Color wheel showing again with mail & other applications

Please note I am a MAC user and not anything close to an "experienced" user - I can do what I need to on my MAC.  Any help/suggestions appreciated.
From another post I gathered I should check my console at the exact time the "wheel" showed up and copy that line of data here - so this is what I found:
"3/30/15 4:27:44.437 PM AppleIDAuthAgent[361]: SERVER checkAccount: Apple ID "go...ie@?????.???" doesn't have a password; no next action. (checkAccountAndDetermineNextAction()/AppleIDAuthenticationImpl.cpp #1681) client 296
3/30/15 4:27:44.627 PM Mail[274]: CoreText CopyFontsForRequest received mig IPC error (FFFFFFFFFFFFFECC) from font server
3/30/15 4:27:44.628 PM Mail[274]: CoreText CopyFontsForRequest received mig IPC error (FFFFFFFFFFFFFECC) from font server"
This has been happening a lot lately (again).  I also ran Etrecheck and here are those results:
Problem description:
Mail running super slow, other programs hanging up

Greetings ECJulie,
I understand your are experiencing slowness while using your Mac. The following articles may provide a solution:
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac runs slowly
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has easily available. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Memory. See the help that came with the app to see its system requirements.
To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click Memory, then click Memory Upgrade Instructions in the lower-left corner. documentation that came with the app to its system requirements.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Overview.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Displays. The name of the graphics card in your computer is displayed in the middle of the window.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, move files to another disk, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If you have problems with your disk, use Disk Utility to verify and try and fix any issues.
Use Activity Monitor to see if a particular app or activity is making a large demand on your Mac.
OS X Yosemite: If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly
There are several suggestions to try.
If the app is frozen, force quit the app. Click the app’s window, then choose Apple menu > Force Quit. You can also press Option-Command (⌘)-Esc, select the app, then click Force Quit.
When you force an app to quit, you may lose unsaved changes.
If the app quit, reopen it by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears.
Restart your Mac. For more information, see Restart your Mac.
Read the app’s documentation to check if it’s compatible with your version of OS X.
Open another file in the app. There may be a problem with the original file.
Check for updates to your software.
Disconnect any peripheral devices you just connected (for example, a printer). They may not be compatible with your version of OS X.
Uninstall any app plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers.
If you recently updated the app or OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you installed may no longer be compatible.
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These tools can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
Restart your Mac in safe mode. For more information, see Restart your Mac in safe mode.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
Best,

Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!

7gb of free disc space is required to install Lion.  Read this about how to free up disc space: http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html.  Also, advice on how to speed up your mac: http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac

Hello, I'm pretty sure my fan on my 2009 mac book pro has stopped running. Would this cause the computer to slow down and take for ever to boot up and show the color wheel every time I select an application ? how involved to replace fan ? cost ?
    thanks

Not directly, but if the CPU overheats because of incompatible software, that would cause slowdowns. Do not allow the computer to run if the fan is not working unless you wish to fry your motherboard. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • I set up iCloud on my iMac with OS version 10.6.8 but I'm not able to have the icon show on my Dock with the other application icons. What do I do?

I set up iCloud on my iMac with OS version 10.6.8 but I'm not able to have the iCloud icon show in my Dock with the other application icons. What can I do? Is it because iCloud is not part of the 10.6.8 version? I clicked System Preferences and I saw MobileMe and no iCloud.

Thanks for your reply! Would my IMac be able to support the Mavericks (10.9) considering that I bought it in June 2011? Not sure if that even matters.

    Hi scotty2hotty1972,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has some steps you can try if iTunes isn't recognizing your optical drive:

  • I'm running Lion on a Late 2008 MacBook Air.  With no other applications running, I can no longer Check for Software Updates.  It gets abut half way through the checking process and then freezes.  The MBA passes Disk Utility. Thoughts?

How long do you leave it?
Mine can sometimes sit for quite a while (maybe 10 minutes??) before it finally finishes.
You could look at the relevant logs via Console (Utilities folder) to see if Software Update is complaining about anything.

  • Color Wheel Lockup in Mac Mail

The last thing I remember doing when Mac Mail was working correctly was (shudder) running a Microsoft Office Upgrade just before leaving work yesterday. I have been banging my head against a wall all day trying to figure out why my Mac Mail now goes into "Color Wheel Lockup" making it impossible for anything else to happen except a "hard shutdown" (shudder again).
What is going on? Or have I just learned the lesson I preach to everyone else of Never Running A Microsoft Update??

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Iphoto will not open only color wheel shows how can i open it.

My iphoto will not open only the color wheel pops up, how can I open my iphoto?

