Colors locked in Photoshop Elements 6

Colors locked in Photoshop Elements 6
I created a 1 layer TIFF file in Photoshop Elements 6 with text only which was distorted then flattened. The result was grey text on a white background. The problem is I can't change the color of the gray text.
I select the Foreground color icon on the tool bar at the left side, then I get the color pallet window, but no matter what color I select the Foreground color icon can only be gray or white (if I chose a lighter color).
Somehow 24 bits worth of color choices are converted to 1 bit (gray or white), and there's no obvious controls to change this, no F1 help guides and no obvious knowledgebase or forum comments. Does the file format, which is unknown to me, govern Photoshop operations (?), which would of course make absolutely no sense even if it were true, because that should only be an output formatting decision.
Thanks for any comment or reference.

Thank you that worked perfectly.

    Hi
I have a problem with color prints from photoshop elements 12. The pictures are too light and with strange colors. I have a Canon pixma mg615I0 printer and use mac os X yosemite. The pictures are taken with a coanon eos 550d in the color space sRGB. I have followed adobes recommendations and have tried both letting the printer respektive photoshop manage the colors. But nothing works. I see that there are different opinions about which is best to do so I tried both. I have the latest printer driver installed. Can anyone help me with this?

    Do the following:
Print a test page from the printer. Perhaps the print head needs cleaning via its maintenance facility.
Let the printer manage colors, not PSE
    Calibrate the monitor

  • Color management in Photoshop Elements...

    Hello all
I know this is an Apple forum, but I also know many of you use Photoshop Elements as well, and I think there is a wealth information here.
So, I am very perplexed about something in PSE. I currently have PSE3 for Mac (although the version should not matter for my question).
My question has to do with the color settings in PSE preferences. As you know, one can choose No Color Mgt., Limited Color Mgt. = sRGB, or Full Color Mgt. = Adobe RGB. When I choose full color mgt., overall tones are VERY red. When choosing limited color mgt., colors are slightly red, and no color mgt., colors are fairly neutral. This is all by default. I know how to clean up the color casts, but for general printing, where should I be? I typically only print 4X6 or occasionally 8X10, nothing professionally. When printing, what is the ideal, or preferred Source Space? I have found that if the source space is the same as how the image is tagged, things look pretty good. I also keep the Print Space set to my monitor settings which is the iMac profile. I suppose the issue is that I do not want to have to constantly correct the reddish tones for every photo I manipulate in PSE, although I typically do.
So my basic question is this: What settings are you using in the PSE print dialog box that give you the best looking prints, i.e., source space, print space? How do you color manage you photos? And, what are your color settings in preferences?
    Many thanks in advance…

    mikwen:
If you compare the sRGB and Adobe RGB color profiles with ColorSync Utility you'll see that the Adobe profile is much wider. I understand it is used for high end CMYK printing or similar. The Adobe profile gives me a much darker onscreen image. Haven't printed with it in quite a while so don't remember what the output was.
Apple uses the sRGB profile in their books and other printed products. So I've setup PSE to use the sRGB profile and set my monitor to sRGB but with a 2.2 gamma. That seems to work for me.
I don't know which camera you have or what color profile it embeds but the Canon's, and others, have a camera profile that is very close to the sRGB. If you installed the software that came with your camera it probably added the camera's profile to the system and you can view it with ColorSync Utility.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Selective Color control in Photoshop Elements?

I am considering a purchase of Photoshop Elements for Mac. I am familiar with Photoshop 5.5 and I often use the Selective Color feature found in the Image menu (Image:Adjust:Selective Color...) Is there a similar feature in Photoshop Elements?

Access to the earlier Curves dialog has been curtailed by Adobe programmatically. I haven't yet checked into inserting the new Curves diaolog into things as a replacement...but it seems that it wouldn't be friendly. My technique is to use Gradient Maps as curves instead. You will be able to save/store presets, have a full preview, make adjustable adjustment layers, and other useful things!
Barbara's "Missing CD" includes my Simple Channel Mixer, which is a layer-based solution. I have additional tools on the way.

  • How can I escape from crop? Gets stuck on crop.  Thus cannot do adjust color /remove color cast.   Photoshop Elements 10 on PC.

I try everything.  Shut down Photoshop Elements 10.  Shut down PC.  Re-boot PC.  Try a different jpg.  Open it with PSE 10.  It still is stuck on Crop tool, and won't allow me to Adjust color.
    Help !

    Hi,
Which operating system are you running on?
Have you tried resetting the tools?
Click on the small down triangle at the top left of the tools and select Reset all tools
Once you are in the crop tool, you are clicking on the accept tick or the cancel symbol aren't you?

