re-light the whole room and bag the florescent lights.
We ran tests, it's smart to run tests. If you shoot in that place again I would bring in your own lights.

I'm new to Final Cut Studio and I'm using academic version, but when i go through the dvd tutorial editing, I can't see my finished product in the canvas and this makes it impossible to edit. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it so much.

    Welcome to the forum!
Make sure your Canvas window is set to RGB, and also that it isn't in Wireframe mode.

  • Color settings in viewer and canvas?

Have been experimenting with some custom presets of the Canon XH A1.
After importing in FCP the footage seemed very colorful -- mostly much warmer.
Played the same clips in quicktime and they looked completely different, much more nuanced, natural and as intended.
Is there a way to change the color settings of the viewer and the canvas in FCP?
    thanks

#49 - Quicktime movie lighter than what I see in FCP.
Shane's Stock Answer #49 - Why is the Quicktime Movie I made much lighter than what I see in my timeline in FCP?
Because it is designed to be bright enough to be seen on most monitors, some that might be too dark. But, if you want to see the same image you see in your FCP timeline, just open Quicktime, and in the Quicktime Player's preferences window under the General tab you can choose to Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility.

  • Color profile for Viewer and Canvas?

I've noticed that the color of the video in the FCPro 4.5 Viewer and Canvas looks absolutely nothing like the color when I output to DVD or QuickTime movie. (The video in FCPro seems to be much darker.) Is there a way to make the Viewer and Canvas look more analagous to what I'm going to get on final output?
    Thanks.

Nope. Computer monitors colors have such a wide range that they are very unreliable. This is why it is best to hook up a TV, or better yet a properly calibrated NTSC Monitor (the latter only if you are producing professional video).
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Color Corrector's Frame Viewer Split Not Showing Up On External Monitor

    Kind've a long title - sorry - but . . . here's my question:
Why am I not able to see the Frame Viewer's split on my external monitor?
A further, more detailed explanation of the problem:
I recently purchased Ripple Training's Color Correction with Andrew Balis. It's very, very imformative and I think will help a lot when it comes time to begin color correcting the feature I'm working on. The section I'm on shows the Frame Viewer tab in the Tool Bench window that presents itself when one opens Color Correction under the Arrange area. In other words, Arrange>Color Correction sets up your windows for color correcting with your Viewer, Canvas, and Tool Bench windows aligned from left to right. When one opens up the 3 Way Color Corrector on a clip and makes a change in the clip, the Frame Viewer tab in the Tool Bench window will show a split screen where on one side you'll have your clip with the color correction you just did, and the other side un-color corrected. Isn't this (split) image supposed to show up in your external monitor just as the images in the Canvas and the Viewer?
That doesn't seem to be happening on my external monitor.
I'm not sure if this problem/issue I'm having is related to the muticlipl issue I posted in an earlier thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1330596&tstart=0
    perhaps.
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Javier Calderon

Ahhh, Shane. So it's as simple as that? So then there's nothing wrong with my setup or my external monitor? FCP's just not designed to show the Tool Bench's Frame Viewer image in your external monitor? Wow . . . Well that answers that then I guess. And you're right . . . that IS indeed kind've lame . . .
    Thanks.
    Javier
. . . um . . . doesn't that kind've defeat the purpose of proper color correction then (regarding the Tool Bench's Frame Viewer anyway)? If the only place you can see your color corrected Frame Viewer split images is on a monitor that's NOT suited for color correction? Anyway . . . just a thought . . .

  • Different result in frame viewer and canvas

I´m doing some color correction with the 3 way CC tool and i´m having troubles with Frame Viewer: the results are not the same in the Canvas and Frame Viewer. The colors in Frame Viewer are a little bit more saturated and they are also a bit darker.
I figured out that it happens in a lot of different configurations (Mac Pro, Imac and macbook Pro) but just with Snow Leopard.
This problem doesn't exist in Tiger and i haven't the opportunity to test it with leopard.
I found a topic in this forum support, where a guy had the same problem, he solved with the excess luma command, but it doesn't make sense, infact I still have this problem.
I think that this is a software problem and also quite big, btw what i want to know is, which reference is more accurate?
    Time Viewer or canvas?

    Neither.
FCP is showing you a low res proxy of the image. Final Cut Pro does this because it is about concentrating on the flow of your story, not color fidelity. That is less demanding on the CPU.
To color correct accurately, your system needs to be connected to a calibrated external video monitor (or at the vey least, an excellent TV) fed by a qualified capture card such as those from AJA, Black Magic or Matrox.