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • When saving out transparent web pngs, they are showing up 'dirty' in other applications (like Gimp). Help?

I've linked one of the images in question; a 16x16 px icon for a settings page we're using. When this image is opened in another program (Gimp, in this case- the dev team does not have Photoshop), they are finding 'dirty pixels'. Specifically, if you are looking at the image, just above the base row of blue, where it should be white, it's showing up as a 10% transparent blue row all the way across. This does not appear in Photoshop, nor can I remove this area by deleting, etc.
I assume the issue is either how it's being saved out, in which case, is there a best way of saving out small transparent web images? Or, the issue is with Gimp (which I would be happy with), I am just not familiar with the application to know. Or, I am just creating the images wrong.
    Thanks!

This what i see in gimp
Maybe this is what they talking about, that there is some blue areas that should not be there, yet are after filling in the alpha channel (transparency channel in photoshop)
Same as doing Layer>Layer Mask>From Transparency in photoshop.
    Upon opening in gimp
After filling in the alpha (transparency) channel
Which version of photoshop and operating system did you use?
When i tried several different variations in photoshop cc 2014.1, i always had visible pixels that shouldn't have been there after saving as a png
Doing the same in photoshop 6 yielded the expected results of what was there before, was there after saving and no more.

I did what you said and I don't see all those weird messages anymore, but we switched over our MX records today to our mail server in hopes that it would all work and now no one can get their mail. I can log into the mail server no problem via IMAP, but to send messages is not working. And those using POP don't seem to work at all. Even to send messages the Server is rejecting saying that my messages isn't addresed right. Which it is. I can't even send something to myself. I'm trying not to be frustrated with this thing. I'm just not sure what to do since we have a whole bunch of people needing mail and it doesn't seem to be working and I'm not a mail server expert. Any help would be appreciated.

  • My Language Bar isn't showing up when I have Firefox active, although it shows up fine in other applications and my desktop. Any ideas?

I noticed a couple days ago that my language bar wasn't showing up when I had Firefox active. At first I thought it was the bar in its entirety, but when I'm on the desktop, or even in AIM, the language bar still shows. I'm constantly switching between typing in English and Japanese, so I need this function. I'm stuck currently typing it elsewhere and pasting it into the browser, which is very time consuming. Does anyone have any ideas as to why it's doing this? Thank you.

I have the Language bar as part of the taskbar, and I have Firefox just as a normal window. It's actually showing up today, which is strange because I've been moving my computer around, so it's been on and off three times today, and this is the first time it's here.

  • Skype crashes (along with any other application) w...

Alrighty. So, before 7.0 came out, whenever I accessed my camera from any application, that application crashed. (Sadly, this also included my LoginUI.exe and occasionally locked up my computer, forcing me to restart) So, today I've seen from my friends' screen the new 7.0, and I just updated. Whenever Skype opens up, it runs for 1 or 2 seconds then crashes. The only explanation for that is that Skype keeps trying to access my webcam/camera. Any solution to this? Oh, and I've included my DxDiag report below.

Skype is crashing when trying to access the FaceRig application (FaceRigVirtualCam.ax).

Uninstalling this faulty application may rectify the issue.
If you want to stop Skype from trying to access any video capture device then you can try this:

  • Using "Enter Time machine" with Mail does not show 'restore' tab

I recently upgraded to 10.5.6 and while in Mail, I used the menu 'enter time machine' and instead of the familiar animation, the preview pane of the mail showed the message "click restore to restore your mailbox 'x'" BUT THERE WAS NO restore tab!
I only had my original desktop background with the Mail preview panel in the center.
I took a screen shot but don't see a way to attach images like on other boards.
In all other applications, 'enter time machine' would switch me to finder and go through that great time machine animation with the 'restore''now' and 'cancel' tabs at the bottom.
Anyone know why this has happened?

    Hi Barry,
Sorry to confuse anyone. What I meant was that with Mail.app in front or focus, if I click on the TM icon in the dock OR if I use the menu bar TM icon and from the pull down if I choose 'enter time machine' Then all that happens is the Mail window shrinks a bit, the dock disappears, in the Mail window, in the preview panel there is a grey message saying 'click restore if you want to recover your inbox' if I highlight another folder or mailbox I created it says 'click to restore that mailbox'
But there is no "RESTORE" to click anywhere. I can see my desktop background and the icons of files on my desktop. It looks as if Mail window shrunk a bit onto my desktop with no dock. Hope that gives you an idea.
With any other application as focus, when I click on TM icon in dock or the drop down menu from menu bar, it switches to finder, then goes through that breathtaking animation of the whole desktop dropping down and the finder window trailing into infinity.