  • [Consolidation Locked] Is Photoshop Elements 10 compatible with Windows 8?

I am currently running Photoshop elements 10 and Premiere elements 10 (64Bit) on a Windows 7 Home Premium machine. The Hardware specs are pretty good, with a I7 2.5 processor, 8GB RAM, 2GB dedicated video card etc.
I was planning to upgrade myself to Windows 8 Professional using the $14 offer... however, need to know for sure that these 2 software work with Windows 8 and there are no issues.
Is there anyone here, who has tried to run these 2 software on Windows 8, and if so, what has been your experience. Are there any issues, or any performance lags?
I am pretty sure I do not want to pay the additional dollars to upgrade to version 11, so all responses will be very helpful indeed.
    Thanks in advance.

I have tried v10 under Win8 and my findings were not that encouraging. I don't know if it's due to my Wacom driver or an inherent flaw in PSE10, but I get severe cursor lag. Not just with the brushes, but also with the regular cursor. I'll move the cursor only to have it halt for half a second and then continue. Stop. Go. Stop. Go. Stop. Go. It has made PSE10 totally unusable.
I haven't tried v11 under Win8. Even if it did work well, I still wouldn't use it.
Now, bear in mind, this is just my opinion. However, the new changes to the GUI have really turned me off. Previously, PSE looked and felt like a somewhat crippled version of the CSx Photoshop, which is a good thing. The GUI was polished, no nonsense, and well organized. The dark, neutral UI was perfect for editing various photos and textures. PSE10 was, imo, the best version yet.
PSE11 feels like a total step backwards. The core functionality is still there, but the GUI feels much more like a toy now. They even changed the icons. The design, to me, screams, "You're a helpless n00b. You probably won't understand Photoshop on your own so we'll hold your hand." No longer does it feel like CS-lite. It feels more like a community modded version, as if PSE and GIMP merged. It feels very weird and uncomfortable to use. By default, there is far too much clutter. As I said, all of the core functionality you loved is still there. It's just hidden beneath an ugly and very unprofessional looking UI.
Finances being what they are, I've gone back to Corel PSP, now in version X5. It's missing some of my favorite Adobe features, like the content aware healing brush, but it does the job and doesn't fight me. I wish that Adobe would realize that people just want to get the job done. The GUI should stay the heck out of the way. PSE11's design is not aimed at power users.

  • How do I make a custom brush image in a gradient color scheme in Photoshop Elements 12?

I want to make a custom brush image in a gradient color scheme.  I know how to change the hue jitter, but I want to "paint" the image with a gradient between two colors.  For example, I have an image of an octopus that I have used to create a custom brush.  I want the top of the octopus to be hot pink and gradually fade into a deep orange at the end of the tentacles.  Everything I've looked up just colors the background.  Thanks in advance!

    Try the following:
    Open the octopus image
Open a Gradient Map Adjustment layer above this. There are several preset gradients, but in my version of the program I don't see one with pink to orange.
When you double click on the gradient bar in the Adjustments palette, this will open up the Gradient Editor, where you can tailor the gradient to your specifications with color and opacity stops. (see below)
This will apply the gradient to the entire picture. However, the adjustment layer has a built-in mask (the white rectangle).
Left click on this and paint with a black brush to hide the gradient outside of the octopus. If you go too far, you can correct with a white brush.
Now, as to the Gradient map adjustment layer, here is how to configure it:

  • Printing with HP B9180 and Photoshop Elements 8 and Color Management

I've got a bit of confusion about certain settings in the printing process and I've posted a rather long discussion of my 'issues' and confusion.  I hope someone can give me some guidance here.  I've seen a lot of these issues addressed in many places but I can't seem to find an integrated response.  Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read and respond.
    Color Management Questions
My problems started when I was getting pictures that were too dark from my HP 9180 printer after having gotten very nice prints for a long time.  I had obviously started to do something differently inadvertently.  The only thing I think that is different is that I got a new 23 inch monitor, which does produce much brighter on-screen images.  So, I started to do some research and know just enough about color management to be slightly confused and have some questions that I hope someone can give me some help with.
    Equipment Background
I use both a Canon 20D and a Canon PowerShot SD600 camera. Both have the default color space as sRGB, although the 20D can be also set as RGB.
I also use Photoshop Elements 8, where there are a variety of settings possible for printing.
My monitor is an HP S2331, whose color space is sRGB and cannot be reset to RGB (I think) except for temperature; the default is 6500K.
My printer is an HP Photosmart Pro B9180 Printer, where there are also a variety of settings possible.
    I’m running XP-Pro.
    Here’s Where I Get Confused
Everything I have read about color management (various web sites, forums, books, etc) says to have the image, monitor, and printer all in the same color space.
Everything I read about PSE 8 (same sources) says to set PSE 8 to ‘Always Optimize for Printing’ under Edit>Color Settings in order to get the best prints.  This displays photos based on the Adobe RGB color space.
I am taking pictures in sRGB, and telling PSE 8 to process them in RGB by selecting ‘Always Optimize for Printing’.  Is this something I should be concerned about?  Should I reset my camera for RGB?
Further, by selecting ‘Always Optimize for Printing’, I am setting PSE 8 for RGB while my monitor displays sRGB.  Is this an important issue or is it also much ado about technicalities that an amateur should not worry about?  It does violate the ‘keep them in the same color space’ rule.
Next, when I go to File>Print and get the Print window and then do the Page Setup and Select Printer, I then go to More Options in the lower left of the window.  Under the More Options window, I select Color management and select Photoshop Elements Manages Colors.  Next, there is Image Space, which is fixed and not subject to selection from a drop down menu.
I understand that this is the image space of the image I took with my camera and that information is embedded in the image.  Correct?
Next, there is Printer Profile.  But, from what I have read, this is where the IEC profile of the paper being printed on is supposed to be selected, isn’t it?
Shouldn’t this more appropriately be called Paper Profile, or Printing Media Profile?  Further, this drop down menu appears to be somewhat erratic, sometimes showing all of the paper profiles I believe are loaded, sometimes not. It also shows listings such as Working RGB-Adobe RGB (1988), Adobe RGB 1988, Dot Gain 10%, 15%.... along with a lot of paper profiles.  Aren’t those profiles unnecessary here?
I’ve used both Relative Colorimetric and Perceptual Rendering and am happy with either one.
Next, when I go to Printer Preferences, in order to “…disable color management in the printer preferences dialog”, under the Color Tab, I select Application Managed Colors from the Color management drop down menu, and also have the option of selecting ColorSmart/sRGB and Adobe RGB (1988).
Is there any time when I should use either ColorSmart/sRGB or Adobe RGB  (1988)?  If I were staying with my camera’s sRGB setting, given the fact that the monitor is sRGB, would the appropriate selections be ‘Printer Manages Colors’ and ‘ColorSmart/sRGB’?
Finally, under the Features Tab, I go to look for the same paper I selected under Printer Profile (Question 4 above).  If it is one of the pre-loaded (by HP) profiles, it is there, but if it is a profile I downloaded, say for an Ilford paper, it isn’t listed, and I need to guess at an equivalent type of paper to select.
Is there any way to get that listing to appear under the Paper Type drop down menu?
I know that this is a long post, but it helped me to clarify my ‘issues’.  Thank you for any and all suggestions, answers, guidance and help.

    RIK,
Some printers have long names, esp. HP printers, and PSE gets ":confused." In control panel>devices and printers, right click on the default printer, go to printer properties, and rename the default printer to something short, e.g. "Our Printer." That may fix it..

  • Color space change when using photoshop elements plug in

When I select photo and edit with photoshop elements, Aperture makes a copy of the file as expected, but I can see the image color/hue etc. has changed, why?  Is there some setting I am missing?  The color of the image shouldn't change, should it? Just doesn't make sense!

Where do you see the color change of the copy?
In the thumbnail or preview before it is send to the external edtor?
When the image is opened in the external editor?
Or after it is send back from the editor?
I do not see any color changes when I use PS CS5; it may help to see a screenshot.

  • PhotoShop Elements 5.0 Cursor locks to Hand tool

I use Photoshop Elements 5.0, and sometimes, my cursor will lock to the hand tool and I can't use any other tools.  I will exit the program and open it back up, and it will still be locked on the hand tool, but later, it will randomly start working again and let me use the other tools.  How can I fix this?

I'd start by checking the space bar on the keyboard. It might be sticking. When (if) you get stuck in the hand tool, try tapping your space bar.
Reason: The space bar is the shortcut that calls up the  hand tool.

  • Photoshop Elements 6.0 locks up deleting pictures from my Canon Digital Rebel XSI

I'm a long time user of Photoshop Elements and have never had one issue with it.  I just got a Canon Rebel XSi and when I connect it to my PC, PE offers to download the pictures.  That works fine.  The pictures come into PE.  Then it offers to delete the pictures from the camera and this is where the trouble begins. I click "Okay" to begin deleting and then the little dialogue box never goes away and the program just stays hung up.
HELP!  What is wrong?  Why is this locking up?

It's really not a good idea to let elements delete the photos in any case. Your camera has its own directory structure that the computer doesn't fully understand. It's preferable to just reformat your card in the camera or delete the photos directly in the camera, rather than letting a computer do it for you.

This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this? It keeps telling me that there are missing files, too. You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.