  • Viewer and Canvas are whacked

FCP 5.0.3 works great on my iMac G4 (Flat panel) 15"
So, I get a shiny new 17" Powerbook (brand new 120GB/DDR2 model) - spend 2.5 hours installing FinalCut Studio and begin moving projects over.
Low and behold - I capture some video in standard DV (4.3) and all goes well. BUT, when I try to view it in either the Viewer or drop it into the timeline and look at it in the Canvass - I get audio - but the video is STUCK.
If I click elsewhere in the timeline (viewer and canvass) - I see the new frame. This only works on the first click. I try to play or scrub - I hear audio, but the video is stuck on that or the first frame.
The same happens with imported video. All video I am dealing with are FCP native - either exported from FCP or captured through FCP.
I have even carefully compared my settings (user, system and AV Devices) with those settings on my iMac.
    Only differences between machines is:
    iMac = 1GB RAM/160GB HDD and 15" LCD Screen (1440x900/millions/iMac profile)
Powerbook = 512MB RAM (New RAM not yet available) / 120GB HDD/17" LCD screen (1680x1050/millions/color lcd profile)
Both systems have the same OSX Tiger and FCS updates.
GAWD - any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
    Kind rgards

SHEESH - I found my own answer after some real experimenting.
BTW - I intend to crank this thing to 2GB - when the RAM becomes available to buy (not available, yet, tho - channel trickle is slow)
    ANYWAY -
I found that external video was playing great. So I opened the same project on both computers and went through the menus ONE-BY-ONE to find the difference.
Well - I found the answer.
    RECAP:
Video was not playing in viewer or canvas when scrubbed to played. Just a frozen frame.
HOWEVER, the video was playing fine externally.
I don't know if this is how it is supposed to work, but this setting seemed to cause the problem:
Make the timeline the active window.
Select: VIEW>EXTERNAL VIDEO>OFF - this fixed the problem. It was set to ALL FRAMES - which seemed to cause the problem.
There - answer discovered for anyone else who may run into this.
And - thank you, Studio X for your incredibly fast reply. Though I may not have explained the problem clearly as your answer was tried before I posted (it also is the answer to a few other problems I've seen in other posts)
    Kind regards, All.

  • Help with partial image loss from Viewer to Canvas

Hi--I'm brand new to FCP and would really appreciate any help with my problem. I'm creating 2 second video clips composed of four still images (15 frames...or 500ms each) laid back to back, then rendered. Very simple, I know. The individual images are tiff files that look great in the FCP Viewer. But in the Canvas, part of the image is missing. Specifically, in the center of each image there should be a + sign, about 1cm square. This + should remain constant thoughout the short movie, while the items around it vary (from image to image). (This is a psychology experiment, and the center + is a fixation cross.) The problem is that in the Viewer the + sign is intact, but in the Canvas (and the resulting rendered video), only the vertical bar of the + is present! This is true for every individual tiff, and for the resulting movie. The items around the fixation cross are fine. My question is WHY on earth does the central horizontal bar get "lost" between the Viewer and the Canvas? I've read the manuals, but obviously I've got something set wrong. Also, there is a considerable overall reduction in quality between the viewer and canvas, even though I'm trying my best to maximize video quality. Everything looks a bit blurry. Truly, all ideas are welcome. Sorry if it's obvious. Thanks.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

steve, i'm viewing on my 23" cinema screen. i read up on quality and know that this is a no-no; that i should only judge quality when viewing on an ntsc monitor or good tv. the problem is that i'll ultimately be displaying these videos on my Dell LCD, so i've got to maximize what i've got. thanks to the discussion boards i have a short list of things to try now. thanks!

  • FCE 4: Picture in Viewer and Canvas is too small

I'm still learning but the picture in my Viewer and Canvas don't show very well. They show up with 2 grey bars on the left and right of the picture. Above the picture it shows 71% instead of 100%. When I put to 100% the picture will be zoomed very big. I have no idea where's the problem but there must be something very wrong. Before i had crosslines in the viewer but this problem is solved. But how do i get the picture back to fullsize in the Viewer and Canvas?

Tom's right, if there isn't enough room for FCE to display the image full size in the window it scales it to fit. Make the windows larger, (for example put it on compositing view under window arrangement), and then choose scale to fit for each of the images.

  • FCP 7, viewer and canvas window is dark in lion

    How to fix this problem???

  • Canvas problem FCP4.5

I can't figure out why the picture fills up the viewer (setting is automatically 77%) and is a small picture in the canvas (setting is 50%). The canvas view's next step up is 100% and that is too much which distorts the picture. In the Pro Training tutorial I bought for this program, the picture filled both the viewer and canvas nicely. Did I change a setting somewhere along the line that I can't find?

  • Viewer in canvas not viewable in timeline!

I have a problem concerning the viewer in canvas. When I click in a sequnez on the timeline, the viewer is still black with no picture.
    What should I do?

  • FCP 7 - I can hear audio but not see the footage in the viewer or canvas

Ive had a few problems with my final cut. Im working off my laptop with a monitor. My immediate issue is that I have been editing fine this morning and then all of a sudden I could hear the audio for my clips but I can't see the footage in the viewer or the canvas. I can double clip on each clip individually and see what the footage is however. I've shut my computer down a few times and its not fixing itself. Also a lot lately when I sit down to do some editing the footage flickers on one clip and wont proceed to the next clips footage but I can still hear the sound. I would LOVE some help with this if anyone knows whats going on? Sascha

#15 White or Black Canvas or Viewer
Shane's Stock Answer #15:  White or Black Canvas or Viewer
Make sure the canvas or viewer are selected then go to VIEW>CHANNELS and set it to RGB.   It might be set to ALPHA.
    OR...
Click on the drop down menu above the Viewer or Canvas and make sure that you are on IMAGE or IMAGE + WIREFRAME.

  • Cant see any video only white screens in Viewer and Canvas

I dont know if anyone has encountered this figured out how to resolve it yet. In FCP 7 on Snow Leopard when i drag a clip into viewer or try to edit in the Canvas all i see is a white screen. The title safe lines and wireframe show up when i turn these on and off, but no video. I occasionally get a solarized image in the Canvas. the time code progresses, but nothing in either window.
    Thanks for any insights.

Thanks for all the suggestions, including links back to earlier discussions. This did shed some light, (and kicked me to be more explicit), when reviewing an earlier question on the same issue, but stating that this happened on an external Dell 2408 monitor...which is what I am using to edit. When i open the MBP and remove the video miniport cable and try to play on the laptop display, all is well, I can see video in both Viewer and Canvas. When i plug the monitor back in and drag these windows over to the monitor (cant move the FCP application wholesale) they also play fine. When i close the MBP, wait and refire it up with mouse or keyboard...I see video in both, but when i play either one the image jumps back and forth, cycling from one frame and back...while the time code advances and the audio track does too.

  • Removing Florescent Light Noise "Hum" from Audio Tracks using FCEHD

I have some clips taken under florescent lighting where the hum was discernable even during the sound check. (I was using external Electro Voice hypercardiod XLR mikes plugged into my Sony DCRVX2100, powered through a surge protector, monitoring the audio with Bose QC2 headphones). Using the same camera, cables, and mikes under incandescent lighting that day was fine - no hum.
Attempting to filter out the hum using the FCE Hum filter wasn't dramatically effective, even with repeated tests establishing that using a frequency of 60 hz, a Q of 40, a gain of -48, and the 1st and 3rd harmonics provided the most benefit.
Additionally I tried again with the FCE 31 band EQ filter, anticipating that the 50 hz and 60 hz filters would provide very specific improvements. Also tried were the LowPass Filter and the 3 band EQ.
I'd like to clean up the otherwise fine audio - any suggestions? I am considering buying a filtered power conditioner as I know that some of the problem can be "dirty" electricity resulting from the ballast of the florescent lighting.
Also, I noted that the numeric values shown for the gain using the FCE 31 band EQ filter oftentimes lagged behind the setting of the slider: returning the slider to the middle "0" position frequently didn't change the previous value of the gain shown. Is this another indication that I should just upgrade from my PowerBook G4 with 2 Gig of RAM?
    Thanks!
    James Mackay

    Hello Jim,
And welcome to the Final Cut Express forum.
You are correct that the ballast generates the hum. Power conditioning is probably not going to reduce or eliminate it, because the old ballasts are magnetic. The only way I found to eliminate fluorescent noise at the source is to replace the ballast with an electronic one or replace the entire fixture with a T8 unit (they use electronic ballasts).
Removing that hum probably can't be done in FCE. Sound Soap can probably do it however, with it's ability to +learn noise+ and then remove that specific audio. The regular Sound Soap works as a plugin for Final Cut, which enables you to apply it within FCE.
At present there is also an 'SE' version available at 50% off however it only works in standalone mode, which means you would have to export the audio track from FCE, clean it and then re-import back into FCE.
